I feel like computer science has one of the the largest gaps between its teachers and its student of any field I've seen. Like undergrad physics majors are basically baby physicists, they do heavy derivations and like math and want to understand the world from first principles. Undergrad mathematicians are learning to care about rigor and build things up from first principles. Undergrad engineers have the same kind of pragmatic focus on efficiency that seasoned engineers do.
CS professors are either mathematicians or hacker/engineer types, and undergrad CS majors largely seem to be codemonkeys in training who are scared of math. Like it is so bizarre to me that we have people doing foundational work in logic and proof theory teaching classes to people who get scared when they see an inequality and want to cash out and write Javascript for 6 figures. What even is this field?

playing with the idea of making a YouTube channel where I explain different things in theoretical comp sci / some of the more mathematical and abstract aspects of what I work with
there’s no solid plans but I’m just looking for things that people might be interested in learning more about? I have a half script in my head about pseudorandom numbers (what they are, what is true randomness, what a distinguished is, some implications about derandomization)
would probably explain some more Turing Machine things, computational complexity classes, maybe go into some more details about things like Cook-Levin (big foundational NP-Complete paper)
As for intended audience … not really sure? I want to break things down into basic terms, so that anyone who is generally interested in the ideas has a starting point?
So help me out maybe, what about theoretical cs would you want to hear more about?

Genuine question: How does one get good at programming? Like I’m good at math, I know basic C# more or less and I get a lot of the core concepts, but I can’t imagine what it’s even like to be proficient at this stuff. Is there a point where you just “get it”, or do you just have to keep googling why your script isn’t working over and over until you die?
There isn't really any one generalized "programming skill" - it's possible to have a lot of computer science understanding but be completely unable to accomplish specific tasks, or to get very good at accomplishing specific tasks without any real computer science understanding
In college I took a number of CS classes that were mostly language agnostic focusing on broad topics like asymptotic analysis, data structures and algorithms, recursion, and reading/understanding code (and more specific stuff about memory management/how computers work etc)
This core foundation has been very useful to me, but it's worth noting that at the time I graduated college I wasn't really "good at programming" in any meaningful sense - if you asked me to accomplish an actual concrete, useful task, I would've struggled quite a bit!
So how do you get good at accomplishing tasks? Same as anything else, spend a lot of time doing similar things and (ideally) expand your skillset over time. It helps a lot to have a programming job, both because it means you spend all day doing this kind of thing and because you're surrounded by (ideally) good code/tools and people who are more experienced than you

A primer on the job system in Celestial Solstice, and a deep dive into basic jobs
One of the main design foci that I've kept in mind while developing CS is that character customization is REALLY important. Combining your various PCs and recruited NPCs into units which utilize their strengths and specialties is one of the most important aspects of gameplay, so having a character creation and advancement system that allows for a lot of customization has been a priority. There are a lot of things I'd like to talk about concerning the character advancement options, but lets stick with jobs today, and more specifically the foundational level of the job system, the basic job.
The closest thing you'll find to a class system here are Jobs. A character can have three jobs, one each from the eight basic, twelve advanced, and twelve master jobs I've made so far. You can make characters that feel and play wildly differently just by picking different job combos which I've had fun playing around with so far. The first job tier, basic jobs, work just a touch differently than advanced and master jobs:
Every character begins play with a basic job but must purchase advanced and master jobs later using EXP.
Basic jobs grant the character weapon and armor training whereas advanced and master jobs have weapon and armor training requirements before they can be acquired.
Each job grants two features, and one of the features granted by basic jobs is an EXP feature. This feature gives the character an extra way in which they can gain EXP above and beyond the regular EXP the entire party will be getting for overcoming various challenges. This gives the player an incentive to interact with the world in a way that is appropriate for their character because it makes perfect sense for the explorer to say "we can't move on yet, I haven't finished mapping the area!" or for the soldier to want to solve problems with their sword arm. This bonus experience is all at the discretion of the keeper so at any time they can say no if a player is hurting the gameplay experience to try to break the system in some way.
There are currently eight basic jobs but I find myself adding more and more as time goes on. At first there were only three, the soldier, the magician, and the scoundrel, but I just couldn't get them to offer the flexibility that I wanted and the option expansion began as playstyle offerings did. The current eight each act as the base for a playstyle: the Charmer for social gameplay, the Craftsman for crafting, the Explorer for wilderness travel, the Gatherer for gathering, the Magician for magic, the Ranger for ranged combat, the Scoundrel for roguish types, and the Soldier for melee combat. Lets go over each one a bit more fully. Don't worry, there isn't a whole lot to each of them so this shouldn't be TOO long. Let's go!
The Charmer
Beauties and silver-tongued snakes who know how to ply their skills to their own benefit. Rely on talking their way out of trouble, or courting allies able to deal with the fallout of a failed parley. Invests heavily in the charm attribute.
Training Granted
Dagger
Longsword
Choose one - Leather armor - Padded armor
Features Granted
Smooth Talker Before a character interacting with the charmer makes a reaction test, the charmer rolls a d4. That character's reaction modifier is increased by an amount equal to the roll. This die increases by one step whenever your renown tier increases up to a d12 at tier V.
Professional Panderer Whenever the charmer successfully passes a charm test or increases another character's attitude toward them, they gain 1 EXP.
The Craftsman
Talented craftsmen who can turn raw materials into any variety of useful things. Poor combatants but not totally helpless. Invests in the brawn and acumen attributes.
Training Granted
Dagger
Hammer
Choose one - Leather armor and round shield - Chain armor
Features Granted
Efficiency Expert Once each day when the craftsman creates an item using a crafting skill, they may roll a d12. If they roll below their acumen score, they retain the raw materials that would have been used in the item’s creation.
Maker Whenever the craftsman spend 6 or more hours creating an item using a crafting skill, they gain 1 EXP per item tier of the final product up to 5 EXP at tier V.
The Explorer
Skilled survivalists with knowledge of the world outside the city's walls. Passable if not skilled in both ranged and melee roles. Invests in the acumen and luck attributes.
Training Granted
Whip
Crossbow
Choose one - Leather armor - Padded armor
Features Granted
Capable Guide The explorer rolls an additional d4 when making travel tests. They may also spend the day assisting another guide. When they do, that character rolls an additional d4 when making travel tests. These dice increase by one step when your renown tier increases, up to d12 at tier V.
Pathfinder Whenever the explorer scribes a map of a segment they’ve never mapped or sell a map of a segment for the first time they gain 1 EXP.
The Gatherer
Those with a knack for finding and collecting raw materials gravitate toward this job. Generally rely on others when presented with hostilities. Invests in the luck attribute, alongside either brawn or finesse.
Training Granted
Spear
Staff
Choose one - Hide armor - Padded armor
Features Granted
Gathering Specialty The gatherer must choose a gathering specialty when they gain this job: Either forestry, herbalism, mining, or skinning. Raw materials gathered using that skill take up no capacity slots in the gatherer's inventory.
Gathering Satisfaction Whenever the gatherer successfully gathers a resource from a segment or elsewhere at the keeper's discretion, they gain 1 exp for each tier of the gathered resource up to 5 EXP at tier V.
The Magician
Practitioners of the magical arts, only just now beginning to master their craft. Often the first step for both arcane and theurgical casters. Invests heavily in the acumen attribute.
Training Granted
Choose two - Chime - Puppet - Staff - Tome - Wand
Choose one - Mesh armor - Paper armor - Robes
Features Granted
Magical Empowerment Once during a battle when the magician casts a spell, they can choose to empower it. The magician must choose attack or effect. If they empower attack, they may re-roll one of the spell's to-hit dice. If they choose effect, they may re-roll one of the dice associated with the spell's effect. The magician must use the re-roll even if the result is lower than the original roll.
Natural Arcanist The magician may purchase spells with the [basic] tag and begins play with two such spells. Additionally, Whenever the magician purchases a spell using EXP, they decrease the spell's EXP cost by 1 to a minimum of 1.
The Ranger
Experienced outdoorsmen and skilled in the use of ranged weaponry. Best kept to the rear of a unit, away from the front lines. Invests heavily in the finesse attribute.
Training Granted
Bow
Crossbow
Javelin
Choose one - Hide armor - Leather armor
Features Granted
Deep Quiver Whenever the ranger tests an ammunition source such as arrows, the resource is only reduced on a roll of 1.
Knowledgeable Naturalist Whenever the ranger spends a day foraging in a segment, they gain EXP depending on the size of the forage die gathered; 1 EXP for d4, 2 for d6, up to 5 at d12.
The Scoundrel
Defined by bravado and backed up by raw talent. Capable archers and able to deftly dodge attacks in melee. Invests in the finesse attribute alongside either charm or luck.
Training Granted
Choose three - Bow - Dagger - Handaxe - Mace - Push-knife
Leather armor
Features Granted
Flanking When the scoundrel enters battle, they may make a Finesse + Luck test against the enemy unit’s escape test. On a success, they gain the Flanking condition until the end of battle. While flanking, a character gets a d4 bonus on to-hit tests and to-hit tests against them get a d4 penalty. These dice increase by one step when renown tier increases, up to d12 at tier V.
Learn by Doing Whenever the scoundrel rolls a test outside of battle, they gain 1 EXP fragment. The scoundrel may exchange 5 EXP fragments when they break camp to gain 1 EXP.
The Soldier
Armed and armored, prepared to both take and dish out hits. Most effective on the front lines where their armor can absorb the most damage. Invests heavily in the brawn attribute.
Training Granted
Choose one - Dagger - Longsword - Greatsword
Choose one - Handaxe - Battleaxe - Greataxe
Choose one - Club - Warhammer - Greathammer
Choose one - Spear - Halberd - Pike
Round Shield
Features Granted
Tireless The soldier treats fatigue as if they have 1 less level than they do. For example, if they have 1 level of fatigue, they act as if you have none. This reduction increases by 1 for each renown tier up to 5 at tier V.
Combat Training Whenever the soldier gains EXP from defeating a foe in battle, they gain an additional EXP.

And that's all of the basic jobs (so far)! While any character can do anything, this just lets you choose one thing to be extra good at when you start out. As you gain and spend EXP you'll be able to either further specialize in whatever your basic job does or branch out to gain other specialties that can round out your concept a bit more, but we'll talk about those options another time. If you have any questions or would like clarifications I'd be happy to offer them, but until then happy gaming! - Forge

day 6 of 100 days of productivity 💌
Today, I had maths, CS, and EPQ. In maths it was just a key skills quiz and a bit of work on SUVAT equations, in CS we worked on binary addition, and in EPQ we were working on our record of initial ideas. I think I’m starting to narrow down what I’m going to do it on! But I’m not too sure yet.
I usually rest after school on Fridays since I’m knackered from the week + my cramps are kicking me onto my bum, but I worked on the problem set I was assigned by a maths and physics club I signed up for. It’s proving really hard, to be honest, and it needs to be completed in a week’s time. I’m really going to have to get my head down and finish that. I’m going to be working on that, tomorrow, too.
List of things to do over the weekend:
- Finish all maths homeworks
- Finish the exercises from the maths classes I’ve had this week
- Finish the Foundations of Physics booklet, and make sure I’m caught up in the Motion booklet
- Do the exam questions printed for physics
- Finish as many of the programming exercises as possible, hopefully five
- Get most of the way through the problem sets, or at least make sure I’ve fully understood the concepts within them
- Finish my record of initial ideas for EPQ
It’s a lot but I think I can do it!
- J 💌

How to Get a Medical Residency in the USA as an International Medical Graduate

Choosing to the medical residency for IMG medical students in USA is the best opt. With world-class training opportunities and state-of-the-art facilities, landing a coveted US residency spot allows you to advance your skills and expertise to the highest level.
However, getting a US medical residency as an IMG involves a step-by-step process with many requirements along the way. By understanding and following the key steps, you’ll place yourself in the best position to match into your desired residency program.
1) Register with the USMLE
Your first step when applying for US residency positions is registering with the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). The USMLE is a three-step exam assessing an IMG’s medical knowledge and clinical skills. It is a core requirement when applying to US residency programs.
Registering is an easy process online via the USMLE website. You’ll need to create an account and provide background information on your medical education and credentials. This allows you access to schedule test dates and testing center locations.
Registering with the USMLE is the vital first step for IMGs seeking US medical residencies.
2) Pass the USMLE Exams
The next step is successfully passing all required USMLE exams. These are challenging, marathon tests covering a wide range of topics. Thorough preparation through dedicated study time and practice questions is a must.
The USMLE step structure is:
Step 1 - Assesses core concepts in basic medical sciences. Often taken after 2nd year of med school.
Step 2 CK - Focuses on medical knowledge application in clinical settings. Taken during 3rd year typically.
Step 2 CS - Evaluates clinical and communication skills through interactions with standardized patients.
Scoring well on your USMLEs signals to residency programs your strong medical knowledge foundation. It also indicates readiness for the fast-paced rigors of a US residency.
Many IMG applicants space out their exam schedule over a 1-2 year timeframe. Create your own prep timeline backward from desired residency start dates.
Allow plenty of dedicated study time to pass the USMLE exams.
3) Get Valuable Clinical Experience in the USA
In addition to tests, US residencies want applicants exposed to the American healthcare system and culture.
Gaining clinical experience in the US through observerships and clinical electives are a big advantage. These allow you hands-on learning of workflows, systems, treatments, technologies, patient populations, documentation, communication norms and more in American hospitals and clinics.
Observership organizations like Prasad Medical Center (+1 718-774-6060) assist IMGs in securing observership positions across the country. Be sure to research and understand program eligibility terms before applying.
Even a few weeks of US clinical experience can give that important edge among competitive applicants.
US clinical experience highlights adaptability to American medical norms.
4) Register with the AAMC
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has two key systems you must access during your application process:
MSPE (Medical Student Performance Evaluation) – Official record of medical education including grades, rankings and assessment.
ERAS (Electronic Residency Application Service) – Centralized online application portal distributing all materials to selected residency programs.
Register with AAMC early to get your credentials verified, understand each platform and have ERAS documentation ready when application season starts.
Connecting with the AAMC is essential throughout the residency hunt.

5) Pick your Residency Programs
When deciding which residency programs to apply for, start broad. Identify specialties matching your interests, strengths and USMLE scores. Use online directories to make a list of reach, reasonable match and safety options across several states or regions.
Factors like location competitiveness, program size, IMG match history and curriculum emphasis can help you categorize options. Have a few safety choices with higher IMG acceptance rates.
Research programs thoroughly to have residency options at each level.
6) Get your ECFMG Token and Register with ERAS
Once programs are selected, activate your ECFMG (Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates) token. This allows ERAS to verify your test scores, credentials and identity when applying.
Next, access your MyERAS applicant profile. Add your exam history, experiences, publications and other credentials that programs will review.
Double and triple check all entries for accuracy before submitting to avoid costly mistakes or delays.
MyERAS is your central application hub throughout the residency process.
7) Finalize Documentation and Submit ERAS Application
With your MyERAS profile complete, finalize all required documentation:
Personal statement
Medical school transcripts
MSPE Dean’s letter
Letters of recommendation (3+)
School catalogues
Proofread all materials thoroughly before uploading to ERAS by the deadlines. Activate program selections and assign supporting documents for each.
Carefully prepare all pieces of your ERAS application package.
8) Medical Residency Interview
With a strong application submitted early, interview offers should follow!
Interview formats vary widely across residencies. Common options include one-on-one, panel interviews, multiple mini interviews (MMIs) and virtual interviews.
Careful preparation is key. Research programs, polish answers to common questions, hone your communication style, dress professionally and send prompt thank you notes.
Treat travel associated interviews as 24/7 assessments of fit. Be gracious, avoid complaining and share your passion for medicine and interest in the program.
Interviews are critical to sealing a residency position – make the most of them!
9) Register with the NRMP
After interviewing, register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) by late January. Creating your NRMP account starts the matching process based on how you rank programs and how they rank applicants.
The yearly Match Day in mid-March reveals results simultaneously to applicants across the country. This coordinated effort fills nearly 40,000 residency roles each spring.
Understand match statistics for given specialties and programs to set realistic expectations before this nerve-wracking day!
Learning match nuances helps ease the anticipation leading up to Match Day!
10) Residency Post-Match Focus
If matched, congratulations on achieving that coveted US residency program spot! Notify all relevant parties, celebrate thoroughly and handle any needed visa application processes.
Review program details to address required paperwork, licensing, preparations or moving requirements before start dates. Share excitements and ask graduated residents for advice as you transition to this intense but rewarding new chapter!
For those not matched, don’t be discouraged! Strategize about strengthening certain areas of your application and discuss options with mentors. Often success comes with perseverance and giving yourself the best opportunities the following year.
We hope this overview gives international medical graduates more clarity on the pathway to getting a US medical residency. While challenging, thousands achieve this goal annually through careful planning, dedication to preparation, and showing your passion for serving US patient populations.
If you still need assistance securing clinical experience or have any other questions along your journey, don’t hesitate to contact the knowledgeable team at Prasad Medical Center at (+1 718-774-6060) or visit https://www.prasadmedicalcenter.com/ We wish you the best of luck in achieving your American medical career dreams!

This last point bears repeating.
Assuming you are reading in English (because that's the language of this thread), the language and ALL OF IT'S LITERATURE were developed in England and the countries that inherited English.
Unfortunately, the overwhelming majority of the educated class in those countries prior to the 1900s was white males. Argue about how horrible that was elsewhere - it remains a characristic about the foundational and influential writing in one of the world's most broadly used languages.
So yes, "old white men" as a perspective is grossly overrepresented. But if you try to throw them out you'll miss most of what Influenced and informed everyone else.
There is not a fantasy author you respect that hasn't been impacted by Tolkien or CS Lewis.
Serious and humorous authors alike still walk trails first blazed by Shakespeare, Milton, and Franklin.
And many English authors were forging new ground in territory originally mapped out by Homer, Sophicles, Plato, Virgil, Dante, Cervantes, Goethe.....
So while it may seem like a dated premise, you should read and judge literature on its merits instead of the gender or race of the author.
"The problem is people don't read classics anymore"
No I think the problem is people don't read WIDELY. The ONLY ya and/or fantasy romance crowd is just as insufferable as the ONLY classics crowd or the ONLY litfic crowd or the ONLY nonfiction crowd and vice versa.
You gotta get some variety in there my guys

Choosing the Right Course After 12th: A Bachelor Business Program
Completing Class 12 is a turning point that marks the beginning of one of the most important decisions in a student’s academic journey—choosing the right undergraduate course. At this stage, both students and parents often feel overwhelmed by the wide range of courses after 12th. From traditional academic degrees to career-focused programs, the options are vast.
The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) is one of the most promising choices for students who want a strong foundation in business, management, and leadership.
Why is BBA One of the Best Courses?
In recent years, the best courses after intermediate have included programs that lead directly to employment, offer real-world skills, and allow for diverse career paths. The BBA ticks all these boxes. It equips students with knowledge of business operations, marketing, human resources, and financial management—skills that are relevant across industries.
Unlike other general degrees that may take longer to translate into job opportunities, the BBA prepares students for roles like Business Analyst, Marketing Executive, HR Manager, and even Entrepreneur. Whether you're planning to join a corporate setup or start your own venture, this course gives you the tools to succeed.
Career-Focused Content for Commerce Students
Many students from the commerce stream explore degrees like B.Com, CA, CS, or BMS. The after 12th commerce courses list is often filled with options that are more theoretical or finance-focused. While these programs have their advantages, the BBA stands out because of its practical approach. It combines business theory with real-world application, making it a smarter choice for students who want to enter the workforce with job-ready skills.
While academic programs like BA in English or B.Sc in IT are great for students interested in research or subject mastery, the BBA is tailored for those seeking a professional edge. In the growing pool of best bachelor courses after 12th, the BBA continues to shine due to its adaptability. It’s a versatile degree that opens doors in marketing, sales, operations, banking, consulting, and more.

Understanding the Entry Requirements
As you prepare for college applications, it’s important to know the documents required for UG admission. Keep your 10th and 12th mark sheets, transfer and migration certificates, ID proof like Aadhaar or PAN, and passport-sized photographs for the admission.
Before you apply, it helps to be clear on the business degree requirements . Most institutions accept students from any stream—Commerce, Arts, or Science—if they’ve passed Class 12 from a recognised board.
