Homemade wooden case and a vacuum cleaner cord for power. That along with a Morley power wah/volume was all I needed for most of my live playing days."

Went and saw Wicked pt 1 today and I just. Loved it so much.

(Somehow I managed to miss all the marketing / if there were any cast shenanigans, so this is SOLELY based on the movie itself and NOTHING else.) My thoughts, in no particular order (and with some spoilers ahead.)

My biggest fear was that the two leads would seem too old for the part, but they didn't.

I don't really listen to Ariana Grande that much? But her Glinda was PERFECT. She brought such lovely orange cat energy to the role; Glinda was so perfectly bitchy and stupid that it worked for me and I couldn't hate her, even when she was being The Worst (TM).

Also, both actresses have the "desperately trying not to cry" face down to perfection; Glinda in the opening song, trying to put on a brave face about "yes!! the witch is dead!!" but she looked like she was on the verge of tears the whole time? 10/10 no notes.

Whoever was in charge of doing the green skin did an excellent job. I don't know if it was CGI, practical, or a combo, but it looked really good IMO. They even gave her green freckles!!

THE DESERT FROM THE BOOKS.

THE CHOREOGRAPHY. Parts of it were weird in a perfectly Ozian way! But others were gorgeous! Two scenes that got me were the ~Mysterious Stranger~ and Elphaba's mom and then Dancing Through Life esp. with the library. IYKYK.

Speaking of the library, I also liked the architecture.

It didn't feel too long to me? I was immersed the whole time, but that could just be me.

Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenowith have a cameo that is just beautiful.

There were several scenes that were shot where, if Elphie and Glinda kissed, I would have thought that was the natural progression of the scene BUT I also thought that Elphie had a spark with Fiyero which is good because 1. I'm an "Elphie has two hands" truther and 2. because if Elphie and Fiyero had no spark, that would be a problem in part 2. 🤣

(Like, they didn't fall in love which I wasn't expecting, but there was a spark. When they first meet, and she's going through her "yes, I know I'm green" checklist, "no, I didn't eat grass as a kid" is one of the things, and he's just like, "...I ate grass as a kid." Perfect. 10/10 no notes.)

I want to hold off my thoughts on Nessarose until part 2 and I see how they handle her, but there were several scenes were I thought, "you know, if she decided to go evil because people keep disrespecting her autonomy, I'd understand. I wish she'd focus on the people who were being disrespectful instead of being a despot, but like... I get it."

STOP GRABBING HER WHEELCHAIR.

I loved how they really put thought into how a goat would teach, with various foot pedals to operate his teaching equipment.

My Mom got actually sad about the lion cub. :(

Fiyero brought some "Chris Pines in Into the Woods" sluttiness. 10/10 no notes.

The costuming in general made me Very Happy. I want the Shiz uniform, honestly.

As fun as clandestine squats or air pedals sound for preventing chicken legs, I love the idea that a combo of court posture, changes in direction/elevation, and whatever Essek is wearing/carrying makes floating also a little balancing act. He (dex 16) tried to teach Caleb (dex 12) at one point only for Caleb to flail around like an inflatable tube man.

Arlecchino - Gives you the most incredulous look she can muster. Outwardly, she acts like it’s the most ridiculous request anybody has ever made, and all but turns her nose up at you. Once she realises you’re serious, however, she will begrudgingly pull into the nearest McDonald’s. The stipulation, however, is that she’ll make you order it. If that means having to lean over her in the driver’s seat to do so, so be it.

Capitano - Just wordlessly rolls up and orders you a Happy Meal. He remembers your favourite order and any extras you might like, and always knows which toy to pick for you (this is an AU where the McDonald’s toys aren’t awful). He almost always pays unless you make a point to hand your card to him beforehand and insist that you’re paying. Occasionally, he’ll order himself something small - an apple pie or a bag of those McDonald’s biscuits, as well as a no-sugar soda (he’s a weirdo who likes the tang of artificial sweeteners).

Childe - He’s entirely on board, he’ll do an illegal u-turn to get you to your destination if you so much as say “oh, McDonald’s would be nice right now” as you drive by one. There’s nothing that can stop him. It also helps that he loves the food from there. He’ll order your happy meal, as well as a full family combo for himself. That man can pack food away like nobody’s business. He’d also never say no to you when you’re asking for something so innocuous.

Columbina - Her response is always something along the lines of “oh my gosh, it’s like you read my mind!”. She loves Happy Meals, and collects all the toys (be aware that she’ll bother you into ‘donating’ your toy if it’s one she doesn’t yet have), so she’s always super enthusiastic and will go out of her way to get you your meal. Half the time, it’s probably her suggesting you go get Happy Meals a moment before the words are out of your mouth. She doesn’t even like them that much (she’s partial to the McFlurries), but she likes the toys, and getting to hang out with you, so it’s a win-win!

Dottore - Will launch into a whole big spiel about how unhealthy chain restaurants are, the ethics behind them, what their food is made from, what the meal you’re craving tells him about your current mental and physical state, the whole shebang. He sounds super pretentious, and will continue to be that way until you point out that time you saw him crouched behind the generators in his lab eating a Big Mac he’d reheated using the warmth they give off. That’ll have him shutting up and taking you to the nearest McDonald’s in a heartbeat.

La Signora - She’ll pull into the nearest McDonald’s with no hesitation, roll up to the window, then order herself an iced long black without a semblance of pity towards you. If you complain about it too much, she threatens to leave you on the side of the road somewhere. She will staunchly refuse to buy you a Happy Meal, no matter how much you beg and plead. Though there are rare occasions, when she knows you’ve had a rough day, that she’ll soften a little and get you your meal.

Pantalone - He’ll go into a rant about how fast food isn’t good for you, and how it takes advantage of lower income groups in order to pedal food that he deems to be ‘greasy’ and ‘unhealthy’, and give you this whole snooty lecture about it before insisting on taking you somewhere nicer. Though, he’s not entirely heartless. If he realises you’re just seeking out a familiar comfort food, he’ll begrudgingly take you to get your Happy Meal. Though, if there’s anything at all wrong with the order, he can and will threaten to go marching back in there to scold some minimum-wage employees (in reality, he’s always perfectly polite to them). 

Pierro - He’s not really for the idea at first. Not out of malice or anything, he just dislikes taking detours and being in unfamiliar situations. With some convincing, he’ll eventually fold and take you to get your food. He always yells way too loudly at the machine and grumbles about using the little card-tappy machine. He also has this strange curse where the employees will always give him the wrong toy, and you’ll end up with the one you didn’t want. Even if you try to remedy this by asking for the other one, they happen to get it right that time. It’s rather ridiculous, but also pretty funny.

Pulcinella - He’s super enthusiastic about it and will take you there right away. Despite his somewhat dark and heartless reputation, he’s very sweet to those he likes and adores spoiling them rotten whenever the opportunity presents itself. Every now and then, he’ll order the same thing as you, just to give it a try. If you pay attention, you’ll notice that he keeps the toys and puts them up in his office, like a nice little reminder of the time you two spent together. However, he can and will mispronounce things and the secondhand embarrassment is downright painful. 

Sandrone - She is the embodiment of the memes where a girlfriend says they don’t want any food, then proceeds to steal their partner’s fries. She may buy herself a drink or hotcakes or something when she orders your meal, but she’ll insist that she doesn’t need anything more substantial for herself, but once the food is nearby, she seems to realise that she’s actually quite hungry, and will steal parts of your meal for herself without even looking at you. 

Scaramouche - Turns his nose up at you and scowls, telling you that you can get it yourself, in your own time, and not to bother him with such pesky requests in the future. If you continue to bother him about it, he’ll threaten to kick you out of the car and leave you, but eventually he just crumples, and moans and gripes as he pulls into the drive-thru. He can be pretty snippy with the employees, but you wind up with your food nonetheless. He doesn’t take any special requests though, so you’ll always end up with the basic meal and whatever toy the person who served you tosses your way.

layman's vibey analysis of the severance music

this isnt going to be crazy technical at all (charles cornell has a great yt vid that is much less... simplistic that what im saying) but that means i can share my thoughts with the least technical jargon possible! not a professional but as a nerd tier violinist, these are stuff that hit me off the top of my head. (One aspect per post, will rb to add bc this is gonna be so very long)

1. Choice of instrument

yep! even this is a big deal in the effect of the theme. the piano to me fits the composition and the show concept very well.

Instruments have different voices/feels to them.

Strings have the most organic sound, theyre very close to the human voice. The use of the bow allows for so much variety in sound color and phrasing. If it was a color picker, it would be the gradient slider. Full variety, no set limits. Mix elements at will. To use them makes music instantly more emotional or romantic.

Woodwinds/brass have a more pure sound. There are less frequencies fighting for dominance (if youll excuse that phrase lmao), making the sound less vocal and more instrumental. However, they are controlled by breath, and that is a VERY vocal element. sound can be sustained through breath, still giving it that singing quality that 'humanizes' the sound.

Given that, avoiding those and choosing the piano instead impacts the vibe instantly. Piano is a percussion instrument. It is pressed/hit to create sound, and this is arguably the furthest from the sound of a human voice. Going back to the color picker metaphor, if strings is the gradient slider, piano is the press-to-choose palette.

You press a button. It makes a sound. You can, within a very small range, vary that sound with the strength of your pressing action or the three pedals at your feet. But once you release the note you have zero control over the sound. No sustaining, either. Meanwhile on strings or woodwind, its like: play a note. Then Do you want to get louder within that note? you can. Softer? yes. louder THEN softer? also can! A thin, airy sound? Connect the notes in one stroke/breath, or play them separately? A strong, clearly defined beginning or a gentle, un-accented start, or somewhere in between? All possible. Endless choices.

So piano-- forgive me pianists; is pretty limited in phrasing. This is why it is considered easy to play at the start (press buttons. done.) and difficult to master (can press buttons now. how to make button combos express human feelings?). Now my point here is not to parallel the act of playing piano with MDR sorting (buttons+emotions= :0). Wait thats kinda cool tbh but i digress.

What I want to say is out of all standard instruments, piano creates the most inorganic feel, and emotional distance. Its not distant all the time, of course, not even most of the time. Weve all cried to Chopin in our bedrooms. But out of all classical instruments, the Button Machine is best suited to creating the simple, sterile, hypnotic quality that severance evokes.

It rings close to all these modern, unnatural sounds we hear daily, the ding of an elevator, the beep! of a scanner, the error sound on a computer. A cello might evoke an emotive tenor, a flute; the song of birds, a horn; the historic majesty of a royal announcement. A full orchestra, typical of film music, is even more capable of evoking grand, or rich, or straight-to-the-soul sound. But this isn't Star Wars. None of these are the sounds the show wants to create. We need corporate machine. We need routine. We need distant, and simple. We need severed. So. Piano! Already, without even considering the notes, the instrument is already creating an atmosphere that echoes the inhuman office world we encounter while watching.

PS!

What is VERY cool to note as well, is that while the theme and the music in the show's early episodes is almost all piano, the more we learn/the more Lumon's lies start to unravel, the more instruments are introduced. But the instrument use is still very in character for the show. For the dramatic moments, we do not immediately get a giant thick orchestra to build the drama, we get MIDI stuff! We get computer generated slides and sounds! Given the show's context, that hits even harder than a big romantic orchestral scoring.

And for the quieter high-tension moments, strings start to get used very sparsely, mostly just in high-pitched tremolo, like an eerie dissonant background whine. Just to make things a bit off, a little disorienting, a little bit wrong. So high and thin it might almost be a machine-like pure tone in itself. How absolutely on brand of them.

smell is IMPORTANT. if you smell good, you appear more attractive (in my opinion) and the order you are washing yourself + applying smell goods matter also

first, bar soap. i recommend the dove sensitive skin bar soap, but people are like anti bacterial soaps also! wash your whole body with this before anything!

second, body scrub. i recommend only doing this twice a week max, maybe three. i really like the dove body scrubs (formerly body polishes) because they aren’t very grainy but still get the job done!

third, body wash. make sure the body wash you are using pairs with the body mist and perfume you are using later. i really like the native body washes and the dove body washes. DO NOT USE THIS ON YOUR PRIVATES!!!!

fourth, deodorant. only apply to clean skin, and make sure your armpits are completely dry before applying!

fifth, body lotion. just like the body wash, make sure your lotion pairs well with the scent of your body wash, body mist, and perfume, ALSO DO NOT APPLY THIS TO PRIVATES!!!!! apply to damp skin. this locks in moisture and makes your skin soft and hydrated. the eos body lotions smell so good and are very moisturizing!

sixth, body oil. oil should be applied after lotion, it locks in all of the moisture that the lotion is giving you. body oil makes a huge difference in your routine. once again, match this scent to any other scented products you are using. DO NOT APPLY THIS TO PRIVATES!!!!

seventh, body mist. apply directly after oil to ensure it stays (don’t be dumb, i shouldn’t have to tell you were to not apply it again) i like using anywhere from 5-7 sprays, but if it is strong smelling, maybe around 3-4!

eighth, perfume. this should always be the last step because it is what you want to smell most. it doesn’t need to be designer, as long as it smells good. the ariana grande perfumes are more on the cheaper side for perfumes, and the sabrina carpenter ones also smell very good and are the cheaper side of perfumes. apply this on the back of your neck, you want your scent trailing behind you, you want people to know it is you that is smelling so good. also apply it below the wrist, DO NOT RUB TOGETHER. your wrist touches everything, so do not apply to the wrist, it will wear off quickly. i like to add 1 spray to my chest but that is optional! i applied it like this and i could smell myself all day!

remember, if the laundry detergent you use doesn’t smell good, then neither do you!

here are some scent combos i recommend (only includes body mist and perfume, maybe some body wash and body scrub but i do not have the widest variety of those!)

BoonRed– Taiya Handou

He is a master of development and modification. He works as a "delivery man" with the cars he builds. When he likes a person or a thing, he says, "I love it!" or "I bought it!" He has the ability to see things for what they really are, and he has a strong competitive instinct that leads him to make quick judgments. Even if there is a risk, he says, "Isn't it better to take the risk?" He is the type of person who enjoys taking risks in a positive manner. He is adept at using both rods and guns, and is good at creative fighting according to the situation.

BoonBlue– Ishirou Meita

An "informant", a master of information gathering. Usually a freelance spy. He always considers risks and makes calm decisions. He is meticulous and cynical. He fights alongside Taiya as if it were a "job he had contracted". He has excellent, dynamic vision and is good at precise movements. When he uses a gun, he is a one-hit wonder.

BoonPink– Mira Shifuto

A "driver", an expert in driving and maneuvering. She usually works part-time at various stores. Her pedal work technique is so good that both Taiya and Ishirou are amazed. She is a mood-maker and a troublemaker. After meeting Taiya, she began to show her true core strength. She fights intuitively with his unique sensibility.

BoobBlack– Jou Akuse

He is a "police man", a rookie cop who is passionate about justice. He usually patrols the town on his bicycle as a uniformed police officer. He is a serious and aggressive person. He is more hard than soft. He is confident in his physical strength. He mainly likes to use the rod mode of the Boom Boom Change Axe.

BoonOrange– Kenba Bureki

A "procurer," a master of procurement. He is a man who can be relied on to procure what he needs from anywhere. He has a gentle and soft manner. He is elusive and never shows his true feelings. He is more soft than hard. He is good at fighting by taking advantage of his opponent's movements. He mainly uses the Axe Mode of the Boom Boom Change Axe.

Friends of Boonboomger

Boondeals Boondrio (?) – Also known as "Boom Boom"

A car-shaped alien who fell to earth after being wounded. It resides in the garage of Taiya's secret base at his home, and usually lives in humanoid or human-sized form.

When in human form, he wears a self-made sun visor on his head. He is a first-rate mechanic, and he and Taiya, who likes to tinker with machines, get along well and consider each other to be best friends. He is also good at housework, and for some reason often makes curry.

Boonboomger's set of equipment was made with the help of Boomboom and Taiya. Taiya and his friends call themselves "Boonboomgers," meaning "Boonboom and his warriors. They monitor Boonboomger's battles from Taiya's garage and sometimes support him remotely.

Boonboom can grow to a giant size. The power is drawn out when the Boonboomger rides on it. It can combo with various Boonboomgers and fight huge enemies as a Boonboomger robot.

hi! wanted to start of by saying thank you for all that you do. you are the only one who's active that i follow out of the 4dbarbie 'universe' (lol i can't think of another word than that 😆)

there is something i wanted to ask that i've always been battling in my head. to practice surrendering/detachment, one must let go of circumstances and outcomes, but sometimes i feel like it's impossible to do that. idk if it's because of the lack of trust that i have in this knowledge or the fear of doing so and losing control leading to a worser outcome. maybe a combo of both aha. but this becomes very prominent when it's during deadlines or important work functions. sometimes i think if i didn't work or if i wasn't a student id have an easier time detaching.

but that's where i am at now. ive read loads of books, blogs, reread them but idk why i just fully put the pedal on it. i tried to go for a day without thoughts and letting that sense of doership but i think i was so stuck on the outcome that i was instantly out of this detachment phase. eeek so sorry for this long rambly ask but what is your advice on this if you don't mind me asking 😅 i just feel so lost 😵‍💫

Thanks but I'm not really on here all that much so I don't know if I'd call myself 'active'. I find it helpful to have periods where I'm less engaged with social media in general but I basically come back when I feel a spontaneous 'calling' lol so here I am now!

My advice would be to firstly, just try observing or noticing the thoughts/feelings/experience whenever 'strong attachment' comes up, don't force yourself to detach or fight it, simply just observe/notice it for what it is without adding any dialogue/labels/stories to it or engaging with the mind. This can be enough at times. You're just noticing you're already detached and it's just the thought/story itself that makes you feel like you're attached. If this doesn't help, then consciously choosing to let go of that thought/story should do it (see next step).

Secondly, start small with things that feel more achievable when it comes to letting go - you don't have to be perfect at it from the start. E.g. when you barely miss the bus/train on the way to work, when you're running late and run into another obstacle, or someone in public was rude to you for no reason - things like that where often there's a knee-jerk reaction but if you bring yourself back to present awareness, it's easier to make a conscious choice to let go of it all compared to things that have more deeply rooted attachments to. It's having an acceptance that you can't do anything about it (it is what it is), it's out of your control so you're willingly choosing to just let it go and there's a real freedom in that. It gets easier the more you practice and live this way. Drop all expectations. Just try practicing this for a while before you try to go all in.

Third, this isn't something I learned from reading but something I came intuitively to practice. It helped me personally and blu-ora also talked about it. Yes it's all about trust. This helps if you already have some working intuition/knowing or faith in a greater intelligence that all of Life operates on, it doesn't matter what you call it.. God, Universe, Self etc. Basically it's easier to let go when you trust that it will be taken care by God/Universe/Self. And it's easier to trust when you already do trust, not because you have to but because you genuinely choose to. If this isn't something present yet, you can build it up by focusing on practicing the previous step, as you let go of small things and decide to trust that things will be okay, as things turn out to be okay, the trust will build. The key is to not have any expectations, just have an underlying trust/knowing/understanding that things will be taken care of without your active involvement/control even if you don't know how things will unfold and you don't need to worry or fear it so it's okay to let it go and move on. Again, start with small things that feel available and then as it builds, the trust will serve and allow you to let go of more and more, including things that previously felt impossible to let go of. Be like Dory!! I recommend watching Finding Nemo and Finding Dory because besides being fun stories, it's about having trust and faith even when things feel lost and hopeless (I find spiritual meaning in most things I read/watch now lol).

Lastly, this was mentioned in step 3 but let go of all expectations. I was watching part of a video on a summary for the book Atomic Habits and it mentioned something that I felt could be applied to spiritual practices too. See this handy graph below. Basically, most people have expectations on progress being linear when they start something new while most often progress when starting out is more like that curved line, and at the start it often feels like no progress is made at all, it's almost imperceptible. This is what leads to most people quitting before they see any substantial progress, because their expectations don't line up with actual results which leads to the valley of disappointment, and they falsely believe they're not getting anywhere or won't get anywhere. Even the masters said to let go of all measuring of progress and results and just focus on the practice itself in the present - the results will take care of themselves. It's the expectations and constant measuring of progress that hinder progress.

Star Wars prompt: Rebels with nothing to lose.

Rebel/Group of Rebels get caught in a fight with Darth Vader. Considering the casualty rates of the Emperor's right hand man (100% dead), they start pulling things outta their ass. Yeah, they're shooting at him, but also one guy just hauls ass and throws a flash-bang at Vader. Another guy comes up from behind and YANKS on Vader's cape (Edna Mode: NO CAPES). One manages to get the cape snagged on a chain on a speeder and puts a brick on the gas pedal. Someone finds a Star Wars Taser and shoots.

These guys know they are already dead, so why not throw everything they got? Throw helmets, throw boots, who cares? not them.

Bonus points if somehow, something works, and the Rebels are able to live another day. This comes at a cost with a high-ass bounty on their head, but they very much get to keep their heads that day, so who cares?

Bonus-bonus points if Luke/Leia are in the group, pre or post anyone (Luke, Leia, Vader) finding out. I think the funniest combo is Luke not knowing and Vader knowing. Dude gets whaled on by his son and can hardly do shit about it.
