Back in May, I participate in my first Zinefest! Which had to be virtual because of the trying times we live in. It was by first public showing/reading of my work and not gonna lie I’m so I’m so I’m so I’m so I’m so proooooud of me.
I can’t remember the last time I was so giddy after an art event or zinefest. The energy at LA Zinefest was so positive and uplifting that I’m still smiling. I talked with so many rad people and shared a vibe of such joy! So many happy Brown and Black people in one space sharing the work that they love and so many happy people appreciative of what we made. I felt so nervous before this zinefest that I almost cancelled. It’s a weird thing that happens before almost every show. Usually when I’m so anxious the show is amazing and oddly that is what happened again this trip. Funny weird self doubt just have to push it aside every time and speak over the fear and repeat positive affirmations. I’m so glad I went and from the beginning the first folks that stopped by my table were so cool and funny we talked like we knew each other already.
Thank you David and Kenya. You put me at ease. I really like the new venue for the fest as well. This year LA Zinefest was held at Helm’s Bakery in the parking garage in two large rooms. Shout out to the organizers the table layout and access to bathrooms and parking was easy and clearly marked with signs. Great job LA zinefest volunteers as well for checking on me throughout the day to make sure everything was going well. Also this fest was full of people who had previously bought from me and came back to buy new stuff. I am so humbled and grateful for return customers.
These types of interactions is why I continue to make art and create zines and put my heart into my work. I love that I’ve touched someone enough that they remember me and want new comics or zines. I also had a really good experience with my table mates Sophie and Iris. So sweet and smart and talented. I can’t help but smile and laugh when I think about this past weekend. Just amazing L.A. So many feels. Thank you LA Zinefest! This fest was just what I needed.
I took alot of photos and wish I had time to walk around and buy stuff.
I did get to reconnect with a couple of folks that have moved away from the SF Bay Area. Great to see Golden and Whitney. Of course I love that the Bay is so well represented with all the regulars. I won’t name everyone but such a large group of Bay Area artists tabling also makes me so happy. Here are some of the photos and you can find the rest on my flickr page here,https://www.flickr.com/photos/storm1sky/albums/72157708828033306
Happy International Zine Month to zine peeps all over. Here’s a #tbt of one of my favorite days ever volunteering at LA Zine Fest for my first time. Some of the raddest and hardest working peeps I’ve ever met make it happen every year.
Ari @arianlobon (on identity) for Extra Pulp “The first time I identified with an orientation it was bisexual, but as I’ve gone on a lot of dates I realize that its actually a very small definition for what I’m attracted to. I get why we have labels and they help us stand for what we believe when there’s resistance. I don’t know what that means for someone else. I fall in love with people.” . . . . #illustration #art #fineart #colonizethecolonizers #artcenter #artist #illustrator #lazinefest #lgbtq #gay #zines #sexpositive #design #photoshop #queers #femmes #lesbian #queer #pins #butch #woc #poc #qwoc #gay https://www.instagram.com/p/Bvw3nuDFswX/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1ou4c9phlw41a
