Discovered an incredibly cool thing while fucking around in my country's equivalent of Google Maps (Mapy.cz), and that is that you can apparently select any area of the world map, fill out a form and have a 3D tactile version for visually impaired people printed out by one of the partnered institutions for free

And after a very brief look, it seems that it should be possible to get a print even if you're not from Czech republic

Podhorácko Miku!

Jumping on the cultural representation bandwagon (must say I had to look her up...) with a quick doodle of one of the least obvious Czech / Moravian folk costumes.

I mean, original idea was Valašsko / Moravian Wallachia (part of my own family heritage) but I feel like that's the second most obvious Czech folk costume artists reach for every time they want to be different and avoid the super-obvious Slovácko... Podhorácko is a rather loosely defined border region between South Moravia and Vysočina / the Highlands, where it seems the folk costume doesn't differ too much from Horácko proper and what sets the region apart is rather geography and dialect.

One thing to bear in mind is that folk costumes were never uniforms, and Podhorácko appears to be one of the regions that underline the individuality. I zoomed in on Tišnov (among other reasons like liking the town, the red and white striped skirts are striking and easy to draw) and stole some elements from an old photo of very low quality which I'm guessing is from the 1890s (based on the non-folk-costumed lady in the back), and even there every single person seems to be wearing something slightly different.

Upon reflection, not sure where I came across the beribboned sleeves because Tišnov it ain't. Ah well. If someone with better artistic skills wants to take her on, please do. Yay for cultural representation. 😀

i debated between these lyrics and "if i spilled my guts, the world would never look at you the same way" because the way i was able to capture him in this image he looked relatively serious. or at least more-so than he actually is. i did manage to give him more of a sinister look here, which i feel works with the lyrics. but this felt like an appropriate balance between being about a dog that could actually cause you physical harm and an eight ball reference.

Hi, i wanted to stop by and say that i love your art, i'm not sure what's going on in the story but i try to figure things out a little bit just based off of what words czech and polish have similar :)

17.03.2024, Getting rid of winter and welcoming spring

I visited some friends and took part in a traditional spring ritual. This was my first time taking part and it was very interesting. Girls carry a dummy made of straw, adorned with cloth, ribbons and hollow egg necklace. The dummy is Smrtka (Death) or Morana (the Slavic goddess of winter and death), the girls are carrying her out of the town, singing the whole way. At the river they set her on fire and then throw her into the river (drown her). The winter is now over and spring comes. They go back to the town with blossoming twigs decorated with ribbon (letečko), bringing spring back with them.

Happy news today: I found an American diner! Serving traditional American fare!

Decorated in the classic Americana style!

Complete with old-fashioned American small-town hospitality! (At the register, the very friendly chef asked us to guess his age (he had just told us his age) and then dug out a USB stick and laptop to show us pictures of him and Spike Lee in the nineties.)

Obviously I'm going back at the end of the month for jerk chicken and gumbo night! Because where else are you getting that in Tokyo? Also because I forgot to try their cookies.
