#computer of doom

There is a mysterious computer in one of the planetarium offices. When I found it, it was underneath a computer desk (normal). It did not have a plug (weird). It had a monitor on the computer desk and a keyboard (normal). They could not be plugged in to the computer (weird). It turns on, and I went looking for a monitor cable that would fit because the planetarium has a big bucket of monitor cables stored behind the dome. It seems to use some variation of a VGA cable; exact species could not be determined, and a cable that was the correct gender could not be found. (weird.) The computer seems to have been custom built and has a 2TB hard drive visible. I cannot discern its purpose.

My working theories are:

It ran the previous planetarium software prior to its current system.

It has something to do with the laser shows.

It's the backup drive for... something.

It has a label that says "PREFLIGHT"; this implies it was stolen off an aircraft somehow.

It's alien technology that, based on its bizarre assortment of ports, got punted out of an alternate reality.

Open to suggestions with how to deal with the thing.

I now have 2 computers based on 486 processor and what's interesting is that they are at opposite ends of the 486 line up. On the left, a 486DX25 from 1989. The second is a 486DX4-100 from 1994, a high end version before the complete switch to Pentium. They are perfect for enjoying DOS games from the first half of the 90s before the release of Windows 95

The game I've been working on for almost two years is now in open beta if you wanna try it out!!

Boom Boom Hamster Doom is a VR game about commanding teams of hamsters fighting across a completely destructible island. If you want an X-meets-Y description, it's much like Worms, but at tabletop scale. It's toyetic as hell - you lead them around on leashes with your little crab claw, and pull back like a catapult to aim missiles or boxing gloves, throw an airstrike like a paper plane, or fly them around in little jetpacks.

I've worked on pretty much every corner of this game - in particular, shading, animation, UI, gameplay and the procedural generation of the islands. And like, you know me, I want to tell you all about it. I'm writing a whole lot more diving into how just about every aspect of the game was built, from voxel meshing and networked physics to ocean rendering, bot AI, and obscure DOTS optimisation headaches... which will all be appearing right here. I'll keep you updated.

We'll be moving into full early-access soon, but you can already jump in the beta here, and play against other people or bots in the forest and ice biomes. You'll need to have a Quest 2 or Quest 3 headset - but if you have another headset, don't worry, we are planning on a Steam release down the line. I'll keep you posted.

All feedback is extremely welcome! I'm nervous/proud/excited for the game to finally see the light of day.

the thing that often gets me about photographer tim (among many things, tho i will note for the record i do enjoy the concept of a tim who sneaks out of the downtown condo to go watch a crime scene nearby with the rest of the rubberneckers and tries to see if he can catch a glimpse of bruce and dick and maybe try and snap a pic if he does) is that often photography, something tim canonically doesn't show any particular interest, is transformed into this hobby he absolutely adores above all else and it's like. man. where's his sherlock holmes society membership. why can't he join the batfam early when he meets dick at the local sherlock holmes book club at the library. where are any of his actual interests here.

sorry to barge in but i saw your tags on the doomguy post… he was cranking his shit on the job? canonically?

Yeah I can't seem to find it online, but in the original doom game pamphlet it mentions 2 canonical facts about him - that he was dishonorably dishonorably discharged after putting his CO in a fullbody cast for ordering him to fire on unarmed civilians, and all he did while working as a security guard was watch porn. If i could dig it up online i would but all I can seem to find is the mention of him bodying his CO.
