Ashley has been bouncing from foster home to foster home, but, maybe has finally found a new family. And then, she finds some body paint. This isn’t just any body paint though, it gives the wearer superpowers (that’s some paint). Awesome right. Uh, except, the secret organization that made it sorta wants them back. And, so, she suddenly has decisions that she has to make about her life, and if she can protect the family that she has started to love.
It was both a typical new superhero kid sort of comic, but, I also thought that it did a really good job when it came to the foster parents part of the story, and, it was a slightly different take on some of the other more classic superhero tropes when it comes to parents or lack of them. A really fun read.

Poison Ivy is at quite the crossroads in this recentering of her story. She had been Queen Ivy, almost a living god, but then she sorta died, and then was given a new body that she isn’t sure that she actually wanted. Then she eats some fungi too. And, she goes on a road trip across the country. Doing good things and bad things, and slowly dying too.
That is the awesomeness of Poison Ivy, or at least the modern Poison Ivy in the comics, she’s complicated in a way that the Joker or the Penguin or even Two-Face aren’t. She can be a megalomaniac villain, but then on the other hand, she can try to save the world. And, this storyline by the awesome G. Willow Wilson balances those two parts so well (with a side of some pretty good Harley Quinn stuff too). Poison Ivy may be all about the Green in the story, but, in this comic there's so much delightful grey story.
Poison Ivy Vol. 1: The Virtuous Cycle by G. Willow Wilson

Well, that was different. Also, sort of has a very good message of ‘don’t make big decisions when you’re tipsy or drunk’ (although maybe that wasn’t the main point of the book). Three mermaids do a spell so that they can masquerade as humans on land and get some more wine (they’re out of shipwreck wine). They have fun, that is until the next morning when they realize that they don’t know how to turn themselves back (another lesson, always learn how to stop before you learn how to go). And so they try to figure out how to live on land, while they also try to figure out how to return to the sea too.
This was so awesomely hilarious. While I have pointed out the lessons that sorta came up in the story, that was definitely not the point of this book. It was just a fun fun read, awesome.

Gwendolyn is the youngest of the King’s three daughters. And, she may be a princess, but, she’s definitely not a typical fairy-tale princess, and, when she hears the Prince that her father set her up to marry say that he thinks she’s ugly. She runs away to the forest and stumbles into the world of the Cursed Princess Club, and her life changes forever amongst the outcasts and cursed princesses who have made a found friends and family group.
It’s another comic that comes from WebToons. I laughed out loud when I read that Gwendolyn is from the Pastel Kingdom and there is another Kingdom called the Plaid Kingdom. The characters were awesome too. Each of the curses or other issues that the Princesses that Gwendolyn makes friends with are interesting. It was just an all around great way to get started on this fun series.

This was quite a fun graphic novel. It starts with regular Alfred preparing for both a fancy dinner to raise money for the orphanage, at the same time he prepares an outdoor fun place with all sorts of fun things to do for the orphans (he even must fix the bouncy house that doesn’t seem to be very bouncy at the moment, that panel cracked me up so much…). We then get thrown back to a flashback of when Alfred first came to the United States and more specifically Gotham City. He came to go to a prestigious butler school. But, soon, he and his fellow students are noticing weird things going on at the school, and, the need to get to the bottom of them or none of them may become butlers at all.
I’ll start with this. I really wish that we’d get a sequel for this. It was that good. Young Alfred was perfect, I could see the beginnings of older Alfred, but, he wasn’t written as an old man in a young kid’s body. The other students were also all awesome too, and, I’d have loved them to go into more about each of them too. Oh, and, the Joker/Harley plot added a little extra pop nicely to it, some of their jokes were seriously hilarious too.

This was one of the most interesting parts of the New 52 ‘reboot’ that happened a few years ago. (And so many ‘reboots’ ago). It’s about Ulysses. He was a human who was sent away from Earth by his parents to save him. But, now he’s back, and, it’s not a clean and simple story as it was with Superman. He may even also not quite be on the up and up, and so, when he and Superman meet, it doesn’t exactly go swimmingly.
The story was really fun, but, it was the art that I really loved in this collection of issues. My favourite panel was near the very end. It was of Lois Lane at her computer in profile, and, I just had to stop reading and stare at it for quite a long time because, because, the art in that panel 100% reminded me of Margot Kidder. It was amazing.

Jessica Drew, aka Spider-Woman, is going to be a Mom. All the while, she still wants to be out there, taking on the bad guys, saving the world. She also has Ben Urich and Porcupine hovering. There was so so much hovering by those two, it cracked me up. Oh, and then, she gets stuck at the center of a black hole where there is also a hospital. She has to save herself and all the other pregnant moms to be.
It’s interesting. There aren’t too many pregnancy storylines in comics, which is a little weird since I mean… many people in the real world have a job and then get pregnant and have a baby. That job just isn’t superhero. Such a fun fun read and the re-re (who knows how many restarts Marvel and DC do) start of Jessica Drew’s story.

Weirdly, I have not recommended anything Batman related since 2019. Yeesh... this one though. I was surprised when I liked this one so much. It originates on the Webtoon website, but I've been reading them once they're made into a Trade Paperback collections (there are two Volumes out right now in the Wayne Family Adventures, two Vixen NYCs, and one Zatanna). They are hilarious.
And, it is what is says in the title. It’s a bunch of short little adventures of the extended ‘Wayne’ Family (i.e. Bat Family). In the case of this collection it’s more of a web comic sort of storyline structure, not so much one big gigantic story, although there are connections throughout the book. It's a nice balance between story and funny quips and situations and stuff. And, did I say that it's super amazingly hilarious too.

Tyler’s grandfather passes away when he is ten years old. And Tyler inherits a broken pocket watch and old stuffed bear. He’s also not doing super well, having to deal with bullying and that sort of thing. But, his bear isn’t just any bear. It’s a bear that can turn into Herobear, and Tyler along with Herobear can go on amazing adventures.
The art was amazing (that red in the cape just jumps out so much). And, the story was heartwarming and complex, and just a joy to read as well. It was such a great book, and, as the blurb says, it is definitely a book that all ages can get into, not just kiddos.

I really liked how Rod Espinosa changed this story, and, yet, didn’t totally go away from the heart of the it. The Prince is definitely different, and Snow White is most definitely a ‘badass princess’ in this. And then there were the seven dwarfs, I loved how he changed them too.
It was a really fun read, and it was only made even better by the amazing art that went with the story.

Lily is a novice thief who dreams of being a master thief one day. The thing though, is that she only gets the little jobs. Pickpocketing, petty theft, etc. But, then she gets an assignment from the Guildmaster of Thieves that throws her into the deep end. A plot to end all plots, ancient kings, and a cult. Lily maybe should have watched what she wished for.
It was a such a great graphic novel. I really liked the art, clean lines, but, I felt the atmosphere befitting who the characters were. And then there was Seamus. I liked the Lily character for sure, but, my favorite characters was Seamus, with his beard and his gentle poking at Lily, but, also being on her side. Such an amazing character.
And, just one small warning, while this is for kids, it’s definitely not for little kids. (There’s some gore and fighting).

I’m unsure how I missed that there was going to be a reboot (via comic book) of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The original Buffy series was close to my heart back in the way back. Buffy is still the Vampire Slayer, she still meets new friends at Sunnydale High, Giles is still there (and Jenny too). But, while a whole lot of the story is the same, there is also a bunch of places where the stories have been updated and changed in general, and to reflect the differing opinions of now vs. the late 90s.
It was unexpected how much I liked this, and the first volume in the reboot was definitely fun. I have no doubt that there will probably be some stuff I do not like, because there are 10 volumes (plus other random one shot-ish sort of comics), but, it looks like a very fun read overall.
How do you do, fellow kids.

Azula has a new group of girls that she broke out of an institution and who are following her to sow chaos in the Fire Nation. But, it's going about as well as it did with her previous two 'friends' that she had in the TV show. When this second group leaves her to go save one of their friends, Azula manages to find herself in some sort of temple-like place in the middle of the forest, and it's most definitely not your normal place to take a break and recharge. She then goes on a bit of a self-discovery journey, but, will it change her, or will she stay the same?
I was really interested to see how they would take this sorta 'bad guy' in the series (it was most definitely complicated in the TV show, which was fun) and turn one of her stories into a graphic novel. And, I do think it was successful. There was a good balance between explaining a lot about how Azula may have turned into the Azula we know, but, also, not apologizing for the things she's done. A really fun read.

I told you there would be more of these… but not many, they didn’t make a ton, bummer.
It’s Snow White, but, yeah, not really. Miss Piggy isn’t Snow White in this, she’s actually the Queen. And, when she learns she’s not the fairest in the land (oh, those scenes cracked me up so hard), well, she’ll do anything to get back her title. Luckily there’s Electric Mayhem (the actual Muppet Band) and Snow White escapes with them, sorta, kinda…. Ish… It’s all narrated (ish) by Gonzo and Rizzo, and, honestly, that was just as good if not better than the actual story too.
I thought that when they took on King Arthur it was new and different and totally fractured (in the fairy tale way), but, this one is even more. (I had wondered how they would deal with the whole dwarfs thing. I shouldn’t have worried though). So, who is the fairest of the land? Definitely give it a read to find out!

Do a whole lot of people know what they’re going to do the first summer after they graduate high school? Ari wants to go to the city with his band. But, he has a job in their family bakery. He does interview people to be his replacement, and, that’s when he meets Hector, who loves baking and, suddenly… will love Bloom instead?
This is a little bit baking, a little bit of romance, a little bit of tension. It was a fun read. I really liked the art, especially the faces, Savanna Ganucheau’s shading just boggled my mind (in the best way). Awesome.
