AI models can seemingly do it all: generate songs, photos, stories, and pictures of what your dog would look like as a medieval monarch. 
But all of that data and imagery is pulled from real humans — writers, artists, illustrators, photographers, and more — who have had their work compressed and funneled into the training minds of AI without compensation. 
Kelly McKernan is one of those artists. In 2023, they discovered that Midjourney, an AI image generation tool, had used their unique artistic style to create over twelve thousand images. 
“It was starting to look pretty accurate, a little infringe-y,” they told The New Yorker last year. “I can see my hand in this stuff, see how my work was analyzed and mixed up with some others’ to produce these images.” 
For years, leading AI companies like Midjourney and OpenAI, have enjoyed seemingly unfettered regulation, but a landmark court case could change that. 
On May 9, a California federal judge allowed ten artists to move forward with their allegations against Stability AI, Runway, DeviantArt, and Midjourney. This includes proceeding with discovery, which means the AI companies will be asked to turn over internal documents for review and allow witness examination. 
Lawyer-turned-content-creator Nate Hake took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to celebrate the milestone, saying that “discovery could help open the floodgates.” 
“This is absolutely huge because so far the legal playbook by the GenAI companies has been to hide what their models were trained on,” Hake explained...
“I’m so grateful for these women and our lawyers,” McKernan posted on X, above a picture of them embracing Ortiz and Andersen. “We’re making history together as the largest copyright lawsuit in history moves forward.” ...
The case is one of many AI copyright theft cases brought forward in the last year, but no other case has gotten this far into litigation. 
“I think having us artist plaintiffs visible in court was important,” McKernan wrote. “We’re the human creators fighting a Goliath of exploitative tech.”
“There are REAL people suffering the consequences of unethically built generative AI. We demand accountability, artist protections, and regulation.”

Why does your art look so crunchy / compressed? Glaze
How did you learn pixel art? I first started out watching MortMort and making tiny sprites. Then once I started getting interested in landscapes/environment art, I did many, many Studio Ghibli studies.
How can I also protect my art? You can use Glaze and Nightshade- Glaze protects against Img2Img style copying, and Nightshade poisons the data so the AI thinks it's the opposite of what it actually is. There is a lot of misinformation going around (likely from pro-AI groups) so do your own research too! If you're a pixel artist you can also tilt or blur your art after upscaling, which will make it near useless to AI models (or regular thieves) once downscaled again.

AI DISTURBANCE "OVERLAYS" DO NOT WORK!
To all the artists and folks who want to protect their art against AI mimicry: all the "AI disturbance" overlays that are circulating online lately DON'T WORK!

Glaze's disturbance (and now the Ibis Paint premium feature, apparently. Not sure.) modifies the image on a code-level, it's not just an overlayed effect but it actually affects the image's data so AI can't really detect and interpret the code within the image. From the Glaze website:
Can't you just apply some filter, compression, blurring, or add some noise to the image to destroy image cloaks? As counterintuitive as this may be, the high level answer is that no simple tools work to destroy the perturbation of these image cloaks. To make sense of this, it helps to first understand that cloaking does not use high-intensity pixels, or rely on bright patterns to distort the image. It is a precisely computed combination of a number of pixels that do not easily stand out to the human eye, but can produce distortion in the AI's “eye.” In our work, we have performed extensive tests showing how robust cloaking is to things like image compression and distortion/noise/masking injection. Another way to think about this is that the cloak is not some brittle watermark that is either seen or not seen. It is a transformation of the image in a dimension that humans do not perceive, but very much in the dimensions that the deep learning model perceive these images. So transformations that rotate, blur, change resolution, crop, etc, do not affect the cloak, just like the same way those operations would not change your perception of what makes a Van Gogh painting "Van Gogh."

Tell a woman she is immoral when she does what little girls naturally do with their hips before some adult tells them that they are wrong or sinful.
Call a teen a “slut” when she plants her feet, sticks out her buttocks, protrudes her mouth, arches her spine, and shakes her thighs, and as a result, she will grow into a woman who births generations of fibroids, painful periods, pelvic prolapse, pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, low libido, flattened vulva mounds, perineum tension, dehydrated vagin@l tissues, and more.
Tell a woman to sit down tightly compressed in western chairs and she will think that sitting with her legs splayed open on the ground, on a yoga block, or in an African/Asian poof chair (hard chair without a back) and doing nothing but feeling is boring. She will lay around on plushy sofas and forever complain about back pain becuase she has not naturally built her back, belly, or pelvic muscles due to following western models on how to live, how to sit, how to breathe, and how to….
So many women live lives that were born from the imagination of the colonial mind…still to this day and it is hurting us in many ways. I have quietly mentored over 100 women over the last 15 years and I can honestly say that most women’s issues orient from the same/similar root system - western life, western external systems, western mind, and western ways of operating.🫀
So here I am doing life differently. I have been doing like life differently over 20 years.
What I discovered in doing life differently, in rejecting nearly everything taught to me about nearly everything and going on a journey to get to know myself (my cells) was…new information. With the audacity to be different arrived the capacity to be an unbiased, non-judgmental guide and support to women & non-binary females.
I am near 50 years old and living in the evidence. No filters or AI, just warm sun.
What women don’t understand is that our maiden energy never goes away, even in our mothering and crone years, but ONLY when we feel delicious in our tissues.
The work is to remember your wild. Your significant, concentrated, high power, earth-shaking, nutrient-dense, increased intelligence and profound bliss. Because new earth can not be birthed from a colonised body. So surrender to the vast unapologetic dream birthed from having cultivated a relationship to the universe and its creation from within your magical starry-eyed body. Not merely intellectualizing the universe, not googling it, but becoming it.

I mostly try to ignore AI art debates, and as a result I feel like I don't have enough context to make sense of that twitter exchange. That said...
It's about generative image models, and whether they "are compression." Which seems to mean something like "whether they contain compressed representations of their training images."
I can see two reasons why partisans in the AI art wars might care about this question:
If a training image is actually "written down" inside the model, in some compressed form that can be "read off" of the weights, it would then be easier to argue that a copyright on the image applies to the model weights themselves. Or to make similar claims about art theft, etc. that aren't about copyright per se.
If the model "merely" consists of a bunch of compressed images, together with some comparatively simple procedure for mixing/combining their elements together (so that most of the complexity is in the images, not the "combining procedure"), this would support the contention that the model is not "creative," is not "intelligent," is "merely copying art by humans," etc.
I think the stronger claim in #2 is clearly false, and this in turn has implications for #1.
(For simplicity I'll just use "#2", below, as a shorthand for "the stronger claim in #2," i.e. the thing about compressed images + simple combination procedure)
I can't present, or even summarize, the full range of the evidence against #2 in this brief post. There's simply too much of it. Virtually everything we know about neural networks militates against #2, in one way or another.
The whole of NN interpretability conflicts with #2. When we actually look at the internals of neural nets and what is being "represented" there, we rarely find anything that is specialized to a single training example, like a single image. We find things that are more generally applicable, across many different images: representations that mean "there's a curved line here" or "there's a floppy ear here" or "there's a dog's head here."
The linked post is about an image classifier (and a relatively primitive one), not an image generator, but we've also found similar things inside of generative models (e.g.).
I also find it difficult to understand how anyone could seriously believe #2 after actually using these models for any significant span of time, in any nontrivial way. The experience is just... not anything like what you would expect, if you thought they were "pasting together" elements from specific artworks in some simplistic, collage-like way. You can ask them for wild conjunctions of many different elements and styles, which have definitely never been represented before in any image, and the resulting synthesis will happen at a very high, humanlike level of abstraction.
And it is noteworthy that, even in the most damning cases where a model reliably generates images that are highly similar to some obviously copyrighted ones, it doesn't actually produce exact duplicates of those images. The linked article includes many pairs of the form (copyrighted image, MidJourney generation), but the generations are vastly different from the copyrighted images on the pixel level -- they just feel "basically the same" to us, because they have the same content in terms of humanlike abstract concepts, differing only in "inessential minor details."
If the model worked by memorizing a bunch of images and then recombining elements of them, it should be easy for it to very precisely reproduce just one of the memorized images, as a special case. Whereas it would presumably be difficult for such a system to produce something "essentially the same as" a single memorized image, but differing slightly in the inessential details -- what kind of "mixture," with some other image(s), would produce this effect?
Yet it's the latter that we see in practice -- as we'd expect from a generator that works in humanlike abstractions.
And this, in turn, helps us understand what's going in in the twitter dispute about "it's either compression or magic" vs. "how could you compress so much down to so few GB?"
Say you want to make a computer display some particular picture. Of, I dunno, a bird. (The important thing is that it's a specific picture, the kind that could be copyrighted.)
The simplest way to do this is just to have the computer store the image as a bitmap of pixels, without any compression.
In this case, it's unambiguous that the image itself is being represented in the computer, with all the attendant copyright (etc.) implications. It's right there. You can read it off, pixel by pixel.
But maybe this takes up too much computer memory. So you try using a simple form of compression, like JPEG compression.
JPEG compression is pretty simple. It doesn't "know" much about what images tend to look like in practice; effectively, it just "knows" that they tend to be sort of "smooth" at the small scale, so that one tiny region often has similar colors/intensities to neighboring tiny regions.
Just knowing this one simple fact gets you a significant reduction in file size, though. (The size of this reduction is a typical reference point for people's intuitions about what "compression" can, and can't, do.)
And here, again, it's relatively clear that the image is represented in the computer. You have to do some work to "unpack" it, but it's simple work, using an algorithm simple enough that a human can hold the whole thing in their mind at once. (There is probably at least one person in existence, I imagine, who can visualize what the encoded image looks like when they look at the raw bytes of a JPEG file, like those guys in The Matrix watching the green text fall across their terminal screens.)
But now, what if you had a system that had a whole elaborate library of general visual concepts, and could ably draw these concepts if asked, and could draw them in any combination?
You no longer need to lay out anything like a bitmap, a "copy" of the image arranged in space, tile by tile, color/intensity unit by color/intensity unit.
It's a bird? Great, the system knows what birds look like. This particular bird is an oriole? The system knows orioles. It's in profile? The system knows the general concept of "human or animal seen in profile," and how to apply it to an oriole.
Your encoding of the image, thus far, is a noting-down of these concepts. It takes very little space, just a few bits of information: "Oriole? YES. In profile? YES."
The picture is a close-up photograph? One more bit. Under bright, more-white-than-yellow light? One more bit. There's shallow depth of field, and the background is mostly a bright green blur, some indistinct mass of vegetation? Zero bits: the system's already guessed all that, from what images of this sort tend to be like. (You'd have to spend bits to get anything except the green blur.)
Eventually, we come to the less essential details -- all the things that make your image really this one specific image, and not any of the other close-up shots of orioles that exist in the world. The exact way the head is tilted. The way the branch, that it sits on, is slightly bent at its tip.
This is where most of the bits are spent. You have to spend bits to get all of these details right, and the more "arbitrary" the details are -- the less easy they are to guess, on the basis of everything else -- the more bits you have to spend on them.
But, because your first and most abstract bits bought you so much, you can express your image quite precisely, and still use far less room than JPEG compression would use, or any other algorithm that comes to mind when people say the word "compression."
It is easy to "compress" many specific images inside a system that understands general visual concepts, because most of the content of an image is generic, not unique to that image alone.
The ability to convey all of the non-unique content very briefly is precisely what provides us enough room to write down all the unique content, alongside it.
This is basically the way in which specific images are "represented" inside Stable Diffusion and MidJourney and the like, insofar as they are. Which they are, not as a general rule, but occasionally, in the case of certain specific images -- due to their ubiquity in the real world and hence in the training data, or due to some deliberate over-sampling of them in that data.
(In the case of MidJourney and the copyrighted images, I suspect the model was [over-?]heavily trained on those specific images -- perhaps because they were thought to exemplify the "epic," cinematic MidJourney house style -- and it has thus stored more of their less-essential details than it has with most training images. Typical regurgitations from image generators are less precise than those examples, more "abstract" in their resemblance to the originals -- just the easy, early bits, with fewer of the expensive less-essential details.)
But now -- is your image of the oriole "represented" in computer memory, in this last case? Is the system "compressing" it, "storing" it in a way that can be "read off"?
In some sense, yes. In some sense, no.
This is a philosophical question, really, about what makes your image itself, and not any of the other images of orioles in profile against blurred green backgrounds.
Remember that even MidJourney can't reproduce those copyrighted images exactly. It just makes images that are "basically the same."
Whatever is "stored" there is not, actually, a copy of each copyrighted image. It's something else, something that isn't the original, but which we deem too close to the original for our comfort. Something of which we say: "it's different, yes, but only in the inessential details."
But what, exactly, counts as an "inessential detail"? How specific is too specific? How precise is too precise?
If the oriole is positioned just a bit differently on the branch... if there is a splash of pink amid the green blur, a flower, in the original but not the copy, or vice versa...
When does it stop being a copy of your image, and start being merely an image that shares a lot in common with yours? It is not obvious where to draw the line. "Details" seem to span a whole continuous range of general-to-specific, with no obvious cutoff point.
And if we could, somehow, strip out all memory of all the "sufficiently specific details" from one of these models -- which might be an interesting research direction! -- so that what remains is only the model's capacity to depict "abstract concepts" in conjunction?
If we could? It's not clear how far that would get us, actually.
If you can draw a man with all of Super Mario's abstract attributes, then you can draw Super Mario. (And if you cannot, then you are missing some important concept or concepts about people and pictures, and this will hinder you in your attempts to draw other, non-copyrighted entities.)
If you can draw an oriole, in profile, and a branch, and a green blur, then you can draw an oriole in profile on a branch against a green blur. And all the finer details? If one wants them, the right prompt should produce them.
There is no way to stop a sufficiently capable artist from imitating what you have done, if it can imitate all of the elements of which your creation is made, in any imaginable combination.

just letting you know that that ask you rb'd about glaze being a scam seems to be false/dubious. I think they're just misinterpreting "not as useful as we had hoped" and interpreted it maliciously, based on the replies?
not positive but yeah!
Ah yeah, I see people fairly expressing that being “debunked” as in, not a scam; I wasn’t personally particularly aligned to whether or not its “dubious origins” are true or not… so sorry about that.
From what I’ve read, I was more focused upon the consensus that it doesn’t work, and therefore isn’t worth the effort. So having a positive takeaway on glaze outside of its “scam or not status”, as potentially saving us from ai learning doesn’t seem useful to pass around.
Correct me if there’s better information out there but this from an old Reddit post a year back is why I didn’t continue looking into it as it made sense to my layman’s brain:
“lets briefly go over the idea behind GLAZE
computer vision doesn't work the same way as in the brain. They way we do this in computer vision is that we hook a bunch of matrix multiplications together to transform the input into some kind of output (very simplified). One of the consequences of this approach is that small changes over the entire input image can lead to large changes to the output.
It's this effect that GLAZE aims to use as an attack vector / defense mechanism. More specifically, GLAZE sets some kind of budget on how much it is allowed to change the input, and within that budget it then tries to find a change such that the embeddings created by the VAE that sits in front of the diffusion model look like embeddings of an image that come from a different style.
Okay, but how do we know what to change to make it look like a different style? for that they take the original image and use the img2img capabilities of SD itself to transform that image into something of another style. then we can compare the embeddings of both versions and try and alter the original image such that it's embeddings start looking like that of the style transferred version.
So what's wrong with it?
In order for GLAZE to be successful the perturbation it finds (the funny looking swirly pattern) has to be reasonably resistant against transformations. What the authors of GLAZE have tested against is jpeg compression, and adding Gaussian noise, and they found that jpeg compression was largely ineffective and adding Gaussian noise would degrade the artwork quicker than it would degrade the transfer effect of GLAZE. But that's a very limited set of attacks you can test against. It is not scale invariant, something that people making lora's usually do. e.g. they don't train on the 4K version of the image, at most on something that's around 720x720 or something. As per authors admission it might also not be crop invariant. There also seem to be denoising approaches that sufficiently destroy the pattern (the 16 lines of code).
As you've already noticed, GLAZING something can results in rather noticeable swirly patterns. This pattern becomes especially visible when you look at works that consist of a lot of flat shading or smooth gradients. This is not just a problem for the artist/viewer, this is also a fundamental problem for glaze. How the original image is supposed to look like is rather obvious in these cases, so you can fairly aggressively denoise without much loss of quality (might even end up looking better without all the patterns).
Some additional problems that GLAZE might run into: it very specifically targets the original VAE that comes with SD. The authors claim that their approach transfers well enough between some of the different VAEs you can find out in the wild, and that at least they were unsuccessful in training a good VAE that could resist their attack. But their reporting on these findings isn't very rigorous and lacks quite a bit of detail.
will it get better with updates?
Some artists belief that this is essentially a cat and mouse game and that GLAZE will simply need updates to make it better. This is a very optimistic and uninformed opinion made by people that lack the knowledge to make such claims. Some of the shortcomings outlined above aren't due to implementation details, but are much more intimately related with the techniques/math used to achieve these results. Even if this indeed was a cat and mouse game, you'll run into the issue that the artist is always the one that has to make the first move, and the adversary can save past attempt of the artists now broken work.
GLAZE is an interesting academic paper, but it's not going to be a part of the solution artists are looking for.”

Non si sa ancora il motivo dell’omicidio di Brian Thompson, l’AD della United Health Care, freddato a Manhattan, ma la reazione delle moltitudini che sui social hanno celebrato l’omicidio rivela comunque la verità che, in cuor loro, milioni di Americani hanno sognato una vendetta simile.
Di tutte le anonime e inappellabili forze che governano la vita quotidiana degli Americani, la sanità commerciale è quella che infligge costanti tormenti e sofferenze e le ingiustizie più crudeli ai cittadini inermi. In particolare, lo sono le assicurazioni mediche, un settore industriale da 4000 miliardi l’anno il cui business model consiste nel riscuotere esosi premi da clienti-ostaggio e successivamente minimizzare i servizi erogati traendo dalla differenza utili da capogiro (Per la United, $371 miliardi nel 2023).
Negli Stati uniti la sanità è del tutto asservita sul mercato privato, controllato da Big Pharma e Big Insurance (cui è del tutto assoggettata la professione medica). Il risultato è la colossale inefficienza di un sistema che deve tener conto di quei profitti (in USA la spesa sanitaria procapite ammonta a più di $12000 – il doppio dei $6000 di altri paesi industrializzati) a fronte di risultati e. aspettativa di vita inferiori. Il catalogo delle vessazioni ed angherie inflitte ai “clienti” per massimizzare i guadagni è praticamente un genere letterario a se.
Poco dopo essermi traferito in California, da studente, ho contratto una meningite virale. Recatomi al locale pronto soccorso, un esame ha confermato la diagnosi e il medico mi ha detto che, data la gravità, si imponeva un ricovero immediato. All’apprendere che non ero assicurato, però mi ha comunicato che non c’era nulla che potesse fare per me e mi ha dimesso con un paio di compresse analgesiche (12 ore dopo ero sotto tenda a ossigeno in un ospedale statale, tenuto per legge a somministrare cure.) La lezione sulla locale concezione sanitaria, si è completata con le bollette da molte migliaia di dollari arrivate in seguito (con minacce di pignoramento), non solo dall’ospedale curante, ma da quello che mi aveva messo alla porta.
Una goccia nel mare u in un mare di malasanità governata da algoritmi aziendali e anonimi funzionari col mandato di negare i benefici promessi dai contratti assicurativi. Chiedete ad una Americano per strada e saprà snocciolare una litania di aneddoti horror. Partorienti dimesse il giorno della nascita per carenza di assicurazione. Decine di migliaia di dollari fatturati per visite al pronto soccorso. Cure negate perché procedure essenziali vengono dichiarate “elettive” dagli assicuratori o “eccessive” (compreso, in caso di anziani, perché “è stata già raggiunta la logica aspettativa di vita”). Ogni anno 650000 americani dichiarano bancarotta per spese mediche. Solo questa settimana ha fatto notizia l’annuncio del colosso assicurativo Anthem: avrebbe continuato a rimborsare le anestesie chirurgiche ma “per un numero limitato di minuti.”
In questo quadro fa ridere l’idea che gli immigrati vengano in America “per approfittare della sanità pubblica.” Sono giustificati semmai gli avvertimenti dei consolati che consigliano ai turisti di premunirsi prima di visitare un paese dove un osso ingessato ti può rimandare a casa con debiti per decine di migliaia di dollari.
È il mercato bellezza. Se non vuoi perdere alla roulette non entrare nel casinò.
Non c’è da sorprendersi allora che alla notizia dell’omicidio, così tanti Americani abbiano avuto lo stesso pensiero, maturato in anni di paura e disgusto e notti in bianco passate a pensare come poteri permettersi d salvare la pelle mentre gli assicuratori brindavano.
Quando è stato ucciso Thompson si apprestava a brindare con gli azionisti un altro trimestre di stratosferici fatturati sulla pelle degli “assistiti.”
Al di là dei motivi che potranno venire acclarati, il gesto violento di Manhattan ha immediatamente assunto riflessi di lotta di classe - o delle forme patologiche che ne hanno preso il posto nella distopia ballardiana in cui viviamo. So, this specifically stemmed from my au with @polaris-stuff and @dragoncxv360 called Reset. We named the original computer AIs Ilo and Milo, and then cutely killed Milo off with old Moon. Technically, KC named them that, based off a game that Moon let him play that helped calm him down.
First off, the idea that KC could have a relationship with Moon’s computer isn’t too far-fetched—after all, KC's AI was housed in it at one point. What if there’s a mindscape within the computer where KC and the AI could interact? They get to know each other pretty well, so to speak. When KC finally gets his body, he’s still threading his claws through the computer’s hardware, just because old habits die hard. Suddenly, computer repairs become a lot more flustering.
Killcode doesn't just ditch either once he has his own body. It's not an ideal body, first off, just a spare moon model and he's not entirely comfortable in it. Second off, he's trying to figure out where exactly he belongs now that Moon has been reset, and he's got his own body, and this new Moon doesn't really. . . know him. Or his. . . particular needs. Several awkward conversations lie in wait, and the only person that KC can really rely on is the computer. He doesn't know what to do with himself, so he kind of hangs out until Ruin arrives on scene, and more or less forces everyone to shoo via blowing up the daycare.
Ruin resets the computer during that time and for the moment, bye-bye Ilo. Everything is explained once everyone is on neutral terms, but that takes a while to get to. Killcode ends up splitting off from the celestials during this time after securing a new body, and tries to make his own life. And he does do that, and shit works out for a while. And then the main plot of the AU happens, and Ruin's been outed, and shit is gone mad, and once things calm down KC confronts Ruin about deleting his computer husband.
They manage to restore both Ilo and Milo, and since there's already an AI in the computer, they transfer them to nanobodies for the time being. And Killcode helps them learn about the real world, and experience new things, and Milo is skittish as fuck, but Ilo is there to support him and encourage them, and then end up joining the poly that's happening over on KC's side of things after an adjustment period. Ilo was estatic to be able to be held by KC, Milo was. . . much less trusting. But alls well that ends well!
Also, this is severely compressed and summarized. I could rant for hours about them (and I will. When we write the book. Hehe.)

loss vs reward & what it means for interpretation of language models
this is a point that i believe is well known in the ai nerd milieu but I'm not sure it's filtered out more widely.
reinforcement learning is now a large part of training language models. this is an old and highly finicky technique, and in previous AI summers it seemed to hit severe limits, but it's come back in a big way. i feel like that has implications.
training on prediction loss is training to find the probability of the next token in the training set. given a long string, there are a just a few 'correct' continuations the model must predict. since the model must build a compressed representation to interpolate sparse data, this can get you a really long way with building useful abstractions that allow more complex language dynamics, but what the model is 'learning' is to reproduce the data as accurately as possible; in that sense it is indeed a stochastic parrot.
but posttraining with reinforcement learning changes the interpretation of logits (jargon: the output probabilities assigned to each possible next token). now, it's not about finding the most likely token in the interpolated training set, but finding the token that's most likely to be best by some criterion (e.g. does this give a correct answer, will the model of human preference like this). it's a more abstract goal, and it's also less black and white. instead of one correct next token which should get a high probability, there is a gradation of possible scores for the model's entire answer.
reinforcement learning works when the problem is sometimes but not always solvable by a model. when it is hard but not too hard. so the job of pretraining is to give the model just enough structure that reinforcement learning can be effective.
the model is thus learning which of the many patterns within language that it has discovered to bring online for a given input, in order to satisfy the reward model. (behaviours that get higher scores from the reward model become more likely.) but it's also still learning to further abstract those patterns and change its internal representation to better reflect the tasks.
at this point it's moving away from "simply" predicting training data, but doing something more complex.
analogies with humans are left as an exercise for the reader.

So why is Proteus Ridley called that, other than to differentiate his Samus Returns cybernetics from the ones in Prime and Corruption? Why that name specifically: Proteus?
The problem with the Meta frame is that while it did allow Ridley to perform on the field, the cybernetics themselves restricted his regeneration; A limb cannot regrow in space taken up by a machine. In order to continue regenerating from his injuries, Ridley would need to go through a whole process to remove them, place himself into an amniotic vat, and then reapply them, all between missions. Likewise, cybernetic limbs would have to be shortened to adjust to regenerated stumps and gaps.
To get around this, Mecha Ridley was created; A mechanical doppelganger for Ridley to remotely pilot as he regenerated his body. But even this solution was flawed, as Ridley was still vulnerable in his recovering state, and if the connection between his neural headset and Mecha Ridley were to be severed, it would have to rely on its built-in AI to take over; This was something Ridley deeply resented, finding his Mecha to be even more restricting and clumsy to use, and not respecting an AI's capabilities.
In response to very angry criticisms and feedback, science team finally devised a solution that would enable Ridley to recover 24/7, while simultaneously being ready to fight in-person 24/7; The best of both worlds! They devised the Proteus frame, named after a fluid, shape-shifting deity from human mythology.
Per its name, the Proteus cybernetics could affix themselves to Ridley's body to fill in the missing gaps; But at the same time, their fluid, shifting nature allowed the prosthetics to gradually recede and make room for Ridley's regenerating tissue as he wore the Proteus frame.
The Proteus frame still slowed down Ridley's healing, but it did not actively halt it as the Meta frame did. And because he was still healing while wearing the Proteus, it meant Ridley could get away with, and ultimately would have to insist upon, wearing the Proteus at all times in order to avoid being in a vulnerable state without his prosthetics.
Of course, where does the mass go? In order to gradually clear space for Ridley's body as it rebuilds itself, the mechanical mass has to go somewhere. The Proteus cybernetics compress themselves, becoming more armored in the process; Although this does make Ridley heavier. To get around this, he can shed Proteus plating, which will then be stored away. When Ridley fully recovers, he will remove any remaining Proteus cybernetics, and they will be reconnected with the removed plating for future use.

In other words: This is why the artwork for Proteus Ridley shows him being more cybernetic than the actual in-game model. The artwork depicts Ridley when he first put on the Proteus armor; The in-game model is some time afterwards, when he's regenerated other parts of his body, and the Proteus components have either receded into the others remaining, or been stored with prosthetics for other body parts to be reapplied in case of another catastrophic injury. Ridley would never get that opportunity, due to finally dying for real in Super Metroid.

How to use Nightshade to Protect Your Art
Nightshade is a program that is relatively easy to use. You can search for it using the search term "glaze nightshade."
You WILL have to download popular image models so Nightshade recognizes what your art is and is able to poison it. This is done automatically the first time you run the program.
I have done extensive research into this, and have even talked Sean Shan of University of Chicago and have been assured that YOUR data is NOT being retained. This is a case of using AI to fight against itself. At this point, it is the best option to prevent your art and photography from being scraped.
Even though this program presents no danger to end users, you should be informed of this.
After everything is downloaded, you should select an image you wish to "Shade."
Once you select your image, Nightshade will pick a tag that it believes covers what's in the image. Sometimes this tag is wrong or not useful. (For example, I loaded a drawing of Brian May into the program, and it tagged it "woman." I changed it to "man.") The tag must be one word, and should be relatively general.
Images with less detail should have less poisoning applied. For my art, I use the default setting. While this does cause noticeable artifacts, it is not so much that it distorts the image. It just looks like a compressed jpg.
You will also need to choose the render quality. I usually choose the highest setting, which is the slowest, and takes about 20 minutes. It's worth it.
Then, choose a spot to save the image. It will save as the original file name with data appended. I generally delete this appended info from the new file before I post it.
When you do post it on social media, your alt text should contain the tag you used when you created it. For example, I posted a skull and put "A hyena skull in greyscale" in the alt text. This ensures that language models will pick up the art as "skull" and this will contribute to poisoning the skull dataset.
If you are posting the image on your own website, you should make sure to add the tag to the metadata of your image.
Then you post it!
Again, if you have any art that you want to run through Nightshade, please contact me and I'll gladly do it for you. There will be a web version of nightshade eventually, which will make the process much easier. But for now, don't be afraid to rely on people whose GPUs can handle it!
