Rook (Corvus frugilegus) 

Rooks gather in large colonies which are known as 'Rookeries'. Like other corvids, they are extremely intelligent, with complex behaviour and problem-solving capabilities. They are omnivorous feeders, with about 60% of their diet being vegetable matter, and the remainder being of animal origin. A group of Rooks together is known as a parliament.

Hear Me Out: Rook as Tim Drake’s new codename

Tim Drake (Robin, Red Robin, & Drake) needs his own codename and prefferably one he won’t share with a burger restuarant...or Batman’s biological son.

The rook is a piece in the game of chess. It may move any number of squares horizontally or vertically without jumping, and it may capture an enemy piece on its path; additionally, it may participate in castling. Each player starts the game with two rooks, one in each corner on their own side of the board. Formerly, the rook (from Persian رخ rokh/rukh, meaning chariot) was alternatively called the tower, marquess, rector, and comes (count or earl)...

The rook (Corvus frugilegus) is a member of the family Corvidae in the passerine order of birds... It is a large, gregarious, black-feathered bird, distinguished from similar species by the whitish featherless area on the face...Like other corvids, they are intelligent birds with complex behavioural traits and an ability to solve simple problems... It has black feathers that often show a blue or bluish-purple sheen in bright sunlight. The feathers on the head, neck and shoulders are particularly dense and silky. The legs and feet are generally black, the bill grey-black and the iris dark brown. 

Further thoughts:

The stylised “R” is uniquely Tim Drake’s in my opinion. Taking the name Rook would allow him to keep his “R.” 

Writers could toy with various thematic connections with all of the different meanings and alternatives of Rook, i.e. tower, marguees, rector, comes, chariot, and a very smart bird.

My favorite Tim Drake look is the One Year Later outfit. I love the simple design; the red, yellow, black combo; and the scalloped cape. 

As Rook, I can imagine him dressed in dark blueish-purple with greenish-blue seems and accents. Purple against a black scalloped cape might look cool. A black domino mask would suffice, but I’m also a fan of Gatchaman helmets and pointed nose peices.

You know how some corvids* use cars as really big, unnecessarily dangerous nutcrackers?

*documented in carrion crows living in Japan, but if you consider “Dude, trust me” a valid source, I saw rooks and jackdaws do this as well.

Once I was wondering what kinds of birds fly around sync points, so I did some research and compared the bird models to the species that lived in the places where each AC game takes place.

I used iNaturalist and eBird, which helped me compare individual bird species by region and appearance. Photo sources are below in the image. I wanted to put more photos, but Tumblr allows a maximum of 30 images per post.

I have to say that I'm not a bird/animal expert, just an animal enthusiast. I know populations of individual species were very different in the past than they are today.

You are welcome to correct me if I get anything wrong and If you know of any other species that I'm missing, please let me know. 💗

I decided to take screenshots of each bird so I could compare them, but this model actually appeared from AC1 to Liberation.

Fun Fact: In AC1 after synchronization, the eagle/hawk disappears permanently. Thankfully I didn't sync all the towers in Kingdom.

Common buzzard (Buteo buteo)

This species is most common bird of prey in Eurasia (or has the most observations). It has several morphs.

Long-legged buzzard (Buteo rufinus)

This species has the most observations in Turkey. It can easily be mistaken for a common buzzard.

Suggestions for AC3 & Liberation:

Red-shouldered hawk (Buteo lineatus) - immature

This bird has the most observations in the southeastern part of the USA. The immature individual is more similar to the model because the adult has a more brown or reddish body.

Red-tailed hawk (Buteo jamaicensis)

The most common bird of prey in North America, which is also divided into subspecies and morphs.

Bald eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus) - immature

Juvenile bald eagles have similar coloration to the model, as adult plumage coloration appears at less than four years of age.

There is another model of the eagle/hawk from AC4:

It's the same model, only the texture is now different.

It's obvious, isn't it? :) Also bald eagle appeared in AC3 Cinematic Trailer.

Next thing is that AC Rogue has actually two models of the eagle (couldn't find this model in files). The second eagle model appears only in the intro and outro of the game and it's more realistic and detailed.

Despite that, AC Rogue ended in Paris, where bald eagles do not occur there. It's possible Shay owns one that flies with him (my new headcanon!).

Unfortunately, I couldn't find the eagle model in the files in AC Unity as well, so I don't have a showcase.

It's a new model this time and it looks a little more realistic, but is still low-poly.

Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos)

This eagle most closely resembles the model, even though golden eagles are mostly common in mountainous areas. Also it appeared in one of AC Unity Cinematic Trailers.

AC Syndicate is one of the AC games that doesn't have bird of prey on the sync point. Instead they have the rooks (Corvus frugilegus) in London.

Again, I couldn't find the model in the files, but according to the screenshot, the model is more low-poly than the first model of the eagle/hawk.

Bonus: Playable Birds

Since AC Origins, the protagonists have bird companions, thanks to which we can find targets and explore area more easily.

Also the developers confirmed species of them:

Meant to symbolize that lightning has hit and thunder will come soon

Splinterstripe: Karkseek (Chip-long stripe)

Couldn't find splinter so chip it is, neither of the stripe words really fit them but I went with seek because it sounds better

Piperleap/star: Krekekluara/Krekekshai (Gray heron-has jumped/star)

Piper wasn't on the lexicon so I just went for a bird word that began with K to match with their siblings. The leap part of their name symbolizes their shift from cleric training to becoming a warrior

Tinybounce: Eebpipip (Small-bouncing) or Peskepipip (small cluster of flowers-bouncing)

Little guy, so smol. Second translation was literally made because it fits with zir family's names so well (such as petal and rose)

Runningflame/Crackling-Cookingfire/Gabrilfyn is absolutely my favorite, TOTALLY sounds like an honor title, 100% excellent

Here's some more words for you! While I'm at it, I'll fill out the missing corvids;

Rook (Corvus frugilegus) = Naahg

Jackdaw (Corvus monedula) = Niw

Hooded Crow (Corvus cornix) = Aai

Red-billed Chough (Pyrrhocorax pyrrhocorax) = Hraor

This, with Nyok for Raven, Rawk for Carrion Crow, Ke'ek for Magpie, and Mraaw for Corvids as a generic term, completes the entire family!

Next is a few wood-related terms that are missing;

Splinter = Koa

Wood (General) = Okok

Pith (The spongy inner wood of plants, usually in reference to flax or soft rush) = Sowa

And lastly... on pipers.

Pipers are a rare bird for Clan cats to see. They're mostly shorebirds that come in-land to nest. There's well over a dozen fat, thin-billed, long-legged little waterbirds (called Waders) they see on a regular basis, but the two piper species they'd know about would be very rare.

So here's a generic term for you, and a couple of the most common ones. I found a good way to give you a K-term while most of this family has peepy-type calls;

Wader (Generic) = Kikaboo From Fang + Beak + Fat. Includes rails, coots, pipers, dunlins, etc. Birds with long legs, long little beaks like a tooth, and round bodies, found near water.

Beak (of a bird) = Kaba

Moorhen = Ia The most common wader in the territory. The closest thing to a chicken the Clan cats have.

Curlew (Numenius arquata) = Urloop An interesting little bird that nests close to kestrel nests, in spite of the danger. Featured in a Clanmew saying, "Curlew in the shadow of a kestrel," roughly means, "Choosing danger for the sake of safety"

Little Ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius) = Bieew A symbol of peace between RiverClan and WindClan in the Lake territory. The southern delta is mostly gravel and stony, the exact place that a Bieew likes to nest. Both Clans have an interest in protecting these pretty little birds, which can bring them together for negotiation.

Common Sandpiper (Actitis hypoleucos) = Peepapi A rare shore-dwelling bird that occasionally comes in-land to nest; not discovered until the Clan cats returned to the Lake. When used as a name, has a connotation of traveling or going on a salt patrol.
