A list of my creative activity and all the media I have experienced throughout the year. I did a version of this eight months ago, but I wasn’t entirely satisfied with it. So I tooled about a little; and in the meantime, the activity has remained as inconsistent as my energy levels, but eventful, nonetheless. Here’s a more thorough list drawn up at the end of the year - after all, the end of 2019 is also the end of the 2010s.

The list has become rather long, so I’ve excluded online essays, stories, fanfiction, or poems that I’ve read this year. I ended up resorting to the usual 5-star rating system; because if I had to add a footnote explaining my personal 7-star rating system, the list would’ve been even longer and weirder!

I’m not that familiar with Homestuck, definitely not enough to do an AU.  I read the novelizations of the Pokemon show as a kid but never saw the show or played any of the video games.  I did play the super-obscure Pokemon board game, but most of my trading cards were printed in Japanese (I had a strange childhood), so my experience there is, uh, probably not quite overlapping with everyone else’s.

Disclaimer 1: Like a lot of people who went to high school in the American South, my education in literature is pretty shamefully lacking in a lot of areas.  (As in, during our African American History unit in ninth grade we read To Kill a Mockingbird, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn… and that was it.  As in, our twelfth-grade US History class, I shit you not, covered Gone With the Wind.)  There were a lot of good teachers in with the *ahem* Less Woke ones (how I read Their Eyes Were Watching God and The Bluest Eye) and college definitely set me on the path to trying to find books written/published outside the WASP-ier parts of the U.S., but the overall list is still embarrassingly hegemonic.

Disclaimer 2: There are a crapton of errors — typos, misspelled names, misattributions, questionable genre classifications, etc. — in here.  If you genuinely have no idea what a title is supposed to be, ask me.  Otherwise, please don’t bother letting me know about my mistakes.

Disclaimer 3: I am not looking for recommendations.  My Goodreads “To Read” list is already a good 700 items long, and people telling me “if you like X, then you’ll love Y!” genuinely stresses me the fuck out.

Disclaimer 4: There are no unproblematic faves on this list.  I love Supernatural, and I know that Supernatural is hella misogynistic.  On the flip side: I don’t love The Lord of the Rings at all, partially because LOTR is hella misogynistic, but I also don’t think that should stop anyone else from loving LOTR if they’re willing to love it and also acknowledge its flaws.

By the way (same anon as before, the one about the dream) how is your horror movie watching going? Any new favorites? I agree Hereditary was wild. I enjoyed it mostly, but I’m still SO bored of cults in movies.. I just miss the fun ugly monsters of the 80s. @hollywood pls.. bring them back

but horror movies! omg i could talk your ear off about them.

i actually really enjoy a Good cult movie, but the problem is that there are like maybe 2. like the original wicker man is one of my favourite movies, and i really enjoyed the ritual. hereditary, while off the fucking chain at the end there, the cult shit was. not great. i mean it was cleverer than most cult stories but a bit heavy handed and dramatic. there’s always this air of “pagan religions are all cults and evil and nothing good comes out of them”. so like the cult in the ritual are held hostage by their god, and the people in wicker man are happy and peaceful rather than ultra-violent, angry and repressed (looking at you “spiritual sequel to wicker man” apostle). there’s a finnish movie i’m planning to watch called Sauna and it’s super promising because it’s vague as to whether the evil is christian or pagan and that is 👌🏻 for me

cause i really enjoy religious horror around christianity (probably cause of my history with christianity and christians lol) so like the omen, possession, prince of darkness, and (my all time favourite horror movie) jacobs ladder. it’s generally always catholicism tho and some movies (like the nun) just rely on the creep factor of the various aesthetic trimmings of catholicism. but movies using generic Demon shit and calling in a catholic priest to deal with it are generally. bad. wish people would stop trying to one-up the exorcist. that movie is fantastic but all the copy cats that followed have been detrimental to the quality of the story.

i also love cosmic horror like. a lot. like omg event horizon! in the mouth of madness! there isn’t enough of it. i need some existentialism in my horror!! i need the void! like one of my favourite things in cosmic horror is when it’s the place itself that’s attacking or haunting them. like i’m going to watch cloverfield paradox and i wasn’t too enthused until i found out the fucking space station itself starts fucking them up!!! eldritch locations are just omg. not haunted houses, cause it’s just a ghost fucking shit up then, but when it’s the actual location! the Energy of the place itself!! urgh i love it.

i watched hellraiser last night though and it was pretty fun! and it brings me to another point: practice effects!!!

like yes!! older monster movies had baller practice effects (the thing, alien, dawn of the dead, and almost every other movie i’ve mentioned here) like in modern horror they even use cgi blood!! which looks like shit! the example i always go to for amazing practical effects is the scene in the thing when norris is being defibbed. even in that there’s the tiniest bit of really shitty cgi, which is so detrimental to an amazing scene. but god i love prac effects so much. like in hellraiser when Dad Character is bleeding all over the floor and frank starts absorbing it though the floor boards. a modern horror movie would have used cgi, but instead they gently pumped fake blood up through the floorboards and then reversed the footage!! so fucking simple and effective.

but yes sorry i’m writing you and essay here huh? wkfjtjakdl i haven’t found a new favourite yet, jacobs ladder is pretty hard to beat tbh. although i’ll be seeing Us when it comes out here next week, so who knows. jordan peele is the best modern horror director tbh and i trust him to deliver 🙏🏻💕
