Development Questions for Couples: Colosseumshipping Edition, Part 5
Using this set of questions by @headspace-hotel to help me get in the headspace I want to be in for writing Wes/Rui in my fanfiction, and thought I’d share it here! I’ll be doing one question at a time per post. ^^
Previous entry
5. How do they consciously realize that they like the other character? Does it take them a while?
For Wes: He definitely becomes affectionate of Rui fairly early on, just because she's so kind and endearing and easy to be comfortable with. Once he starts to realize he's physically attracted to her, it's only a matter of time before he starts entangling the two intense feelings together. Just being in her physical proximity makes him feel both attraction and affection. This really doesn't take long; probably over the course of about 2-3 weeks. (My headcanon timeline of Pokémon Colosseum is probably only about 2-3 months or so?)
What takes (somewhat) longer is Wes being able to admit that he likes Rui. He easily gets into the mindset of "well, I'm a former criminal, and she deserves way better than that, so I'm not going to entertain the possibility of us being a couple." It makes him unhappy, but he tries to ignore that he's falling for her.
Until a particular instance where Rui is placed in grave danger (can't spoil too much for my own fanfiction, just in case...), and for several heartstopping moments, Wes thinks he's lost her. Thankfully, he's proven wrong fairly quickly, but it's enough to take him apart and make him realize he can never go back to a life without her. She means everything to him. His hopes for a happier future, a better future... they all include her. And all of a sudden, Wes has to accept that he does like her, and he will never be able to pretend otherwise.
Rui still has to be the one who says it first, though. Lol.
For Rui: She always was attracted to Wes from the get-go, and once she gets to know him (and establishes that he's a nice guy that she gets along with really well), she makes up her mind very quickly that she likes him. But she assumes it's just some kind of silly crush, and that Wes wouldn't actually think of her as a potential love interest. They're just so different! Why would he be interested in someone as soft and bubbly and weak as her? So Rui relegates her feelings to just a silly fantasy in the back of her mind, and every time she gets Wes to smile at her or hold her hand or hug her protectively, it makes her heart flutter. But that's the most it could ever be, right...?
Well, after one too many people questioning or suggesting they're a "cute couple," one too many near-kiss experiences, one too many serious conversations in which Wes makes her promise to be careful, that he would never forgive himself if something happened to her... she has to start wondering. Daring to hope that maybe he does feel something more for her.
Ultimately, she has to be the one to muster her courage and whisper her feelings to him first in the darkness, unable to bear the intensity of his eyes on her as she admits everything--
"I... I think I'm falling in love with you."
And rumor says she's still falling in love to this very day. <3

I am now convinced that Wes and Rui should have the same dynamic as the DeLites, where the entire Orre region is confused as to how Rui managed to land a date with Wes, (you know, the really cool looking guy who stopped team cipher that one time) but Wes considers Rui to be way out of his league.

Your thoughts on Wes and Rui becoming a couple during Colosseum? Like any headcanons for them in that scenario?
You have invoked the Colosseumshipper in me that has slept for eons hoping for someone to ask questions like this. Be warned that this will be a long post with a lot of text and all who feast their eyes upon it must know that this is my set of opinions, headcanons, and theories, nothing more. Let us begin.
———————————————————————————————————–
I think they are beautiful together. They’re cute and they have a dynamic for each other. The criminal-turned-hero and the girl who sees the truth of what’s in his heart. There are many ways to go about what might have happened to them after Colosseum, but I like the idea of them continuing to stick together long after their time in Orre was done.
Wes is by all means a criminal with a history of being the best in Snagem’s ranks. Nobody can say where he came from beyond Snagem, but I’d like to headcanon that Wes was a victim of various tragic circumstances that lead to him joining Team Snagem when he was younger, while at the same time, holding a true grudge against Cipher throughout his time.
Umbreon and Espeon were his “old friends” as stated in their summaries. They may have been with Wes since they were Eevees and evolved through their friendship with him. They may have even been with him before those “tragic circumstances” I mentioned earlier. This is my headcanon for what Wes held most value to in terms of friends and family up until his departure from Team Snagem.
When Wes and Rui first met, they would definitely not have had the chemistry they had now. By peer pressure of the Phenac City denizens, he took the task of escorting her in an environment that actively seeked her disappearance because of her innate ability to see the truth about Shadow Pokemon hiding in plain sight. But I suspect that Wes was also intrigued by her ability to see these Pokemon. If we theorize about of his incentive for leaving Team Snagem, he is likely fully aware of the Shadow Pokemon he helped supply to Cipher during his time with Snagem. Which leads me to think that he may also have planned to use Rui as a means to aid his own personal war against Cipher.
But when it was revealed later that Wes was indeed a former Team Snagem member to Rui, she did not fear him but saw him still has a hero. To her, he was her “gallant prince” who came to her rescue. But immediately after this reveal, she might have been on the same wavelength as Wes in terms of their goals. She was the one who suggested they find some Poke Balls first to make use of the Snag Machine he stole. Rui, with her knowledge of Wes’s method of stealing other people’s Pokemon, took as much advantage of him as Wes took advantage of her method of seeing Shadow Pokemon. Granted, Rui would have a more justified goal of helping the Pokemon than Wes’s quest to settle a score with Cipher.
And so from there, they stuck together in their quest to undo the corruption in the land and uproot a vile network of evil.
But in between laying siege to Cipher’s various operations, one can imagine the time they would have together in their casual times. Among those times for example, Wes took Rui to Agate Village to see her grandparents as she was going to before she was kidnapped.
Their bond grew stronger as time passed. They would stick together for everything. Rui would wait for Wes to finish his Colosseum challenges and cheer him on. They would even spend nights together in Orre’s hotels, to which details needs some investigation because whether or not they truly slept together in the same vacant room is something to be theorized. This question in particular is almost a Schrodinger's Cat situation except it’s Schrodinger's Hotel Night instead.
Wes has likely never known what affection feels like. Or at least, he hasn’t had anyone to see him like she does for the longest time. As a young boy, maybe even Michael’s age, he must have had a tragic event that resulted in the loss of his family, leaving him with only his two Eevees he protected with his life. To the world he lost and the world that remained, Rui’s intervention was an unexpected but welcome thing. His indoctrination into Team Snagem did not establish anything to fix his need for belonging. He was not loyal to them, yet he did take up Gonzap’s offer to join Team Snagem when he was young and likely vengeful against the forces that did changed the world for him. But that may have been before he discovered Team Snagem’s alliance with the very organization that was responsible for what happened that day. Thus the incentive for leaving Team Snagem so quickly in a fiery passion of explosions. A big “screw you” to Gonzap who very well might have betrayed his trust first.
So for this lone criminal who has grown up affection-less from a tragic backstory, press ganged into joining Team Snagem for exacting revenge, betrayed by an alliance he had no idea he was serving, and holding guilt for the Shadow Pokemon experiments he helped supply, Rui was exactly what he needed to prove even someone like him deserves second chances.
Rui helped prove to Wes that he can be more than what the world made him. Such praise from the people of Orre was very alien to him, but Rui helped him grow accustom to this new life. And with every victory against Cipher together, they grew even closer to each other. Wes no longer minded her company while Rui loyally stuck with him even after Cipher and Team Snagem were defeated.
And then, after Wes was graced with Ho-oh’s allegiance at Mt. Battle, they would stay together and see the world beyond Orre. And with this outcome, Wes would finally know happiness with this newfound life with Rui. This would be the best outcome for his relationship with Rui.
But in an a theoretical alternate ending, Wes would take Rui to her home, wherever it is. It’s true that Rui was on her way to Agate Village before she was captured in Pyrite Town, so who knows how she got there or where she really came from. But in this setting, Wes would take her home and leave her there before saying goodbye. Rui being emotional as she is, would think twice about wanting to be left behind and leave Wes alone. But in the end, Wes would leave on his own to parts unknown while Rui stays behind with her parents in whatever hometown she’s from, remembering Wes fondly.
In both of these scenarios, I headcanon that Wes would want to keep a keepsake to remind him of his close friend if they were ever apart by any means against their wills. He may not be the sentimental type, but in memory of Rui, he would keep her Moon Charm choker. Taking it out of his pockets to hold, shine its glimmer on a clear desert night sky and hold it close to his heart as he remembers vividly his stargazing nights with Rui during their adventures in Orre’s desert.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A tale as old as time these two. It is my wish to see them relevant again someday. As I do with everyone in Orre. Everyone deserves more than they’ve ever gotten, and they deserve as much if not more.
Wes and Rui will always be my one true ship to rule them all.
They deserve each other for all they are worth to each other. And I will always love them.

Pokemon Next Gen (Mentally Challenged Kids): Ginger “Ginny” Yūta
Tumblr media
Ginger is the daughter of Wes and Rui. She was diagnosed with Multiple Personality Disorder when she was ten. Wes and Rui signed her up for group therapy with some other kids, that was when she met Stella, Alika, Hiroki, Autumn, Yuki, Frances, and Pearl, Ginger was probably the last one to warm up to the group but when she did she started to like them and would agree to hang out with them, in fact, she allows them to call her ‘Ginny’ but only they can call her Ginny, anyone else will get a death glare. Ginger herself is formal, shows very little emotions, and she can be very intimidating, her other personality Poppy is spunky, energetic and eager to do anything, her last personality Coraline is cheerful and girly. Ginger inherited her mother’s psychic abilities, much like her mom she can spot Shadow Pokemon and should she see any in the wild she’ll catch them and bring them to her father so he can purify them.
Her main colors are black, red and pink. From black, Ginger is seen as mysterious and she’s protective of her friends, she’s also intimidating and unfriendly, but she does warm-up to someone after a while. It also represents her independence, a trait she most likely got from her father, it also represents how she’s formal to others and how she’s sophisticated and it represents how she’s aloof and serious even when she’s with her friends. Red is the color for her personality Poppy, Poppy is energetic and strong-willed, she’s always on the move and is always ready to keep going. But she’s also aggressive, quick-tempered, ruthless, rebellious, violent, and brutal. She’s the embodiment of Wes’s personality as Poppy. Pink is the color of her personality as Coraline, Coraline is a compassionate, understanding, nurturing and calming, she’s also very sweer and is in touch with her feminine side. However, she’s physically weak, over-emotional, over-cautious, naive, immature and girly. She lacks the will power that both Ginger and Poppy possess, thus making her the more emotional side of Ginger. She’s the embodiment of Rui’s personality as Coraline.
Her Pokemon:
Partner Eevee- Eevee was a lab experiment from Cipher, they wanted to try and copy Team Rocket’s experiment in making an Eevee evolve into all eight of her evolved forms, however, the experiment was cut short when the Cipher lab was taken down so Eevee could only have access to a variety of moves based around her evolutions. At first, Eevee was distrustful of the Pokemon G-men until she realized that they really meant no harm and wanted to help her, so she trusted them and she was able to practice her new moveset. That was when she met Ginger and got along with her, she was then given to Ginger after the others saw how close they are. Eevee is very formal and serious, much like Ginger. She will have a bit of a playful side but that only comes out when she warmed up to someone or has spent a lot of time with them. She stays out of her Pokeball.
Caught in a Pokeball.
Ability is Adaptability.
Moves are Bouncy Bubble, Buzzy Buzz, Sizzly Slide, Glitzy Glow, Baddy Bad, Sappy Seed, Freezy Frost, Sparkly Swirl, Return, and Hyper Voice.
Monferno- Monferno was caught by Ginger when he was a Chimchar. Monferno is a very energetic and spunky Pokemon, something he has in common with Poppy. Monferno is also very playful, he has the most fun playing with the other kids and playing with their Pokemon. He also loves to battle and will often be found training with Poppy when she takes over. When he was a Chimchar, Monferno was a bit more easy-going and a little shy and it was because of Poppy’s influence that he became the energetic Monferno he is now, he doesn’t want to evolve and would rather just stay as a Monferno. While he does have more in common with Poppy, he still listens to Ginger and is loyal to her.
Caught in a Premier Ball.
Ability is Blaze.
Moves are Mach Punch, Flamethrower, Power-Up Punch, Shadow Claw, Swords Dance, Thunder Punch, Assist, Focus Punch, Flame Charge, and Focus Blast.
Mime Jr.- Mime Jr. was caught by Ginger while she was on a walk with her parents, she found Mime Jr. was copying her exact movement and found it to be rather cute she soon started playing with him and allowed him to follow her while she was still walking with her family, after a while of having him follow her she caught Mime Jr. for him to join her team. Mime Jr. is a silly and jolly Pokemon, he’s always copying someone’s body movements and facial expressions for the fun of it. He’s also selfless as he’ll go out of his way to try and cheer someone up by being a little jester for them, which is something everyone enjoys. He gets along great with the other kids in Ginger’s group therapy as he’s always cheering them up and making them feel better, he also likes to play around with the other Pokemon and greatly loves to do what he can to make everyone else happy. While he has more in common with Coraline, he still listens to Ginger and is loyal to her. He doesn’t want to evolve.
Caught in a Dream Ball.
Ability is Filter.
Held Item is an Everstone.
Moves are Psychic, Dazzling Gleam, Copycat, Teeter Dance, Psychic Terrain, Thunderbolt, Shadow Ball, Psyshock, Helping Hand and Icy Wind.

Who is Umeko?
Umeko is Valen’s little sister, and that’s honestly the extent of her character. She’s about 7 years younger than him, and mainly exists because I liked the idea of the normally harsh Valen having one person he’s super soft on.  He has a huge weak spot for her, treating her much kinder than he treats any other person. While traveling, he stays in close contact with his family, making sure to communicate with them fairly frequently.
As such, Umeko doesn’t have much characterization past being the cheerful, bubbley little sister Valen calls a lot while he travels around.  She thinks her older brother is really cool, seeing him as a strong, determined person. She doesn’t fully understanding what he went through during his two months of being help hostage by Cipher, having only been 4 at the time.  Even once she’s older, they don’t disclose what he went through to her, seeing no reason to bring up unpleasant memories.
She is the first one to figure out that there’s a “second Valen” once he’s rescued.  She also ends up being the one who outs him to their parents, talking about her “other brother” she sometimes plays with when Valen needs time to rest.  Rui and Wes had already noticed something was off about Valen’s behavior, but assumed it was due to trauma and didn’t want to push him.  But once Umeko brings it up multiple times, they sit Valen down and ask him to explain why his sister keeps bringing this up.  Is it a game of pretend?  Is being around Umeko overwhelming?  Not wanting to lie to his parents, Valen ends up fessing up about the other being that he’s sharing a body with.  While they’re both understandably alarmed and a bit disbelieving at first, it does explain a lot.  Valen insists that he doesn’t want them to try and intervene, he’s okay sharing a body. Other Valen was the one who ultimately saved him in the end, it would be wrong to try and get rid of him.
Wes and Rui aren’t completely on board with this, but don’t push the issue.  They decide Valen’s suffered enough that trying to force him through treatment in an attempt to remove the entity will do nothing but make things worse (plus there’s no guarantee it can actually be removed).  They take a cautious acceptance approach, trying to be respectful of Valen’s wishes, but deciding that they will intervene if things get out of hand.  Seeing how Other Valen treats Umeko does soften their opinion somewhat, since it’s clear to them that he dotes on her much the same way Valen does.

This year, one of my goals is to fully commit to writing my Pokemon fanfiction—a story and a set of characters that I have been working on and thinking about for almost 20 years now. It’s kind of a long term saga, but the story I am committed to telling first is a sequel to Pokemon Colosseum (the game and the fanfiction I worked on long ago, though I never finished it). While novelizing Pokemon Colosseum is something I definitely want to come back to, this original story of mine is so incredibly important to me and will be my priority. The working title is Final Requiem, which references the antagonists of the story.
I’ve already written a decent amount, but I’ve still got a long way to go! While I have standard writing goals/word count goals/etc., another thing I want to do is write some writing prompt pieces. Specifically about the Pokemon Colosseum main characters, Wes and Rui.
Alongside a couple OCs, Wes and Rui are among the main characters in Final Requiem. My challenge thus far is, while I love these characters dearly and know them in my head, I am having a hard time solidifying them on paper. To better get a sense of working with them, I’m going to try do a few romantic writing prompts with them, both to establish their personalities better and to practice how they interact with each other.
I do not ship canon characters much nowadays; few pairings interest me anymore, and I prefer to work with OC x OC or the occasional OC x canon character pairings. But Colosseumshipping has never failed to get me, and it’s one of the only ships I love dearly. So this means a lot to me and I’m excited to work with them again.
I know Pokemon Colosseum is an ancient game, but I’m sure there are old fans out there like me. xD I already have a couple prompts I’ve collected, but if you have any suggestions for a Colosseumshipping writing prompt—a simple idea for a one-shot, especially if it’s romantic or cute—please don’t hesitate to send an ask with the request!
I can’t guarantee I’ll do them all—especially if I just don’t vibe with it—and it may end up being a piece specific to my Final Requiem fanfiction setting. But I will definitely post any pieces I do here. :)
Wish me luck!
