It’s been a decade and I am yet again faced with the impossible romance of: Former elven slave who was abused and tortured for years and have magical side affects because of it. Or the learned mage who adores his cat and could level an entire city with an explosion. I will never know peace.

Apparently we have to go over this again because people see "white haired elf boy who was enslaved" and they run with it. Personality wise and romantic plot wise, Fenris and Shadowheart are far closer parallels than Fenris and Astarion. Shadowheart is catty and cold to pretty much everyone, she and another companion constantly bicker and are on the verge of killing each other for a fair portion of the game, she's an elf with amnesia who can soften over time who can either kill or spare a family member. In general so much of how she acts and exists is a better through line. Even Lae'zel is a better parallel for Fenris in a lot of ways with how large parts of the fandom will often brag about killing her each playthrough because they hate her for being mean, aggressive, a great sword warrior, and not instantly willing to bow to the player.
I feel like there are a lot of instances where you could swap out shadowheart and Fenris' dialogue and not even really notice a difference because they act fairly similar.
Astarion and Isabela are far better parallels if you want to compare. Rogues who have a secret heart under all that snark and flirting, their willingness to throw others under the bus/kill them, doing the right thing before getting them so much pain, and often being a figure in the fandom that people argue about because their decisions can be a bit hard to stomach. Not to mention their bad endings are ones you actively have to attempt to avoid because they want to do the bad thing that they'll ultimately regret.
When you romance astarion and isabela you can encourage them to be better than they were and both are relatively (jokingly) annoyed at what you've done to them. They flirt with you and love jokes at inopportune moments.
If you like isabela's romance you're going to enjoy astarion's, but romancing fenris is vastly different from romancing astarion. I need the fandom to understand.
