source. i think this is very pretty. this is a normal map. The idea is like. Suppose we want to have a 3d model of an old desk like this:

If we just throw that picture on a texture and hit render, we get something like this:

Which doesn't look particularly realistic! Notice how the light is staying in one place and all the highlights on the places where the pencil has dug into the wood don't move to catch the light. Our eyes automatically pick up a lot of detail about the texture of surfaces, and this doesn't look real.

in particular, the angle of the surface determines how much light is reflected at the camera. So we need a way to store the angle of every point on our surface! But it turns out we can use a neat coincidence; we see 3 primary colors and live in 3-dimensional space! To store the orientation of a surface, you can use the normal vector--the arrow perpendicular to the surface. (I like to imagine the object being covered in little tiny spikes sticking straight out at a right angle. We need a way to store those spikes.) Since we have 3 colors and 3 dimensions, we can encode the angle of the normal vector spikes as a color, where the red channel means the left-right angle, the green channel means the up-down angle, and the blue channel means the vertical angle sticking out at the viewer. So to go back to the old image:

The cyan bits to the left (some green, some blue, no red) are spikes pointing to the left. The red/pink bits to the right are spikes pointing to the right. The neutral blue-grey color in the middle is a spike sticking straight up.

There's lots of ways to make a normal map. You can paint them yourself, you can model a really complicated geometry and then calculate a normal map to apply to a much simpler geometry, or you can create it as the "derivative" of a heightmap (a greyscale image where white is high bumps and black is dips). There's even cool neural network things that try to infer the height/normal map from a picture or video!

Here's that normal map I stole applied to a totally flat grey square, with the light moving. Look how convincing the illusion of depth is!

So I think this is a really cool technique! But I also think that normal maps, the images themselves, are stunningly beautiful. That's why the background of my avatar is a normal map!

Small tidbits about my Still Into You 2ha animatic

Coz it's April, exactly one year from now was when I started completing it and I'm in the mood now. + I don't think I made a proper one + it won the twitter poll

Check it out if you're interested... or not! I just want to dump my thoughts and fun facts that I thought of while making this.

If you've been hanging around my blog for a while, it's kinda evident that I did post a promo post for Still Into You back in January 2023. And that first part does have an in-depth explanation about what it covers (which is from the start to the first chorus).

If you're wondering why: TL;DR I can't work on An Act of Kindness coz I was back home from school for vacation and I thought of the idea during a trip.

Anyway, I ramble. Time to get to the actual discussion.

(spoilers!!) The Actual Discussion

Making the rest of Still Into You, unlike Mo Ran's feelings for CWN, was actually just straightforward. I already knew that it'd cover the rest of the book, given that I intentionally focused heavily on book 1 while making part 1.

Like part 1, part 2 was that type of animatic that just naturally flowed during the storyboarding and rough sketch process. The whole animatic is divided into three phases which covers the following: Book 1, Book 2 and 3, and lastly the Epilogue.

Book 1 I've already discussed in an earlier post here but I did find this interesting tidbit I wrote to my cousin:

Yeah I really wish I have a funny image to put here. I'm really enjoying looking back at my stuff and seeing my initial plans though.

Order at which I made each part.

One thing of note (and actually a common oversight I experience while doing storyboards coz I don't do timings) was that I storyboarded the frames when the vocals started and forgot the timings in between.

So I kinda had to fill the parts between part 1 and 2 last-ish? (don't really remember the proper timings).

Oh, oh! And another fun fact:

Still Into You Part 2 (Rough Draft)

Part 2 was initially done on my tablet in CSP so there's a whole different and rougher version of it. (pls lower the volume if you're wearing earphones)

Funnily enough, this took me like one sitting to finish and a whole lot of sessions to clean up. I do like this process though given that, around the time I drew this, I started leaning heavily into animation and prioritizing getting my thoughts across without care for cleanliness. (Something I felt held me back too much while making Please Don't Leave Me).

In fact, there are some obvious frames that I didn't really bother polishing up (mostly because they're too hard for me or they just flash by quickly). A glaring example is this frame from the third part:

Another fun fact about the scene where TXJ shows CWN the plant he's been raising is it's actually inspired off of a doodle I made for someone in the Two Lifetimes CSE back in April 16 2023.

I just really think that it's super adorable for them. Mo Ran in the the epilogue section alternates between TXJ and 2.0.

Aside from the plant, TXJ also appears in this frame which is inspired from one of the extras. Another silly intentional decision I did is to have him pour alcohol onto a cup and drink from the bottle.

The one on the left is also from (you guessed it) an extra! It's based from an offhand mention that CWN makes in one of them. (Let me know what your guesses are haha)

I kinda just jumped into the 3rd half of the song, huh? I hope my ramblings aren't too much! I just wanna let it flow naturally.

Returning to the topic of the storyboard, I really only had a rough idea of what I wanted for the 3rd half. The references to the extras and even Goutou's appearance just came when I was already putting it into frame. Like, this was what I initially had in mind for the 2nd chorus to the end.

I think one of the notable differences is that I initially planned on doing the half MR half CWN screen transition the same way i did with chorus 1 and 2 but decided against it. In retrospect, I think it fits a lot because both aren't divided anymore.

Something about the second verse + chorus of the song

Like in chorus 1 and chorus 3, this section of the song takes on a darker tone since it covers book 2 going into book 3. It's a lot to talk about so I'm gonna select a couple that I personally like that's worth mentioning and leave the rest to the viewers to guess.

Also sorry not sorry for those who got spoiled by the animatic lmao.

The confession scene

Another fun fact: The confession scene in Still Into You and Please Don't Leave Me are intentionally connected through the color palette.

It's just that Still Into You takes a dump at how it treats it. Yes, the stick figures are intentional. It adds to the funny and tbh Still Into You really is just a feel good animatic. The comedy also serves as a whiplash to the angst hell that is the chorus 🥰.

My Favorite 2ha Moment

Gotta insert my favorite chapter here (ch 184) which I think is one of 2ha's peaks because it resolves CWN's doubts about MR's feelings all this times.

And I'm just soo glad I could incorporate it in an animatic because it's so important to me. AND Like, 'yknow, I think it echoes the song very well because guess what MR tells CWN then?

“It has always been you."

That one frame before the chorus

There's like this moment before the second chorus starts where MR tells CWN something. I wanted it to echo ch 207 where MR felt the pressure of having to reveal that he actually is reborn and has memories of his past life.

If this were animated I'd have had MR match the song and tell CWN "I'm still into you".

Anyways, here's the frame before it zooms in. Physically it's still at ch 207, but I wanted the shadows to imply what happens next which is the chorus.

The French government is putting the final touches on a reformed sex education syllabus for schools, with some topics, notably around gender identity, causing resistance among conservative groups.

Education Minister Elisabeth Borne -- who previously served as prime minister under President Emmanuel Macron between May 2022 and January 2024 -- is spearheading the effort, saying overhauling sex education guidelines was overdue.

"Education about love, about relationships and sexuality is absolutely essential," Borne told the France Inter broadcaster.

The overhauled syllabus is to come into force after the summer holidays this year, and calls for three sex education sessions per year for primary, middle and secondary shools, including private schools.

While three such annual sessions have been mandatory on paper for over two decades, they happen only rarely.

While Borne's view that better education might help in the fight against sexual assault on children, underage consumption of online pornography and sexist discrimination has broad support, some hot-button issues in her draft guidelines do not.

Top of the list is the inclusion of a discussion around gender identity and biological sex which has become a hot-button topic in recent years in many western countries.

Gender identity is usually defined as the personal sense of one's gender which, it has been argued, can be different from a person's biological sex, that is sometimes described as "the sex assigned at birth".

Such discussions have run into resistance from conservative associations and politicians who argue that gender theory has no place in schools, with some going as far as opposing all sex education in the classroom.

"Sex education is not in the best interest of children," said SOS Education, a conservative association close the Catholic church, which has collected over 80,000 signatures for a petition against what it said was a "a crazy project" by the government.

"Schools should start by teaching each child to read, write, reflect, respect authority and to accept that others may think differently, and be different, from them," SOS Education said.

Borne's team said they had taken many concerns on board, and in its current form the syllabus mentions gender identity seven times, down from 15 times in its first draft.

In addition, she said, gender identity will become a school topic starting in high school, not before.

The revised programme, seen by AFP, will be submitted for approval next week to France's Higher Education Council (CSE) which is comprised notably of teacher and parent representatives.

It contains a mention that sex education at school does not aim to "take the place of pupils' parents and families", a nod to concerns voiced by the Catholic church.

At any rate, the programme's content would be "adjusted to the age and maturity of pupils", with sexuality discussed only primary school, Borne said.

"The programme is very careful to provide quality information that is adapted to a pupil's age," she said.

The first draft of the syllabus had already sown divisions in the previous government last year when the then-minister for school success, Alexandre Portier, publicly rejected it, a stance disavowed by his boss, then-education minister Anne Genetet.

In Satan's Underground, Willson/Stratford claims that she doesn't mention any specific locations or names in order to protect herself and other victims:

You will note as you read that no specific locations are mentioned. In part this is for my own protection, but it also serves to remind you that what I've endured is not limited to one city or region. I have also changed names and descriptions of many key figures in order to protect the victims.

This of course makes no sense, since if the Satanists are actually real and would harm her and others for exposing them, just publishing this book at all would put them in a lot of trouble.

However, this choice does make sense as the actions of a woman who is writing a book full of shit she made up and doesn't want anyone checking her story.

You will notice this kind of behavior a lot when it comes to "whistleblowers" in conspiracy theory communities. They act like leaving out certain pieces of information will somehow keep them safe from the conspirators. Q drops were frequently like this. Of course, the details they leave out are inevitably those that 1. would allow someone to verify their story, or 2. they just don't have the interest, knowledge, or imagination to fill in.

Stratford describes her mother as an incredibly abusive woman, and claims that her mother was responsible for pushing her into CSE. The book presents Stratford as an only child who had absolutely no one to rely on growing up.

But as it turns out, Stratford isn't being entirely honest. For one thing, she had an older sister, Willow Nell. When Cornerstone Magazine interviewed her in their research, she confirmed that their mother had a fearsome temper, but disputed that she was as monstrously horrible as Stratford made her out to be - much less pushed her daughter into CSE and Satanism. While Stratford claims that their father walked out when she was four, in reality he left when she was nine.

According to a friend interviewed by Cornerstone Magazine, much of the abuse Stratford claims her mother inflicted upon her was taken from the novel Sybil, which... that would make sense. This is the woman who pretended to be a Holocaust survivor, after all.

Cornerstone's investigations found that, in general, Stratford was manipulative, toxic, and constantly made things up. Many of her claims contradicted each other. So keep that in mind as we go forward.

She tells the story of how her mother pushed her into prostitution, and it's all very dark and horrible, and I don't think it's necessary to go into all the details. Some of what she claims sounds plausible (and is therefore possibly inspired by the accounts of actual survivors), while others are... strange, to say the least. (Like the claim that there were all these domestic workers her mother hired, that were willing to use young Lauren Stratford in place of actual monetary payment - like, how was she finding all of these people? Or does Stratford think that grungy-looking manual laborer = child molester?)

Stratford also claims that the CSM producers her mother eventually handed her over to were producing snuff films. There is literally zero evidence that snuff films have ever been commercially made, much less child snuff films. What we're looking at is another modern spin on blood libel - remember that during the Middle Ages, Jews were often accused of being secret Satanists who would kidnap and ritualistically slaughter Christian children.

Stratford basically claims that porn is a gateway to CSA, because supposedly once you leave the realm of safe, "normal" sex, you experience an "ever-increasing abnormal, uncontrollable craving for perversions that end in abuse, torture, animalistic behavior, multiple partner sex, and sex with children." She claims that "The cravings become more and more deviant, finally culminating with sexual acts that are almost unthinkable to the mind that hasn't been polluted with hard-core pornography."

This is of course pure bullshit. There's zero actual evidence that porn affects normal people this way. None whatsoever. There is, however, loads of evidence that religiosity (of the conservative Christian kind) really messes people up. The problem is created by the prudes, not the "freaks."

Needless to say, the recent "discourse" has me beyond horrified, not only as a parent of two young kids (and a decent fucking person), but as a survivor of CSA. The 911 fandom is a mess-mess. From “joking” that people should be allowed to publicly execute men for flirting with men in a way that gives them the “ick.” To arguing that queer men are liars and cheats who spread disease. To joking about queer men dying of AIDS. To routinely using either the mammy trope or “sassy black” trope to characterize the Black Women of the show. To routinely hypersexualizing—like—the token Latiné character or relying on the “sassy Latin” trope in their characterization of him, too. To defending ableism. To now defending CSAM and a literal pedophile who has written several fics featuring CSE (that are often mis-tagged, mis-described, mis-rated, and re-uploaded under new names to get people to accidentally read them).

And if someone’s response to “Hey, we should do something about this” is to go “Nooo! But my blorbo fan fantasies,” they need to log-off and go touch grass; spend several days talking to people in-person instead of through a screen. It’s about the most chronically online BS reaction someone could have.

As you said— this shit shouldn’t be broadcast for entertainment. And that’s what’s getting lost to people. These fics are very truly explicit material featuring sexual fantasies about children, and they’re being posted for arousing entertainment. The person may have claimed they were doing this to punish fans for supporting a (new) canon queer relationship, but given how they’ve expanded their tags to catch wider audiences, that is clearly not the case. They want you to read it and enjoy it.

Like… I understand that there are a lot of powerful men in important positions who uses moral affronts to CSAM to actually censor queer people or information on bodily autonomy. But assuming that anyone who claims to care about child sexual exploitation is actually lying and has nefarious motives is… dangerous. And fallacious. It is so-so important to actually analyze what an individual is saying and how. There’s a difference between “there should be a report function specifically for CSEM” and “we should shut this site down because the people who use it are porn-obsessed degenerates.” There’s a difference between “I don’t think this site should have an anonymous feature because it allows users to easily subvert a block, and protecting a block should be the responsibility of the site, not the individual user” and “this site is full of dangerous kinks that could give kids ideas, so all of it must go!”

But if you can just lump anyone who disagrees with you into one group and label them “bad and oppressing me,” then you don’t need to critically analyze your own gut/emotional reaction to what they said. And what they said might have actually been a fairly reasonable—and incredibly moderate—step forward.

All I suggested was more robust blocking and reporting mechanisms on a BETA site.

It’s telling that they only bring out the chronically online names and discourse terms when it’s about CSAM. Many (but definitely not all) of the very people going to bat for never, ever changing Ao3 because it’s “perfect” were also the same people who unironically argued that two adult fictional men over the age of 30 joking about a 10 yr or less age gap between them are “predatory” and “making light of incestuous abuse.” Although, IDK what else I could expect from people who “joked” that they hoped certain fans would kill themselves over fictional characters.

Something about the whole thing screams “I only protect power and its narratives.”

Mini-Essay: Without Light

WARNING: Discussions of dystopia, gore and cannibalism.

One of the good things about having a wide taste in media is how you can run into the oddest comparisons that still have value.

One of those is between the Project Moon games and Werewolf the Apocalypse 5th ed.

I know I have been focusing on W5 a lot this week, but the way it has messed up is something epic.

To explain to those who haven't played Project Moon games, they are set in a megacity surrounded by hostile wastelands.
