Luna’s first appearance since the Season 1 Finale. So I got questions...

Before we begin, let me paint you a picture: Season 1 came and went and we haven’t seen Luna at all after the first episode. So that’s a story people want filled, so they turned to fan works. I, myself, even found this online fanfic series called Progress which is the story of Luna trying to learn the modern times. My favorite being Luna Vs Baseball. So this episode is coming as a shock to those who followed Luna via the fanside.

But before that, Twilight is showing off her Trixie Costume Starswirl the Bearded Costume as she and Spike (dressed up as a dragon) are going out for Equestria’s version of Halloween: Nightmare Night. We got pranks, games, trick or treating and basically using the Legend of Nightmare Moon as a tradition for fun.

But this year, the Former Nightmare Moon has returned, looking much bigger than we last saw her. As far as I remember, there is no in universe reason to explain why she’s suddenly bigger with floating hair. What IDW attempted didn’t work for me and I don’t know if any of the creators said why. So as far as I know my reason is the real reason.

She came to Ponyville to hopefully change Nightmare Night into something more to her liking and less a constant reminder of how people were afraid of her. Sadly, her old ways combined with Pinkie continuing to keep the tradition alive makes it hard for Luna to feel accepted. Even with Twilight’s help, and it working at times, Pinkie brings back the fear.

It gets Luna so upset she decides to cancel Nightmare Night forever! But after a confrontation with Pinkie, Twilight learns that Pinkie was purposely making people scared because “sometimes its just fun to be scared”. Its a nice sentiment now, but you’ll see this happen again when Fluttershy has to confront her fear in two more seasons.

Luna plays along, pretending to be Nightmare Moon again, and the kids enjoy it. Now Luna enjoys the holidays and feels more accepted than before. Overall, its a nice episode. Though I will admit I am spoiled by future Luna and her interactions with others like the CMC in the Dream Trilogy and her Sister in numerous episodes to come. But the sad thing is Luna got more characterization in this one episode than Celestia does in these two seasons, so no wonder why Luna is most people’s favorite Princess.

As for how it fits in GLAB Canon, well...

At the time this would happen Luna was still Nightmare Moon so this would just be a normal holiday.

As for Luna after Nightmare Moon, I already made that story.
