Automatic Blinds in Mississauga: The Eco-Friendly Upgrade Your Green Home Needs
If you want to make your Mississauga home more eco-friendly, installing automatic blinds is a great first step. These high-tech window coverings do more than just enhance your home’s appearance — they help lower energy consumption, promote a more sustainable lifestyle, and add everyday convenience.
As Canadian homeowners become more aware of their impact on the environment, many are choosing sustainable upgrades that truly make a difference. From smart thermostats to energy-saving appliances, every change matters, especially when it comes to controlling your heating and cooling costs.
Automatic blinds adjust on their own based on sunlight, temperature, and your daily routine. They are simple to install, easy to use, and play a major role in keeping your home’s energy usage efficient throughout the year.
Let’s find out more about them.
Why Eco-Conscious Mississauga Homeowners Are Choosing Automatic Blinds
More homeowners are becoming aware of how important it is to save energy, and they are starting to make changes. Many are already using LED lights and energy-saving heating and cooling systems.
But one upgrade that often gets overlooked is motorized blinds. Unlike regular blinds, which need to be adjusted by hand, motorized (or automatic) blinds work on their own using a remote, phone app, or sunlight sensors. They open and close based on the time of day and temperature, helping keep your home warm in winter and cool in summer. This reduces the need to bump up the thermostat or turn on the air conditioner as much, saving energy and lowering your bills.
How Automatic Blinds Support Passive Heating and Cooling
Passive heating and cooling is all about using your home’s layout and natural energy—mainly sunlight and shade—to regulate temperature. In Canada’s changing climate, this method is especially helpful.
Winter Comfort Without Overheating Your Bills
During the colder months, motorized blinds can be set to open during the day to let in natural sunlight. This helps to warm your home without relying too much on the furnace.
As the sun sets and temperatures start to drop, the blinds close on their own to keep the heat inside. This automatic feature saves energy and makes your home more comfortable without any extra effort.
Many Mississauga homeowners have found that the best motorized blinds not only improve their comfort but also help reduce their heating costs during long Ontario winters.
Summer Cooling That Doesn’t Strain Your AC
In the summer, automatic blinds can sense strong sunlight and adjust to block it, helping to keep your home cooler. This means your air conditioner does not have to run as much, which saves energy.
When connected to a smart home system, these blinds work with your AC or thermostat to manage the temperature in your home more efficiently.
Sustainable Materials Matter
Living in an eco-friendly way is not only about saving energy but using products made from sustainable materials. Many automatic blinds are now available in options like bamboo, recycled polyester, and wood alternatives that are better for the environment.
When choosing automatic blinds, it is a good idea to look for green-certified products and avoid ones made with PVC, as they can release harmful chemicals. Choosing the right materials helps support a healthier home and planet.
The Energy-Saving Impact on Canadian Homes
The Greater Toronto Area experiences frequent changes in weather, making smart home features more useful than ever. Using automatic blinds along with energy-saving windows, LED lights, and smart thermostats can help create an energy-efficient home; they also add to property value.
Since most Canadian households spend over 60% of their energy bill on heating and cooling, using blinds that work with natural sunlight can lower those costs. This is especially true in larger homes or those with many windows.
More Than Just Eco-Friendly, They’re Incredibly Convenient
Sustainability is important, but so is comfort. And automatic blinds give you both.
Whether you are working, taking care of kids, or relaxing, you do not need to get up to adjust the blinds as the sunlight changes. You can use voice assistants like Google or Alexa, set daily schedules, or control them from your phone, which is helpful for busy people or frequent travellers.
Finding the Right Automatic Blinds
There are many trusted companies that offer eco-friendly and smart window blinds. When making your choice, look for energy ratings, solar-powered options, and systems that work with your smart home setup. Make sure the blinds fit your windows and ask about installation help and warranties. Many of the newer motorized blinds use low-power or rechargeable batteries, which is better for the environment.
Choosing automatic blinds is a smart step toward creating a more energy-efficient and comfortable Mississauga home. With benefits like lower energy bills, easier daily living, and support for a greener lifestyle, they offer real value to Canadian homeowners. Whether you are upgrading your current space or building new, automatic blinds are a reliable and eco-friendly choice.

How Do We Lower the Rising Costs of Recycling and Waste Collection in the GTA
“Help the environment. Recycle.” We’re told this. The message is in our schools, at work, in newspapers, and all over.
‘Recycle’ sounds nice. As a social concept, it makes sense. There’s a whole business behind recycling though.
The reality is that there’s a cost to recycling and waste collection in the GTA. The person who collects the waste must be paid. The facilities that sort the waste can only do so when rent, equipment, and utilities are covered.
If Toronto is to do its part and reduce waste, this means cost efficiencies will have to happen. Here’s the reality of the rising costs of recycling in our city.

Is recycling cost-effective in Toronto?
Recycling works best when it makes money. When a recycled material doesn’t have a market, we can’t sell it. As much as Toronto may want, recycling sometimes just isn’t possible. Waste collection costs are already high.
In 2017, Toronto made $16 million in revenues by selling recycled materials. According to estimates, this number has been cut in half since. The lowered cost of recycled commodities combined with contaminations has caused this.
Unfortunately, the cost of recycling in Toronto is rising faster than any other municipal service, including police, ambulance, or medical.
What is the cost of recycled commodities?
Commodities include paper, plastics, and metal. The cost for recycled materials like these are in a constant state of flux. It seems like every month we are seeing declines in market prices for aluminum or other materials. Here is a simple breakdown of the costs of recycling in Toronto in 2020.
The cost of recycling collection is $65/tonne. The processing cost of recycling is $125/tonne.
How we justify those costs is by selling the materials we recycle. As mentioned, prices are always changing. On average, these are the approximate prices our recycling materials have been selling for.
Cardboard sells for $55/tonne. Plastic water bottles sell for $460/tonne. HDPE bottles, such as detergents, sell for $516/tonne. Mixed plastics sell for $170/tonne. Non-aluminum steel cans sell for $290/tonne. Aluminum cans sell for $960/tonne.
What’s the most valuable recycling material in Toronto?
The most valuable recycling is aluminum. This is the money-maker. Despite the fact it makes up only a small percentage of the recycling collected, aluminum generates roughly a fourth of Toronto’s recycling revenues.
What has lowered recycled commodity prices worldwide?
Two years ago in 2018, China stopped accepting certain recycling products. This meant aluminum, plastics, and paper had nowhere to go. The market was flooded with product. This immediately dropped down pricing.
Prices are so low for some materials. Items like cheap plastics no longer have buyers. The future could change this. For now, continuing to collect low-cost recyclables isn’t feasible. Toronto waste collection facilities and recycling sorters are having to pay to get rid of materials like these.
The prices of mixed paper, cardboard, film plastic, and aluminum cans have fallen by double digits. This isn’t just a Toronto problem. Communities worldwide are feeling the pressure. Some American municipalities have even cancelled their recycling programs altogether.
What reduces the value of recycling in Toronto?
Contamination in blue bins can reduce the value of Toronto recycling to zero. More than 25 percent of the materials collected as recycling is not able to be recycled. This number is growing.
Homeowner errors lower city revenues. Buyers are picky. They understandably want value from the recycled materials they buy. What they don’t want is contaminated, lower quality product.
A piece of paper with a coffee stain on it is garbage. A greasy cardboard pizza box is garbage. Contamination turns recycling into waste. Another example is a half-filled jar of mayonnaise placed in a blue bin. This contaminates all of the contents. If the jar gets mixed throughout a recycling truck, it then ruins everything inside.
If we are going to lower the costs of recycling and waste collection, we must maximize value where we have it. Contamination numbers have to come down. The way to do this is through education.
What can we do to fix recycling costs in Toronto?
There are risks to recycling. You’re relying on the market to set the price. This isn’t ever going to change.
The best way to fix recycling costs in Toronto is with the right program infrastructure investments. Focus on what’s making profits, locally and worldwide. Aluminum cans have a high return. Prioritize, build around what’s building revenue, and reinvest in other money-making channels.
Toronto is fortunate to be a center of innovation. Cultivate partnerships with local companies, manufacturers, and organizations who are willing to buy and reuse recycled materials. New opportunities present every year.
Local networks are where the most revenue could potentially be derived. Local recycling purchasing partnerships mean lower transport costs and fewer expenses. It may be possible to develop local systems wherein Toronto can be less reliant on world commodity costs to derive revenues.
More recycling facilities are being built. This is going to mean more recycling product. From organics to electronics, there’s a way to derive revenues from these sources. Toronto simply doesn’t have the infrastructure yet to find them. But in time, the city will.
Extended Producer Responsibility is another concept some are advocating for. This would implement a system where producers of waste are responsible for its disposal. This diverts cost. Areas of BC already used an EPR system like this. It’s helped them lower costs. Maybe it can do similar things for Ontario.
How do we create a better recycling system in Toronto?
A better recycling system in Toronto is achievable through two processes. The first is to build the infrastructure and system. The second is to supply those systems.
Supply means to create more recycling. We do this by banning single-use disposables like plastic. Implement programs that incentivize alternative recycling materials over single-use disposables.
Every business, household, and person has the chance to become zero waste. That is to reduce landfill waste to zero. This would increase recycling rates tremendously which gives the city increased value in what they’re turning out.
If we are serious about reducing the costs of recycling and waste management, build better infrastructure and supply, supply, supply.
Are you looking for waste collection in the GTA? Contact Core Mini Bins. Improve your landfill diversion rate, increase recycling, and create a greener waste management system for yourself. It’s simple to do and we can help. Your recycling bin and waste disposal is our job.

Data Center Demand Offers Opportunity To Supply Energy To Housing
These days every company is being valued on the data that it captures from customers, even making some organizations’ data worth more than the company itself.
With that being said, most organizations are scrambling to create ways to capture that data and have it available to access anytime, which requires some hardware. That hardware can mean a data center, which has become a real estate boom.
Diana Olick, real estate correspondent at CNBC, reported that the remote work trend due to the pandemic is creating more demand for data, and supply grew by 5.9% in major data centers. In the same article, commercial real estate firm CBRE predicted that 2021 is going to be a record year for the growth in the data real estate sector, which is measured in power, not square footage.
“These building types are so valuable to our modern lifestyles, they are being constructed at a pace that will see the amount of facilities more than double in the next 10 years,” said Zenon Radewych, principal at Toronto-based architecture firm WZMH Architects.
The demand is predicted to continue to grow because of the increased use of internet of things devices, along with enhanced computing ability, self-driving cars, 5G technology, networking infrastructure and storage resources.
As data centers are currently built and designed, they don’t last as long as traditional buildings, with a lifespan of only 15 to 20 years. With growing demand, short lives and huge energy needs, data centers are a threat to the built environment’s positive environmental progress.
“For example, Northern Virginia is known as the data center capital of the world,” said Radewych. “There, Louden County has more than 60 data centers, which house an average of 12 generators each – this is equal to generating power for more than 45,000 residential apartment units per month.”
Otto VanGeet is principal engineer of the Applied Engineering Group at research group National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and points out that data centers represent 2% of the electrical use in the US right now, and that number continues to grow.
Data Center Passive Energy For Housing
Data centers have large uninterruptible power supply systems that are made of many generators and are designed to operate for multiple days at a time.
As WZMH explains, these generators are tested once per month, but the energy generated from the routine testing is not used to support any of the building’s electricity requirements, so essentially, the electricity created goes to waste. Plus, data center servers work all hours of the day to satisfy the country’s vast data demands, which generates a lot of heat that also goes to waste.
The combination of generator tests and wasted heat present an opportunity: co-locating housing with data centers, where the housing will be able to benefit from the wasted energy from the routine testing of onsite generators and the wasted heat that can be used to heat housing in particular climates.
“Waste heat can serve to heat entire residential buildings. With thermoelectric panels, some can even be converted into ‘recycled’ electricity that can be fed back to a community-based DC microgrid, which can provide power for housing and other buildings,” said Jeremy Lytle, a student at Ryerson University working with WZMH on a new product to leverage the microgrids that operate with direct current or DC electricity.
While NREL is running research on managing waste heat better, VanGeet points out that the industry as a whole isn’t doing a very good job with it yet.
“Data centers are essentially giant electric heaters,” he said. “That heat is rejected to the ambient. Big opportunity is to start reusing that waste heat for something. We do that right now at NREL. We publish reports on how we are doing with that and encourage that.”
WZMH has been able to demonstrate that using five units of data center floor area for every 100 units of residential floor area can provide enough waste heat to completely eliminate the natural gas demand for residential space heating in a cold climate like Toronto where the firm is located. Which is money in the bank, because data center waste heat is 100% reliable.
WZMH reports that capturing the energy from data center generator testing could help give one day of … [+] free electricity to a 125-unit multifamily building.
WZMH
WZMH estimates that a data center with eight three-megawatt diesel generators that are tested for one hour each month can supply a 125-unit multifamily building with enough energy to cover the equivalent of one day per week of free electricity for every unit in the building.
Alternatively, VanGeet suggests that the key strategy should be just to minimize generator run time.
Making It a Reality
Whether by choice or encouraged by new building codes, data center owners and developers are interested in greener solutions to reduce the carbon footprint.
NREL explains that the general data center efficiency strategy is to first make the data center as efficient as possible, measured by power usage effectiveness. Then, reuse as much waste heat as possible, measured by energy reuse effectiveness. Then, reduce the water use as much as possible as measured by water usage effectiveness. The lab’s current work is focused on transitioning data center design from air cooling to primarily warm water liquid cooling, which improves all the metrics, including power, energy and water usage effectiveness.

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory is examining data center energy use and proposes warm water … [+] cooling as a better, more efficient approach.
National Renewable Energy Laboratory
Yet, most of the time it comes down to cost.
Developers are looking at how to “green” data centers by using low-emission building materials to aid in creating sustainable ecosystems and ensure efficient waste recycling. Some data centers are being designed with liquid cooling technology and direct-to-chip cooling server racks to prevent overheating.
Plus, innovators such as Google and Iron Mountain have committed to sourcing renewable energy to move to a truly carbon free energy supply.
The costs of the system proposed by WZMH Architects would be between $10 and $15 million, which is much less than the cost of building a traditional power plant. Although it’s less than a power plant, it’s still a hefty amount, so the cost would need to be distributed among the various project stakeholders and benefactors.
Detailing the Design
Lytle has been working with WZMH to create what they call a GENeBLOK, which is a carbon positive concrete block system that stores the wasted energy from the generator test firings and then can provide it to neighboring residences as it’s needed. The GENeBLOK actually decouples the generators from the residential building systems, providing a win-win for all parties.

The GENeBLOK weighted energy storage system concept created by WZMH would be connected to a DC … [+] microgrid to help transfer wasted energy into a usable source.
WZMH Architects
The GENeBLOK is an electrical connection to the data center generators. The wasted energy from generator testing is fed to motors that are part of GENeBLOK, which also has a system of concrete weights. As the concrete weights are raised and lowered, they regenerate energy through the motors. This energy is then fed to an adjacent battery plant for storage.
This type of gravity storage can be cheaper than lithium ion batteries, including construction, running costs and maintenance, according to a recent article in Science Magazine. But, the technology is nascent, so more data needs to be collected.
The battery plant is a green energy source for nearby housing. All of this is possible through a DC microgrid that WZMH also designed to provide a more sustainable, resilient avenue of energy for housing as it becomes a greater concern from the climate events that are disrupting service for so many across the country on a regular basis.
“Resilience is the ability of a system to absorb abnormalities without experiencing a permanent change to functionality,” said Lytle. “Buildings need to provide power that occupants need. Today, there usually is a single source and single point of failure. But, with a DC microgrid, it’s multiple, diversified sources. By diversifying those sources, you can significantly reduce the likelihood that they will all drop out at the same time.”
A DC microgrid community is possible now as more of the electronic devices we use day to day are DC-based and the renewable energy systems that we are using more in housing design are also DC-based. WZMH’s DC microgrid community idea includes battery storage systems, like the GENeBLOK, that are capturing energy from a variety of sources.
There are other benefits. A DC microgrid would be able to operate independently if there was a loss of the normal AC, or alternating current, supply from the utility. Plus, DC power distribution can provide efficiency gains due to the reduction in AC/DC transformation.
In the future, WZMH believes that we can build systems that are independent of utility grids. Radewych and Lytle envision many opportunities to tap into the surrounding environment to make it work, such as with flooring that generates power, elevators, body heat from occupants, captured rainwater, recycling artificial light and waste heat, and the list goes on.
“Residential, commercial, and retail don’t all operate the same way or use energy at the same time,” said Radewych. “There is an opportunity to have complimentary conditions to transfer energy when it’s needed.”

Changing Your Lifestyle? - Ideas To Make Your Lifestyle Go Green

These ideas will cost you close to no time, save cash, enhance your health and you will do something great for the environment!
Have dated pairs of prescription lenses taking up space in your cupboard? - recycle them
You could have a new prescription along with your old glasses are no longer being used, or you just decided to purchase a new set; your old eyeglasses can help lots of people around the world. Only 13 percent of visual impaired individuals reside in developed countries, which means a significant number live in countries which don't have easy access to the proper help. Just by devoting one pair of prescription lenses you've helped enhance someones life greatly. Although donating glasses isn't going to make a significant shift to pollution, it certainly makes you feel great to know you're helping.
Do not let the rain go to waste - shop it
It's usually not the best idea to drink rain water, but it may be fantastic for watering your garden or washing machine. There's a enormous offer of tubs in stores, or you could make your own.
Drying clothes the natural way - out
Our mothers and grandmothers hung their clothes outside and they did not have any issues with it. Don't worry; it won't hurt your social status.
Forget the tub, Use your shower
Health issues can be exacerbated by bathing and bathing too much or for long periods of time; besides that your bills will jump up and heating of water consumes plenty of energy. If you bathe in chlorinated water, the fumes may lead to health complications, so the longer you're in the water the more you inhale. Moreover a fantastic thing to do would be to use an attachment on your shower that cuts down the amount of water you use.
Share transport with a few work mates
Sharing a car has been well known for years and a terrific way to decrease expense; local governments urge this idea, some governments even designate street lanes for car sharers. Regrettably, as a Toronto lofts realtor I want to push a lot. Think about an ordinary car driver, they sail about 100 km per week and about 5000 km annually. If you car share, then between you both, you'd save about 170 litres of gasoline and 400 kg of CO2 annually, consider how much you can share if there were 3 or 4 of you in a car. If you're not engaging in a car sharing scheme run by your business, take some time to arrange your friends or colleagues with similar commuting habits and help you save money, have a conversation with your passengers or driver and support the environment.
Toronto property specialist Julie Kinnear has been helping people sell and purchase their houses for the past 13 years. She's famous for her added value service and can assist you with many tips about enhancing your loved ones, saving money and recycling.
A Green Lifestyle Idea That Rewards You - Getting Paid to Recycle
Could working toward a green lifestyle really put money in your pockets? It can if you get paid to recycle.
The notion of being paid to recycle may seem far-fetched but that isn't the case. Enter a business out of Pennsylvania that has come up with an ingenious idea about how to encourage people to recycle. The business is named RecycleBank, and it is a Philadelphia-based private enterprise which has a high tech thought about how to attract more people in recycling. Here's how you might have the ability to make this work for you.
Issue wheeled totes, each with an implanted computer chip, to individuals who will help with recycling. The implanted chip retains certain information regarding the men and women who have the tote-name, address and telephone number. Moreover, the processor carries a bank account number, connected to Recycle Bank, that automatically tallies the quantity of recyclable waste that's turned into a collection truck. The truck comes with a unique computer and barcode system which computes the value of the items turned in for recycling. It functions along the very same lines as the self-serve lane in a supermarket.
Once the data to the recycled material is listed, the computer calculates an amount of RecycleBank Dollars which are deposited in the RecycleBank accounts of the client, who then can use to all those RecycleBank Dollars at participating retailers.
A few of the companies already working with RecycleBank include Target, Starbucks and Whole Foods Market, and their hopes are to have many regional businesses included too. The Recycle Bank Dollars are somewhat flexible and may be utilized in various ways, according to the taste of the customer. By way of instance, you could decide to give your Recycle Bank Dollars into a local charity or organization as opposed to spend the money on your own.
I believe this company has a excellent idea: people are given a chance to help preserve resources, maintain their regional environment cleaner, and help an organization of their choice. In keeping with a green lifestyle, encouraging recycling also meets one of the 3 Rs (the 3 Rs are reduce, reuse, recycle).
Getting paid to recycle isn't just an opportunity for homeowners and consumers. Small businesses may also participate.
The incentives created by Recycle Bank will also be better than alternative that's been proposed. Called"Pay-As-You-Throw" (PAYT), this notion operates in the opposite direction of Recycle Bank's program. Consumers need to pay for what they throw away rather than be rewarded for what they recycle. Human nature being what it is, the reward will probably draw more participants than the punishment.
Many towns and cities can gain not only in the financial benefits of a program like Recycle Bank, but also from the incentive to clean up the local environment by residents. If the program is available where you live, you have the chance to make money out of your recycling efforts. Check it out.

Help for a world drowning in microplastics
Look around you. How many plastic items do you see? If you are like most people, there are probably a lot.
Research shows that people recycle only nine percent of plastic wastes. The rest — water bottles, pens, shopping bags — can end up in our water, air and soil. Exposed to light and waves, plastic breaks down into teeny-tiny bits. Known as microplastics, they have become a growing concern. That’s partly because when they end up in the environment, they also can end up in animals, our food and our drinking water.
The most recent estimate suggests that Americans alone eat or drink some 70,000 of these polluting microplastic bits each year.
Discarded plastic is not the only source of them. Some bits are made on purpose, for use in skin-care products and toothpaste. They’re used to scrub away dead skin and cavity-causing material on teeth. When we shower or rinse our mouths, those microplastics go down the drain. From there, they end up in our waterways.
Researchers have even shown that washing clothes made of fleece and other types of plastic sheds bits of lint. Those fibers also go down the drains and into the water.
Scientists began reporting microplastics in the ocean as far back as the 1970s. Since then, several hundred studies have shown that microplastics taint the environment. This includes the world’s oceans, lakes and rivers.
But research is underway to slow the growth of this pollution — and perhaps clean up some of what’s already out there.
The problem with plastics
Our drinking water comes from lakes, rivers and groundwater aquifers. Any of these may be tainted with microplastics. Our bodies will pee out plastics we’ve ingested, but no one knows how long it takes for them to move through the body, says Sam Athey. She studies sources of microplastics at the University of Toronto in Canada. The longer microplastics stay in our bodies, she says, the greater our exposure to them.
Scientists Say: Microplastic
Researchers don’t yet know the risks, says Athey. But she finds reasons to be cautious. One is that plastic is made from oil and includes many different petroleum-based ingredients. Scientists don’t yet know how many of these might be toxic.
Ingredients in some plastics, such as polyvinyl chloride, can cause cancer. And phthalates (THAAL-aytes) — used to soften some types of plastics — can mimic the activity of hormones. These false hormones can cause unexpected changes in how cells grow and develop. Such changes may lead to disease.
Plastic also can soak up pollution like a sponge. The pesticide DDT and PCBs (a type of insulating fluid) are two types of toxic pollution found in plastics floating in the ocean.
Plastic bits also have been turning up in fish, birds, corals and other aquatic animals. That’s a problem because plastic does not provide the energy and nutrients these creatures need to grow and thrive.
The case for saying no to plastic
The simple solution is to not buy plastic items, says Peter Kershaw. He is an independent marine scientist who lives in Norwich, England. He wrote a 2018 report for the United Nations on alternatives that could help reduce plastic litter in the ocean.
“Ask yourself,” he says: “Do I really need that plastic bag to carry my shopping home?” Or do you really need a plastic straw to drink your soda or milk?
Straws make up a lot of the plastic trash found washed up on ocean coasts and lakeshores. One way to cut down on your plastic use is to avoid straws (if you are able to drink without one).Chemist 4 U/Flickr (CC BY 2.0)
The leaders of some countries also have been asking that question. They’ve decided the answer is “no” and have banned single-use plastic items. These are things, such as packaging, that we use once and then throw away.
Bangladesh, Kenya and New Zealand are three countries that have banned plastic bags. Some U.S. cities and a few states also have banned them. Representing 28 countries, the European Parliament has agreed to ban nearly a dozen single-use plastics by 2021. Europe’s ban includes single-use cutlery, plates, straws and drink stirrers. Canada announced a plan to ban these, too, by 2021.
Such bans are a good start. But scientists say people must do more.
The promise and peril of biodegradable materials
One strategy is to find alternatives to conventional plastics. Some companies are starting to replace single-use plastic items with biodegradable alternatives. These new products are designed to break down into harmless chemicals.
Materials decay when microbes feed on them, breaking big molecules into smaller, simpler ones (such as carbon dioxide and water). Other living things can then feed on these breakdown products to grow.
This environmental activist calls himself the Bag Monster. He posed for the camera at the Oceans Conference in New York City in June 2017. His suit illustrates how many plastic bags an individual shopper might use in a year.Peter Kershaw
Traditional plastic takes a very long time to decay. That’s because it’s made from petroleum, and few microbes choose to eat that. Biodegradable plastic, in contrast, is made from biological materials on which many microbes happily dine. These range from trees, sugarcane and corn stalks to shrimp shells.
But there is a problem with such materials, says Kershaw. They decay only at very high temperatures — typically 50º Celsius (122º Fahrenheit). Plus, those high temperatures must be maintained for several weeks for microbes to do their job.
Some cities have industrial compost systems that meet those conditions. But many do not. Instead, biodegradable plastic items can end up in a cold ocean or lake where they can take decades or even centuries to break down, depending on the type of plastic.
Sunlight can speed their breakdown. But scientists recently showed some biodegradable plastic bags were still strong and intact after three years outdoors. In that regard, they were not much better than regular plastic.
The other problem with biodegradable plastics is that people often toss them into the recycling bin with regular plastic.
“Once you mix them together — and they look the same, so people do it — it makes it harder to recycle the plastic,” says Kershaw.
Filtering microplastics from the laundry
Researchers at the University of Toronto are testing this washing machine filter in 100 homes. It is designed to capture microplastic lint from clothing. The researchers want to see how much microplastic pollution it could keep out of local waters.Courtesy of Wexco
Cleaning clothes has become an enormous source of waterborne plastic. Washing machines tumble and wear down fabrics. This releases lots of little pieces of lint. If the fabric was made from nylon, polyester, polyethylene or polyamide, for instance, those lint particles will be plastic.
One 2018 study found that polyester fleece was a big culprit. A study that came out two years earlier showed that washing a single 6 kilogram (13 pound) load of clothes made from synthetic fabrics could release some 700,000 plastic lint fibers into the wash water. That explains why some researchers are looking for ways to keep that lint from going down the drain.
One project has been testing special filters to catch those fibers. It’s being run by researchers at the University of Toronto and at Georgian Bay Forever (a local environmental group). This past July, they installed the test filters on washing machines in 100 households in Parry Sound, Ontario. Parry Sound is on the shores of Canada’s Georgian Bay. It is part of Lake Huron.
The local water-treatment plants aren’t designed to remove microplastics. So any lint microplastics from the town’s wash will end up in the bay. The test filters are about twice the size of a standard water bottle. In recent tests, they removed roughly 90 percent of microfibers, notes project leader Lisa Erdle. She works at the University of Toronto.
This is how much microplastic lint one family in Canada produced during a month’s worth of laundry. An experimental filter on their washing machine removed the plastic lint before it could drain into nearby Georgian Bay.Georgian Bay Forever
“Testing in our lab shows they [the filters] work in a controlled setting,” she notes. “We’re curious to see if they work [just as well] in real people’s homes.” Whether they do may depend on whether people use the filters properly. For instance, she notes, “How often do they change the filter?”
Erdle and her team tested the wash water before the filters were installed. They are now repeating those tests to see how well the filters reduced the release of plastic lint.
The study will run for two years. Its results will be shared with the public. Because Parry Sound has a population of just 6,400, Erdle suspects the decrease in microplastic fibers will be noticeable.
The ideal solution would be to not manufacture plastic-based clothing in the first place, says Erdle. But filtering lint out of wash water and then burying it in a landfill would at least keep the pollution out of our waters.
Can nanotechnology bring mega benefits?
What about the microplastic pollution already polluting rivers, lakes and the ocean? In July 2019, researchers in Australia reported a potential solution for breaking microplastics into smaller, harmless molecules.
They created nanometer-scale coil-shaped tubes. Made from carbon, these tubes are too small to see (even with a classroom microscope). But they may produce a very visible change in water pollution by breaking down microplastics.
Here’s how they work: The carbon nanotubes are coated in nitrogen. When mixed with a compound known as POMS (short for peroxymonosulfate [Per-OX-ee-mon-oh-SUL-fate]), the nanotubes create new chemicals. Known as reactive oxygen species, or ROS, these new chemicals crumble microplastics into smaller components.

This tiny carbon nanotube (twisted into a coil to make it more rugged) was imaged by a scanning electron microscope. When mixed in water with a compound called peroxymonosulfate, such nanotubes produce chemicals that break down microplastics. J. Kang et al/Matter 2019
Chemical engineer Jian Kang led the research. He works at Curtin University in Perth. His team added their carbon nanotubes to 80 milliliters (one-third cup) of water tainted with microplastic particles. Then they warmed the water to 120 °C (248 °F) for eight hours. Heating the water speeds the process. Manganese embedded within each nanotube made the tubes magnetic. This meant the researchers could use magnets to pull them out of the water for reuse.
The treatment reduced the amount of microplastics in the water by about a third to one-half, Kang’s group showed. It reported the findings on July 31, 2019 in the journal Matter.
Chemicals produced by the plastic’s breakdown don’t appear very toxic, notes Long Chen. He is an environmental engineer at Northeastern University in Boston, Mass. Chen was not involved in the work. The Australian researchers exposed green algae to water containing the microplastic by-products. After two weeks, they saw no change in the algae’s growth.
Clearly, more research is needed. But the early testing does appear promising.
“It’s great to have this option as a tool in a toolbox” to curb microplastic pollution, says Bart Koelmans. He is an environmental scientist at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.
However, researchers caution there still is a lot of work to do. What’s more, Koelmans says, such new programs to clean up plastics “should not dismiss us from thinking about what the real problem is — and that’s the [release] of plastic into places where it does not belong.”

Sustainable Creatives at OCAD U: Arya Djenar

Arya Djenar, 3rd Year Graphic Design Student at OCAD University
Interview by Aashish Arora
Today in conversation we have Arya Djenar, a third-year graphic design student at OCAD University. Arya has an interest in constructing and building objects out of reusable materials.
This hobby has inspired him to create sustainable products and change his way of ideating while designing for the real world.
His theory of thinking of everything as Zero Waste has helped him create functional products from unconventional materials. Arya always tries to leave no waste or as minimal waste possible.
What Arya enjoys the most is “The Process.” From finding scrap materials either at school or at home, to thinking about all the possible ideas, to finally creating a functional product. This all makes the journey very meditative for him.
Any time he thinks of purchasing a product, he always attempts to make it on his own before investing the money. This is a very ecological and economical choice for him.
Even when working on school projects that have strict guidelines, Arya tries to incorporate reusable materials into his design to complete assignments.
Arya has created several objects from reusable and waste material. As well, Arya has a deep interest in music and he is part of a Japanese jazz band based out of Toronto. One of his main (zero waste) projects where he combined his love for music with creating physical products is the “Cigar Box Guitar”. He used very simple material which he found lying around in his home – like a Cigar Box, Q tips, and Wine Cork – and created a fully functional guitar out of it. He also loves upcycling his old clothes and especially old denim into bags and other objects.

Cigar Box Guitar made with Cigar Box, Wine Cork, Recycled wood, Cotton Swabs and Old Guitar strings
Where does your inspiration come from?
“My dad has always been my strongest inspiration, as he taught me how to value every object and think of every object as a resource that has a never-ending journey.
Most of the furniture that we have at home is made by me and my dad.
Asymmetry is something that has inspired me as a design form and has always helped me to look at things differently.”
What does the process teach you?
“The process teaches me a lot of different values. It also helps me to focus better and value things around me. It also helps to decrease my stress level and channel the energies into a specific task. It’s a very meditative process for me.
In terms of design thinking, it inspires me to take this process elsewhere and incorporate this into the real world and creating a design system that is functional and unique at the same time.”

Bags and wallets made out of recycled and used clothes and rags
What message do you have for your peers at OCAD U?
“Try to look for leftover materials on campus as they still have function. This will help you save money and will make your process even more interesting. And always remember, function is more important than just aesthetics.
Take some time to create a physical object every once in a while from the material you already have at home it will really change the way you think and try to create a product before buying one!”

Tips on How to Increase Waste Management Efficiency for a Small Business or Corporate Office
Every business creates waste. Even companies who plant trees create waste products in their efforts. Your average Toronto corporate office generally fixates on other priorities above management of their waste. That doesn’t mean it isn’t important.
A lot of offices in Toronto want ways to reduce waste, increase recycling, and manage the waste they have to create. As a waste disposal company, there are two pieces of advice we give on this – properly dispose of the waste you’re already creating and use alternatives to reduce the waste created.

Where are there opportunities to purpose and reuse your office business waste?
An office that wants to be smart about their waste needs relationships. A lot of larger multi-national corporations launch initiatives based off these relationships that focus on recycling and/or repurposing waste.
As a small business or independent business, the biggest opportunity there is to develop relationships that allow you to repurpose waste is by hiring a waste disposal company. Waste disposal, junk removal, dumpster, and mini bin rental companies all have partners in waste management and recycling facilities. They do this on a daily basis. They also know where to take things like electronics and furniture which can be donated.
How do I make a waste management strategy for my business?
Every corporate office, small business, or commercial establishment of any kind should have some sort of a waste disposal plan in place. A business can’t get by without it. If you want to control your office waste better, get to know the waste you’re creating and where it’s going.
A key component of a waste management plan is where you’re going to put the waste. Dumpster rentals and mini bin rentals can be advantageous for this reason. If you don’t have space for a dumpster, consider assigning a room to be your ‘waste room’ ensuring it doesn’t conflict with fire safety standards.
Throughout your office, you want to have the necessary garbage cans to collect and keep separate the waste and recycling as well.
What is the value of a waste disposal service for my business?
Core Mini Bins is a top Toronto waste disposal service with dumpsters, mini bins, junk removal, and other business-friendly services. There are several benefits to working with a waste management company like our own.
Convenience. Find better ways to manage your waste. Reduce your impact on the environment and get the numbers to show it. Have a way to separate hazardous materials to ensure proper disposal. Have strategies to safely dispose of or recycle electronics, metals, and chemicals. Cost-effectiveness. Receive customized suggestions on a waste management plan that prioritizes landfill waste reduction. Get more space in your office to work with, after removing broken equipment and instituting a waste collection area. Ensure no fines relating to waste disposal are assigned to your business.
How can I maximize the affordability of a waste disposal plan for a business?
If you find that it’s going to cost you more to successfully manage waste through a dumpster rental, one strategy is to try and split these costs between other businesses. If you’re fortunate enough to have a business neighbour, ask to see if they want to share the expense with you.
Depending on the situation, you may need to ask a neighbour for their permission to install a dumpster on the premises anyways. If they do agree to split the costs with you, that’s instant savings on your wallet and without compromising the efficiency of your office waste management strategy.
Do I need junk removal for my Toronto business?
Increasing waste management efficiency can sometimes mean starting with a clean slate. Decluttering an office is a great way to get out the things you don’t need and start anew. Assuming there’s equipment you’re not using, computer or electronics waste that hasn’t yet been addressed, and other objects you want gone, schedule a small business Toronto junk removal.
A junk removal service will drop in and pick up everything you want to part with. Before scheduling the pick-up, give yourself the time to sort through everything in the office. Some office managers may want to allow themselves a weekend to do this. If you have office electronics, chemicals, hazardous materials, or other special items that require special consideration, mention this to the company.
What waste can be recycled in an office?
A lot of what offices produce in waste is recyclable but some waste understandably isn’t. Efforts to reduce waste in landfills from your office involve replacing non-recyclables with recyclable alternatives. Here is a quick list of office recyclables in Toronto.
Paper products, including newspapers, cardboard, flyers, and shredded documents. Aluminum. Electronics such as televisions, computers, monitors, printers, tablets, and phones. Paints including most aerosols, varnishes, and stains. Batteries can be recycled through Home Depot or Staples. Fluorescent light tubes require special handling but can be recycled.
What are some strategies to use to increase office recycling?
The more you recycle, the less landfill waste you create – that’s the bottom line. If you want to own an eco-friendly, environmentally sustainable business, pro-recycling strategies should be a focus of your waste management plan. Here are our best tips on how to increase office recycling.
Separate organics. If you have an office kitchen, have a separate trash can for food scraps, paper towels and napkins, coffee grinds and tea bags, and compostable plates and cutlery.
Purchase inventory that is recyclable. Eliminate waste that isn’t. For example, single-use plastics relating to food packaging, straws, and plastic bags have alternatives. Be mindful of what you’re buying for the office. Ask if there’s a pro-recycling alternative that can replace it.
Have systems in place to collect more recycling so that recyclables aren’t ending up in the trash because of there being no place to put them. Common recycling materials mistaken as waste in offices include electronics, light bulbs, batteries, printer and toner cartridges, cardboard, aluminum cans, and magazines.
Stop buying disposable coffee cups. The average office worker in Canada uses 500 disposable cups a year. Instead of disposables, provide reusable coffee mugs and water bottles. This cuts out a huge amount of waste going into your waste stream on a daily basis.
Encourage a paperless office environment. While few offices can go fully paperless, opt for digital communications whenever possible. Edit and proof any documents on the computer before printing. Try to print on both sides of the paper, when you do have to print. Try to switch all paperwork relating to purchasing and invoicing, memos, announcements, and internal communications to email.
Opportunities to increase office recycling exist. Are you ready to take your office waste management to the next level – call Core Mini Bins today.

blockchain Revolution and co-founders of the blockchain Research Institute. Alex’s new book is Financial Services Revolution. Together they wrote the report blockchain Solutions in Pandemics.
This is one of those rare turning points in history. The COVID-19 pandemic will profoundly change our behavior and society. Many institutions will come under scrutiny and, we hope, change for the better.
At the blockchain Research Institute, we’re doing our part to facilitate positive change. Technologies like artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, augmented/virtual reality, and above all, blockchain are more relevant than ever – not just to business and the economy but to the future of public health and the safety of global populations.
Traditional systems have failed us and it’s time for a new paradigm. To build on Victor Hugo, “Nothing is more powerful than an idea that has become a necessity.”
Health care crises and blockchain: A framework
Given the urgent need for global solutions, the blockchain Research Institute convened a virtual roundtable of 30 experts from five continents. We discussed the challenges of COVID-19 and the possibilities of using blockchain in areas of need. In our special report, “blockchain Solutions in Pandemics,” we developed a framework for facing pandemics together in these five areas.
1. Self-sovereign identity, health records and shared data
Data is the most important asset in fighting pandemics. If any useful data exists now, it sits in institutional silos. We need better access to the data of entire populations and a speedy consent-based data sharing system. To accelerate discovery, the blockchain startup Shivom is working on a global project to collect and share virus host data in response to a call for action from the European Union’s Innovative Medicines Initiative. In Honduras, Civitas – an app developed by the start-up Emerge – is linking Hondurans’ government-issued ID numbers with blockchain records used to track medical appointments. Doctors simply scan the app to review a patient’s symptoms verified and recorded by telemedicine services.
Dr. Raphael Yahalom of MIT and the Oxford-Hainan Research Institute is working on Trustup, a trust-reasoning framework that can systematically highlight the ways in which health data recorded on a blockchain ledger is more trustworthy than data stored in conventional databases. The trade-off between privacy and public safety need not be so stark. Through self-sovereign identities, where individuals own their health records and can freely volunteer it to researchers, we can achieve both.
2. Just-in-time supply chain solutions
Supply chains are critical infrastructure for our globally connected economy, and COVID-19 has put them under tremendous strain, exposing potential weaknesses in their design. We must rebuild supply chains to be transparent, where users can access information quickly and trust that it’s accurate. The start-up RemediChain is doing just that for the pharmaceutical supply. One of its co-founders, Dr. Philip Baker, was interested in tracking down and recycling unused but still efficacious medications such as those used for cancer. He saw blockchain as means of recovering their chain of custody:
By posting the medication and its expiration date, people all over the country can create a decentralized national inventory of surplus medication. When there is [a] sudden run on a previously ubiquitous medication like hydroxychloroquine, healthcare professionals can call on this surplus as a life-saving resource. The same principle applies for ventilators and PPE.
blockchain serves as a “state machine” that gives us visibility into the state of our suppliers as well as the assets themselves. When COVID-19 hit, the start-up VeriTX – a virtual marketplace for digital assets like patented design files – pivoted to medical supplies, so that medical facilities could print the parts needed at one of the 180 3D printing facilities in VeriTX’s network. VeriTX can reverse-engineer a part and then build it much faster and at a lower cost than getting it from the original manufacturer or replacing the equipment.
3. Sustaining the economy: How blockchain can help
If supply chains are the machinery of global commerce, then money is its lubricant. Yet, money as a carrier of the disease has been a stressor during this pandemic. We highlight the what, why and how of digital cash as an alternative. Costs are also an issue. The Ethereum-based Solve.Care platform is dramatically lowering health-care administrative costs so that more of a patient’s medical budget goes directly to care. The health crisis has also become a financial crisis, closing off access to supply chain credit. We look at blockchain-based financing solutions such as Chained Finance and fundraising efforts like that of the binance Charity Foundation. Finally, decentralized models of governance such as those created by blockchain startups Abridged and Aragon can transform how NGOs, governments, and communities respond to the crisis.
4. A rapid response registry for medical professionals
Front-line medical professionals are the heroes and our last line of defense. Yet, hospitals can’t onboard people fast enough. This is not for lack of talent; it’s the inability to find those with proper credentials. blockchain platforms such as Dock.io, ProCredEx and Zinc.work help to streamline coordination among different geographies, departments, and certification bodies so that supply and demand for healthcare workers – as well as the process for verifying their skills – becomes more efficient and transparent.
5. Incentive models to reward responsible behavior
People respond to incentives. blockchain serves as a mechanism to synch up the incentives of stakeholder groups around issues and activities, changing patterns of behavior in the process. For example, the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada collaborated with Interac to micro-motivate healthy lifestyles, and Toronto’s University Health Network teamed up with IBM to put control over health records into patients’ hands.
An action plan for the new paradigm
Many of these changes are beyond the timeframe of this round of COVID-19. But many can be implemented quickly.
Governments must wake up to the blockchain opportunity. Every national government should create an emergency task force on medical data to start planning and implementing blockchain initiatives. They can stimulate the development of technology firms working on the solutions described here. They should partner with medical professional associations and other players to implement blockchain credential systems.
We anticipate a real crisis of leadership as the new digital-first and digital-only models conflict with the old industrial tried-and-true.
The private sector affected by COVID-19 must still lead the way. They must start today by incorporating blockchain into their infrastructures. Companies need to continue their work on pilots framed around medical records, credentialing systems, incentive structures and other sovereign identity solutions. When designing these pilots, companies could consider embedding incentive systems for socially responsible behavior.
Emergencies turbocharge the pace of historical progress. Businesses like Zoom, once used mostly by technology companies, have become ubiquitous tools of daily life. Meanwhile, 20th century titans are asking for bailouts. By necessity, human behavior – from where we work and when to how we socialize – changes overnight. Add to this mix the exponential properties of blockchain, and we’re setting ourselves up for a cataclysm of some kind.
We anticipate a real crisis of leadership as the new digital-first and digital-only models conflict with the old industrial tried-and-true. Maybe this awful crisis will call forth a new generation of leaders who can help us finally get the digital age on track? Who among us will step up?

Cleantech Greentech Research and Greening Camps
Greening Deserts sustainable projects like the Greening Camps want to establish innovative developments like Agrophotovoltaik and Energy Storage Parks, Greening Drones and Seeding Balloons, Transparent Solar and Vertical Greenhouses. With the first Greening Camp and adequate fundings all the sustainable developments could finally be accelerated and developed worldwide. The projects were founded and initiated by the Greening Deserts founder. He informed institutions, organisations and even invited governments to join these projects and initiatives, as well as to the Greenhouse Ship, Plastic Fishing and Trillion Trees Initiative. If for example each nation plants approx 2 billion trees, we the humanity could reach the goal to plant one trillion trees very fast and we could really cool down the planet on a large scale. It would also protect and save countless species which are endangered by extinction. There are many campaigns and initiatives in this relation and we all are connected to reach the global goals faster.
The Greening Camp keyplants like bamboo, beans, hemp and sunflowers will improve the soils, underground water and waters. Drylands and wastelands can be turned into fertile lands easily. Hemp improves the soils in just a few years, after this other soil improving plants, environmental friendly crops and trees can be planted. Hemp will be just a side product of the forestation or greening processes, it can be delivered to hemp product producers like the hemp paper branch and hemp wood industry. The Greening Camps will produce millions of tons of hemp. All would win at the end, the poor people or regions, the degraded lands or soils, the forestry, paper and wood industry - even big wood paper consumers like the book, newspaper and packaging industry. Hemp papers and hemp carton packages will save a lot of forests or trees and will reduce deforestation significantly.
Since the last two years the founder informed hundreds of publishers, media companies and paper producers about these facts. Greening Deserts Camp projects and products like Hemp Papers have really big potential to reduce deforestation, land degradation, pollution and wasting resources worldwide. Each camp will have a recycling center and workshop, especially for creative plastic waste recycling and upcycling. Biowaste Management, Greenhouse Management and Water Management will improve soils, air and water quality in all camp areas. Millions of new jobs and whole new markets will be created.
Other main goals in this relation are to bring back biodiversity, typical and rare plants of all concerned region. Seed banks or stores and special greenhouses, botanical gardens or similar habitats for the most endangered species will be established at each camp. Climate protection, conservation, environmental protection and species protection are also main tasks of the camps. Of course, we can not do everything. We will exchange and share a lot with other similar institutions, organisation and projects - like with national parks, game reserves or wildlife preserves.
The Greening Camps will establish green spots, healthy environments and platforms for all regions really need better soils, clean air and fresh water. The camps will be platforms for cleantech, climate protection, conservation, culture, education, environmental protection, greentech and science. All camps will have a library, lounge and media room. Bigger camps will get an Energy Storage Park and even could be expanded to a kind of campus or science park. We exchanged with a lot of institutions about it and many liked the projects. With active, constructive and financial support by the official institutions the camps can be build very fast. We have not much time to reduce desertification, global warming, human-made climate change effects and extreme weather before the biosphere will collapse - responsible bodies and institutions need to act immediately. Many camps could be build in 2020, the case the projects will finally be supported by the African Union, EU and UN. Even refugee camps could have a greening camp area. The founder combined and researched since years much more innovative developments, technics, techniques and products. You can check them on the official project pages.
The planet earth can be cooled with more diverse forests, green and natural landscapes worldwide - especially urban regions which heat up very much each year. Bamboo, hemp wood, rice straw and other sustainable innovative building materials and fuels could reduce deforestation, man-made climate changes and global warming worldwide. The future of real sustainable cities, the energy transition and transport sector is: AI and Cleantech, Energy Efficiency, Green Building, Green IT, Greentech, Sustainable Architecture, Sustainable Living, Sustainable Production, Sustainable Consumption, Sustainable Transport, Sustainable Working, Sustainable Agriculture, Organic Farming, Ecological Forestry - especially in relation to Community Gardening, Hydroponics, Permaculture, Urban Agriculture, Rooftop Greening and Vertical Farming. Not forget to mention Sustainable Aviation, Sustainable Shipping and Sustainable Tourism. All of these areas or topics will also play an important role at the Urban Greening Camps. First camps in this relation are planned for European cities or urban areas and for open pit terrains or surface mining landscapes. Another important issue is the improvement of rainwater usage, establishment of water tanks and reservoirs in urban areas. Good examples you can see in cities like Chicago, Toronto and New York who use water tanks on the roofs. Such water reservoirs are not just good for sustainable irrigation and water supply in dry or hot times, they are also good in emergencies like house fires.
Short Summary:
Greening Deserts projects are cultural, economic, educational, scientific, social and sustainable projects in the field of horticulture, hydroponics, sustainable agriculture and ecological forestry - but also in the fields of clean technology, green technologies and renewable energy such as solar, water and wind energy. Electricity access, availability and reliability together with energy efficiency will be optimized at the greening and research camps. The focus is on education, sustainable developments and scientific research. Conservation, environmental protection and species protection plays a very important role, too. Main goals of the projects are to reduce deforestation, desertification, pollution and global warming on a large scale. Goals are also to improve the energy and food security, to offer innovative management, ecosystem and greening services. The projects will reform the agriculture and forestry with Ecofarming, Ecoforestry and Permaculture methods, technics and techniques. The projects can include each region and nation in the process, especially in relation to Cleantech, Greentech, environmental protection, a real Sustainable Infrastructure and Sustainable Investments - Green Finance and Sustainable Finance. To manage and to share better necessary finances a special Greening Fund will be established together with international financial institutions.
It is a real chance for the world, especially for Africa and Europe to reach faster the Climate Goals and more Sustainable Development Goals together with Greening Deserts international and innovative developments. The future vision is to establish a Greening Campus on all continents and several camps for all regions who need ecological, environmental and sustainable development services, especially in relation to ecosystem restoration and environmental services. Each constructive feedback and real active support is always welcome!
You can read more about all the developments on the official project pages like Agrophotovoltaik, Energy Storage Park, Greening Coasts, Greening Camp, Greening Drone, Greenhouse Ship, Green Ring Africa, Great Green Wall North Africa, Hemp Books, Hemp Papers, Plastic Fishery, Recycling Ship, Rooftop Greening, Seeding Balloon, Transparent Solar, Urban Greening Network, etc..
Climate protection, nature conservation and environmental protection is also species protection. We need more environmental awareness and sustainability, sustainable living and sustainable working, in all fields or areas. We need to create a world of understanding, acceptance, respect, tolerance, compassion and consciousness. - Oliver Gediminas Caplikas
Keynote and Update X:
The maybe most important issue, topic or point is the problem with the daily extinction of the real endangered species and wrong focus or awareness in relation to endangered species in general and most endangered species who really need to be saved - and to reduce or prevent the ongoing mass extinction really effective. It are mainly the most endangered species and keystone species which must be cared more than well known and relative protected species like elephants, hippos, lions, pandas, whales, etc.. Many of the countless programs and resources for mentioned species should be used for the most endanged and keystone species. It makes no sense to protect more and more the well know species and every day dying or even extinct so many other important species. AI, Deep Learning, Supercomputers and intelligent computing systems should be used primarely to find all the most endanged and keystone species who are recorded. Search algorithms and organisations like ACM, MA, Google, Research Gate and Wolfram Alpha should support this actively. International institutions and nations should unite in this relation. It is maybe the most important issue of the world!
We have not much time to establish hundreds of camps, greenhouses and new special areas for this special species protection tasks - on land and at sea - for the most endangered species of this world. The reality is, if the most important species or keystone species like bees extinct or reach a certain low population level (MVP), humanity and much other species depending on them will die out, too. If these most important food or dependency chains and bridges collapse, even if it are relative small or partwise unknown keystone species, it can cause cascade effects similar like in the case of the permafrost problem. No panic, but every day and action in this relation counts. The only way is to unite, to focus on this problem and find fastest solutions. My tipp work out keystone species and priority lists for all the expert workgroups and worldwide institutions like universities and schools - not just in relation to climate protection, environmental or species protection. The media and public should also report mainly about this.
Don't ignore it. Forward and share if you can, it affects us all.

Things to Do Before You Leave Your Home for Vacation
The time is finally here when you have to leave your home for vacations. You’ve reserved your flights, plan your travel and packed your bags. But are you comfortable with the thought of leaving your home alone? Or have you made sure your home will not be affected by your absence?
Your vacations can be spoiled if someone from your neighborhood calls you and inform that strangers are haunting your house or an infected plant is decaying at your home entrance. When you leave your home at your neighbor’s responsibility, you can’t expect 100% safety of your home because if they’ll care for your home then who will take care of their places?
So, it’s you who is responsible for your home while you don’t stay in it. It’s better to make it safe rather than creating chaos during vacations. If you don’t know how to do it, these tips will help you out:
First: Clean Up
If you want to return in a fresh and pleasant home, you have to leave it tidy and decluttered.
The first thing you need to do is to empty your refrigerator so if you powered it off the food doesn’t rot off. Discard the perishable food and if there’s something that will stale with time, do avoid it as well.
Take a round of your toilets and utility rooms and collect all the trash for recycling. Make sure no trash is left out to welcome you from vacations.
If there’s a pile of laundry lying at the corner, finish it up, fold and put it aside. It will help you to get rid of the laundry hassles when you return from vacations.
Make your beds. If the sheets and towels are dirty, wash them and spread a new sheet over your bed.
Empty all trash cans in your home, make sure dishwashing isn’t due and take a round of every corner to see if there’s nothing left to clean.
If you want to return home happy and in a peaceful state, cleanliness is important. Upon reaching your home, you won’t have to worry about cleanliness at first.
Then: Wind Up
Once you’re done cleaning then start winding up the electrical appliances that can increase your electricity bills while you’re away.
Perform routine inspection and suspect if any of the appliances need to repair. Take a look at the heating and cooling system if they’re good to go. Clean your garden, if there are any dead or yellow plants remove them otherwise they will affect the other green plants.
Unplug all electrical appliances, plug out the mobile chargers and turn off the sockets. It will prevent short circuits and unwanted use of electricity.
Prepare your home for the fire emergency. If in case it happens, smoke detectors can find out and tackle it safely.
Turn off the water valve from the main switch to prevent water burst or water heater malfunction.
Let your closet doors slightly open to prevent the smell from building up.
If you’ve just shifted into a new condo then you’ll be only responsible to pack your condo. The amenities are already the responsibility of the Condo Association Board.
Don’t Forget: Security
Do you know the thieves are haunting your homes when you are not staying in it? A large number of robbery is reported in Toronto during the summer vacations. So, it’s the most important thing you need to take care of.
Seal the windows and leave no space open for thieves to jump in.
Open the video surveillance and keep a check on it through your smartphone.
Give a spare key of your homes to your trusted friend or neighbors so if there’s any issue while you’re enjoying vacations, they can address it.
Keep the pet sign on your home entrance so robbers think before entering your home. A board always work in this case.
Keep the outdoor light open. A good tip is to use smart light that can detect the dark and automatically light up. This will let the robbers know that someone is staying at your home.
Preparing before you leave your home is necessary. It will add in having a stress-free vacation and will earn you the peace of mind when you return home. For more info click here.

How to Get More Results Out of Your dental implants Toronto
HISTORY OF DENTURES
Sets of dentures have actually been discovered dating from the 15th century and most likely existed prior to that time. Carved from bone or ivory, or made up of teeth from dead or living donors, these dentures were uncomfortable and decomposed after extended use. The first porcelain dentures were made around 1770 by Alexis Duchateau. In 1791 the very first Britishpatent was given to Nicholas Dubois De Chemant, formerly assistant to Duchateau. De Chemant's patent specification said (in part): "A composition for the function of making of synthetic teeth either single double or in rows or in complete sets and also springs for securing or attaching the very same in a more easy and effective manner than any hitherto found which said teeth might be made from any shade or color, which they will maintain for any length of time and will consequently more perfectly resemble the natural teeth." He began selling his dentures in 1792 with the majority of his porcelain paste supplied by Wedgwood. Single teeth in porcelain were made from 1808. Later on, dentures were made of vulcanite and then, in the 20th century, acrylic resin and other plastics. In denturesdirect.ca Britain in 1968 79% of those aged 65-74 had no natural teeth, by 1998 this proportion had fallen to 36%.
There are lots of accounts of scavengers who, in ancient times, after hand-to-hand battles, browsed the battlefields and got rid of healthy teeth from dead warrior's mouths and after that offered those teeth to local dental professionals who created methods to make the "recycled" teeth into brand-new dentures for their clients.
GEORGE WASHINGTON
In addition, there are legends about George Washington and his problems with dentures. Legends say he first had a local wood carver make him set of oak dentures, later, we are told, he had numerous other dentures carved out of elephant tusk ivory.
TECHNICAL INFORMATION
What follows is a technical explanation about dentures, or, more precisely, detachable total dentures, also called full-mouth incorrect teeth. A denture is utilized when a client has no teeth left on the mandibular arch, the maxillary arch, or both. Patients can end up being completely edentulous (without teeth) either due to ineffective oral health or injury. Removable total dentures, can help provide the edentulous patient better masticator (chewing) capabilities, along with improve the esthetic appeal of their lips in specific and the entire face in general.
Removable partial dentures are for patients who are missing out on only some of their teeth on a specific arch. Fixed partial dentures, much better known as crowns and bridges , are also for clients missing just a few of their teeth, however these are more expensive than detachable devices, and they have some unique constraints in particular particular instances.
PROBLEMS WITH COMPLETE DENTURES
Issues with dentures consist of that patients are not used to having something in their mouth that is not food. The brain senses this appliance as "food" and sends out messages to the salivary glands to produce more saliva and to produce it at a greater rate. New dentures will likewise be the inevitable cause of sore spots as they press and rub on the mucosa. A couple of denture modifications during the weeks following removal of natural teeth and insertion of the dentures can look after this concern. Gagging is another issue come across by some clients. Sometimes, this might be because of a denture that is too loose fitting, too thick or not extended far enough posteriorly onto the soft palate. Sometimes, gagging might also be attributed to mental rejection of the denture. Mental gagging is the most tough to treat given that it runs out the dental professionals' control. In such cases, an implant supported palate-less denture might need to be built or a hypnotherapist may need to be spoken with.
Another issue with dentures is keeping them in place. There are 3 rules governing the presence of removable oral appliances: retention, support and stability .
SUPPORT
Support is the principle that describes how well the underlying mucosa (oral tissues, including gums and the vestibules) keeps the denture from relocating the vertical airplane towards the arch in question, and hence being excessively depressed and moving deeper into the arch. For the mandibular arch, this function is provided by the gingival (gums) and the buccal vestibule (valley area in between the gums and the lip), whereas in the maxillary arch, the palate participates to help support the denture. The bigger the denture flanges (the part of the denture that extends into the vestibule), the better the assistance.
More just recently, there has been a transfer to increase denture stability with implants. When pressure is applied to alveolar bone bereft of teeth (alveolar bone is the bone in which natural teeth generally live). The bone reacts to this pressure by re-sorbing. After several years of denture wearing, the ridges upon which the dentures rest degrade and can quickly all but vanish. The insertion of implants into the bone listed below the dentures can help to seriously fight this unfortunate incident. The implants are tactically placed to bear the brunt of the pressure when the denture is utilized for chewing, thus keeping the bone from dissolving. When implants are incorporated into the treatment, the denture is now described as being an implant supported over-denture and the implants are referred to as over- denture abutments.
STABILITY
Stability is the principle that describes how well the denture base is prevented from moving in the horizontal plane, and thus from moving side-to-side or front and back. The more the denture base (pink product) runs in smoother and constant contact with the edentulous ridge (the hill upon which the teeth utilized to live, but now consists of only recurring alveolar bone with overlying mucosa), the better the stability. Obviously, the higher and wider the ridge, the much better the stability will be, however this is typically simply a outcome of patient anatomy, barring surgical intervention (bone grafts, etc.).
RETENTION
Retention is the concept that explains how well the denture is prevented from moving in the vertical airplane in the opposite instructions of insertion The better the topographical mimicry of the intaglio (interior) surface area of the underlying mucosa, the much better the retention will be (in removable partial dentures, the clasps are a big time provider of retention), The surface area stress, suction and just plain old friction will help in keeping the denture base from breaking intimate contact with the mucosal surface area. It is very important to keep in mind that the most crucial component in the retentive style of a full maxillary denture is a total and overall border seal in order to attain "suction." The border seal is made up of the edges of the lateral and anterior elements and the posterior palatal seal. Covering the whole difficult taste buds and extending beyond and ending onto the soft palate accomplish the posterior palatal seal design.
As discussed above, implant innovation can significantly enhance the patient's denture-wearing experience by increasing stability and conserving his or her bone from using away. Rather of simply placing the implants to serve as blocking system versus the denture pushing on the alveolar bone, small retentive devices can be connected to the implants that can then snap into a modified denture base to permit for enormously increased retention.
CONCLUSION
This is since the best the dental professional can do is make the upper denture to work in consistency with the lower denture when the client is at rest. During chewing, the denture bases will in some cases act as Class I levers, and when the patient bites down on the denture's anterior, or front teeth, the posterior, or rear, denture teeth are bound to move away from the ridge.
The ideals of denture design will have it that the intaglio surface is in best, intimate contact with the ridge and the margins of the denture base will create a perfect suction seal (the seal is in fact only on the maxillary denture), perfects are hardly ever if ever met in this imperfect world, and thus some movement is to be expected. Denture adhesive can then be made use of to contend against the forces attempting to pull the denture base away from the mucosa. In a ideal world, a client with a best edentulous ridge and with a completely fitting denture would need no adhesive Then the actual type of the denture base should operate in tandem with the three concepts pointed out above, therefore preventing motion in anyway, shape or kind.
Retention is the concept that describes how well the denture is prevented from moving in the vertical airplane in the opposite direction of insertion The better the topographical mimicry of the intaglio (interior) surface area of the underlying mucosa, the better the retention will be (in removable partial dentures, the clasps are a huge time supplier of retention), The surface tension, suction and just plain old friction will aid in keeping the denture base from breaking intimate contact with the mucosal surface. Rather of simply putting the implants to serve as blocking system against the denture pushing on the alveolar bone, little absorbent home appliances can be connected to the implants that can then snap into a modified denture base to enable for greatly increased retention. Throughout chewing, the denture bases will often act as Class I levers, and when the patient bites down on the denture's anterior, or front teeth, the posterior, or rear, denture teeth are bound to move away from the ridge.
The perfects of denture style will have it that the intaglio surface is in perfect, intimate contact with the ridge and the margins of the denture base will produce a perfect suction seal (the seal is really only on the maxillary denture), suitables are rarely if ever satisfied in this imperfect world, and therefore some movement is to be expected. In a perfect world, a client with a ideal edentulous ridge and with a completely fitting denture would need no adhesive Then the actual form of the denture base should work in tandem with the three principles discussed above, hence preventing motion in anyhow, shape or kind.

The combination of holiday best shapewear giving and end-of-year tax benefits create a perfect opportunity for many donors to contribute their vehicle to charity. Most charitable car donations are processed by a broker working on behalf of the target charity who recycles the donated vehicle. So in addition to the tax and charitable benefits of donating a car, there is also a green impact of donating a car or truck to charity. One of the benefits of giving an automobile to charity is that any vehicle, running or not, can easily be converted into cash by the receiving charity. Thus the charity can easily use the proceeds from the vehicle to advance the charity's primary mission. Contrast this to clothing donations, or gifts of other household items, which are not Maternity Shapewear easily convertible to cash, and you can see why most charities have no desire for most household items when their primary purpose may be researching cancer or conducting dentistry in the third world.Automotive recyclers make the transition from beat up old car to cash possible for most charities. For example, the local food bank does not run a use car lot or wrecking yard. So the food bank and most other charities rely on automotive recyclers that have the liquidity to pay cash for the vehicle without seeing it, provide a tow service free of charge and then provide environmentally compliant storage for the vehicle until it is ultimately recycled into scrap metal. What makes this process exciting beyond the washer dryer clearance initial satisfaction of supporting charitable work is knowing that these older vehicles are, on average, less fuel efficient than newer offerings. Therefore, getting these older vehicles off the road contributes to a net reduction in green house gasses. Recycling will also put the steel, aluminum and copper from the vehicle back into the industrial manufacturing process with very little waste from the vehicle going into a landfill. All fluids from the vehicle will be captured and stored according to OSHA and EPA requirements with the old oil and transmission fluid also being recycled. This December is an ideal time to consider a gift to a charity of your choice. Giving a vehicle is a great way to advance the mission of your preferred charity. It provides the charity a quick source of cash. It is an encouraged form of giving by the IRS. The IRS provides very clear guidance for anyone wanting to donate car to charity in a appliances houston brochure (download pub 4303) available from the IRS website. Finally, and perhaps best of all, donating a vehicle to charity helps and protects our environment at the same time. The move toward lighter, renewable, and stronger metals has led many companies to turn away from the trusted steel to new metal- magnesium. Magnesium alloys have been around for quite some time and has always had a supporting role within the world's most vital machines. Within the last ten years, as the price of gas, environmental awareness and consumer safety concerns have increased, so has the need for a drastic change in the design of many items to appease the masses. Government policy changes have added to the urgency. The result is the increased interest in magnesium alloys, which is the answer to current manufacturing needs. Aviation Losing weight on airplanes is car dealerships in houston important for the fuel economy. Actually, the usage of magnesium for airline construction isn't new. It was used in airplane manufacturing through the 1950's but was phased out because of concerns over flammability and corrosion. However, it is back today, in the form of a sheet. The return was made possible by improved magnesium alloy processing. The treatment used on the alloy's surface also alleviated the corrosion concerns. The sheets are being used more and more in construction of aerospace vehicles to also create designs that are more aerodynamic, thanks to the lighter materials. Automotive Magnesium has been used in automotive engines for some time. As the need for more fuel-efficient cars rises, so does that search for ways to replace the heaviest parts of the car with lighter materials. A perfect case is the Ford 150 truck. For years, the truck was touted as made tough, of steel. The US government then enacted a law requiring all new light trucks to have fuel economy of 30 miles per hour by 2016. Combined with high gas prices and an increased demand for smart fuel-efficient cars, the law could have been the death knell for the once popular luxury cars houston truck. Instead, the company began using magnesium alloys in the design of the Ford F150, starting in 2010, replacing much of the steel construction. The current frame of the truck is made completely of magnesium alloy.Magnesium is found within the body naturally, so using the metal alloy for implants and stents in medicine is advantageous. It limits the rejection rates, dissolves so the implants aren't permanent, and are lightweight without sacrificing the strength needed in order support the body or blood flow.Laptops are on the leading edge of magnesium use in construction. New slimmer, lighter laptops are more easily constructed using magnesium alloys than the traditional plastics and metals. Asus introduced an extra slim laptop, the U36, to rival one brought on the market by Apple in 2010. The durability of the alloy was another selling point for consumers.Keep an eye out for magnesium alloy use in more and more products. The metal is plentiful, renewable, and rival to the aluminum and steel alloys in its strength to weight ratio. All of these quality factors translate to more durable Houston SEO Expert eco-friendly products for consumers. Beat your winter driving anxieties. Snow storms, Black ice other drivers on road and sudden loss over the controls of your car are all known fears, but you can overcome them by paying attention to some basic driving tips available on some automotive websites. Alternatively, you can benefit from auto dealer marketing expert's opinion.Every year, winter driving has various ugly surprises. According to some, driving on snowy or icy roads is a source for apprehension and also a reason of stress. Thick ice, loss of vehicle control, other drivers alongside, and snow storms are the four chief worries recognized by people living in such places. To provide you a little insight into such issues and let you to take advantage from the skill of a pro, let us see what Richard Spénard, professional race car driver and driving instructor, has to share from his experience. He explains some straightforward, helpful means to tackle these four main driving problems this winter. That slight layer of invisible ice just cannot be seen on the road that is why it is undeniably the most threatening surface. So cut speed while testing your vehicle's braking efficiency by pressing your feet slightly against the brakes to see their effect and the grip of your tires. That is how you will be conscious of the SEO Company Toronto driving path and would not be caught by surprise. When you have the trouble to lose control of your car, place your foot on the brake till the car comes to a complete halt. Be calm and pull your car out of the path to prevent any possibility of being crushed by nearby cars. Never move your vehicle off the road. In case some car just ahead of you loses control, instead of looking at that car, apply brakes while concentrating on where you can to steer your car. Pre-planning and good vision are your perfect allies! Some people consider themselves experts at winter driving so watch out because nobody is completely secure from hazardous weather and varying road conditions. Watch out for other drivers. Be on your guard, slow down, and maintain a safe longer distance between your car and the one in front of you. There is nothing better than preparing your car for worst case scenario. Follow the habit of checking weather predictions before turning on ignition and delaying or moving up your leaving time depending on the forecast. Additionally, arrange a disaster kit having a blanket, flashlight, matches, mittens and other stuff that might be of any use. Bear in mind that it is vital to plan vigilantly for every trip and to get rid of all the snow from your automobile to make certain what career is right for me utmost road visibility. Normally I would be discussing RV antifreeze used to protect the water system in your RV or boat from freezing, but today I want to talk briefly about automotive antifreeze. If I were the CEO of an automotive antifreeze company my entire focus would be on the need to regularly flush the coolant system and add new antifreeze to the vehicle cooling system. I would do this for two reasons. 1) From a business standpoint I would do it to increase revenue. The average consumer doesn't relate changing antifreeze in their vehicles like they relate to changing the engine oil on a regular basis. If they were educated on the benefits of changing the antifreeze in their vehicles my company profits would soar. 2) The coolant system of any vehicle performs a very important job; to prevent the heat producing engine from overheating and quite possibly seizing up. When you don't flush and replace the antifreeze periodically rust, scale and corrosion can build up in the radiator and engine coolant passages, and eventually result in business analyst certification an overheated engine. Let's talk a minute about what a vehicle coolant system is intended to do. First of all, if an engine did not have methods for transferring the heat that is produced through combustion and friction the hot metal parts would melt down and seize up. Heat that the engine produces is basically removed through the exhaust system and used appliances houston through the cooling system. All heat producing sections of an internal combustion engine need to be cooled, including the combustion chamber, heads, cylinder walls and the engine block itself. The way this is done is by circulating coolant around these heat producing areas of the engine. The coolant picks the heat up and releases much of it as it circulates through the vehicles radiator. Water does a good job helping to cool an engine but it has some drawbacks. Most importantly it freezes quickly during cold winter temperatures. Water can also cause certain metals to rust and corrode over time. This is why the water in a vehicle cooling system early childhood development is mixed with what we refer to as antifreeze. Glycol antifreeze does several things to help your engine: 1) It helps to lower the freezing point of water. 2) The corrosion inhibitors that are added help prevent scale and rust build-up in the cooling system. 3) It provides protection against boiling in the hot summer months. 4) Antifreeze helps keep the engine operating at its most efficient temperature regardless of operating conditions and outside temperatures. When we don't flush and replace the antifreeze at recommended intervals these chemicals start to break down and cannot perform the job as effectively as new antifreeze can. Just like used engine oil breaks down and needs to be replaced for maximum lubrication and cooling performance. How many of you have ever witnessed a vehicle sitting along the side of a road with steam billowing out of the engine compartment from overheating? I cannot count the number of times I have seen this. Many times the cause is due to the failure of a part within the cooling system. If a radiator hose, heater hose, water pump, thermostat or technical schools near me fan belt fails the result is an overheated engine. Or, if the coolant system hasn't been flushed and the antifreeze replaced for several years the result is an overheated engine. The bottom line is periodic inspections of the cooling system components, and flushing and replacing antifreeze at recommended intervals will add years of life to A+ certification training the vehicles engine and prevent untimely breakdowns. Keep in mind that glycol antifreeze is poisonous to humans and pets and that it needs to be disposed of properly. You should follow the guidelines in your vehicle owner's manual for flushing and replacing antifreeze and make sure you are using the proper type of plus size shapewear antifreeze recommended for your particular vehicle.
