Awesome new addition to this years Summit! The Mycommunity Cultivation Space ! We want to help others grow in their relationships and understanding of mushrooms, and for some the act of collaborating with mushrooms for food, medicine, love, and learning is a crucial element in this pursuit. Some necessary supplies will be on hand but if you plan to use the lab please bring anything you might find useful or would like to share with others. This could include cultures you care about, petri dishes, syringes, spawn containers, or even equipment you’ve outgrown (pressure cookers, alcohol lamps, glove boxes, etc.). If you have it in abundance, please share the wealth! We hope that this space will strengthen the community through shared knowledge, passion and resources. When we learn to live and work with fungi, they can open up new perspectives on the living world. If one fungus and one person form a new friendship in this space, it will have been a success. If you have anything you wish to add, please reach out before or during the Summit. There will be a facilitated hands-on cultivation demo after lunch on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Friday’s demo topic: Culture work. Sterile and non-sterile approaches. Friday lab 7-10 PM: Open Lab. Culturing tools available. Saturday’s demo topic: Making and inoculating fruiting substrate. Sterilized and Pasteurized substrates. Saturday 7-10 PM: Open Lab. Culturing tools available. Culture/ skill / gear swap space! Sunday’s demo topic: Growing mushrooms inside and outside. Sunday after dinner: Weekend culture distributions, open lab. Today we begin the release of our confirmed presenters for the WEEKEND portion of the New Moon Mycology Summit! Have a look at whats shes teaching! Fungi and Food Security Tess Burzynski This workshop will cover the basic principles of sustainable food security and environmental systems thinking. We will talk about how mushroom farming is a sustainable way to provide food, medicine and remediation to communities while operating in a sustainable manner. By applying systems thinking and basic environmental analysis, we can help solve food scarcity with mushrooms! Tess Burzynski is the founder, head educator and cultivator at @fungifreights Urban Farm and Environmental Studio. A Science degree graduate from Wayne State University, she works as an Environmental Project Manager and continues doing research with Mycoremediation in the city of Detroit. Her love of Fungi began in her early years exploring the outdoors. She is a member of the Michigan Mushroom Hunters Club and the North American Mycological Association. Throughout her studies she has learned the impact mycelium plays in the environment and how beneficial, tenacious and magical it truly is. Through Fungi Freights, her goal is to reunite mushrooms and mankind by educating Detroit and its surrounding neighbors about the benefits mushrooms have on health, food scarcity and the environment. Just a reminder for myself and others There's no authority but ourselves Taken from a #slingshot newspaper ages ago gifted and framed by @chasetheart @guerilladubber It's in my living room now but I plan to return it to our facility once walls get built and a wide open warehouse space becomes something once again. We've done it before and it's going to happen again. That process of being taken advantage of by landlords and being too eager to think carefully and ask for help when I really need it, isn't something I'm proud of admitting. But I'm moving forward because there isn't another option for me. Smugtown Mushrooms must exist because it's what I believe is a plan for the future for myself, the community near and far and of course the future of food & medicine. That being said: I'm asking folks for help to make the reality of building out a mushroom lab, growing facility, community space, education center and art gallery. That what Smugtown Mushrooms was and always will be, I just need more help. Like lots, but anything helps, sharing our story, donating monetarily or with your time and building materials.
