It’s one of the many times I’ve been to N.O. but this trip was only to take in the jazz scene. “Code Noir” was implemented in the Louisiana Territories to basically give slaves a day off (imagine that smh). So Congo Square in New Orleans is where the slaves gathered on Sundays to sell goods, dance, sing etc. Over time this evolved and gave birth to jazz. Congo Square in New Orleans. The only place during slavery times where slaves could meet up on Sundays and be free. Inside Congo square is a sacred ancestor tree. Please come share in this event, produced by the community. What is really important is that black spiritual leaders and elders have stepped up to create this vital and timely event.

The committee members working on the event are almost entirely black and have put tremendous energy, research, passion, experience, leadership, and wisdom into their efforts. New Orleans National Vodou Day centers on Black elders and leaders. The event relates to slavery and the Vodou religion that helped enslaved people endure the unendurable.

This is the history of horrors committed upon the black community, their phenomenal resilience, and the spiritual tradition that brings healing, so their leadership here is of utmost importance and their extraordinary and heart-felt efforts should be acknowledged and recognized.

The Inaugural New Orleans National Vodou Day - January 14th, 2023 New Orleans, Louisiana, USA 🇺🇸✊🏿🇧🇯 at 10 AM at the Transatlantic Slave Trade to Louisiana Marker on the Moon Walk at the River behind Jackson Square.   Bring your Offering for The Ancestors and Meet Me at the Tree in Congo Square at Noon before the Papa Legba ritual!
