Having found one of my favorite childhood shows is back on Netflix, I decided to make some art to celebrate my rekindled obsession with Code Lyoko, haha. Probably gonna make more Code Lyoko art, but I had to make one of my favorite digital girl!
(I also managed to get my roommate into the show, even though she can only watch the original French, which is a fun experience since I only watched the english dub.) I hope my fellow Lyoko warriors enjoy!

I need to rant about Code Lyoko.
I watched this show as a kid, a little ten year old if recall correctly, and I was OBSESSED with it. I loved the characters, I loved the music, I loved the story and the concept and it really shaped my life in a lot of ways but I never got to finish it as a kid.
Fast-forward fifteen years and here we are, Netflix comes out of left field with my favorite childhood TV show and I'm stoked - LIKE I'M REALLY STOKED, this is what I've been waiting for, this is it! I can finally see what happens after all the sectors are deleted (I had watched on and off up until about Season 3 and I had seen some of season 4 with William being possessed / on Lyoko - what's that saying about kinks coming from your favorite Villains?)
Tumblr media
Anyway, putting my favorite Good-Character-Possessed-Against-Their-Will-And-Forced-To-Fight-For-Evil Trope 👀
So I rewatch the whole thing, I want to refresh everything and enjoy the experience and relive my childhood. And I'm chugging through season 4, eating UP That William Angst, gotta save William, gonna save William, William isn't himself, he doesn't mean to hurt us - LIVING FOR IT - and then I start to get a little nervous because I finish episode 26 and I'm like alright we have 3 episodes don't be playing with me Code Lyoko I need some William Redemption in here, that's what I live for after this angst fest, we love angst with a happy ending-
Except that's not what we get at ALL. We get the Lyoko Warriors - whom I love very dearly, each and every one of them with my soul and heart - celebrating for like 10 seconds - MAYBE and then we see these little shits BLOWING WILLIAM OFF IN THE NEXT EPISODE LIKE HES STILL HALF-POSSESSED, LIKE XANA ABOUT TO COME IN AND STRANGLE AELITA - and don't get me wrong because I get it, it's all about paranoia, think about the lasting effects Xana has probably already given these poor kiddos and now we're going to add the fact that William was literally forged into a Xana Warrior to further tip the scales in Xana's favor - I've considered that it wouldn't be easy for them to just pretend like that didn't happen - but to completely drop him? To literally just refuse to let him be a part of the gang? First of all, not even looking at how morally FUCKED that decision is, but Bro he knows your secret, he remembers when you Return to the Past, you guys fucking decided to bring him into your group, you can't just undecide that he's in it. He could really mess y'all up - BUT HE DOESN'T HE INSTEAD HELPS YOU GUYS WHEN YOU NEED HIM EVEN THOUGH Y'ALL TREATING HIM LIKE A TRASH CAN AND THEN WHEN YOU FUCKS REFUSE TO LET HIM GO TO LYOKO TO REDEEM HIMSELF AND GET A LITTLE ANGER AT XANA FOR OH I DONT KNOW RUINING HIS FUCKING LIFE - HE 👏 GETS 👏 POSSESSED 👏 AGAIN 👏 WHICH WOULDNT HAVE HAPPENED IF YOU GUYS HAD LET HIM COME WITH YOU IN THE FIRST PLACE INSTEAD OF DISTRUSTING AND ASSUMING
Can you even fathom the amount of PTSD, the amount of guilt that William has? Let's just pretend for a second that it isn't all sunflowers and rainbows because it's a kid show and William's memory of his time possessed by Xana isn't magically blank, let's talk realistically here for a second. William would be so fucking wrecked afterwards, he literally would feel so guilty, he'd have some crazy bad anxiety. And to top it the fuck off, all his friends are literally estranging him. my heart literally WEEPS for William. THEY DIDNT EVEN INVITE HIM TO THE SUPER COMPUTER SHUT DOWN PARTY. WHAT THE ACTUAL-
I'm going to watch Code Lyoko Evolution ONLY SO THAT I CAN SEE IF THEY REDEEM THIS ENDING BECAUSE WILLIAM FUCKING DESERVED MORE! The last three episodes of Code Lyoko could've been a whole season on its own. Could've spent a whole season getting William back into the group, helping him mo e past his anxiety and his guilt, could've had him redeem himself on Lyoko and let the group rely on him, let him come through for them so that everything's RIGHT IN THE END. Convince me otherwise.

code lyoko: a hidden gem of early 2000s cartoons
pov: the year is 2009, every day you come home from school to watch an unidentified cartoon on channel JoJo; only for it to disappear and never come back to tv ever again.
Hello, it is that time of the week again. I will cut the chase for you so- Basically, this semester greatly tired me and in order to go along until the school year ends, I watch shows that evoke nostalgia to get high on the feeling of temporary happiness and dissociate for a while. I am not even addressing the monstrosity that is the midterm, father-son and the holy spirit help a bro out, please. And well, Code Lyoko is exactly that show.
Tumblr media
(from left to right: Yumi, Jeremie, Aelita, Ulrich <3 and Odd) (there is also William in later seasons but I don’t claim him)
Originally released in 2003 but, received international release just as it was canceled in 2007, Code Lyoko is a French cartoon that graced everyone’s televisions at least once before it completely disappeared from it. For my experience, I encountered Code Lyoko on a channel called JoJo while I was waiting for Yugioh GX to start.
At first glance, it honestly looked horrifying with how children had comically big foreheads but, the story and the visuals hooked me right in. First of all, I could look past the giant foreheads because the characters were good-looking for my 8-year-old taste and, the background illustrations are still beautiful regardless. Despite being beautiful, the places didn’t change much and we only saw the school, dorms and the forest that was behind it along with the old factory and the word of Lyoko but, the budget for the show was not the biggest so most of the scenes were used and reused again and again throughout the seasons.
I’m not going to lie the visuals were not as pretty as I make them out to be but, I was 8 years old and it was the first time that I ever saw a cartoon that had both 2d and 3d animation.
Also, I fell in love with Ulrich but I’ll get to that.
No, no I won’t
Tumblr media
This is also a call-out post to me because apparently, I love everything that came before the internet and being online 24/7. Just like in How I Met Your Mother, as we are watching the world is introduced to the internet and what being online means so if I were to say that the third season is an inquiry on what the internet is and, how it works, I would not be that far off.
( Also recently Code Lyoko was added to Netflix so yeah go stream it )
Tumblr media
To dive right into the plot: a Japanese, and 3 French(???) middle school students walked into an abandoned factory through a sewage canal and discover a supercomputer that had an artificial world (Lyoko) in it with another artificial intelligence in the name of Aelita trapped in it. By contacting Aelita they alerted an evil system that lived within the Lyoko called X.A.N.A that manipulates and hacks electronic devices through the powers of Lyoko. So as any other logical human being would do they materialized Aelita into the real world and created her a fake identity to make her study with them while they fight against X.A.N.A in both the real world and the artificial one, Lyoko. Then the school principal asks, "Why did you do that?" And the overly intelligent 12-year old that somehow hacked into the national security system and created a fake identity for an artificial intelligence replied, "Well I am a classic nerd that fell in love with an artificial intelligence I had to make her real at some point!".
Yeah... that was not funny.....
Anyways, so this is basically the entire plot of the Code Lyoko brought to you by a walked into a bar joke that did not escalate!
Tumblr media
4 friends along with their new materialized friend Aelita try to protect the world against X.A.N.A and whatever it is trying to achieve... Is it ever clear what X.A.N.A desires? I’m not sure. I’m currently rewatching the show and I’m on season 3 but I’m kind of lost on the plot since I only care about what’s going to happen between Ulrich and Yumi...
SO, the kids spent most of their time trying to defend their school, friends, or themselves against X.A.N.A and honestly it looks like a tiring job. They miss important days, quizzes, exams... man... I don’t think they are even attending school... But worry not! Lyoko has a program called "Return to the Past" and when they are successful in defending the world against X.A.N.A in Lyoko, they get to return to the past and not miss whatever that they dropped to reach the abandoned factory.
Tumblr media
I vividly remember wishing, praying, crying myself to sleep to have a computer like that when I was a child. I still do actually. It would be great if I were to spend the whole day beating up various machines in a virtual world then set back the time to retake an exam that I already know the questions of. Ah, a university student can only wish...
Code Lyoko was mostly sloppy in animation due to the budget cuts that had to be made in order for the show the survive but, it made up with the heart and soul it carried. The characters are all fleshed out, just like the locations and you can sense how much thought went into each and every detail the show carried. I don’t know if it's still available on the internet but I would suggest everyone who read until this point to look into the bible of the show. It is one of the greatest bibles I’ve had the pleasure of reading through.
The show aired in Turkey in 2009 on channel JoJo. The entirety of the first season and a few episodes from the second season were aired but it was pulled from airing shortly after to give Yugioh GX more slots since it entered its final season. One of the reasons was probably because JoJo pulled most of its audience from airing Yugioh. I would not blame them since I discovered Code Lyoko while I was waiting for Yugioh as well.
After Code Lyoko was pulled off from airing I forgot about it and did not think about it until recently. During our first year, while I was talking Asya’s ear off about an unrelated cartoon, I randomly remembered the theme song of Code Lyoko, and all came back to me. The sweet nostalgia. I also remember making my friends at the table watch a few episodes of it during our lunchbreak.
I am honestly glad that Code Lyoko was not one of the cartoons that got away from me. Aside from the addicting nostalgia, it gives me, it holds such a special place in my heart that I don’t think any other show can fill (maybe Yugioh GX can fill it but I will have to debate it with myself for a while).
So please, if you have time give this low-budget french cartoon a chance it will not disappoint you.
Tumblr media
(also just a warning ulrich and yumi’s pining is one of the slowest of burns I’ve ever witnessed so be careful while rooting for them)

Watching Code Lyoko on Netflix
I know so many spoilers for this show I only watched, like, 15% of when it was airing.
Season One
Wow... The animation has not aged well. That's painful.
You'd think the worst part would be whatever Ulrich and Yumi have going on but no...
The worst part is return to the past erasing the secondary characters' character development.
I can't believe this show made it past the pilot.
I mean, I'm glad it did, but really? A giant teddy bear?
XANA on Earth: OP as heck, turns off gravity wtf, casually hacks a space laser, tries to trigger a nuclear meltdown.
XANA on Lyoko: needs a 3:1 monster ratio for a 50/50 chance of stopping one(1) prepubescent teen
Oh my God, these kids need therapy.
IDK if the writers know this but computer viruses can't possess organic matter.
Season Two
Is it my imagination or is the animation a little better?
Aileta on Earth, yay!
F*** you too, XANA!
IDK if the writers know this but computer viruses cannot possess the weather! WTF!?
Going from not being able to possess humans to being able to possess anyone is kinda cool though. In an evil sorta way.
Ulrich, I like you but you need to get over yourself.
William, you are very lucky this isn't Miraculous Ladybug or you would've been punched in the face.
Aileta and Odd are my favorite characters.
Oh my God, these kids need therapy!
Holy s***! The bad guy won!
Season Three
Oh, yes. That's much better. Easier on the eyes.
Lol, they build up Yumi and Ulrich for two seasons
Only for Yumi to decide she isn't putting up with this drama
Queen.
IDK, if XANA can possess an entire bus full of people you'd think he'd try that trick again.
The running gag with Jim's former jobs. "I'd rather not talk about it," he says after bringing it up is hilarious, actually.
Aileta gets to be the badass I knew she could be even without being possessed.
(XANA possessed Aileta is so OP, regular Aileta should use her powers like that more often.)
I love how these kids get to be flawed, actually.
And they're not afraid to call each other out.
Odd is really dependable on Lyoko, actually.
Lol, okay Ulrich. That was kind of a funny way to apologize.
William, you are very lucky this isn't Miraculous Ladybug or you would've been punched in the face.
That random doctor is pretty badass. I like her.
Wow, I didn't think they'd address Odd not getting visions anymore... Take the teleportation Odd!
. . . M'kay the teachers are kinda jerks, actually.
I really like Yumi being the one against recruiting William instead of Ulrich.
XANA threw Jeremy in the river! That jerk!
How many jobs has Jim had!?
I really hate Ulrich's dad, actually. He deserves better.
RIP William
Oh my God, these kids need therapy!
I can't believe they kidnapped Odd's dog to perform a science experiment on, lol. Rude.
I can't believe Sissy was this close to being a Lyoko Warrior.
Aileta is so selfless, I love her.
Season Four
I'm digging the new looks.
No offence William but you're much more interesting possessed.
You'd think they'd make a bigger deal of remaking Lyoko from scratch after it was destroyed.
I like them expanding Aileta's interests beyond Lyoko. More please.
. . . Are we sure the copies aren't sentient? I'm worried about copy!William.
Jeremy's right. It is about time everyone learned how to use the scanners.
Lol, the funniest thing about Aileta and Odd's fight is how they annoy Ulrich and Yumi.
. . . Wow, devirtualizing your friends must be traumatizing.
The number of "secret" government space lasers is worrying, actually.
Yumi's little brother is a little crook!
Using XANA's goals against him? Heck, yes.
Ulrich... isn't very good at plans.
Wow, switching the music gives it a different vibe.
LAVA MONSTER!
Okay but some of the jokes are hilarious.
Noooooo! Clone!William! He was so young.
. . . Kinda rude to blame a brainwashing victim.
He was just un-possessed!
Ooh, goodbye XANA!
😭 I don't even know you but Aileta is sad and that makes me sad. 😭
Last hurrah...
Oh my GOD, these kids need THERAPY!
Final Impression
I would like to know what happened to Aileta's mom.
It does get repetitive but each season mixes up the formula in interesting ways.
They were this close to XANA just winning, huh.
How did the supercomputer turn off in the first place?
How did Aileta lose her memory?
Who were the government agents that drove Franz Hopper into Lyoko in the first place?
Ulrich gets two swords and Aileta gets wings but what do Yumi and Odd get? New outfits?
Lots of similarities to Miraculous Ladybug, actually.
. . . No one let the ML fandom anywhere near these kids. I don't trust them.
How could you do this to me!? I have two AUs and at least one crossover that I'm never going to write in my head now!

Optional Prompt Challenge!
I’ve been thinking about this for a while so bear with me. This is both a writing and an art prompt.
Prologue:
After a couple centuries of bliss in their post-mortem realm, even paradise can get a little boring. So, X and Zero decide to go on a buddy road trip through cyberspace and see where the untraveled circuits lead them.
X: Shouldn’t we tell them we’re leaving?
Z: nah, less of a chance they’ll try to stow away with us
X: hm
we should at least leave a note. You know they’ll worry if we just disappear on them. Again.
Z: Okay, we’ll write a note before we leave.
The Note:
Hey guys! Sorry to drop this on you so suddenly, but we’ve decided to explore cyberspace. We have NO idea where we’re going but that’s what makes it fun and exciting!
Don’t worry. We’re fully mature electronic beings that can take care of ourselves.
Signed, X and Zero
P.S. If you feel you must come after us, we left through that mysterious portal that appeared a while back. You probably know the one.
End prologue
From here, said portal leads to a hallway that contains several more portals. Each one can lead to any anime/video game/TV show that has some sort of cyberworld or technology that cyber elves can interact with.
Such worlds include but are not limited to:
The Battle Network universe
Chobits
Code Lyoko
Digimon
GlitchTechs (Netflix)
Tron (Disney)
Skyrim
Sword Art Online
Minecraft
The Sims
Cyberchase (PBS Kids)
The Cyber World in Deltarune Ch 2
CaelOS AU (FNAF)
Or any other world/made up thing you can think of!
As stated above, this prompt is optional but if you do choose to do it, have fun and get creative!
Just make sure to tag me

Other Code Lyoko media and resources
It’s really great to see people getting into Code Lyoko again now that it’s on Netflix. I decided to make this post with some brief information about some of the other media/sequels people might not know about, plus a few resources I find particularly useful and will answer some of the most common questions people tend to have about the series.
Disclaimer: yes I’m the translator for the site I’m linking to, but I loved this site and its huge variety of resources years before I joined. The site design may be outdated, but its content is still quality.
Other media/sequel series
Comics https://en.codelyoko.fr/bd.cl There was an official French magazine that ran for 3 issues. Each one included 30 pages of comics that take place during the series, which you can find translated scans of here. The illustrator recently gave us the digital versions of these pages and the scans will eventually be replaced with those, but I’m not sure when that will be. The stories are short but sweet and the art is nice, so I think they’re definitely worth a look. You can also find complete scans of the magazines but they haven’t been translated into English.
Code Lyoko Chronicles (novel sequel series) https://en.codelyoko.fr/chronicles A four-book AU series that took place after the series finale. It attempts to explain some of the open-ended questions such as Carthage, Hopper’s backstory and how Lyoko really works, all within a more realistic and detailed setting. If you’re curious about all that stuff and interested in a somewhat darker take on Code Lyoko, I think it’s worth a look. (I call it an AU because they recount the events of the series and change them up a bit to suit the new setting, but in essence it’s the same story, just condensed into a smaller timeframe and with added detail.) It was never published in English but you can find a fan translation here in PDF and ePub format.
Code Lyoko Evolution (live action sequel series) https://www.youtube.com/c/CODELYOKOENGLISHOFFICIAL/videos A 26-episode sequel series that replaced the 2D animated segments with live action. It was filmed in French and dubbed in various languages not including English (they were planning to dub it in English but fans weren’t interested, so). It’s available on the official YouTube channel with adequate English subtitles. It takes place sometime after the original series and also goes into a little bit of Hopper’s backstory. It’s completely unrelated to the Chronicles.
Resources
Episode guide http://www.codelyoko-leguide.fr/en A guide with plot summaries, quotes, images and anecdotes/trivia on each episode. If you use the drop-down option you can also find guides to the series pilot Garage Kids and the comics. (Note: this was my first translation project so the English is kinda bad in places. For more accurate episode quotes, see the scripts/transcripts below.)
Image galleries https://en.codelyoko.fr/accueil_galeries.cl High quality screenshots from every episode. You can filter by episode, character or setting.
Renders https://en.codelyoko.fr/renders.cl A collection of official artwork (renders) with transparent backgrounds in the best available quality. Useful for graphic art.
Episode scripts (French) and transcripts (English) https://en.codelyoko.fr/conceptuels.cl The official French scripts for every episode of the cartoon and Evolution except 91, and fan-made English transcripts for the cartoon. Both of these have text descriptions of the action as well as the dialogue. As of writing this, the English transcripts for Evolution have been completed but aren’t uploaded yet. This page also has various other production documents like the graphic bible, character sheets, concept art and storyboards.
Analysis
LyokoStats https://en.codelyoko.fr/lyokostats/lyokostats.cl The site goes through every episode and uses a points system to analyse each character’s performance on Lyoko. Last I checked the individual episode breakdown was kinda broken, but you can still find the results summary ranking the heroes’ overall performance across all four seasons.
From Scripts to Episodes https://en.codelyoko.fr/scriptsvsepisodes There are always differences between an episode’s script and the final product, and this section lists those differences. You can sort of think of these as deleted scenes. The front page has a summary of the sorts of things you’ll find, plus a top 12 list of changes. The list covers every available script, so every episode of the cartoon except 91, plus Evolution.
French vs English https://en.codelyoko.fr/frenchvsenglish/frenchvsenglish.cl Comparing the original French audio to the English dub. A list of differences similar to From Scripts to Episodes. The front page also summarises what you’ll find and lists some of the most commonly-occurring differences. (To sum it up, there are a lot of small differences but the English dub is overall very accurate to the original and you’re not missing out on anything major by watching it and not the French.)
So yeah, I hope these will be useful. There’s loads of other interesting stuff on the site, so I’d definitely recommend taking a look if you haven’t already!

Code Lyoko is on Netflix and since it was one of the cartoons I loved the most in my childhood, I had to watch it again. When I was a child, I had a crush with the teenage protagonists, now that I’m old, I developed a crush with this adult character. It is part of growing up! haha. Anyway, I was very happy with this one, I really liked how it turned out ♄

You have to understand that I haven't watched Code Lyoko since I was a freakin kid! So I'm very much hazy on the later years of the seasons with details but several things I still remember that what made me in love with this show.
1. The theme song Netflix is NUTS if it thinks I'm gonna skip it plus look it up on YouTube for the full version I'll promise you you won't want to listen to anything else for at least a while
2. The one time when I didn't mind 3d animation
3. I loved the two couples Ulrich x Yumi along with Aelita x Jeremy
4. Every time when I saw Odd I would just stare at him for hours
5. I HATED Sissi
6. Did I mentioned I love the theme
7. Jim the gym teacher was hilarious even if he was a bit obnoxious
8. How Odd's dog wasn't left out and got spot lights time to time
There's others I'm sure but this is what I enjoyed the most out of the show I can't say much about William since like I said I'm hazy on the later seasons but I'm just so happy to finally be able to watch it again its been too long ❀
