Happy Pride Month! Here's a few of the MANY queer characters from my TTRPG The Magical Land of Yeld. As a queer game designer and artist I wanted to fill teh land of Yeld (and Yeld the game) with all kinds of people, and especially people like me. Yeld as a setting is a pretty cruel place, but one of the problems it doesn't really have is bigotry against queer people. The people of Yeld struggle in a dangerous world, but they never have to worry about being hated or oppressed because of who they are, who they love or who they have the hots for! You'll find queer characters in every part of Yeld!

Happy STS!

Summarize your current WIP (or one of them, or all of them!) for me. What inspired it? What (scene, character, plot point) do you like most about it so far? What's been the most challenging?

My current WIP is a gen fanfic between a dude bro and his queer bestie as they as they ignore figuring out what they want to do in life (because high school graduation is not far away), and instead spend their rooftop lunch period figuring out what love is.

Or, in other words, the dude bro is a little freaked out when his bestie asks him for relationship advice and our dude bro thinks 1) he isn't paid enough to try to answer this question; 2) he doesn't even know how to put into words what it's like to fall in love or why he's dating or what he likes about his dating partner beyond the simple sense of "she's cute, she's headstrong, and she keeps me on my toes"; and 3) he thinks his bestie is vying for his girl when that isn't the case at all.

And so now, the dude bro has to channel all his cishet energy to try to understand where his queer bestie is coming from to try to give relationship advice that's as sound as a high school student could give.

What really inspired this project was I really like the comedic appeal of the characters from the source material, so I wanted to write something funny and relatable. In my own experience, I've seen people seek relationship advice in high school, and it was fascinating comparing how teenagers thought/defined what love is to how I'm starting to see that definition as an adult.

I think when we're young, we idealize and romanticize a lot of things about love. Until we figure out what it "actually is", and even then. Yeah. So I though it was a fun idea to revisit those old assumptions and give two young characters that stumped moment of trying to figure out something that seems so easy, but so hard to describe. And the added queer element of it is coming from my own experience having to adapt relationship advice I've seen and heard from others in their own troubles and trying to figure out how that applies in my own lens.

Currently, what I've been enjoying is the humor and the particular voice this story is being written in. It's written from the perspective of the dude bro (and I'm not a dude bro), so it's been very funny navigating how he tackles things and has to put into words his own emotions. He's not the most perspective character, in that he doesn't notice the subtle details or the unsaid things. He's very direct, so it paints a nice contrast with the queer bestie who's asking for relationship advice and is being unintentionally vague about it because it's not important in the discussion that he has his eyes set on a guy. And really, just the nonchalantness of how they tackle this conversation and both are figuring out what love is, is what's making this a charming write for me.

Since I've just started this story, the challenging part is like with anything, seeing it through to the end. I'm having fun with it, and it's not a serious thought-provoking write for me. It lets me be looser with the writing, and just see what happens.

Hi. School informant here, meaning that it’s my job to teach school kids about LGBTQ+ stuff, lemme break it down for you. Swedish sex ed varies drastically from school to school. Some schools suck and are on about the same level as the one you describe showing “the movie“, while some bring up safe sex, different sexualities and sex for pleasure. The queer community recognizes how bad this discrepancy is for people and therefore we have two organizations with different focuses that try to make up for the gaps in Swedish education. We’ve got RFSL, which is Sweden’s LGBTQ+ rights organization. That’s who I work for. RFSL’s school informants hold courses for school grades 4 through 12 about labels (specifically: gay and lesbian labels, bisexuality and pansexuality, the trans umbrella including nonbinary genders and highlighting the fluidity of gender identity, the queer umbrella, intersex and asexuality as well as aromanticism), orientation, identity, and gender, as well as norm criticism, the rights of queer people in the Swedish education system, and queer history. We are not allowed to hand out condoms or talk about safe sex during these, so as not to make the LGBTQ+ community and our culture out to be inherently sexual. How much we address sexuality at all depends on the age of the students. Then there’s RFSU, which is Sweden’s organization for sexual health and education. Their school informants talk about safe sex, sex for pleasure, exploring and expressing one’s sexuality, and the like. They give out free condoms. This organization values LGBTQ+ matters even though it’s not an LGBTQ+ organization in itself, and so they have a close dialogue with RFSL about including all sexualities in their courses and how to do so. The problem is that firstly, these school informants come from RFSL’s and RFSU’s local branches, and so in some municipalities where there are no branches or where the branches aren’t stable enough, there are no informants; secondly, it’s up to the schools themselves to book these informings, so schools with more conservative teachers and administration often miss out on them. On paper, getting school informings is listed as something schools can and ought to do in their equality plans but in reality, a lot of schools ignore our existence.

So, in conclusion, we’re not all that much better than the US in practice. But we try.

Idag är det pansynlighetsdagen! Dagen då vi i HBTQ+ communityt firar och uppmärksammar pansexuella och panromantiska människor.

Pan är en av de många identiteterna som samlas under “+” i akronymet, men det gör dem inte mindre viktiga eller mindre verkliga än någon annan. Men i och med att det är en identitet som ofta glöms bort så är det ännu viktigare att uppmärksamma den både under dagar som denna och under andra pride-sammanhang.
