tbh it's still crazy 2 see progressive (ie western slash european & american i guess? yanno wat i mean. places wher we r nawt radicalised & illegalised into it oblivion) audiences have such (understandably) high standards 4 queer media or even queer representation as a whole & won't take less than. like i understand it's cause ya can expect better so ya will, in sum cases ya can even demand better. but it's simply nawt an option 4 many of us.

like idk perhaps a bit too harsh of me 2 say but regardless of the political atmosphere there's still a difference between livin' in a place where ya still have rights, have pride & can walk into a store etc & find queer literature & rep & even merch, have resources 2 support yrself & find yr community. & a place where as much as wavin' a pride flag or even havin' a pride pin, OR G-D FORBID holdin' yer partner's hand WILL get ya arrested & jailed. an' yr lucky if ya don' get assaulted or killed be4 dat can happen 🫥

didn't think i'd have to spell this one out but "there is more to ricky's character than his disability" and "ricky being disabled is incredibly important to the plot and erasing it is not only ableist but negatively impacts his character development" are statements that can and DO coexist. nobody is defining ricky by his disability alone, but it was still part of him - a pretty big part of him, which a lot of people felt represented by - and erasing it does a lot more harm than good.

i saw someone say that "at least now we won't get any more able bodied actors as ricky", and... yes, but we also won't get any more disabled actors as ricky. we've had, what, one (yannick)? it's hard enough getting roles when you're disabled without writers removing disabled rep from their productions - ricky has been portrayed as disabled for years and should, if these people were to practice what they preach about listening to disabled people ("i'm the same person i've always been, it's just nobody listened to me when i was alive" hmm), be a character for disabled people, to put disabled people on stages and on camera, where we can't be ignored.

this isn't the first time this has happened and it likely won't be the last. that doesn't make it any less outrageous. that doesn't make our anger any less righteous.

i always wondered how noelle received psych treatment bc the overruling instinct to curl in on herself / suppress herself out of disgust for herself / take up as little space as possible in any given situation (even when she is actively working towards recovery + has a rudimentary desire to live) is a core facet of her character so it is hard to envision her reaching out for help out of her own volition .. but looking back i think a lot of the attitude / language / framing around echidna (as an extended metaphor for her eating disorder) recalls involuntary hospitalisation .. not only echidna being forced her onto her (as a burden in need of remedy + an entity that when cannot be remedied can only become an issue the public is under duty to wrangle / eliminate) but like .. the cure to her predicament becoming the focus + priority over her actual wellbeing .. being placated + isolated as “necessity” + treated w tongs + regarded not as the person but simply as the problem
