It was a fine day and I was making myself comfortable in the sheets of my bed in my dorm room when this news about a deadly monster took the world by storm.

A monster, which apparently came from bats. A monster which cannot be seen by the naked eye. A monster which weakens its victims to death. That day, I was too tired and ignorant to care, so I dusted off the absurd news and thought of the monster as just a rabid dog who bit a drunk and wasted man. I mean, who believes in monsters nowadays?

ays passed, and the rumor about the lethal beast, the beast which I thought of as just a mad dog, suddenly turned out to be true. In a blink of an eye, it was like the Mesozoic era all over again. The monsters reproduce on an exponential scale. They can devour you alive if it meets you, and your only line of defense are a mask to protect your face and a disinfectant in case their sharp claws touch you.

Months passed, and news about the inflating number of victims of these monsters swarm the public television. Masks and disinfectants became a necessity, to the point that they reached a price, which could not afford by many people.

People are forced to stay at home while the authorities think of ways to capture the beasts, which are all over the country now. What is more worrying about the current situation is that there is no immediate way to find out if the monsters are already right beside me. I am extremely anxious because the moment I find out that these monsters are surrounding me, there is a high chance that I myself have also already become a monster.

I know that it is dangerous outside the blankets, but I gathered all the remaining courage left in my body, packed my things, went out, and travelled back home in the province thinking that life there will be much more peaceful. To my surprise, these monsters are also the talk of our small town. The monsters have gone viral. If these beasts were a person, I bet that he/she has already grabbed this opportunity to start a YouTube channel considering how viral he/she is right now.

Thought bubbles suddenly popped when a friend suddenly called on the phone; shouting, weeping. “I met the monster. He is inside a human being”, he said. “He spat on me. His claws penetrated my skin. I have my mask and disinfectant with me but I do not know if they did their job. Am I going to die soon? Is the monster inside me now?” While crying, that friend told me that the monsters are travelling through human contact and it cannot really be seen. When it gets to you, it weakens you in different ways: it strangles you inducing difficulty in breathing, it brings flu-like conditions, and it makes you lose your senses of smell and taste. “This monster is different from those we are seeing on movies”, I replied.That was the last time I heard from that friend. He was apparently taken by specialists who are experts in fighting these monsters and was interrogated about his encounter with the stealthy and camouflaged behemoth.

I am now in my bed, same as where I was when I first heard the rumors. Bu the difference now is instead of being all comfortable, I am snuggled with my favorite pillow, doing twists and turns out of restlessness. I am thinking where the monsters could be at this very moment, the monsters which have brought pain to the people not only physically but also mentally and emotionally. It is still a question for me the name of the beasts which brought the present back to the great plague.

While I couldn’t recall the exact skills that were demonstrated I did the best I could, I improvised! Emotions have been up and down all week - passed the one month mark since being told about the lay off.
