With Professors Ruth Pison (adviser), Grace Concepcion, Pauline Mari Hernando, and Loujaye Sonido (panelists). As panel chair and critic, I was just too happy to endorse Francis Eduard Ang's MA Comparative Literature thesis entitled "Feeling Low Walls: Emotions and Socioeconomic Class in the Short Stories of Estrella Alfon."
Previous studies on Alfon's works have predominantly focused on feminist or formalist frameworks. However, Ang's investigation takes a new perspective by employing Sara Ahmed's theory of the sociality of emotions. Ang's study demonstrates how Alfon's narratives depict and manifest how emotions create boundaries between individuals from different social classes. Through exploring these stories, Ang highlights the points of contact that allow individuals to assess their class positions vis-à-vis others.
From Ang's vantage point, Alfon's men and women are subjects who experience emotions towards objects, thereby establishing a distinct boundary between subject and object. These emotions enable the issues to evaluate the socioeconomic class of these objects, ultimately comparing them to their social standing. Consequently, these stories (e.g., Magnificence, English, The Gentle Rain, Servant Girl, Anguish, Those who love us, Compostela, Man with a camera, Low Wall) reveal that emotions play a pivotal role in enabling individuals to differentiate themselves from those who do not share the same socioeconomic class.
Overall, Ang's thesis sheds light on the significance of emotions in exploring class distinctions within Alfon's fictional universe. By adopting a more comprehensive and nuanced approach, this study offers valuable insights into the intricate dynamics between emotions and socioeconomic class in comparative literary and cultural studies.
Congratulations 🥂

On Tuesday I was able to help present to the world the 24th volume of the mOthertongue journal, a multilingual journal my comparative Literature department produces. I had the honor of being the editor-in-chief and what an amazing experience that was. I was lucky to have the best editorial board and faculty advisor to help me and even one of my good friends contributing their own work. What an amazing project to end my college career with! — #mothertongue #othertongue #literaryjournal #multilingual #comparativeliterature #translation #editorinchief https://www.instagram.com/p/BwxNGrtHERr/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=lvqf65moyq7t

Yule, an Old English word meaning "heathen feast," is a 12-day midwinter celebration beginning on Christmas, December 25, and ending January 5. It was considered a time of rebirth. Each day within this period represented a secular or religious holiday or celebration. It was customary practice that sacrfices be performed and toasts be made with the intention to get drunk. Christmas trees, the yule log, and wreaths have always been traditional practice. The date, December 25, corresponds to the time marking the day of the shortest daylight and longest night of the year. It was first celebrated as Christmas in 336. During this time, it said that ghostly apparitions and supernatural beings were often seen. According to Old Norse, which was the religion practiced by the Germanic people, there is a pantheon of gods and goddesses they called Aesir and Vanir, respectively. One such god, Odin, a one-eyed and long bearded image, was often seen with his animal companions and familiars moving through the sky in a procession called the wild hunt, [The familiars were supernatural entities that would assist witches and cunning folk (white witches-practictioners of folk magic and divination) in their practice of magic.] is the Father of Yule, and also of war, poetry, and sorcery; and he originated the runes. He hung himself in order to secure knowledge of runes - a set of related alphabets, from the word run, meaning secret or whisper. The runes are attributed to bringing that which is dead back to life. 🔺🔸🔹 New blog post ✨link in bio ✨ I recently finished Rebecca Solnit's #TheFarawayNearby before reading #TheNearestFarawayPlace by Hayley Long and I didn't notice til much later the mirroring in their titles. The first is inspired by Georgia O'Keefe's letter sign off, the second by an instrumental Beach Boys track. Solnit writes, "Emotion has its geography, affection is what is nearby, within the boundaries of the self. You can be a thousand miles from the person next to you in bed or deeply invested in the survival of a stranger on the other side of the world." 🔻 Long's character Dylan says, "'As long as I'm in there,' I said, gently touching Griff's forehead, 'I'm always, always here. That's how close I am. It's not like getting on the train and going to Shrewsbury or Birmingham or anything. You only have to think about me to cover the distance.'" 🔹 these are two entirely different books for entirely different demographics but they're speaking to the same themes- so I'm feeling pretty smug I'm adult who reads both young adult fiction and literary memoir 📖go readee full blog post if you fancy link in bio ok byeeeeee 👋🏻 ✨ #bookblog #bookreview #rebeccasolnit #hayleylong #hotkeybooks @hotkeybooks @grantabooks #memoir #yafiction #ireadya #youngadultbooks #bookstagram #igreads #bookblogger #comparativeliterature http://ift.tt/2wgDgUS

The UC Berkeley Comparative Literature Undergraduate Research Symposium 2017 committee is currently accepting proposals for its 6th annual conference. The conference will take place on April 1st, 2017 on the UC Berkeley campus and will serve as a forum for undergraduate students of comparative literature and related fields to present and discuss their own research among peers, graduate students, professors, and the Berkeley community. Attending and presenting at the conference is an excellent way to learn about current trends in literary research and to meet current undergraduates, graduate students, and professors in Comparative Literature -- especially if you are considering pursuing further research and study in the field of Comparative Literature.
In order to be considered, applicants must submit an abstract (200-400 words) detailing their research by February 17, 2017 at midnight Pacific Time. Please click on this link to submit your abstract: https://docs.google.com/…/1FAIpQLSea8TujEeirie04Ia…/viewform.
Please see the LINK below to read about this year's theme and guidelines for presentations. https://docs.google.com/…/1zqKqzna5DZkWrQ4sQU91RbNzG80…/edit

Last essay ✔️. I hate turning papers in because I never actually feel confident in what I write- I kind of just slap arguments on a page and hope they all connect. I can also never tell if I'm actually satisfied with what I write or if I'm just happy it's written and stopped caring about quality. I think I'll miss literature classes though, since this is probably the last one I'll ever take in an academic setting. I'm glad I ended with such an amazing professor and with a topic as interesting as the Baroque period. One more open book final on Thursday, a few little administrative things, and I'm done. ✌️ out University it's too hot here anyway.
