NORTH CAROLINA CULLOWHEE
Instinctually, you may feel the same pull to contribute past your own death. How else to explain the increasing popularity of the refrain: “When I die, no fuss. Just dig a hole and put me in it.”
A sensible request, indeed. Sending your corpse back into nature would seem to be both the most inexpensive and the most “green” option for your death. After all, the plants and animals we consume during our lives are grown and nourished by the soil.
A single acre of soil can contain 2,400 pounds of fungi, 1,500 pounds of bacteria, 900 pounds of earthworms, 890 pounds of arthropods and algae, and 133 pounds of protozoa. The soil teems with life, as does the dead body (inside its sausage casing of keratin, or dead skin). Microscopic sorcery takes place when a body is placed just a few feet deep in the soil. Here, the trillions of bacteria living inside you will liquefy your innards. When the built-up pressure breaks the seal of skin an orgiastic reunion takes place, in which our bodies merge with the earth.
We owe our very lives to the soil, and, as William Bryant Logan said, “the bodies we give it back are not payment enough.” Though, presumably, they are a start.

Historic Mt. Zion AME Zion Church of Cullowhee, North Carolina
The congregation of Mt. Zion AME Zion Church was formed in 1892 by eleven freedmen and women. The first building was a cabin in Dix Gap. Led by Reverend Joseph Hooper, the church membership proliferated. Their next building was constructed on land now a part of Western Carolina University. In 1926, WCU leadership approached the church about relocation so that they could build a new dormitory.…

This is in response to your West Virginia anon.
I'm also looking to move to the region and ironically western NC is the area I dream about. I live (unhappily) in a large northern city now but came of age down south - further south, actually, but the Blue Ridge is my happy place. I never wanted to leave the south at all but found myself in a place where I ran out of opportunities and had to leave to survive. Now I feel like my mental health demands I go back that direction.
I'm pretty poor so I don't think I'm much of a threat as a gentrifier but I AM worried about being able to make a go of it. Is it still a place where a disabled, newly sober person with a high school education (I can drive a car, for whatever that's worth, though!) can move in and be ok in terms of finding an affordable place to live and a way to make a living? Is there anywhere in particular you would suggest I go?
ayyy best carolina <333
valid concerns, honestly.
to be frank i do worry about the affordability of it all for you, and anyone else really. WNC is seriously getting fucked by snowbirds and by corps coming in and shearing off ridges to build housing plants and vacation homes.
plus, the last few years, with this weird trend of SpoOkY ApPaLaChIa, there's air bnbs everywhere taking up potential homes. young rich kids keep flocking here, taking up more precious space and giving very little back. (probably bc the only place they reliably could name in appalachia until recently was asheville, but i digress.)
and because everyone's been flocking in for the last decade/two decades, prices are sky high, even in small towns.
that's before you consider the scarcity of job availability, which may also pose an obstacle for you. jobs have always been scarce here, independent of the housing issues. growing up it was all just minimum wage retail, hospitality, gas stations, stuff like that unless you live somewhere bigger, or worked at a hospital/care home.
and there's only so much of that per tiny town with lots of residents. you (plural, general, not you specifically obviously) cant find a job in town A where you live, but you found one in town B an hour and a half away. your low paycheck is gone in the gas it takes to get there n back.
meanwhile, person in town B can't find a job in their hometown cause you done took it out of necessity. so they go to town C and find one. person in town C gotta go to town D now. so on and so on.
it's just... there's just not a lot.
pair that with the recent influx of gentrifiers, and people born here are struggling as is.
god this reply hurt my heart to write. please just let appalachia rest (not you, anon. them.)
as an aside, that is so cool about your sobriety by the way. congratulations, seriously. i know im just some asshole on the internet but im proud as fuck of you and i hope you can find a healthy, happy place to live in our beautiful hills. i'm partial to areas like clyde, sylva and cullowhee personally <3

Pisgah National Forest in Western North Carolina
The Pisgah National Forest is known for its mile-high peaks, rushing waterfalls, densely forested slopes and spans over 500,000 acres. It includes whitewater rivers, waterfalls, hundreds of miles of trails and is a primarily a hardwood forest.
The Forest contains the first parcel of land purchased under the Weeks Act of 1911, which resulted in the establishment of national forests throughout the eastern United States.
It also has two of the first wilderness areas in the east, as well as the Cradle of Forestry in America historic monument, which protects the first school of forestry in the United States. The Pisgah, Grandfather, and Appalachian Ranger Districts are located along the eastern edge of western North Carolina's mountains, offering tourists a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities as well as the ability to admire the natural beauty of the mountains.
The Forest  surrounds Asheville, contains some of the most stunning and challenging mountain landscapes in eastern North America. This entire area was formerly part of the Biltmore Estate!

⎯The Moore Building (Western Carolina University), Cullowhee, North Carolina
The Moore Building is the oldest standing structure at WCU. It was originally opened in 1924 as an all-women's dormitory, but it served many different purposes over the years⎯ with the basement even briefly acting as a morgue during the 30s! A popular rumor on campus is that it's haunted by the spirit of a female student who was sexually assaulted and murdered within the third-floor bathroom.

#4 - Gorges State Park - 4/12/2023
Transylvania County / 976 Grassy Ridge Road, Sapphire, NC 28774 / GPS: 35.0960, -82.95105 ..... PARK MAP
Fast Facts: Located near the tripoint of NC, SC and Georgia, this is the western most state park in our arsenal. There are quite the number of waterfalls to see (26 to be exact) and over 56 miles of hiking trails. Adjacent to Pisgah National Forest, it is also one of the newer state parks in NC, established in 1999. The underlying land has a unique history starting with a significant recovery from a manmade disaster in 1916 followed by exchanges from one owner to the next over fifty plus years until the state finally purchased it from Duke Energy Corporation.
Trail(s): Rainbow Falls and Turtleback Falls Trails - 4.30 miles/1:50:11 - AllTrails + No Strava (left watch at home like a big dummy)
Hike Buddies: Jackson Helms (and Vanessa for a small part)
Hike Conditions: sunny, cool - mid 50s at the start.
Comments: Up here in Cullowhee on spring break for a college tour tomorrow, we ventured south a day early down through Cashiers to Sapphire NC to take on this moderately strenuous hike. It was a nice, crisp cool morning to start - we hit the trail shortly after 9:30am. Being mid-week there were not a ton of early-goers. This really was a tale of two hikes - the initial hike was a downhill descent on a well-maintained path that eventually got more technical when we actually left the state park to blaze the more rugged, less-maintained version. After going up and down a number of manmade stairs, we finally arrived to Rainbow Falls (magnificent) and hung out a few minutes before keeping right and making our way down to Turtleback Falls (also magnificent, albeit a little less). We didn't stop there - we took the trail to the end where we we came upon a fence and a private property sign with yet one finally waterfall in our sights. Enter the second hike - coming back out. And what goes down, must go back up. The ascent back up and out of the trail was a mild burn and a good cardio workout. Coming out we passed a number of families making their way down. After rewarding ourselves with some excellent BBQ at Haywood Smokehouse in Dillsboro, a long winters, uh, spring nap was in order.
