anyways you cant just watch heroes gameplay you need to play the game yourself. use keyboard controls on the goddamn pc port for all i care the point isnt to have the optimal version of the game (gamecube version) the point is to experience it firsthand with all the secrets and in-game dialogue and running bits and breathtaking stages. yeah there’s a learning curve with the controls but it’s genuinely the most fun i have ever had playing a sonic game ever because there’s so many different combinations of paths and mechanics and power levels and strats to use. go play sonic heroes ffs

Report Card: Takashi Fukui 🎮
Tumblr media
{ FC: Kano Shuuya }
Alias: YASHO!
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Birthday: May 21 {Gemini}
Height: 5'5" / 165 cm
Weight: 135 lbs / 65 kg
Chest size: 32 inches / 82 cm
Hair: Blond
Eyes: Light yellow
Status: Ultimate Modder/class 80th student
Likes: LED keyboards
Dislikes: Shoes with laces
Appearance: Takashi is of slightly shorter than average height, with light blond hair that's short and wild, and light yellow eyes.
Takashi wears a yellow track suit with a design of a black thunderbolt on the back of it, along with white socks and black sports slippers. On his jacket are several pins shaped like different video game console controllers like a GameCube, a ps2, and an Xbox controller. In each ear, he wears three silver ear cuffs and a pair of studded earrings.
Personality: Takashi is a happy-go-lucky, loud, and boisterous guy who's very friendly and loves being casual with others; ... sometimes to the point where he may come off as overly friendly, but he means well. He's not one for formalities and likes to 'keep it real', as he puts it: by being honest and saying what he means, as he hates two-faced people and ones who take advantage of others. He also can be pretty flirtatious with both guys and girls, especially girls he finds cute, but he'll never continue if he's making anyone uncomfortable.
Background: Takashi was always a big video game nerd, along with his brother. One night when he was a child, he begged his mother to take him to the video game store to pick up a game during a midnight release. She eventually relented and drove him there. On the way back, however... they collided with a drunk driver. They both were taken to the hospital. Takashi's injuries healed over the course of several weeks, but his mother, who suffered the severity of the crash the most; suffered severe paralysis throughout her entire body. This devastated his brother and father, with the latter becoming more cold and distant with Takashi. Deep down, he knows it was wrong to blame him his son, but the agony of the pain his wife went through, changed him... and Takashi himself, suffered severe guilt for what happened to her, fully blaming himself for what had happened. He did not even play video games for weeks during his spiral of depression, until his brother encouraged him to play them again to help cheer himself up. And to hopefully stop blaming himself for something that was not his fault...
Over the years, Takashi became involved in the video game community; specifically in the modding one. To help pay for his mother's medical bills , Takashi created a charity mod for a very popular retro game. It was like an entire game on its own, which became very beloved by streamers and Speedrunners alike. Fans and friends alike happily donated to his charity page. That, combined with the popularity of his brother speedrunning the game, made them reach their donation goal more than successfully. With that, their mother could receive the surgery she needed to help her recover as best as she realistically could. While she still be wheelchair bound forever, the rest of her body greatly recovered. His mother was truly grateful to her sons for helping her... and as one last favor, she asked Takashi to finally forgive himself. Takashi, who always felt bad for making his mother and brother sad for blaming himself for so long... promised he would try. His father eventually came around as well, apologizing for how cold he was to him and inadvertrly blaming him as well. He forgave him as well, and finally, it felt like their family was going back to the happy one it used to be. With the success of the mod and donation, would also get Hope's Peak's attention as well, scouting Takashi under the title of 'Ultimate Modder.' Shocked and proud, he happily took the title, with the promise to continue making mods for the video game community he loves so much, to enjoy together.

Help me relive my childhood
So VERY long story short, I have acquired a copy of Cabela’s Big Game Hunter 2006 and am trying to play it on my laptop using my husband’s PS4 controller. I have been able to open the game through Steam, and I have connected the PS4 controller to my laptop and can use it in Steam. The game works perfectly with my keyboard and mouse, and the controller works perfectly inside of Steam and on Stardew Valley; however, I can’t combine the two. Whenever I try to play with the controller, only the D-pad buttons work.
I have ordered a GameCube controller (the original console that I played the game on as a kid), but I feel like there should be a way to configure the PS4 controls to work with the game. I have downloaded DS4Windows and tried to use it as an Xbox controller and that hasn’t worked either except to let me use the touchpad to move the mouse around and click. Any other ideas?

The Single Dorm on the Top Floor Workspace
Here are some of the products that make this workspace an Amazing Workspace:
I am a bit of weirdo, so here's the desktop setup, my OS's launcher, and some more tidbits.
I live in a single room at my school this year, on the top floor of a new, 18-storey building, which I've taken advantage of by setting up my best living space ever.
More crap in my room - I've got lights hanging from my (still unfinished!!!) dorm ceiling, some POPs next to my snack jar (That's Mulder and Scully there), and one of my four instruments in the room, my banjo - I've also got a baritone ukulele, electric chordorgan, and a melodica, as well as a few smaller instruments. also, my glorious view - I love living on the 18th floor! The big TV is showing a custom Windy.com widget so I can track the hurricanes creeping up on me this week, though I'm sure I'll be watching Rick and Morty on it tonight.
The other view from the other side of my bed lets you see my garment bag, which holds nearly all my dress clothes, the door out, and my Irish flag because why not. I have not taken any pictures facing my bed, but rest assured there's drawers under it with all my clothes and whatnot, and a microwave. Because cold pizza only gets you so far. I'm not gonna take any pictures of it - it's super messy. Thanks for stopping by!
Posters - Left-Right, Top-Bottom is a Pacific Rim first-run poster I got at NYCC before the movie even released, VGHS season 3, Fantastics Beasts, a Matt Smith (not the actor!) Star Wars print (signed!), Guardians of the Galaxy litho, Tycho, Ant-Man, Link by VME, a spray paint print by my friend Toby (tobyartstrong.tumblr.com), and Columbia and Rapture posters. (I really need to frame all these posters, there's quite nice. You can ignore my giant messy corkboard, though it does contain my most favourite thing I've ever been handed on the MBTA - and honest-to-god christian flat-earther pamphlet. Beats all the Chick Tracts I've been given!
The launcher in action. It's built on Launchy, but I've also added some better web integration, so it does everything I need it to, just by hitting meta+space. I love launchers like this. S'why I built one when Google killed off the Chrome App Launcher
Computer - I hate fancy cases, so I've just got your run-of-the-mill Bitfenix Nova. Board is an Asus B150 PRO GAMING AURA (with all the goddamn lights disabled) with an i7 6700k, 32Gb of DDR4 RAM, a reference RX 480 8Gb, a 2Tb HDD, and a 64Gb M.2 SSD. "The Heart of Gold" runs Towel 20.1.177 OE, and is compatible with Windows 10, Android, and Unix-like systems.
Technology - Some crappy TV I got off of craigslist for $50, connected to my computer and my GameCube, sitting on top of my MANY STICKERED FRIDGE. (You can also see next to the fridge my contraband hot water boiler - I drink too much tea to leave this thing at home.) The soundbar under the TV was a random brandless Aliexpress purchase - I cannot recommend it enough. It's loud as all hell, really bass-y, and supports everything - USB/line in, bluetooth, even SD cards, and a huge range of file types. Best $20 I've ever spent. My GameCube and my Steam controller are on top of my case - I'll get to the computer later. The other monitor I found on the side of the road - it's a Samsung 1080p high refresh-rate trucolour monitor. I can guess this thing would have cost like $120. Colour is amazing on it. I use a shitty Logitech wired keyboard, and a brandless black wireless mouse - I really would love to get into mechanical keyboards and whatnot, but I'm broke. I am looking to get a smaller keyboard, however, so a tenkeyless board is in my future. Under the monitor is my Nexus 9 - the last of the Nexus tablets! I use it mostly as a third tiny monitor, or for what little drawing I do. Canon printer next to that, also from the side of the road, and a Yeti Snowball on top of that. I don't have a good pop shield, so he's wearing a sock as a hat. The little orange and white thing is a phone stand I made out of a bendy stress-toy, on top of my laptop - it's a Samsung Chromebook 3. I only need it for typing essays and working in class, basically, so it's great for me. Almost all the charging cables for all my stuff are right there there next to it.
All of this, minus the fridge, runs off of a combination UPS/surge splitter that lives under the desk behind the drawers - picked it up last year at a swap meet at my school. It's super heavy, but it can keep the whole lot running for up to a day without power, or just charge the mobile devices for up to 5 days continuously. It's amazing.

NES Classic Edition
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim first released in 2011 for Xbox 360, PlayStation three, and COMPUTER, and it became probably the most profitable games of the era. Beginning with the dimensions of the Unique Nintendo Entertainment System (Nes 8-bit). It was a very bulky system with a large number of cords. Nonetheless impressive for the first Nintendo Console. What it lacked in appears to be like it made up for with sheer modern ideas within the games. Nintendo produced hundreds of authentic titles that caught on like wildfire. At first, it seems the scenario is reversed with the Nintendo DS. Japan accounts for greater than four out of every 10 gross sales of both. DS video games and the hand-held platform itself. However, at the start of this 12 months, the ratio of software to hardware sales was still a bit greater within the Americas than it was in Japan. That's the case for all of Nintendo's platforms, though the video games per platform gap varies from very huge (GameCube) to quite slim (DS).This is a choice of some of my all-time favourite online game-inspired music. Some have been utilized in video games, some are covers and some are just mish-mash of the culture surrounding video games.
Tumblr media
1. Chrono Set off - Chrono set off's music was made by Yasunori Mitsuda and the preparations are completely improbable. From the well-known Magus theme to the nice battle music that comes all throughout the game, Chrono Set off set the bar excessive for excellent online game soundtracks. The Alpha machine combines the capabilities of PC gaming with an ease of a console. The gaming hardware options an exclusive person interface (UI) that permits you to navigate all of its core functions smoothly. You should use the incorporated Xbox 360 controller to carry out all the fundamental and complex features of the console, without requiring a keyboard and mouse. The machine comes with a power of Steam Large Picture, the global platform for downloading and playing video games and provides instant entry to 1000's of your favourite Steam video games. Dell claims that the primary objective of manufacturing the gadget was to deliver the LAPTOP-gaming expertise proper into the living room. The device welcomes the new era of enjoyable with its capabilities of streaming virtually all the pieces on your massive screen TV.However when you can settle for Descent for what it's-an epic battle in opposition to overwhelming odds-it offers an expertise like no different. You and your friends will develop in strength and trust from the first situation to the climax of your story, and that's one thing not often provided from a game performed with playing cards and dice.

Review: Killer7
Now you might be The Predominant Occasion!
Over the past decade, gaming auteur Suda51 has turn out to be a power to be reckoned with. His video games have subverted normal online game tropes and offered a few of the zaniest and most esoteric experiences round. Choose any random title from his catalog and you will be taking part in a recreation that’s distinctly Suda51.
Whereas his profession within the online game trade is for much longer than that, his first huge worldwide launch was the cult traditional Killer7. Initially deliberate as one of many “Capcom 5” for the GameCube, the sport noticed a launch on Sony’s PS2 alongside Nintendo’s ill-fated lunchbox and was met with some very combined reception. Individuals both cherished it or hated it, with no actual in between.
Having by no means performed the title earlier than, I used to be intrigued on the likelihood to see the place Suda51 lastly made his crossover from growing strictly Japanese video games. Whereas my opinion is a bit combined, I can positively say that this seems like one thing that solely Suda51 may create.
Killer 7 (Gamecube, PS2, PC [Reviewed]) Developer: Grasshopper Manufacture Inc. Writer: Capcom (GameCube, PS2), NIS America (PC) Launch Date: July 7, 2005 (GameCube, PS2), November 15, 2018 (PC) MSRP: $19.99 (PC)
Attempting to sum up the plot of Killer7 is a tall order. There are such a lot of twists, turns and fake-outs happening that offering a quick define may come off as deceptive. That being mentioned, the primary few missions give the impression you are happening a quest to avoid wasting Japan from some political turmoil. The sport takes place in an alternate historical past timeline the place world peace has been declared amongst each nation, although a rogue group inside Japan is making issues troublesome for the United Nations.
Enter the titular “Killer7,” a ragtag group of assassins who’re the one power that may cease the invading “Heaven’s Smiles.” As I mentioned, a common abstract would do a disservice to how subversive this recreation’s plot truly is, however simply know that you simply will not be stepping right into a generic story. As is the case with each Suda51 recreation that got here after, one thing deeper lurks inside Killer7 and discovering its secrets and techniques goes to take some severe dedication.
So far as the audio/visible presentation is worried, I do not assume Killer7 has aged a day. It could seem a bit simplistic, however all the pieces is extremely stylized and appears completely beautiful at greater resolutions. I’ve heard some dangerous issues in regards to the authentic PS2 port, however this new PC one is leaps and bounds past what the GameCube was able to. Possibly some individuals will not desire to have the cutscenes zoomed in, however a welcome four:three facet ratio choice gives you the unique presentation because it was meant to be performed.
youtube
Even with out that choice, Killer7 seems to be nice. The design of its aesthetic was forward of the curve again in 2005 and you can be forgiven for assuming this was a model new title from Suda51. The remaster is definitely surprisingly minimal, too, because it does not appear to have modified any of the belongings. That is an ultra-bloody cartoon with Suda’s signature neon-pastel coloration palette and no reasonable HD textures in sight.
There are some points I’ve with the PC port (like button prompts displaying controller instructions when utilizing a keyboard), however the low value and unimaginable efficiency make up for many of the drawbacks. Possibly it is not as straightforward as popping within the GameCube disc and simply taking part in, however Killer7 on PC is well the definitive model of this bizarre cult traditional.
I additionally want to present kudos to the voice appearing, which is great. That is one other robust go well with of Suda’s video games, however this wasn’t actually an anticipated factor in 2005. For those who evaluate Killer7 to different Japanese video games from the period like Resident Evil four, Dynasty Warriors 5, or Ninja Gaiden Black, the appearing is simply prime notch. It sounds just like the sort of correct dub that video games are solely simply now receiving, with loads of expert performances coming from the likes of Steve Blum, Jennifer Hale, Tara Sturdy, and Cam Clarke. I suppose that pedigree ought to communicate for itself, however every actor turns in a commendable efficiency that sucks you into the obtuse plot that Killer7 has.
I want I may sustain that reward for the gameplay, however that is the realm I really feel Killer7 misses the mark. To its credit score, the sport remains to be extremely distinctive and I am unable to declare I’ve performed something remotely comparable within the 13 years since its launch. Suda51 would flip his efforts into extra typical gameplay archetypes after Killer7, so what you get right here is one thing wildly off the wall and nearly indescribable.
Killer7 combines first-person gunplay with third-person on-rails exploration. Your character is restricted to shifting ahead by holding the A button and will be rotated with the B button to backtrack. You may mechanically flip in loads of areas, however others gives you a alternative of which path you may proceed. From there, you will then be tasked with determining the environmental puzzles to make progress to the subsequent part, which can require some backtracking or merchandise looking to attain.
Enemies shall be dotted alongside these paths that may require you to cease, scan, goal and shoot to defeat. For the reason that digital camera angles are mounted, enemies make a definite noise when they’re in your neighborhood to clue you into their presence. Generally they will be mere toes away, different occasions they are often throughout an enormous enviornment and slowly operating as much as you. The number of enemies is what drags this down since, regardless of their altering visible designs, they’re nearly all defeated by concentrating on a weak level.
To do battle with these enemies, you will have a number of seven characters at your disposal. Every character offers a definite play expertise, with completely different weapons and particular skills that may all get utilized sooner or later through the journey. Predominant man Garcian Smith, for example, won’t ever take care of boss battles however can revive your fallen allies should you occur to perish throughout a stage. Probably the most distinctive, KAEDE Smith, comes geared up with a scoped pistol and even cuts herself and bleeds in every single place to disclose hidden passageways within the surroundings.
There’s a gentle expertise system you will need to improve your characters, however there does not appear to be any actual profit to powering up your staff. Since mainly each enemy is defeated with a single shot to their weak spot, you simply must regular your goal a bit and pay extra consideration to your environment to do effectively. It additionally does not matter an excessive amount of as capturing makes up about 30% of the general expertise.
Boss fights do cap off every stage and they’re all completely different, however the fundamental format set forth within the first stage of Killer7 is how the whole recreation performs out. You go round trying to find a selected merchandise (sometimes “Soul Shells”), use one or two character particular powers, get launched to a brand new enemy sort after which battle the tip boss. Rinse and repeat for about 10 hours.
I used to be definitely gripped from the outset, however after round three missions, I sort of had my fill. The story is intriguing and the visible fashion has tailored effectively to trendy shows, however Killer7 is not essentially the most compelling title from a gameplay perspective. It appears Suda51 had one distinct fashion he needed to shoot for and all the pieces else did not matter.
The backdrops for every stage change and also you slowly be taught extra in regards to the Killer7 staff, however the common gameplay is simply the identical factor. Different boss battles do not change up what is actually an ultra-linear key hunt recreation. I do not also have a downside with linear video games, however when the problem is nearly non-existent, your paths are restricted to strolling forwards and backward and the one actual roadblock to creating progress is ready for characters to cease speaking, the sport begins to bathroom down earlier than the midway level.
I may have completed it quite a bit faster, however I obtained so bored at one level that I took a number of days off to refresh myself. I wasn’t even certain if I actually did need to attain the conclusion, although I’m joyful I did. There’s one mission in a while that’s really particular from its presentation and it seems like an nearly utterly completely different recreation.
Even with the shock of that stage, the finale is drawn out a bit and the twist could really feel prefer it comes out of left discipline for some. As with every Suda recreation, Killer7 requires some homework within the type of digging round FAQs and plot analyses to make heads or tails of its narrative. You may have to attract your individual conclusions from the knowledge given, although a few of that info appears intentionally imprecise to throw you for a loop.
It positively is completely different, although I am unsure I might name constructive factor. On the very least, even when I did not discover the sport notably enjoyable, it’s nonetheless effectively price experiencing as soon as simply to see the place Suda obtained his signature fashion from. Killer7 additionally does not have any sort of bugs or glitches and feels extremely polished. This can be a recreation created from a selected imaginative and prescient that does not kowtow to trade checklists. It actually does really feel like a relic from a special universe.
Even when I discover myself within the center with Killer7, I might nonetheless suggest everybody give this a go. It might not be a recreation you’ll want to end, essentially, however it’s totally distinctive and must be seen first hand. I do not assume Suda hit his stride till his subsequent title (No Extra Heroes), however you may see the seeds of greatness had been planted with Killer7.

11 thingies ‘bout me
I got tagged in one o’ those fact-writing thingies by @d-sally-b, so have some neat facts about me. oh, but there’s a twist - one of them isn’t trueeeeeee! #mysterious #guesswhichone
1. I don’t have any allergies, I’ve never broken a bone or needed surgery, and I’ve really ever hurt myself in an extreme way before. I also don’t generally get sick, either. am I immortal? it’s possible.
2. I can’t swim, but I’m tall enough to stand in pretty much any pool I’d ever want to go in, so it’s not really an issue. I don’t really intend to learn how to swim at any point, honestly.
3. I also can’t drive, and I don’t intend to learn that either (well, maybe some day, but not for a long while). I can get pretty much anywhere in England through a combination of buses and trains, and I don’t really go anywhere frequently enough to warrant my own car.
4. y’know how everyone has those things in N64 games that scared the hell outta them when they were young (OoT’s Shadow Temple, SM64′s piano etc)? none of those ever scared me, and really I don’t remember getting scared by any game ‘til Fable 2′s winter lodge. not sure why I was so scare-proof with that stuff as a kid, especially since I can’t handle horror games at all nowadays.
5. I currently have 76 amiibo figures (so not counting any amiibo cards). if I could have any new amiibo announced, I’d want one of Kumatora from Mother 3. but if we’re just talking realistic possibilities, I’m really hoping Splatoon 2 comes out with an Octoling amiibo.
6. the number 6 is my favourite/lucky number! I’m not really sure why, but for some reason I know it’s not because I was born on the 6th (of April).
7. even though the side-info on my blog lists my favourite food as ribs, they aren’t actually my favourite food (they’re a bit of a pain to eat, and it’s rare ribs are done right). I’m not actually sure what my favourite food is, so that’s why I haven’t updated my side-info yet.
8. My favourite Sonic game is Sonic Heroes (the GameCube version). the trick is to only play one route/team, not all four, or you’ll get bored repeating levels. Team Sonic is probably the best route, or Team Dark if you like long levels.
9. I’m pretty decent at drawing digitally and stuff (either with Photoshop or Flash) but I never use a graphics tablet for drawing - I use my mouse and keyboard, and either the pen tool + fill path (Photoshop) or the line tool + tweaking with the mouse (Flash) to draw.
10. I have completed (start-to-finish, not 100% completed) every single Metroid game aside from Metroid Prime Pinball. for a while now I’ve had this sneaking suspicion that the reason we’ve not had a new Metroid in so long is entirely down to the fact I haven’t completed MPP yet. I should really get around to it some time. (come to think of it, I’ve also not completed Federation Force yet - but I need someone to play it with first ;__; )
11. My favourite character in anything ever is Vivian from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. She’s not that useful in battle (Goombella is the best for fighting) but she’s adorable and I love & support her!!
cool, so, didja find which one was the fake?
with all that done, I’ll go ahead and tag my tiny bee friend @bunchajokers, @turtlemma if they’re interested in doin’ it, and @creempuff if they ever even come on tumblr anymore lol
I’m out, see ya

Video game hardware often serves as a hurdle for developers to overcome. Whether it's running out of memory or figuring out how to translate a player's interactions with a controller into a dynamic 3D world meant to emulate real life, just getting things to work smoothly is an accomplishment in and of itself. But with some games, developers take things further, and the end result can be better off for it.
There have been countless memorable moments in games, whether it's a well-designed boss fight, an unexpected character death, or an awe-inspiring view. But many of the best moments stem from the way games use hardware in unique ways to deliver something unforgettable. In other cases, special hardware or accessories are used to deliver an experience that otherwise wouldn't be possible with a typical controller or keyboard and mouse.
We've rounded up some of our favorite examples of the best uses of gaming hardware, one that saw fans use technology to turn an existing game into something very different, and a few others that were certainly original, if not very good. Be sure to share those that stick out in your memory with us in the comments below.
Metal Gear Solid
For a series chock-full of noteworthy bosses, it's a testament to the creativity of the original Metal Gear Solid that Psycho Mantis remains so memorable. That comes down in large part to the way the sequence utilized the PS1 in ways I had never seen before. The psychic FOXHOUND villain screws with Solid Snake--and the player--by manipulating the PS1. For instance, the screen goes black, which caused me a brief moment of panic where I thought something had gone wrong with my system.
In an even more brilliant moment, Psycho Mantis looks at the save files stored on your memory card and comments on them. He remarks on the number of times progress has been saved in MGS and points out certain games that you have save progress in. (Years later, this led to one of my favorite parts of Metal Gear Solid 4, where Mantis can't pull off the same tricks due to the PS3's hard drive and vibration-less Sixaxis controller.) At one point, you deal with with his powers by switching the port that your controller is plugged into, which I still find an astoundingly bold choice for a game.
Sadly, some of these things were specifically tailored to the PS1 and GameCube versions, and have thus been lost to time if you don't play them on the original hardware. Still, there was nothing quite like getting to experience all of this in the moment without any warning about what to expect. | Chris Pereira
Boktai
Famed designer Hideo Kojima could do no wrong during the late '90s and early 2000s. He won my young heart with the cinematic stylings of Metal Gear Solid and the fast-paced robot action of Z.O.E: Zone of the Enders. So when I found out that his next non-Metal Gear game would be a GBA game that utilized a solar sensor on its cartridge to fuel an in-game mechanic, I was instantly intrigued.
Titled Boktai, the game stars Django, a young vampire hunter on a quest to avenge his father's death. Equipped with his trusty solar powered gun, the Gun Del Sol, Django takes on all sorts of undead foes. This is where the game cartridge's solar sensor comes in; your gun only holds a limited amount of energy, and once depleted, you need to charge it by holding the gun up to the sun. But in order to do this, you literally need to hold the game up towards the actual sun, so the solar sensor can detect its warming rays. Of course, this means you actually have to play the game outside.
Boktai is a strange yet entertaining action-RPG made all the stranger by its solar sensor functionality. I recall spending hours playing the game outside--or occasionally cheating by opening my window to briefly charge Django's gun before retreating indoors to play until I needed another charge. In my experience, the only real drawback to the game is that you couldn't effectively play the game during the colder seasons--for obvious reasons.
I thoroughly enjoyed Boktai's sunlight mechanic as a kid, and it remains a joy to play even now thanks to compelling dungeon crawling and a slew of clever puzzles that took advantage of the game's real-time clock and day-night cycle. To this day, the game remains one of the most memorable and innovative uses of GBA hardware. If you can track down a copy, I highly recommend it--if only to experience one of Kojima's quirkier and more adventurous game concepts. | Matt Espineli

Sega Activator
Anyone who played console games in the early '90s is well aware of how many gimmicky controllers made it to market. Of the wacky lot of plastic trinkets that cluttered our basements, you'd be hard-pressed to find one as over-the-top as Sega's Activator for the Genesis. The octagonal ring promised to let you punch and kick in the real world and have it translate to fighting games like Mortal Kombat or Street Fighter II.
Sounds amazing, right? Well, while not an outright lie, the advertisements for the Activator may have been stretching the truth a bit. In practice, you couldn't simply punch and kick as you would hope; to execute a specific action, you would have to send your hand or foot over a specific part of the octagon. Each section of the ring corresponded to a button on the Genesis controller and contained a light sensor that detected when you crossed its invisible threshold. Imagine waving your palms frantically around your body trying to move your on-screen character, throw a punch or two, or god forbid execute a complicated combo attack, and you can easily understand why the Activator was derided by early adopters (read: suckers) who fell for Sega's brief marketing blitz. It is, at best, an interesting footnote. | Peter Brown

Pokemon Go
People still debate Pokemon Go's quality as a video game, but there's no doubt that it uses smartphone technology in an inventive and powerful way. By utilizing your location and some fiddly but capable AR, the mobile game turns your local area into your very own Pokemon adventure. It means you can explore your own neighbourhood in the same way you explored Kanto all those years ago. It's immediately nostalgic and emotional for anyone who played the mainline games and wants to be the one catching Pokemon and venturing across the land.
To some people, Pokemon Go might just be a throwaway mobile fad, something that went viral overnight because The Internet and that's that. But to others, including myself, it allows us to finally achieve what we'd always wanted: To transport ourselves inside a Pokemon game and be the very best, like no one ever was. | Oscar Dayus
Let's Tap
Let's Tap is a game, but it deserves an entry here for the interesting way it made use of Nintendo's Wii Remote. At a time when every studio under the sun was working on the next great motion-controlled game (bless their naive hearts), former Sonic Team head Yuji Naka conceived a game that utilized the Wii Remote's accelerometer, but without the user having to hold the controller in their hand. Instead, you would lay your Wii Remote face down on a cardboard box, and tap the box with your fingers to interact with Let's Tap's collection of mini-games. These included a Jenga-like deconstruction game, a multiplayer sprint race, and a basic rhythm game, among a few other simple applications.
Let's Tap and Naka get bonus points for originality, but the game failed to make a splash despite its inventive spirit. As former GameSpot reviewer Luke Anderson pointed out, "Let's Tap certainly offers a different way to play, but the games don't completely mesh with the control scheme and, with the exception of Rhythm Tap, could have worked every bit as well with a more conventional control setup." | Peter Brown
Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck
As someone who likes to tease and bug my friends, it makes a lot of sense in retrospect that I had such a great time with Looney Tunes: Duck Amuck, a game all about annoying Daffy Duck. Based on the classic cartoon of the same name (pictured above), which sees an off-screen animator mess around with Daffy, Duck Amuck tasks you with generally tormenting the character. It's a creative idea for a game, but what makes it special is the way in which it leverages the DS hardware.
Some of the ways of interacting with Daffy are pretty straightforward--you use the touchscreen to poke and prod him or to pick him up and launch him off the screen. Where it really blows my mind is in the way that it allows you to physically close the system, something which would normally suspend what you're playing and put the handheld in sleep mode. Instead, the game keeps going, and Daffy shouts out at you, allowing you to continue playing a mini-game using the shoulder buttons. It's a feature that I'm still glad that Nintendo allowed, and it made for an experience I still remember vividly more than a decade later. | Chris Pereira
NeGcon
Namco's legacy took root in the arcade, a place where games and hardware often combined in surprising and unexpected ways. This innovative spirit stuck with Namco; in 1995, it fundamentally reinvented the standard PlayStation controller in hopes of improving the experience of playing racing games at home. The result was the unusual NeGcon controller, which was split down the middle from top to bottom, allowing users to twist the controller's two halves. Compared to the digital inputs of a d-pad or the short throw of an analog stick, this wide range of motion allowed for more finesse when turning the wheel of a virtual car. Despite its odd appearance, the NeGcon found wide support from other publishers and could be used with games like Gran Turismo, Rally Cross, and Wipeout (including Wipeout Fusion on PS2). It's an odd-looking controller to be sure, but it fulfilled Namco's promises. It was such a success, that Namco would follow-up with another racing-centric controller only a few short years later... | Peter Brown

Jogcon
Rather than iterate on the NeGcon, Namco went back to the drawing board for the development of the Jogcon, a controller with a force-feedback-enabled wheel crammed into the middle. It was marketed alongside Ridge Racer Type-4--the final entry in the series on the original PlayStation--but would also be compatible with PlayStation 2 games like Ridge Racer V. Not one to forget its past, Namco allowed you to trick the controller into a NeGcon mode, which allowed for wider support, albeit without the force-feedback feature. While it didn't enjoy widespread success like the NeGcon, the Jogcon still deserves respect for packing force-feedback into a standard controller, allowing players to experience the push and pull of the road without having to invest in expensive and bulky racing wheel setups. | Peter Brown

Twitch Plays Pokemon
Okay, Twitch Plays Pokemon wasn't technically a unique use of video game hardware, but it was still one of the most creative moments in recent video game history. It allowed those watching the stream to control the protagonist of a number of Pokemon games, starting with Pokemon Red and continuing with sequels such as Pokemon Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum, among many more. Viewers achieved this by typing in commands--"up," "down," "B"--to make the main character move and perform actions.
As you can imagine, that made actually playing the game very difficult. Trying to beat a Gym Leader, catch an elusive Legendary, or even walk in the right direction is tricky when dozens of thousands of people each have a controller.
However, as we all know, give enough typewriters to enough monkeys and they'll eventually beat the Elite Four, and that we did. And when the moment came that this cacophony of monkeys finally beat the first game, pure joy ensued. We'd done it! Twitch Plays Pokemon had made us the controller and we didn't mess it up. It merely took us a brief 16 days, 9 hours, 55 minutes, and 4 seconds. | Oscar Dayus
Plastic Instruments for Guitar Hero and Rock Band
The plastic instrument revolution led by the Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises came and went, but its impact on rhythm games (and games in general) is unforgettable. GuitarFreaks in Japan preceded other instrument-based music games, but it never matched the reach and influence of Guitar Hero. In 2005, developer Harmonix nailed the feeling of shredding in Guitar Hero by simply pairing five notes as frets on the guitar neck with a small lever that acts as the strings in the packaged instrument. The other key ingredient was obtaining hit songs that captured a Western audience regardless of the diverse tastes in rock music, whether it be classic, punk, metal, or indie rock.
Seeing Guitar Hero in action for the first time with the plastic guitar immediately makes perfect sense: follow the pattern on screen and pluck the lever while holding down the correct note(s). In this regard, the game is accessible to those who have never picked up the instrument before but also challenges those actually knew how to play a guitar. The series provided an avenue to not just discover new songs but build a rhythmic connection with the melodies and harmonies of songs you already loved.
In 2007, Harmonix topped themselves with Rock Band, which cranked the concept up to 11. Not only did it retain the intuitive guitar gameplay, but the game included a microphone for vocals, a full drum set, and the option for a second guitar to cover basslines. The game really lived up to its name. It was the perfect blend of karaoke, Taiko Master, and Guitar Hero with the continued tracklist of diverse rock songs that satisfied nearly all tastes in music.
Unfortunately, the genre lost its appeal over time and the accumulation of plastic instruments became a burden for both retailers and consumers. The concept is still more than a novelty; dusting off those old guitars and drums can make a good party great. | Michael Higham
