This is Crown Hill, I've shared pictures of this neighborhood in the past because it's my favorite neighborhood in the city! Most of these houses were build around 1850 and many are on the National Register of Historic Places.

This amount of time
Tumblr media
It's been 10 years since i began the Self-Surveillance project, and a lot has happened in the meantime... a lot in the work (both major and minor), personally two multi-state home moves, and plenty more.
I want to reflect on the project as i conceived it, as it has developed and as it is now. It's taken some twists and turns, developing offshoots and tangents that have been very fruitful in some cases. One of the main aspects i want to think about from the beginning (and even before i created the first proper SS work in 2013-14) is that in the initial conception this project was meant to be about my family. At that time i was still strongly motivated by a desire to make work that was not about myself and my identity, but my family was another story and another place (or places). The work has developed largely in this way, and i've been able to explore areas very unfamiliar to me.
I don't think this work is by any means done or exhausted, but as usual it's hard for me to locate where i am with it; by this i mean both the stage the project is currently in, and also where "I" am "in it". While i still think the latter aspect is of lesser importance, i am making progress with it, and this has importance in plotting the relationship connections which have meaning and relevance for the work. One thing that has animated and motivated my directions with the work has been the contradictions that i see in my family, particularly across different branches, and how they seem (solely from my perspective) to have coalesced into how i have formed.
I think most people, in being able to look at parts of their family going back generations (as I am very fortunate to be able), would find some contradiction or paradox, something that is difficult to rectify either personally or historically. For my work, i hope to explore these contradictions and not to flatten them, to see the complexities, particularly because they are both personal and historical (and i hope i'm being successful at this). Maybe because of this, i think there could be relevance for the future, in the difficult labyrinth we have to navigate in order to get there.
Now, i am preparing new work for a solo show, and this will be my first installation work in 5 years. I'm hoping that the development of this work for the SS project will reflect a lot of what has come before, and also an evolution into new areas of possibility. As i have experienced in the past with making installation work, this can go far in suggesting new ways of working, methods and relationships with the audience. I hope that this will be the case again in the next few months. While i do hope that at the center this current work reflects the place from which it has developed, and that in some ways it carries (and moves me) forward, i also hope that the work can be something, or somehow, good in the world.

Here’s the thing I need people to understand:
Even if we believe that the (entirely unproven and far too politically convenient) pre-contract story between Edward IV and Eleanor Talbot was true, it doesn’t actually matter. Even if it was hypothetically true, there was still no reason why Edward V – who was already King at that point and was referred to as such – couldn’t have been able to succeed his father regardless.
David Horspool (Richard's own historian) summarizes it better than I could, so I’m just quoting him here:
"[Richard also made] no allowance for any potential solution to the problem that might have re-legitimized Edward V and his siblings. These included securing a retrospective canonical or papal judgement of the invalidity of the pre-contract; an Act of Parliament legitimizing the children of Edward and Elizabeth Woodville’s marriage, as happened to Henry VIII’s variously tainted offspring; or even ignoring the issue and proceeding to the coronation of Edward V, which would legitimize him by making him the Lord’s anointed, and render allegations of his bastardy as newer versions of the old tittle-tattle about his father."
In short, even if Edward IV truly had a pre-contract with Eleanor Talbot, and even if all of his children with Elizabeth Woodville were supposedly illegitimate, it should by no means prevent Edward V from succeeding his father to the throne. If Richard truly wanted to support his nephew, he had a variety of useful and entirely workeable options to choose from. Instead, he officially declared his nieces and nephews (including a literal 3-year-old) illegitimate, kept Edward V and his even younger brother confined in the Tower of London, and declared himself King.
Why didn't Richard take these actions, all of which he would have been well aware of? As Horspool says simply: "that Richard took none of these courses was because he had no interest in doing so."
The ONLY conclusion we can come to based on Richard's actions is summarized most succinctly by A.J Pollard:
"The truth of the matter is that Richard III did not want Edward V to be legitimate because he did not want him to be king."

Folks. Once again I come asking for help with my quest for a particular picture that I'm sure I originally saw on Tumblr.
The photo showed a person wearing a bear costume (similar to the one shown here). They are standing on a sidewalk in front of a small, white church, with a wooden cross in its front yard. They are holding a portable television.
Something about the scene reminded me of Seattle, where i lived in the mid '80s. A street sign was visible in the photo. After some searching I was able to confirm the location of the church. That was the end of it.
Now I am back in Seattle after many decades. I began thinking about that picture, and that it might be fun to visit the spot. But I couldn't remember it. And I can't find the original photo anywhere, either on Tumblr or the web at large.
After exhaustive searching on Google Maps, I am now 99% certain that the original location is what is shown in the first two photos above. It is currently called Trinity United Methodist Church. Some years back it was called Crown Hill United Methodist Church. The address is 8500 14th Avenue NW, Seattle. It is located in the Ballard neighborhood.
If anyone knows of the original photo, please let me know. Thanks.

“Don’t make me have to go over the code again.” Maya shook her head, fastening a pin on the lapel of his jacket. One he refused to put on prior to this event. Any and everything to go against the grain, he’s a bit a nuisance. Understandably so if she had to really think deeper on what’s expected of him. It hardly matters when his entire family is of a caliber most would dream to uphold. Maya’s not someone who wants to be in their shoes. She’s someone who has been part of this family for long enough to know her role. Right now she has the ‘wonderful’ job of making sure a prince behaves. A grown man who can’t listen? Just her lucky day to deal with naturally; she stepped back, turning to grab her purse.
“The code or the strict authority passed down from out of touch leadership?” Landon’s question came with its own bite. Not so much as her as it is the entire façade. He has to appear out of courtesy or it’ll look bad. Upon a common wealth of people who put too much faith in something that doesn’t carry weight in the modern age. He’s said it before. No one likes to listen to the truth. Nor does he want to continue to pretend he wants to be here.
Banquet events, balls and commemorative affairs; he shook his head, fixing one of his cuff links as Maya acted as ‘lady in waiting.’ Something he knows his grandmother would call it despite the fact it makes no sense. Last time he looked in the mirror he wasn’t a woman. Maya is his assistant, his secretary for all intents and purposes. A title hardly befits her true role in maintaining what’s expected. She’s important enough to get a better pay grade he’s sure.
“At least I can drink. Considering this isn’t solely state and monarchy.” There are all types of figures present. Even famous people, celebrities and those are the ones he’d rather get all the media attention.
“Try to keep it minimal,” she warned him, raising an eyebrow. “The press is everywhere. And I really don’t want to explain to your uncle.”
“Funny how it falls on Ethan,” Landon dropped arms to his sides, finished fiddling with everything. Sometimes he would like to go out and not have to wear pins, medals of valor. “What? Is my father too busy with his French debutante?”
Maya’s eyes narrowed, jabbing a finger at him. “Don’t. Start.”
“Sure. The old man’s having the time of his life. Who am I to say anything?” Bitterness edged his tone. Unpleasant viewpoint but whatever gets out into the world won’t come from him. Interesting how he has to be the epitome of royal excellence with their track record for scandal. Involving his mother years before but Landon keeps his animosity in check. After all these years he knows how to play the game. Not giving her a chance to respond or lecture him, Landon walked out of the hotel room. Event catering orchestrated inside the Ritz, which he smoothly entered as the elevator pinged on the lower conference floor. His lips upturned in a smile as he received looks. One in particular he was told to make an impression with. A princess from Thailand, which begs the question why the hell he needed to go overboard with pleasantries but as they say: it’s show time.
“Your royal highness,” a man bowed his head, side stepping to keep pace. “I am to entertain you with the presence of Princess Stefani.”
“Oh? Well, I’m here to entertain myself with a drink.” His remark came as a tray passed him by, prompting him to pick up a glass of champagne. Causing a cough from the man beside him, Landon’s eyes flickered across the many faces in attendance, casually falling to a recognizable blonde.

Round 1, Side B: Silent Hill 2 (2001) vs Fire Emblem: Awakening (2012)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Silent Hill | Fire Emblem
Campaigns under the cut!
Campaign for Silent Hill:
Akira Yamaoka makes such excellent use of samples throughout the soundtrack to the point where you would have never even known he did unless you listen in very closely. We got some of the most iconic tracks like the Day of Night, Promise (Reprise) or Null Moon on the track listing. Not all the soundtracks are haunting and mellow, sometimes it's broken up by absolutely dreadful tracks like Ashes and Ghost with its suspenseful fast paced drum beats and an eerie absence of instruments otherwise. Listen I think the Silent Hill 2 soundtrack overall has just done more for us as a society and is just more iconic. Silent Hill 2 SWEEP
Campaign for Fire Emblem:
Don't Speak Her Name is incredible even as a standalone composition, but it's truly fucking magical as an example of video game music. There's other pieces in the OST obviously but I've been obsessed with Don't Speak Her Name for about a decade now. Some context: FE Awakening (aka FE13) is a turn based JRPG, and in terms of combat music, there's two tracks for most pieces - one that plays when you're zoomed out and seeing the chess-like overview of the map, and an embellished version that is seamlessly transitioned into and out of when your units make an attack and the camera zooms in on them. (It's a little hard to explain in words, so if you're curious you can look up a gameplay video.) There's also a third track that plays whenever it's the enemy's turn. Story spoilers here on out! The ruling queen of the kingdom you're fighting for is taken hostage by the enemy kingdom, whose king demands the Fire Emblem (important macguffin) in exchange for her. The queen instead jumps off a cliff, becoming a martyr to both her kingdom and the enemy kingdom. In the fight afterwards, Don't Speak Her Name is the track that plays for the entire fight - while you're zoomed out, while you're zoomed in, and even on the enemy's turn, because the enemy is just as reluctant to fight as you are. The title of the track comes from the protagonist of the game, the queen's brother, who is furious at the enemy commander for talking about his sister. I can't do the moment justice by just describing it - Don't Speak Her Name is so fucking good in and of itself, but I also think it's a superb example of the narrative power music can wield AND an example of the unique way games, as an interactive medium, can exploit the intersection of mechanical-musical structure to enhance their narratives. FE13 sets up the expectation of out-of-combat + in-combat + enemy turn tracks, so when Don't Speak Her Name breaks that expectation it communicates something. So so cool.
