Breathtaking, Private, and Full of Blood-Hungry, EVIL Amphibians! "The Tank" reviewed! (Well Go USA Entertainment / Blu-ray)
“The Tank” on Blu-ray from Well Go USA Entertainment! A financially struggling San Franscisco family of three learn their recently deceased grandmother had a large, secluded property on the oceanic foothills of Oregan. The coastal property was kept a secret for 30 years from the mentally unstable woman’s youngest child, the father, for reasons unknown. Rundown and off the beaten path, the vast…

Thomas Dolby, aka Steve & Yolanda, who are actually Robin Williams and Joan Cusack, 1992: "The Mirror Song", aka "Memories of Things", from the movie "Toys"
Not widely remembered these days, but a seminal experience for me as a kid. Robin Williams plays a toy company heir trying to stop the company from falling into the hands of his uncle, who wants to start manufacturing deadly military drones controlled by kids that think they're playing harmless video games. Joan Cusack [spoiler] turns out to be an android. LL Cool J plays Michael Gambon's son. There's an unrevealed amphibious assault creature known only as "the Sea Swine". Besides this banger, the soundtrack includes Enya's Christmas song, a battle theme by Frankie Goes To Hollywood, and Tori Amos singing about how fun it is to work in a factory. Robin Wright and Arthur Malet are there. Does it make any sense? No, none. HOWEVER.

Top 25 Christmas Films (25-16) (2024 Update)
Honourable mention: The Ice Harvest (2005)
Harold Ramis’ off-beat Christmas heist movie is not his best work, but its quirky & dark humour make it worth a watch, even if just for John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton.
25. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
Another in the list of black comedy Christmas crime movies? Maybe 2005 was just an odd year. Shane Black’s directorial debut is sharp, entertaining, and like most of his movies, set during Christmas. It’s an enjoyable neo-noir romp with great performances from both Robert Downey Jr. and Val Kilmer.
24. Black Christmas (1974)
If you’re the type that loves Halloween and wishes that it would just continue, Black Christmas may be up your alley. Pre-dating John Carpenter’s Halloween (1978) and often considered one of the first slash films, this Canadian Christmas ho-ho-horror is smarter than expected. Not a creature was stirring… but a killer was.
23. A Christmas Story (1983)
It’s hard not to escape the cultural influence of this movie. Less a single movie, more a series of vignettes, but it captures relatable moments of childhood, especially as it relates to the holiday season. From snowsuit problems to wishing for presents parents say that they’ll never buy, there’s a universal feeling to this movie. Which is why it’s played year after year.
22. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
The third of National Lampoon’s Vacation films is still a reliable laugh-fest of the Griswold family’s misfortunes. Like A Christmas Story, there’s a relatability to trying to celebrate Christmas, put up lights, and deal with relatives. Between the two, my preference leans towards this one from the memories of watching it. But there’s still a relatable-ness to when Christmas goes wrong, but eventually right.
21. The Polar Express (2004)
Robert Zemeckis’ career has been long and varied. The Back to the Future film trilogy (1985—90) and Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1988) are childhood favourites, while Death Becomes Her (1992) and Forrest Gump (1994) are excellent for older audiences. His 2004 CGI/mo-cap film definitely dips into the Uncanny Valley and shows its age, but the heart of the story is strong. Ebert said the film has a “haunting, magical quality” (I think partially due to Alan Silvestri’s score) but that ineffable quality is part of its Christmas magic.
20. Little Women (2019)
There have been many adaptations of Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel, but Greta Gerwig’s adaptation is perhaps the best. An incredible cast each give their all with a tight script that focuses on family love and the bonds we share. Oh, this is not a Christmas movie? Not only do some of the most pivotal points happen during Christmas, but the themes of struggle, grief, and coming together are resonant during the holidays. This will not be the last movie where Christmas provides something of a thematic throughline.
19. The Snowman (1982)
An animated short (25 min), The Snowman is a touching piece about Christmas and the feeling of magic that comes from the holidays. A boy goes on a magical adventure with a snowman, shown with beautiful storybook illustrations and without dialogue. The only words come from the hauntingly beautiful “Walking in the Air”. This is basically the superior Frosty.
18. Tangerine (2015)
Set in the streets of L.A., Tangerine is the story of two transgender sex workers on Christmas eve having a journey about sisterhood, growth, and dealing with struggles. Similar to Little Women, the spirit of Christmas is in the themes of connection and redemptive acts, even without the snow. Filmed with iPhones, this film is raw but stylistic and engaging with fantastic performances. It’s also one of the few Christmas movies that explicitly features people in the LGBTQA+ community. It’s an unconventional pick but worth adding to your Christmas list.
17. Home Alone (1990)
Sometimes family is a lot to deal with. Sometimes you just wanna be alone. And that’s what Kevin gets on Christmas, a house all to himself. John Hughes’ script has a great mix of sweet and sardonic, mixing Christmas feels with a criminal caper. Chris Columbus’ filmmaking is fine, but Macaulay Culkin’s performance is what elevates this movie into a Christmas classic. There’s laughs, there’s feels, and there’s some good old-fashioned Christmas chaos.
16. Scrooge / A Christmas Carol (1951)
Sometimes classics are made by the performance of their lead, the centerpiece that brings you back. Alastair Sim’s portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge captures his cantankerous nature and he perfectly portrays Scrooge's reactions to the hope and horrors from his three Christmas visitors. The tale is a classic one and the film captures Dickens’ style of both darkness and hope.

A couple escapes their urban nightmare to the tranquility of rural Ireland only to hear stories of mysterious beings who live in the gnarled, ancient wood at the foot of their new garden. As warned by their new neighbors, in Irish lore the Redcaps will come when called to help souls in dire need of rescue, but it’s crucial to remember that there is always a dear price to pay for their aid.

read more for breeze-by reviews of the books films and shows I read/watched in 2022
books
a tree grows in brooklyn (reread) - 5/5 cemented as one of my favorite books. reading it at 25 was very different from reading it at 18
lord of the flies - oof 5/5 v chilling
the neverending story - 2/5 the whole movie is in the first seven chapters and it just drags on from there and bastian was annoying
an absolutely remarkable thing - 3/5 interesting story that I wouldn’t usually read and it ended kinda ambiguously. the main character was a little annoying but it was good for the story
the curious incident of the dog in the night time - 2/5 kinda overrated in my opinion and was kinda a bummer overall
their eyes were watching god - 4/5 kinda a bummer too but v beautiful
walk two moons - 3/5 a little overly Solemn in my opinion
shadow of a bull - 2/5 a little boring and anti climatic
hooked - 5/5 sutton foster has been one of my favorite performers for years and I really enjoyed getting a closer look at her life
the women in the castle - 5/5 a very chewy read. not a book you can dismiss easily
the hearts of horses - 4/5 v unfortunately titled and covered, but v enjoyable slice of life read. actually related to the main character, and the horses were written realistically.
jack and jill - 3/5 very slice of life w Moral Lessons, and I didn’t really agree with the moral lesson
the boy who harnessed the wind -4/5 more memoir-y then I thought it would be but I liked it like that
wink: - 3/5 finished on 1/1/23 but I’m counting it. definitely worth the read but could’ve been better
films
red riding hood - 2/5 pretty silly plot but gary oldman was acting his pants off
the prestige - 3/5 v captivating but left me feeling ick
a monster calls - 4/5 almost as good as the book
atonement - 2/5 v pretty but. betrayled
gladiator - 5/5 v refreshing to see this type of movie, 2000s style
encanto - 3/5 not enough recovery time
moulin rouge - 3/5 wild but it could be deep
the caddy - 3/5 jerry lewis is the basis of my sense of humor
logan - 5/5 really liked seeing such a grounded superhero film
hanna - 3/5 underdeveloped as whole. woulda worked better as a mini series
last christmas - 3/5 liked the characters, well acted and written, didn’t like the twist
school of rock - 5/5 there is nothing wrong with this movie
to all the boys p.s i still love you - 3/5 silly conflict. girl just go to school
if I stay - 4/5 much deeper than I thought it was gonna be
sing - 3/5 loved the littel chameleon creature
the fantastic mr fox - 4/5 v strange but a little long
the exception - 1/5 left me feeling v ick
winter’s bone - 4/5 different from what I expected. v grounded and unsensational
beastly - 2/5 lol v v 2011 black cover ya book feeling. v silly
the giver - 3/5 better than I thought it would be. rushed through in favor of a more dramatic ending
the addams family - 5/5 enjoyed everything about this
the addams family values - 4/5 not as sharp as the first one but joan cusack is in it
nope - 5/5 sooo good. loved the concept of an animal like alien and everything was set up so well. does rely on the “don’t look a horse in the eye or it will go berserk” thing which is just. not true. (literally just be chill and the horse will be chill. it’s more about approaching them from the side than directly in front). but on the whole the horse portrayal was pretty good
vengeance - 3/5 got v tense after the twist. went some places. left me feeling hmm
good will hunting - 4/5 literally heard of this movie my whole life. it’s good
rampage - 2/5 I love big scary animal monsters but this got too big and silly
potc: on stranger tides - 3/5 the story was better than I thought it would be, but overall it wasn’t made with the same care as the og trilogy
potc: dead men tell no tales - 2/5 almost just stupid
spiderman: no way home - 4/5 everyone was acting their pants off and it was great
black panther: wakanda forever - 4/5 ran a little long but loved all the choices and visuals
weird - 3/5 what it says on the can. bizarre and funny
the princess switch 2 - 2/5
the princess switch 3 - 3/5 unexpected pathos???
hildago - 3/5 honestly think I would’ve liked it better if he shot the horse at the end :/ which is a horrible thing to say but
falling for christmas - 2/5 I did it for you miss lohan
disenchanted - 2/5 and one of those is solely for idina menzel singing
jojo rabbit - 5/5 tonally brilliant and surprisingly full despite being under two hours
glass onion - 5/5 v fun and v engaging from beginning to end
tv shows
attack on titan s4 pt 2 - 3/5 not enough levi. also can we just finish this dam story
stranger things s4 - 4/5 a lot of crunchy plot stuff happened, v curious to see how it will end
only murders in the building s2 - 4/5 not as strong as s1 but still v enjoyable
derry girls s3 - 5/5 no notes
kenobi - 3/5 not bad but also pretty unnecessary
this is us s6 - 3/5 pretty likely end to the series but the more I thought about it the more I didn’t like it
abbott elementary - 5/5 no notes. most enjoyable mockumentary I’ve seen
rutherford falls - haven’t finished the first season yet so reserving final judgement but so far so good

*points at you excitedly*
So happy to find another YOLO fan and Peleeken lover! Got a question related to Peleeken actually! What are your headcanons for him and for the Peleeken species as a whole?
PELEEKENNNNNN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have a lot of hcs abt this weird little guy. We only see him like once a season so you know hes up to stuff on his own time.
So here's some hcs :)
Species wise I have no fucking idea what's going on. I'm not going to pretend I do. Like I dunno man theyre Cusack Creatures (tm) that's about all I know.
YOLO and SF aren't actually in the same universe apparently, but in my world they are. The "canon" i go by isn't really solid. But in my brain I do have distinctions between what is solidly canon and what isnt.
I think its fun to note that there's evidence for some things abt him! Such as
Cannot pick up on any social cues whatsoever along with no awareness of how loud he's being. Everything he says is 100% genuine and he genuinely does not register sarcasm. He also thinks the best of everyone as much as he can no matter how they treat him! So...you know. May be on the autism spectrum like me.
Very crafty and good with his hands. Like w/ the dreamcatchers that im pretty sure he made and the fact he repaired Sarah and Rachel's car (Not like perfectly but they were able to get home safely.)
He isn't interested whatsoever into video games or tv and he doesnt own a phone. He is like impossible to contact you kind of just have to wait for him to find you. And he will.
All his emotions are open and obvious. He doesnt try to hide anything. He doesn't get embarassed about how he feels or showing it.
He wants to do anything his friends wanna do and he'll always encourage them to come play outside
One of those people that only needs to sleep like 3 hours.
Big fan of board games and will let his friends cheat
And also since im a selfshipper here's some hcs abt him as a s/o lol
Extremely dedicated to whoever he's with to the point of being kind of overbearing.
Just straight up does not get jealous and has nothing but trust for his lover.
LOVESSS THE BEACH LOVES TO SWIM AND LOVES TO MAKE SANDCASTLES
Nothing but supportive about everything!
If his s/o wants to do something but is worried abt embarassing themselves (like ice skating or snowboarding or somth) or says they wish they could do somtht hey used to do as a kid (like having fun w bubbles, playing a fun little game like hide and seek or tag etc) he will be like OH BUT WE CAN SEE and then proceeds to do it. If his partner is worried abt embarssing themself, he will purposely fuck it up really bad and be like "See! You can do better than that" so his partner already cant embarass themself worse than he already did- and Peleeken doesnt mind at ALL if embarassing himself makes others feel more comfortable he WILL do it.
Will go out of his way to make his s/o AND their friends laugh!!!!
Would genuinely be a really good dad I think :) thats why him and Rowdy have kids
