Don't Mind Me! I'll be in Graphics Doing Some Homework.
Tumblr media
Evaluate a Library's Comics Collection
Choose a library and a specific subsection of the comics collection to assess.
Spend 20 minutes examining the physical collection and 5-10 minutes examining the catalog entries.
Create a report that includes a brief evaluative description of the collection's scope, currency, diversity, and indicators of use.
Consider the following factors: location, organization, signage, and displays.
The Library:
Tumblr media
The Harvard Diggins Library (HDL) houses two graphic novel collections; one for junior readers and another in the teen space. There is not an adult graphic novel section. So, I took a shallow dive into the collection in the YA department, hoping to find some superhero comics!
The Comic Collection @ HDL:
Graphic novels, manga, and comics were all shelved together in the teen space using an A-Z organization style by author name. Apart from the signage at the top of the display and the 4 outfaced books, there was no further marketing for the comics collection or an implication anywhere else in the library pointing to the comics collection. The shelving pictured on the right of the display is not a continuation of the collection but the YA nonfiction display.
Oh, superheroes? Where did y'all go?!
The first item on the shelf was Thor: The Goddess of Thunder by Jason Aaron and Russell Dauterman. The call number for this title was listed as YA FIC AAR. Found one!
Tumblr media
However, this can be problematic, especially for teen readers, for individuals who may not be familiar with the authors of their favorite comics but rather the characters and franchise.
Now off to find more superheroes!
Scope:
The collection is small; however, the scope of a library collection needs to reflect who it is serving. That said, the HDLs comics collection is representative of the smaller teen population in Harvard, IL (Total Population: 9,477). Additionally, HDL subscribes to Libby (OverDrive), which creates a virtual access point to a larger professionally curated digital collection that expands HDLs comics collection exponentially.
The collection mainly consisted of Manga, with popular graphic novel titles and barely any superhero comics.
After a brief catalog search, I discovered that HDL only owned 11 superhero comics.
Tumblr media
Currency:
The comics collection at HDL noticeably made an effort to include current popular media within their collection efforts. The intended reader would immediately notice and gravitate to several of the manga available from hit anime shows. Some examples include Attack on Titan, Tokyo Gouhl, and Naruto; however, it is essential to note that these titles are older and act as a visible anchor to HDLs collection. Some examples of superhero comics on the shelves were Injustice: Gods Among Us (2013-2016), Hawkeye: My Life as a Weapon (2013), and Marvel's Civil War (2006-7).
Tumblr media
Diversity:
This was an area of opportunity for the comic collection. This collection focuses on hit anime shows to attract readers and passersby. While manga includes all genres as an art form and literary medium, the physical presence of these manga series is particularly powerful and takes away from the other titles on the shelf. When I think of diversity in relation to a library collection, Professor Rudine Sims Bishop's words about windows, mirrors, and doors come to mind, and from that context, this collection could be more inclusive of the lives of others. Ms. Marvel was a gem in the collection and on loan at the time of my investigation.
Tumblr media
Usage:
Some of the more popular titles were worn and tattered. For example, this copy of The Walking Dead has seen some wear and tear that is common for paperback circulation in public and school libraries. The paperbacks in the collection did not have any additional life-preserving covering added, such as hard laminate. The majority of the manga collection was intact and had minimal signs of damage. The concern here was whether or not the resources were seeing any movement in circulation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Overall, HDL represents popular media and teen inclusivity well, but there is room for improvement regarding shelving and location for their comics collection.
One way to improve the comics section would be to move it to a more prominent location in the library. The comics section is located in a small corner of the library in the teen space, which makes it easy to miss. Moving the comics section to a more central location would make it more visible to library patrons and encourage more people to check out comics.
Currently, the comics are organized by author (A-Z), which can make it difficult for patrons to find specific titles. Reorganizing the shelves by genre, theme, or publishing house would make it easier for patrons to find the comics they are looking for.
Despite these minor criticisms, the comics section of this public library is a valuable resource for library patrons of all ages in the community. The library does an ok job of selecting a variety of titles.
Recommendations:
Add more graphic novels to the collection. Graphic novels are a great way to introduce people to comics who may not have read them before.
Offer more programming related to comics. This could include author visits, workshops, or discussion groups.
Partner with local comic book stores. This could help the library to get more new comics into its collection and to reach a wider audience.
I hope these suggestions are helpful to the wayward Tumblr librarian!

What’s new in the University Art Collection?
What does sand, a moth and a fantasy garden all have in common?
Don’t worry we won’t keep you guessing. The answer is that they can all be found in the University of Edinburgh Art Collection!  Each of these things are key components to three new acquisitions into our collection, all acquired from the 2017/18 Degree show.
Each year we award a purchase prize to graduating artists from Edinburgh College of Art. The prize is a long-standing tradition of collecting graduate work from Degree shows. It is one of the joys of the art collection; as well as doing our small bit to support our young artists it means we get to continue to collect the creative output of ECA and record its history through the formative work of Scotland’s leading artists.
So, we thought we’d take a moment to consider last year’s degree show and share details of the works we acquired and their creators.
Aonoql,
Karen Maxted (2018)
Acrylic and thread on linen
Tumblr media
Interested in mark marking, Maxted collects different marks – scribbles, doodles – and creates incomprehensible and even surreal narratives. Her work plays with the human desire to find recognisable forms. Maxted’s degree show was a beautiful presentation of current work which is loosely based upon the theme of the garden, and the consideration of how gardens are zoned and their focal points. Aonoql is a good example of her process of arranging marks to create these surreal landscapes.
She was also the last student taking ECA’s Combined Studies BA (Hons) -another compelling factor in collecting work from her.
We are delighted to say that Aonoql has already found a permanent home on campus. The work is on display in the University’s newly redeveloped Lister Building. Go and see it in person!

Brass Bees and Flocked Moths
Jessica Gasson (2018)
Tumblr media
Oranges
Jessica Gasson (2018)
Print
Tumblr media
The Art Collection acquired a number of pieces from Gasson; a print, 2 brass bees and 3 flocked moths. Each of these works take their departure from Gasson’s interest in museum collections, medieval manuscripts and tapestries and interrogating the notion of classification and collecting. Conceptually these works a very appropriate fit for the University Collection and we had great fun scaring our conservators and collection managers when we told them we were collecting moths and bees!
The cast moths and bees, traditionally the enemy of collections, tapestries and books, sit somewhere between biological specimen and an ornament and highlight the historic dual aspect of collecting for knowledge and pleasure.
Using the processes of printmaking and casting Gasson also plays with her interest in physical trace and tactile nature of objects. The direct casts of moths are not simply representational of the original moth but echoes them and are ‘flocked’ to make them feel like the real thing.

And last but not least...
Untitled (Gothic Finial)
Jack Handscombe  (2018)
Sodium Silicate cast and bonded sand
Tumblr media
Made using the process of bonding sand with Sodium Silicate and CO2, this Gothic style finial is one result of large body of research and making by Handscombe.
The finial’s appeal comes from the tensions and contradiction at its heart. Although the bonding process creates an incredibly robust object, it still appears fragile;   traces of erosion in the surface suggest that any movement or the first gust of wind will return the finial to a formless pile of sand.  We love how it seems to defy gravity!
Although casting as a product of industrial manufacture, Handscombe turned to natural models of casting and fossilisation in this work. The finial, also seems to play between the natural and man-made. To this end moulding the finial in a gothic style is a conscious decision. For Handscombe, of all our constructions, the Gothic cathedral and the society that formed seems to provide the human form that comes closest to touching the organic in form and its function.

So there you have it!
These works are an extraordinary example of the quality of work that is produced every year by graduating artists. As well as being beautifully and thoughtfully made, each of these acquisitions reinvigorate our collection in new and exciting ways.  We are delighted to have acquired them and to share them with you!

This is a nice, succinct overview of weeding a school library collection. It was published by the California Department of Education, and while it does not have any “unique” information from the CREW manual, it is nice to see something pared down to two pages.
Tumblr media
It includes a nice acronym of the MUSTY definition (although this one combines the I-E into one encompassing “Irrelevant”), a short guide to more bibliographic resources on weeding, suggested guidelines on weeding by copyright date (broken down by Dewey subject), and a few other helpful tips!
I also appreciate that it is well designed, and easy to read. This can be rare for library publications!

Ink and Smoke: Two of the most versatile substances in nature. Both have similar characteristics that relate to how we as people see them and use their qualities to our benefit. Smoke and ink can be seen as a warning, a signal, or some form of danger. Smoke itself can provide cover due to its density, however it's also so light in the sense of weight that, if it didn't have an odor or tint, it would be unnoticeable. Ink is also naturally occurring. A squid uses it to escape predator as well as a warning signal. Its density gives it a richness in its appearance, which has the ability to be heavy and bold or light and fragile to the eye. These two substances serve as the inspiration of our next collection. Using the qualities and characteristics each obtain, we will create both a menswear and womenswear collection. Shout out to @trace drew for the tentacle illustration done for us!
