The Spreadsheet Digest - Vol 27
Howdy folks!
It's so lovely to be back to reading fic again AHHHH!! I'm still taking it easy and not putting too much pressure on myself. I'm also switching to not reading a series until it's finished and not recommending a series until I've finished it, which is a good motivation for... ya know... finishing it. I have a brand new TBR system on Notion that's working out super well for me and making it easier than ever to keep up with the spreadsheet and what I want to read.
Anywho, I've got 15 fics for you this week. If you wanna peruse my other fic recs click here. If you wanna read my fics, click here.

18 NEW PLAYLISTS
I’ve been building more playlists for my iTunes file so that I can get more use out of my collection. It enables me to listen on the computer when I’m working, or at the exercise room when I’m working out. And it’s a great opportunity to mix and match artists, albums or styles so that all the music sounds fresh, and new. Context matters. And most music fits together far better than any radio programmer or Spotify algorithm would lead you to believe.
Here’s the latest. The number of tracks is in parentheses.
1971 (283) 1972 (317) 1973 (377) An overview of each entire year in popular music. Most of it is Rock, Pop, and Soul but there's a sprinkling of Jazz, and Country as well.
Beg, Scream & Shout (144) The complete box set of the same name – a Rhino set of 144 great Soul singles of the 1960s.
Bill Evans (31) Sourced from The Complete Riverside Recordings box set, and The Best of Bill Evans on Verve. Three of Evans’ classic albums for Riverside along with an overview of his recordings for Verve.
Dexter Gordon (27) A collection of 70s recordings sourced from The Complete Prestige Recordings box (four of his best albums on the label), and closes with his Manhattan Symphonie album for Columbia.
James “Blood” Ulmer (50) A mix of 40 years of his recordings as a solo artist, and including the Music Revelation Ensemble, The Odyssey Band, and The Thing band recordings. His first album, Revealing, from 1977 kicks it off.
Jefferson Airplane (79) The first five albums complete, a selection of tracks from Bark, Early Flight, and the live Thirty Seconds Over Winterland, too. It closes with the 1989 self-titled reunion album.
John Wetton (80) Sourced from the excellent The Studio Recordings Anthology Vol. 1, along with his work with King Crimson, Uriah Heep, U.K., Asia, and the Steve Hackett Genesis Revisited project.
Laswell Mixes (18) Collects all three Bill Laswell remix albums of the works of Miles Davis, Panthalassa, and Panthalassa: The Remixes, and Carlos Santana, Divine Light - Reconstruction & Mix Translation.
Miles (Circle in The Round) (10) Straight recreation of the Miles Davis anthology Circle in The Round – a brilliant overview of Miles’ career with Columbia from 1955-1975.
Miles (Directions) (12) Another recreation of another Miles anthology from Columbia spanning his first 20 years with the label. This is not available on CD, nor is it available to stream, but all the tracks have been issued elsewhere since its 1981 release. I just brought them all together to recreate the album.
Miles Live (41) One of my better ideas, I think. This collects five editions of live recordings from The Miles Davis Quintet spanning the years 1960-1965. What makes it unique is that each of the quintets features a different saxophonist – none of whom is John Coltrane. Stockholm 1960 features Sonny Stitt, In Person Friday Night at The Blackhawk (1961) features Hank Mobley, Live at the 1963 Monterey Jazz Festival has George Coleman, Miles in Tokyo (1964) showcases Sam Rivers, and Highlights from The Plugged Nickel (1965) is with Wayne Shorter. Great opportunity to hear how the quintet evolved through the years, and how each of the saxophonists changed Miles’ sound.
Monk on Riverside (75) 12 Monk studio and live classic albums sourced from the massive 15 CD The Complete Riverside Recordings Box.
Northern Soul (124) Sourced from the Northern Soul box set, and The Decca Scene: Northern Soul CD. The best music from that uniquely British club scene.
Sonny Rollins (14) A trio of Rollins albums beginning with The Freedom Suite from 1958, The Bridge from 1962, and the Live in Graz, Austria November 12, 1966 trio set. Rollins in three different settings playing at his best.
Tacocat (25) Until a couple of weeks ago, I’d never heard this band. I picked up their first two CDs after hearing about them on a music podcast. Three girls and a guy with a girl group/pop/punk/alternative bent. Lots of hooks, and lots of fun. Reminded me of the 1980s indie scene before everything turned serious, and dark. NVM, and Lost Time are available direct from Sub Pop at very reasonable prices.
Virtuosos (132) Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Vangelis, John Paul Jones, Brand X, Steve Howe, Phil Manzanera, and Anthony Phillips – all great players collected in one place in a music clinic free for all. I wanted something different, so I brought great players together who really didn’t fit elsewhere.
I also split The Bangles playlist into a group list (89), and a side projects list (137). My two PJ Harvey lists are now three – the original albums (86), the demo albums (68), and a live only playlist (55). The 1969 (300) and 1970 (370) playlists were expanded by nearly double. The 1969-1973 playlists now total more than 1600 songs. Large playlists are best for genres, or year in music lists, and best heard on shuffle. Shorter playlists work better for artists, I find. The larger lists are films, the shorter ones work as snapshots.

Billboard USA Exclusion Zone Episode 23 (01/27/2024)
Tumblr media
I have like four things I want to say about the chart at the moment
Seems like this year will a test for the established artists from the 2010s as to how they'll adapt to 2020s especially with the TikTok generation
Speaking of TikTok, it's no secret that the app basically dictate what becomes a hit or not. But looking at the chart as a whole and I couldn't helped myself and think that these songs wouldn't be as high as it is if there's no TikTok
21 Savage seemingly has reached the stardom that big rappers before him that he even worked with in the 2020s. With this week we have 21 Savage album bomb and I will talked about the three highest charting songs from the album
The fact that I already got 2 songs that would probably appeared on my best list that debuted this week.
Something to think about really. Anyways debut time!
---------------------------------------------------
1. "Yes, And?" by Ariana Grande
See this is why I said that established artists will have to adapt to the 2020s sensibility and only get some immediate effect and nothing else. I do like the song and I'd say this is her best lead singles since No Tears Left To Cry with the late 80s house and the Vogue by Madonna samples. But I don't see a lot of hype from this at least on normie circle. So yeah the song is good but I'm worried about her next album
5. "Bizarrap Music Session, Vol 58" by Bizarrap & Young Miko
Even though I don't speak Spanish, I can sense that this song is aspiritional and celebrating the success by the production alone. The piano, the 2010s style percussion, and how tasteful it felt especially coming from Bizarrap. This is actually sounds like what Official HIGE DANdism would've made to be honest. Another great offering from Biza
16. "Redrum" by 21 Savage
Seems like 21 listened to MONACO by Bad Bunny and be like "yeah sure I have better samples here lmao" and that's how this song was made. All jokes aside yeah I can say this is perfect lead off singles. It sets the tone for the album and I love that samples.
17. "Igual Que Un Angel" by Kali Uchis ft. Peso Pluma
You know, I've always reserved with whenever Kali Uchis released at first because her brand of loose rnb music can be intimidating sometimes. But with this and the rest of the album, the feeling I got is just warm welcome. This song is excellent and the fact that this song made Peso Pluma sounds great not just good. Yeah this is best list material.
37. "nee-nah" by 21 Savage ft. Travis Scott & Metro Boomin
You can't do no wrong with 21 Savage and Metro Boomin but I'm surprised with Travis Scott here. He sounds more focused and better than his performance on Utopia. The song also just sounds great in general. Seems like his work on Spidervese soundtrack has done something with Metro because wow this sound so full and lush. The samples at the start with that trap percussion and of course the Nina Simone samples. It's a vibe and a half.
48. "Bling-Bang-Bang-Born" by Creepy Nuts
It's not even the end of January and we already have the best anime opening contender. Now with this one, opening for season 2 of Mashle, it has an uphill battle for it to be like best of the season so far. But somehow this song is unique even for anime opening standard, because this is straight up jersey club song even right down to the Trillville bed squeek. And the MC here R-Shitei just rap his ass off here. My god I am flabbergasted that this song exist at all.
53. "n.h.i.e" by 21 Savage ft. Doja Cat
So apparently this one is for Scarlet and yet it was given for 21 Savage. And yup this is definitely a Scarlet cut right down to the swapping bass and Doja Cat doing her Doja Cat shit. This would be like high tier Scarlet song but definitely middle tier American Dream song.
138. "J CHRIST" by Lil Nas X
Okay I think we need to talk about how we are assessing Lil Nas X as a phenomenom or as an artist. Because while this song is good, the way that people just don't care about this at all is telling especially when you remembered his last hit is a theme song for a League of Legends tournament. If I were you Lil Nas I would just released the Kesha cut as the second singles.
140. "First Love" by Oscar Ortiz X Edgardo Nunez
I usually like a lot of cumbia songs in general but I feel like something missing here. Maybe the percussion isn't defined or the performance from both artists are half assed. Feels like I should like this more than I do.
143. "Hola Perdida" by Luck Ra X KHEA
Well then this is the first merengue song since that mishapen collab between Manuel Turizo and Marshmello. I will say that I hope that we get more songs like this to spice up the latin pop scenes
146. "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield
This is actually my gf's favorite song did you know that? Also with this and Murder On The Dancefloor both becoming viral hits because it appeared on movies, we can safely say that the influence of New Radicals are still alive even in 2020s.
168. "Never Lose Me" by Flo Milli
You know I would congratulate Flo Milli for appearing on this chart because these type of songs aren't usually crossed over outside the US. I would say more but this is definitely one of the trap-n-B song of all time.
176. "Apocalypse" by Cigarettes After Sex
You know Cigarettes After Sex is an apt name for this band because this is probably the most empty, disposible, and forgettable indie rock song I've heard. The lyrics also so melodramatic to the point of agonizing. Hard pass.
181. "O Me Voy O Te Vas" by Natanael Cano
I wasn't sure how Natanael Cano could be the father for corridos tumbados until I listened to this song. Like Todd always said that this song sounds like it has existed since the beginning of time and that's the appeal of it really.
191. "King Shit" by Shubh
I should've corrected myself that there's also a rise in rap songs made by the Punjabi community in Canada and things can get really messy there. They usually bring the sound that usually appeared on Punjabi or general Indian sound and make a rap song out of it. Honestly I should learn more about this because this genre could be big one day.
197. "When We Were Young (The Logical Song)" by David Guetta ft. Kim Petras
Meanwhile this song is not that and it's basically just David Guetta playing catchup on the rising trance comeback and it's just as empty as you expected.
I highly recommend everyone to listen to these songs.

KOKIA in flashback - 2010
KOKIA has caught the travelling bug ahead of 2010, which is the year her album REAL WORLD comes out. For the concept of this album, she travels to the Sahara, Tunisia in November 2009, getting inspired by the sceneries she comes across. The promotional video for her song The woman is recorded in the desert, and her journey also results in a photobook and photo exhibition later that year.
It inspires her Japan concert tour oto no tabibito ('sound traveler') in April, selling out the Tokyo Bunkamura Orchard Hall on the final day of that tour. She uses lights and sounds more whimsically than before, taking her audience on a journey through the heart. As a fun tidbit, one of the dresses she wears in this concert is dyed with curry!
However, her 2010 travel doesn't end there; for the fifth year in a row, KOKIA returns to Europe, spreading her wings even further than before. Her REAL WORLD tour in October takes her through 8 different countries for 12 performances: Hungary, Russia, Poland, Austria, Germany, Spain, England and France.
In between it all, KOKIA still manages to release the final chapter of her Life trilogy (with the title tracks of all 3 singles ending up on the REAL WORLD album) and her first ever cover album, Musique a la Carte. This is also the year when For little tail, her song that preceded her actual debut, gets an official release with the digital single Road to Glory ~long journey~.

Episode one hundred and thirteen of De Algemene Verwarring was broadcast on Monday, May 27, 2024, and you can listen to it by clicking on the link below that will take you directly to the Mixcloud page:
Pictured below are Crystal Stilts, band from Brooklyn, New York, who released three albums between 2008 and 2013, two on Slumberland Records and the last one on Sacred Bones Records, and then they disappeared. I saw them live just once in Ghent, in a club where a band like Crystal Stilts doesn't fit but still it was a magnificent gig. They played some kind of dark power garage pop, with edgy Velvet Underground guitars and a singer who sounded like a miserable Jim Reid. In those days. there were a lot of that kind of lo-fi fuzzpop bands such as Blank Dogs, Intelligence, Vivian Girls, The Pink Noise, and so on, but somehow I keep coming back to Crystal Stilts because they sound a lot more timeless than their contemporaries. Three much loved records at De Algemene Verwarring headquarters, and let's not forget the Love Is A Wave and Shake The Shackles singles.
Apologies again for the late update, by the way. I don't seem to get into my normale scheme anymore. Anyway there's also some new music in this episode from Exek, 番長 Taste, Sewer Election, Demeters Döttrar and Lise Barkas/Lisa Kaüffert, and old rockers from The Cramps, Les Olivensteins, Chrys Alice, Siouxsie & The Banshees, Siglo XX, Litovsk, Lizzy Mercier Descloux, and more. And beneath the photo you can find the playlist for this show.

Jordana LeSesne, formerly known as 1.8.7, is an American musician and producer from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.[1] She now produces and performs as Jordana. She became known in the mid-1990s as a drum and bass producer.[2] Vibe magazine called her "one of the most respected Drum ‘n' Bass producers in the US."[3] In 2015, she was named as one of "20 women who shaped the history of dance music" by Mixmag.[4] She is transgender and came out in 1998.[5][2]
She has released over 50 tracks, including four albums, several EPs, and remixes under the alias 1.8.7. The 1997 album When Worlds Collide became known for its "dark pummeling assaults". She has licensed tracks for compilations as well as the Sci Fi Channel. Three of her albums charted in the Top 25 of both the CMJ (College Music Journal) and Mixmag U.S. (later Mixer Magazine, now defunct) for 1997 as well as 1998[6] and 1999. Her third album "The Cities Collection" debuted in the CMJ Top 5 climbed to the #2 position on CMJ Music Monthly's dance chart for June 2000.[7][8][9]
Her works have been reviewed by Billboard,[10] Spin, Rolling Stone, Urb, Mixer, Mixmag, Raygun,[3] as well as Knowledge – the U.K. Drum and Bass magazine. In 1999, she was listed in Raygun's Who's Who of International DJs. She was one of the headlining DJs on Knowledge Magazine's 28 city Kung Fu Knowledge tour in 1999.[11] She also made Out Magazine's OUT100 list for the year 2000.[12]

Impact on music[edit]
Her work has influenced other artists such as well-known dubstep producer Bassnectar, who heavily sampled 5 A.M. Rinse (feat. MC Sphinx), the last song on her first album When Worlds Collide for his song Here We Go of his 2010 EP and single Timestretch.[13] Since the sexual allegations of Bassnectar have become known to her, Jordana has publicly condemned his actions as well as called out the fact that he never delivered contractually promised royalties for the above mentioned work.[14] Additionally, electronic rock act Celldweller sampled "Wake Up" off of her first album as well as "San Francisco" off of her third album "The Cities Collection" in their 2013 song "Uncrowned".[15]
In 1999, Drum & Bass/Hip Hop producer and label owner Hive approached Jordana to remix her song Defcon-1 also off of When Worlds Collide. Hive's remix appears on his 2001 album The Raw Uncut.[16] Jordana collaborated with Lady Sovereign on a song early in Sov's career after the two met through an internet chat room for StrikeFM.co.uk, an online radio station which Jordana had a show, and the now defunct UKGarageWorldwide.com forums. The two would later team up when Jordana under her Lady J alias, had Lady Sovereign MC for her radio show on Flex FM London.[17]
History[edit]
She first came to the attention of the music industry when she was asked to remix Blondie's "Atomic." Her remix appeared along with Armand Van Helden and Diddy’s remixes on the single.[3] A little over a year following that release, Mac McFarlane, the promoter of the well established and legendary New York City club, Konkrete Jungle, contacted her to create a themed song for a CD compilation/mix-CD. Jordana created the song "Konkrete Jungle" for that purpose. Described by CMJ as containing "menacing hardstep attacks",[18] it was released on the Ultra Records compilation, Konkrete Jungle - Maximum Drum & Bass, mixed by BBC Radio 1 Drum'n'Bass show host Jumpin Jack Frost. Following extensive touring throughout North America and abroad as a music producer, Liquid Sky Music, an indie label distributed by Caroline Distribution signed her to a three-album contract in late 1996.
Hate crime in Ohio[edit]
On the night of February 22, 2000 in Kent, Ohio, Jordana was attacked and brutally beaten in a transphobic hate crime by a group of men including Matthew Gostlin.[19] Gostlin and other assailants vaulted her in the parking lot outside of the Robin Hood nightclub where she had just performed on the Cities Collection tour. The attack took place while she was escorted from the event with the event promoter to his car. The group of men attacked suddenly and Jordana lost consciousness almost immediately after being struck in the face. She suffered nerve damage to the lower part of her face from her lower lip down as a result. She was quoted, saying in the May 2000 issue of CMJ New Music Monthly that in the seconds just prior to the attack: "I saw his face. I remember the look on his face. It was this look of utter hate, like 'I'm going to kill you.'"[20] In an interview with the Village Voice, George Meesig, a man from Cleveland, Ohio who defended her during the attack, stated that Gostlin had misgendered her, saying “this is personal”.[21] Other reports noted by the Village Voice on the message board for Breakbeat Science (a Drum'n'Bass record store) mentioned transphobic slurs being shouted during the attack. She subsequently cancelled the tour to recover.[19] Gostlin, while charged, was never arrested nor spent any time in court. Her family was told by the Portage County (Ohio) prosecutor's office that attempts had been made to serve the warrant but Gostlin's whereabouts were unknown. She felt that justice would not be served so she left the United States for England due to concerns about personal safety and well-being.
Additional work in music industry[edit]
In addition to music production, Jordana is a DJ, musician and singer. From 2001 to 2002, she worked at Flex FM in London, England as Lady J, with Lady Sovereign performing for her during her radio show.[22] In 2002, she held a club residency performing UK garage, 2-step garage and house music at the club Trinity in Vauxhall neighborhood.
After returning to the United States, Jordana returned to rock and fronted a goth metal band in Seattle. Prior to that, she was asked to play bass in another band briefly where she met and became close friends with singer/songwriter Shelita Burke. She has toured the world and played many DJ sets. She has been billed alongside Arca for Planet Zolean: Un/Tuck + Hot Mass on the Currents.FM Common Multiverse Initiative.[23] She was featured on the Dekmantel Podcast.[24] She was featured as Mix of the Day for Resident Advisor.[25]
In 2014, Jordana scored the documentary Free CeCe, produced and directed by Jacqueline Gares and Laverne Cox. The documentary details the struggles of CeCe McDonald, an African-American transwoman wrongfully incarcerated for murder for defending herself against a hate attack on her outside a Minneapolis bar.[26][27]
Literary mentions[edit]
She has been featured in several books. Her success in rising from living in a "rust belt" city to being an MTV-featured electronic music artist was mentioned in "The Rise of the Creative Class" by economist Richard Florida. She appears in two books detailing American electronic dance music scene history: Michaelangelo Matos's The Underground is Massive,[28] and Rave Culture, an Insider's Overview by Jimi Fritz and Virginia Smallfry.[29]
An interview with Jordana was featured in multiple books, including a book published in 2012 by rock journalist George Petros.[30] She has spoken on her personal life in interviews for publications such as The Festival Voice,[31] The Brooklyn Rail[32] and href zine.[33]
Personal life[edit]
She currently lives in Seattle, Washington.

KOKIA in flashback - 2006
The year of 2006 is an exciting one for KOKIA. She has gone abroad to perform before, but now she makes it all the way to Europe for concerts in Paris, France and represents Japan at MIDEM 2006, the World Music Market, in Cannes. Her new album aigakikoeru ('listen for the love') even gets a French/European release in November, ahead of the Japanese release next year and with an exclusive track. It is not her first album this year; she has enough songs to compile her first best of-album, resulting in the release of Pearl and Jewel, collecting her best of songs and promotional videos respectively.
Although KOKIA has been creating music for games and (animated) series and movies since the beginning of her career, the start of 2006 puts the spotlight on her with the single Ai no melody/chouwa oto ('melody of love/sound of harmony'), the opening and ending song for the movie Origin: Spirits of the Past (Giniro no kami no Agito in Japanese). Especially Chouwa oto ~with reflection~ turns into a much-requested hit, with KOKIA still regularly performing this song almost 20 years later. It is a new version of Chouwa, the first song on her album trip trip from 2002, which incorporates KOKIA-go ('KOKIA-language') by reversing the syllables of the Japanese lyrics.
And last but most definitely not least, 2006 is the year KOKIA becomes independent. In May, she decides to start her own private office, anco&co, which she runs to this day, in order to more freely express herself as an artist rather than being tied to the Japanese music scene. Aigakikoeru is her first release after her independence.
She starts her 47 Stories concerts this year, intending to visit all 47 prefectures of Japan, although in the end doesn't manage to get to all 47.
