Adding To or Starting a Garden
AKA, the beginning of the Plants-Related section of this series.
This is my third post in a series I’ll be making on how to increase biodiversity on a budget! I’m not an expert--just an enthusiast--but I hope something you find here helps!
Got an area of lawn you’d like to convert to a wildlife haven? An area you can stick some hanging baskets in? Want to know how your garden of tomatoes and zucchinis is already putting in a lot of work? This is the section for you!
It would be dumb of me to not acknowledge that the act of gardening can come with a lot of costs. Buying seeds, buying plants, buying soil, raised bed materials, mulch, etc. … it can all get a bit daunting, let’s be honest! But there’s quite a few ways to get seeds and plants for free or extremely cheap, which I’ll be addressing in this section! The next section will be all about addressing the other Costs in gardening and how to mitigate or eliminate them entirely.
Also, do keep in mind; there’s no need to try and convert a whole area from lawn to garden or unused to garden at once. In fact, it could actually be extremely beneficial to do it a little at a time--maybe four or five square feet to start out.
Front Lawn (or Managing Principles)
Tumblr media
If you live in a place where you’re required to have a grass turf lawn (HOA’s come to mind…), try replacing it with native grasses instead! You could even possibly use a low-growing ground cover plant like clover to a similar effect! Reseeding/replacing an entire lawn can be a big upfront cost, but even just letting the lawn be a little messy and tall helps. If the lawn gets patchy, leave the bare spots for a little while and something different will likely pop up! Pioneer species will fill the gaps and provide benefits to other plants around them, support animals, and more! If you want to take the guesswork out of it, you could always research what the pioneer species are in your area and plant the ones you like most.
Obtaining Seeds for Cheap or Free
Tumblr media
The cheapest way to start a garden is by far via seeds. However, seeds can be a bit complicated to grow, and some sources make them… way overpriced. Fortunately there are ways to get seeds for little to no cost!
Some places sell seeds for as low as a dollar, 50 cents, or 25 cents! The packets may not have a lot of seeds, but it’s definitely a good start for a low budget! I’ve personally bought cheap seed packets at Walmart--the Ferry-Morse and Burpee brands are not what we’re looking for here. Typically the cheaper ones I’ve found are American Seed (which is owned by Green Garden Products, which also owns Ferry-Morse, Livingston Seed, McKenzie Seed, and Seeds of Change. Do with that information what you will), but they’re rarely stocked near the Ferry-Morse ones in the Formal Gardening Section. I’ve most often found them on end caps near the gardening section, so you may have to weave through a few aisles to find them, but once you do there’s an array of flower and vegetable seeds to select from! Alternatively, I’ve found seeds at Dollar Tree sold 2 or 4 for a dollar in Spring as part of their seasonal product; however, when they’re out of stock, they’re typically out of stock for the year. Try to check them out early in the year!
Tumblr media
Otherwise, other seed companies like Urban Farmer or Botanical Interests will often have semi-frequent sales in spring and fall, when people are stocking up on seeds--joining their email lists can help you be the first to know when a good sale is going on!
Some foods from grocery stores will provide seeds that you can use in the garden as well. I’ve had the most luck with store-bought bagged beans, peppers, and tomatoes. Some people have had luck with watermelons, apples, citrus, squash, and more. Do keep in mind that you likely won’t get the same variety of fruit/vegetable as the one you bought--the resulting plant may look different and taste different.
Tumblr media
Give it a shot! Pick some beans you like--if they don't grow well, at least you can eat the rest!
If you live in the US, food-producing live plants, bare roots, and seeds can often be purchased with SNAP benefits. But what does growing fruits, veggies, and herbs have to do with boosting biodiversity? While food crops aren’t typically native, they still provide valuable shelter for native insects. Some plants even have intricate relationships with native fauna--like the squash bee, a solitary bee which exclusively pollinates cucurbits like pumpkins, squash, and zucchini. And we get to benefit more directly as well! If you’re planting a diverse range of foods in your garden (as opposed to the swaths of single-plant farms that typically produce what’s sent to grocery stores), you’re supporting high levels of biodiversity by providing a variety of plants for creatures to live and hunt around.
Tumblr media
Most of the time, when we think of boosting biodiversity with a garden, we think of a colorful flower garden teeming with pollinator species. However, if we’re striving to use native species, it can be a bit difficult to find some species in stores. I can say from experience that trying to find any wildflower seeds other than butterfly weed, purple coneflowers, and black-eyed-susans is… challenging, if you limit yourself to stores like Walmart, Home Depot, and Lowe’s. You might occasionally get lucky with an ACE Hardware or a local nursery, but even then sometimes it can be hard to track down who in your area is selling what--let alone if you live in an area where no one really is selling native plants or their seeds. Not to mention, even once you find a local or online store selling the seeds you want, they can sometimes cost a pretty penny. So what do you do?
If you have the option to, consider gathering native seeds yourself! Get good at identifying the native flora and fauna--or at least, a few target plants and their lookalikes--and get ready to go! Learn where they tend to grow, when they’ll be seeding, etc. Try to identify the plant before it goes to seed (for most plants, it's easiest to identify when flowering), then check back regularly to gather seeds. Typically, if I want to learn how to collect seed from a specific plant, I just search it on Google or YouTube--oftentimes, I'm lead to the GrowItBuildIt Youtube page, so it may be a helpful resource for you as well! Of course, make sure to leave plenty of seed behind so the wild population can repopulate, and seed can feed other creatures in the area. A good rule of thumb is to take no more than 1/3rd of what's available.
Tumblr media
Buying seed in bulk is an option if you can afford the upfront cost. Try teaming up with a few friends to buy some bulk seeds and split them amongst yourselves--you’ll get tons of seed! Prairie Moon is a popular site that'll sell seeds by the pound if you can afford the price--though they're in the US, and I believe they focus on Midwest and East Coast natives.
If you want to cheat the system, don’t buy bulk sunflower seeds--buy bags of sunflower seeds being sold as birdseed. They’re typically all black oil sunflower seeds, but they’ll sprout, and they’re fairly cheap for the amount you get!
Tumblr media
However, beware generic wildflower seed mixes! Many brands like to sell wildflower seed mixes in big box stores like Home Depot, Target, or even Dollar Tree, but they’ll often include flowers that aren’t native or possibly even invasive in your region! Before you make any purchases, double check to make sure the contained seeds won’t do more harm than good! A quality source of native seeds will provide English and Latin names for all seeds included, and will be native to the region or at least non-invasive.
Tumblr media
See this? I don't trust this.
There’s a good handful of programs online that’ll send you free seeds if you’re planning to start a native habitat project! Poke around online and see what you can find; you might get lucky! The best time to start looking for these is fall and winter, I find--by early spring, many of them are either done or beginning to wind down... though some also start up in spring. Ultimately--just check regularly! You never know what you can find!
Other Ways to Get Plants
Don’t want to start from seed? That’s fair! You can try cuttings! Just be sure not to take too much of the plant while you do so. Make sure you’ve gotten a few leaf nodes on your cutting, and cut any flowers you may have gotten. Make sure to leave some blooms and foliage on the original plant for the creatures in the current habitat--you don’t want to destroy one habitat to make another in your garden. There’s tons of methods of rooting cuttings, many of which have different efficacy rates for different plants, but that’s a topic for another post.
If you find seedlings growing in a place where they won’t be able to sustain themselves long-term, or are in danger of being destroyed, consider relocating them! You may be able to gently dig up and transplant the seedling to your garden. Don’t do this if they’re in a place where they can easily survive--ideally, you’ll be taking plants from sidewalk cracks, heavily maintained public gardens, roadsides, etc. Do be careful while doing this--ensure your safety first!
Tumblr media
You’re totally allowed to join gardening communities like clubs, facebook groups, and more before you’ve even put a trowel to the dirt. These are great places to learn information and advice! Many gardeners are more than happy to help out a new gardener, and will eagerly provide seeds, cuttings, or even baby plants! Talk to some people about your gardening journey and what you’re hoping to do, and you just might find some kindred spirits--or at least get more people interested in the topic!
Seed and plant giveaways and trades happen all the time in gardening clubs, as well as online! Just poke around and see what you can find! Some are explicitly trades, meaning you’re expected to send something in return, but once you get your feet on the ground with some plant knowledge you’ll be stellar! You may be able to explain you’re just starting out, and someone may send you seeds without expecting a trade, but I’d suggest trying giveaways first.
Tumblr media
Poke around online and see if there’s a local chapter of your state’s native plant society. From there, you’ll likely be able to find a calendar of events--many of them will host plant sales in the spring, with a bunch of native plant seedlings ripe for the pickings if you can make it out and have some money to spare! Fair warning, though, you’ll want to get there early if you can. If they say they’re starting at 10, try to get there by 9:45. Year after year, there’s always record turnout, and they sell out of plants faster than ever. Just trust me on this. I’ve been let down; hopefully you won’t have to be.
Some libraries are beginning to host seed libraries! Check around and see if your library has one! Ideally, the system works best if you also have seeds to contribute in return, but if you’re just starting out I’m sure they won’t mind you taking some seeds! Just consider saving some seeds to contribute in the future and pay it forward. If your library doesn’t have a seed library? Consider asking if they’d be willing to start one! Community interest is a great way to get the ball rolling on projects like these, but they’ll only know the community is interested if the community tells them they’re interested!
Tumblr media
Volunteer to Garden for/with Someone Else
Maybe someone in your area wants to garden, but is struggling to find the time/energy. Many elderly people who used to garden simply can’t anymore but still would like a garden. Other people may love to have a helping hand in their garden. You might even find a few people in your area interested in renting and sharing a community garden plot with others, so they don't have to handle it all on their own! They may be interested in increasing biodiversity right now, or may be willing to if it’s brought up to them. You might be just the kind of person someone needs! Since it won't be your garden, you’ll likely need a bit of permission and collaboration to get anything in particular going, but it’s worth a shot and a way to maybe even make friends!
Again, your mileage may vary with some of these. You may not know where there's a bunch of wildflowers growing in your area, or maybe your local library doesn't have a free seed library. That's okay! Do what you're able to, find what you can find, get what you can get! And there's never any shame with starting small--in fact, starting small can make the project easier to manage and expand when you're able!
That's the end of this post! My next post is gonna be about ways to start growing plants cheaply--low cost seed starting set ups, essentially. There's a lot of good options, many of which I've used myself even! Until then, I hope this advice is helpful! Feel free to reply with any questions, success stories, or anything you think I may have forgotten to add in!

#greenlightvolume10 but seriously how!? Its RTX and it was not greenlit.
No idea, anon. Like legitimately, I don't know nearly enough about this business to say if general support would make a difference at this point, or if Eddie is calling for something else, or... what.
Honestly though, Vol. 10 still not being greenlit is currently overshadowed by the everything of that epilogue. I am immensely grateful that it wasn't a formal part of the Volume (even though releasing it now raises it to the status of canon in many fans' eyes and its mere existence implies that, if we do get Volume 10, the information in that clip will greatly inform what comes next) because boy oh boy, did I dislike it. That right there is six condensed minutes of RWBY's tendency to rewrite important plot-points and characterization on the fly. Why is Winter guiltily claiming she stayed by Ironwood's side too long when the entire point of Volume 7 was that they all agreed with him, at least when it came to long-term goals? Why has the story forgotten the crucial World Building detail that one of the things everyone agreed on was that telling Remnant about Salem would lead to mass-scale grimm attacks? Now, as we already guessed due to the implications of Volume 9's final image, Ruby's message has only brought super convenient cooperation—to the point of her getting impromptu memorials. Hell, even Raven, the one character defined by her cowardly neutrality, appears to ferry the girls into the city without any arc to explain her presence except, apparently, "The teenager telling me things I already knew but being ~hopeful~ about it has totally changed my tune, to the point of being OOC." Why does Winter get the long-winded speech expressing her sorrow when Qrow, someone who just lost two girls akin to his daughters, walks around laughing and feeling "optimistic"? I get that obviously the clip is very unfinished, but why does Nora have a waaaaay stronger reaction to Team RWBY's return than he does? Why is he thumbing Clover's badge in gratitude when Volume 8 worked so hard to paint him as the villain who (agree to disagree) got himself killed? Meanwhile, I can't say I'm surprised that his depression, rather than getting worse after such a monumental tragedy, has apparently disappeared just like his alcoholism.
Even Vacuo feels like a mess. We left the citizens stranded in the desert getting picked off by grimm, their only potential salvation a city that despises them, specifically, and prizes itself on the kind of survival mentality the Atlas elite are not in a position to emulate (huntsmen aside). We then return to suddenly find new happiness blooming, the Schnees doling out bread with only the occasional snarky remark to contend with. This is partly why I really didn't want that time skip. It's far too easily—as RWBY has done in this clip—to skate over all the conflict it introduced with a, "They got out of that mess somehow" implication.
Also, question: were Maria and Pietro there? I don't recall seeing them, but I've only watched it once. If you're going to produce a things-are-bad-but-not-actually-compared-to-what-the-story-set-up ending that includes character appearances all the way down to the largely inconsequential butler... at least tell us if those two are actually dead or not?

Thess vs Firegleam
So I spent awhile backtracking just for kicks. Some of it was worth it. Some of it ... not so much.
There is supposed to be a big chunk of green shiny out by Sylens' lab but I cannot get up there to find out. I will look later when I don't have so much firegleam to ignite. But lemme see what's over actually behind that firegleam deposit in Sylens' 'lab space', for lack of a better word.
Well, mildly underwhelming, but hey. Lemme just grab a campfire in the area and...
Oh. That's a noise. Talanah! And Longlegs! Friend and needed parts! Okay, the firegleam can wait!
Ah. Another Carja trying to find friends, family, or Other Important Person in the West. Cool, we can deal with that. A little bit out of my way, but what're friends for?
...I am missing out on so much hunting, Talanah...
A ... Shellsnapper. That's new. Okay, you brought me Longlegs and a whole new unfeasibly big thing to kill. All is forgiven. Now, lemme see ... scanned, logged, and that's a vulnerable bit but lemme hunker because that thing can probably take a huge amount of--
.........Did ... did I just one-shot Robo-Atuin?
Apparently, yes I did. I guess I worried for nothing.
Ah. Now there is a mountain in the way and not even I can feasibly climb it. I guess we find a way around or through. Yeah, yeah, we'll probably meet again when circumstances demand. For now, though ... I should be saving the world but apparently that will wait for me to ignite a lot of firegleam.
Right. Start from the Daunt, work my way down. This one at this old dig site might be worth looking at.
...Vendor trash. Okay. Fine. Next!
Huh. This lets me into that tower I couldn't get into. Now, what wonders will we find within?
...A ... codex entry and more vendor trash. Okay. Fine. Next!
............Dude, HOW ARE YOU STILL PULLING ON THAT POOR DEAD OSERAM?!? There really should be a function whereby, if you complete a quest, the quest giver can ... like, go away, do something else? Something other than pulling on the ankle on the same Oseram corpse for, like, three in-game days?
Please let this climb and ridiculousness be worth it...
Moooooooore vendor trash. Okay. Fine. Someone's going to love me when I finally get back to Plainsong for the main quest because I'm going to have so much vendor trash...
(Wow. Really glad I'm not playing BG3 like this. Imagine encumberance rules in this game...)
Right. Okay. How about this one just by Barren Light, at the edge of No Man's Land. That's got to have something worthwhile ... right?
GREEN SHINY! ...And nothing to spend it on so far. Ah well.
Okay. This is in an Old World ruin. This has to be something worthwhile.
This ... is a lateral thinking jumping puzzle. Right. Okay. Hoboy.
So ... I have a battery I can't jump with, a body of water I can't cross, and over there, a crate. Hrm.
So the only way over there is gliding. I think I see why they mapped everything to space bar, now. Guess I'm going to have to rebind some keys here or I won't time it right.
Okay, so ... can't jump on the crate while holding battery. So how... Wait. Can we use the pullcaster on this thing?
.........Oh. Ooooooooh. You sneaky bastards.
No, the ramps won't do it because it'll just slide off when the crate's at an angle. And that's where the nearly perfect dock comes in.
BATTERY FERRIED. Now, up. More crate-dragging. Wheee!
So ... that's another toucan ball. And this one's ... oh, those weren't clovers on the first ones - they were clubs, like the card suit. Because this one's giving off spades. Huh. The Old World was weird.
On that note, I should probably consider something that resembles food. Today's probably going to be a bit of a Forbidden West binge. The Saturday Shenanigans group is on a two-week hiatus between mini-campaigns - this week because I wanted a break, next week because @hyperewok1 is away and we don't have enough players on a Saturday to play when we're a person short. Plus, I really could use a little bit more of a break too. I mean, that'll mean that I have a whole weekend next weekend, just for me! (Not that I don't love my every-other-Sunday D&D group - I really seriously do. Just a whole weekend with nothing to plan for or set up for people feels ... decadent and lovely, somehow.)
Anyway, then I have to decide between going for that drone near Plainsong (which means dealing with Blight, yay), or dealing with the Rebel outposting also near Plainsong. Either way, going to stick around Plainsong at least a bit. But all of that will be easier on a full stomach. So ... food.

🦇 Clover Hendry's Day Off Book Review
❓ #QOTD When was the last time you said no OR what are your self-care rituals? ❓
[ Find my review below or on Goodreads | Storygraph | Literal ]
🦇 What if you said, "F--- it all," and spent the entire day YOUR way? Clover Hendry no longer has to wonder. In this perimenopausal Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Clover prioritizes saying "no" over pleasing everyone around her. Unfortunately, taking a day off to do and say the first thing that comes to mind can create a mess later.
💜 Clover Hendry's Day Off is a reminder that you can't live for yourself without prioritizing yourself. Clover is messy but relatable, realistically human and fallible but also a character you'll cheer for. Her narration is frantic, a million thoughts running through her mind at a minute, but that's realistic of a working mom trying to carry the weight of the world on her shoulders, too. In time, she learns to empower herself, which is inspiring.
🦇 While I understand the reason behind the writing style, the lengthy paragraphs and thought spirals weren't for me. I read to escape my own messy mind, so entering someone else's isn't an escape so much as an amplification of my own messes. I did expect some magic realism to the story, though; instead, Clover is injured, takes a painkiller, and has a sudden change of mind about her life. The eureka moment felt anti-climatic, given the rushed and frantic narration. Some scenes or thoughts are scattered and abrupt as well, making the story a bit long-winded and lacking focus.
🦇 Recommended for anyone who wants to make a change in their life or struggles to press pause and live in the moment. Ideal for fans of Sophie Kinsella.
✨ The Vibes ✨ 🐇 Ferris Bueller Vibes 🐇 Humorous 🐇 Working Mom MC 🐇 Relatable 🐇 First Person POV
🦇 Major thanks to the author and publisher for providing an ARC of this book via Netgalley. 🥰 This does not affect my opinion regarding the book.

Assorted f/o questions asked by @honeyed-angel-wings
For Bond: what’s your favorite way to unwind from the hustle and bustle of life with Tex? 🥺
Since retiring, I've found that the best way to unwind is with a good glass of scotch, a plush blanket, and a book- preferably with Sunny reading said book and sharing said blanket. Having said that, thank you- may you rest well during your downtime.
For Mr. Pennyworth: Do you know how to ballroom dance? Have you ever taught Skipper how? :0c
Indeed I do; any butler worth his salt should know how to ballroom dance, if you ask me. I've taught Texie how since our time together and now and then, xe'll indulge me in an impromptu dance while we wait for whatever is in the oven to finish baking. Thank you very much for the question and remember to eat something at least once when you've read this! -A.P
For Ferris: Could you please describe your relationship with Moxie as if it were a painting? You can interpret that however you’d like!
Ach, well. That's a question. Hmm... I'd say... and I know Moxie wouldn't like me saying it, but our relationship reminds me of solid, strong lines- geometric shapes; I say this because we fit together quite well. The colors are rich and jewel toned, the paint layered thickly like you would find in a Van Gogh piece- layers of trust and mutual knowledge earned over time. Thank you, it was a very intriguing and inspiring question!
For Stark: On long nights, what are your favorite ways to make Sunny feel safe and cherished? 🥺
Two words: movie night. Love sitting down with shortstack with bowls of popcorn and snacks, love picking out a franchise to try and marathon together while we pick it apart, make fun of it, take it seriously- it's just great to have them cuddled next to me while we watch and I know in those moments they know I love them. Thanks for the question!
For Newt: Um!! Hi!!! I’ve highkey always wanted to meet you. Lowkey geeking out, sorry, sorry. You’re really sweet and I’m very inspired by your patience and kindness and giant heart >//< 👋👋 anyway question!! Which of your beast friends would you say Clover is most closely bonded with? Do you have any stories as to how they got that close? 🥹
Hello! I'm touched to be a role model! Don't forget to embrace your own innate good qualities and look up to yourself too! Erm let's see... I'd say Stellaria is most closely bonded with that pesky niffler of mine which is fine by me since I often don't have the time (or admittedly, the patience) to deal with the cheeky blighter. I like to tease Stellaria that she's only close to the niffler because they're both impishly small and attracted to shiny things so they of course have a sense of camaraderie haha. Really, I couldn't tell you any stories on how; it seems that they sort of just... bonded when my back was turned. Thank you for the question!

Hi guys I’m back! I spent all night traveling to Nimbasa City. Well, I set up camp in Route 5 last night. It was nice just star-gazing, listening to nature around you... I can’t understand how some people like that sometimes! Well, anyways, now that I’m in Nimbasa proper, I got service back! Woo, what should I do first?
I could ride the roller coaster or the ferris wheel, or I could check out some of the restaurants! I heard they’re pretty expensive, but I bet it’s worth it! Oh, or maybe I could watch one of the musicals!
There’s a lot of people looking at Clover right now. Her Summer leaves are growing in, and if you don’t own a Sawsbuck, it’s not something you see very often! But sometimes I wish these people would go away. It’s more quiet where I’m from, and I like the peace and quiet sometimes. Places like Nimbasa can just be overwhelming.

drooling over steve harrington, writing steddie fics and my own poetry, reading the queerest literature on the market, yearning for irl requited love, contemplating my career choices, selling vintage clothing, crying to the tune of other peoples steddie fics, thrifting, cooking with an excessive amount of hot chili oil, wandering around trader joe’s, yoga, and hiking :)
