Review 2 in series for Dragon Age Veilguard

First part of review series is below.

I'm not an asshole disclaimer (same as the first one, if you read that, you can just skip down to the cut.)

Something came to my attention. I need to make it crystal clear that I utterly love the diversity in DAV. It's fantastic. I'm also a heavily left leaning, non-binary, queer as fuck reviewer, editor, and author.

I'm on media blackout while I play this, so I'm only getting second-hand info on how awful it is right now in the DA Fandom. Please be safe and take care of yourselves. Arguing with incels and white supremacists is completely pointless. They sea lion worse than an actual sea lion. Your mental health is important.

Though, every single time the anti-queer brigade comes out for a new DA game, I sit there thinking 'have you bozos ever played any DA game, like, ever?' My guess is nope.

Negative review

While I'm incredibly grateful that I can play this game, because I really hope the story actually starts soon, (yes, I said it, the pacing on this is terrible, and I'm both an editor and a writer, I have a clue). I hate to say... I am soooo glad I didn't buy it. Or I'd be demanding a refund. I didn’t actually look at the price tag, but it must’ve been around $80 Canadian. Given our cost of living crisis, that's obscene but whatever. Games are expensive.

It's just not worth that much in its current state. Sure. Games on release often have bugs. I kinda hate spending money to be an unpaid beta tester. BG3 had nowhere near as many.

My computer comes down right around the middle of the minimum and recommended specs. DA4 doesn't even make it get hot like BG3 makes it. So I'm really thinking glitchy game vs computer issues. Considering I'm not the only one it's happening to... welp. (I looked the glitch up, it's pretty common.)

5 out of 10 loads, my character glitches back to the stock elf body. And if I continue playing, it corrupts my saves and they won't load. It has also happened mid-battle, too. So I have to figure out which save to go back to before the glitch bit. Which, without pics in the save files is fun /s.

'Balanced' play isn’t. I play on tactician/hard in most games. I'm on balanced, and keep fucking dying. TBH I'm not extremely awesome with the controls and moves yet, but I'm not bad either. I honestly just think the bad guys are too overpowered (way too fast, hit too hard, and it takes too long to break their armour) for beginning levels. And yes, I have my Rook in the best armour I currently have. Maybe if I could carry more than 3 potions, it wouldn't matter as much, but IDEK man.

And you know what isn't actually any fun in games? Dying a lot. Also? Having to drop my difficulty level for regular bad guys less than ten hours into the game. It's still teaching me moves ffs, so is sorta the tutorial. I'm not a 'get gud' type. I think that's ridiculous. Gaming is supposed to be fun. If it makes it more fun to drop the level for a boss fight or whatever, more power to you. But I usually don't have to until end-game material. If I have to at all. It's honestly pretty rare. Load time is ridiculous, so every time an over-powered not-a-fucking-darkspawn slams my rogue (which I swear shouldn't be possible, I know how to fight with rogues, they're my first and favourite class), I get creamed because I'm bloody stuck in a place I shouldn't get stuck in.

I know they had testing on this. Wasn't that why the date was pushed back? My memory isn't great since COVID but I think I might’ve seen that somewhere.

Solavellans will likely be disappointed in the first seven hours. You see Solas twice. He may as well not even be in the game.

And I really hate to say this, but I'm just bored. I wasn’t itching to play it like I usually am with good games. (If a game catches me up, it's about the only thing I want to do.) I still loaded it up tonight, didn’t have anything better to do. (Because I'd probably have done that instead.) I'm mostly playing so I know what happens in the story myself. And I was hoping we'd get some answers to all this lore that lives in my head, rent free. So, whatever, I'm still hoping it will catch me up. I'll keep playing in hopes we actually get something resembling a story at some point soon.

And the number of editorial errors is ridiculous. Both developmental and copy.

'Cause bodies can't decompose in the Anderfels? Because nothing external lives there? Granted, I have specialized knowledge there (former forensic anthropologist) but, that isn't remotely how decomp works.

Does your 3 week old raw hamburger not rot because it was in a cold, dark place without any external decomposers? (My 17 year old knew the correct answer to that, so did my 12 year old.)

The primary forms of humanoid/mammalian decomposition come from inside us. Bugs don't even start showing up for a bit. Why do you think bodies bloat? Our gut bacteria going wild. Why do you think bodies are routinely embalmed? No bugs (usually) in a funeral home or morgue either.

And y'know? I actually outright told Epler on Twitter (before it went to complete hell) that he needed a better editor or 4 after playing DAI. And DAV already has more editorial issues than I noticed in the whole first half of DAI. Way to prove my point.

I'm an exacting editor. I'm pretty good at it. And I don't expect perfection in anything. Perfectionism is a trauma response, after all. But so many errors so soon? Really?

I'm not even getting into the story issues. Because I'm still hoping we actually, y'know, get to a story? And if I'm really lucky? That story will cover some of the glaring errors.

But so far? I'm not impressed. I've never, since I started playing DA games, been fucking bored.

Thess vs Return of the Demos

Yeah, I'm following a theme on entry titles. Sue me.

Magical Bakery - It's adorable, a little limited in the demo, and slightly janky in a couple of its controls. But basically a bakery management sim. Not as fun or as intuitive as Critter Cafe, but more beautiful. So that one's a maybe.

Luma Island - This is another one in the Stardew Valley / Olive Town / Wylde Flowers farming sim, but I like this one a lot more than I do most of the others. There's no stamina bar, for a start. Things grow at a reasonable pace. The mechanics are varied, as are the collectables. I mostly get frustrated at these things because I run out of time or stamina in a given day to do all the things I want to do, and this game just threw that whole mechanic out the window, and all to the better. I WANT IT.

Whispers of the Eyeless - Cultist simulator with RPG elements of a kind. Most of it's hand-drawn, turn-based combat in some areas, interesting and suitably creepy.

The House of Tesla - This is something in the vein of The Room; mechanical puzzles, messing with the set dressing etc. But with this one, it's based loosely on the inventions of Nikola Tesla. Blue Brain Games seems to do this one, given that they did a whole series of The House of Da Vinci, which I assume is similar, but without the electricity. I liked The Room series, so ... yeah, looks like a whole new bunch of games just made the list. (My wish list has become scary.)

My Party Needs An Alchemist - This is cute. Simple but satisfying potion-making mechanics, joining up with an adorable little chibi adventuring party to collect ingredients, and make potions to keep them alive. It's definitely one to keep in mind.

Spilled! - It's like that new Dredge DLC, if the new Dredge DLC was really janky with its controls. Basically you drive your boat around cleaning oil and sludge out of the water. Yeah, I prefer Dredge.

Mindlock: The Apartment - This one seems to be an interactive story kind of thing, but the first couple of minutes kind of felt like Silent Hill 4 if Henry Townsend was a nihilst Millennial instead of ... whatever era of nihilist he actually was. You know, grumpy about the entire world instead of "My door is chained up, there's a hole in my bathroom and a mass murderer thinks my flat is his mother". Probably good, but it bugged a bit mid-tutorial so I'll leave it and see if it comes back to me to be rediscovered later.

Well, between a nap and my fortnightly D&D game, it's late, so that's about all I have the spoons for. Hopefully the ones that remain won't just lock themselves out when Next Fest ends tomorrow. Probably not, but it's happened before. I will try to restrain myself from looking at yet more demos, because my wishlist is now officially stupid, and some of those come out really soon. Unfortunately, a fair few of them are ones I really want. I'm going to have to whittle that list down some more - there are plenty on there that I have to admit I will probably never play even if I got them. Still, I guess they're not hurting anything sitting there.

The Big Fairy Multi-Type Shiny Badge Quest!

So, I don't...make videos so I'm gonna live blog mine! There will be screenies and descriptions. Maybe recordings if something funny happens but..

Well the title says it all: I'm doing a Shiny Badge quest, and my targets? FAIRY TYPES.

There has been a change of PLANS. Because shiny hunting is already starting to wear me down a bit, I am going to bite the bullet and go ahead and go MULTI TYPE.

So the rules I'm adhering to are as follows.

The quest does not start until I start my treasure hunt. Meaning I have to get to Mezagosa and do the tutorial stuff.

I can only use shiny fairy types, Nevermind I am going a bit easier on myself and doing a multi-type run, and i, as an armature shiny hunter, am going to allow Sandwiches and Outbreaks. I will not, however, be doing Masuda Method.

I am only counting the Gyms towards this Badge quest. Later, if I finish this I'll do one where I do a shiny in between the star bases and titans too but not this time.

I MUST use the shiny I catch during the gym, however my team for battling the anything else can be made of whatever shinys i choose EXCEPT....

I am going to do ONE LAST hunt before the endgame. Spoilers: i am going to hunt one last shiny type before fighting Sada. That makes a total of 9 hunts.

Dupe and non fairy shinies go in the box. If i get more than one of a mon I am going to nickname and wonder trade. : ) So if you get a shiny and the OT is Riley with the ID No. of 474896 das me. <3

This is NOT a nuzlock. That being said...

I will not be using potions or revives in battle. In between fights? yes. IN them. no.

I am using level caps: I cannot be higher level than the current gym's strongest Pokemon. Any pokenon who go above that cap will be boxed before the fight.

I am not counting Tera types. A pokemon that is not fairy but has a fairy tera type still doe snot count. Tera wont matter as I am going multi-type

I can only use Terastlizing during gyms and Only in a pinch. I HAVE to save it as a hail Mary.

I must battle trainers. I can only skip trainers at the start but once I have my first shiny i have to backtrack and battle them!

I FORGOT THAT I HAVE TO NICKNAME ALL OF MY MONS. Thankfully as of the edit i did to this, I HAVEN'T FOUND A SHINY YET.

OK now that you have it, I need to know: first impressions of KOA? <3

I like it, so far! I like the combat system (CHAKRAMS!!!) and how flexible it is. You can literally play any class/combo you want to, and gah, I'm loving it so much?? [My character is a Dokkalfar Disciple called Arlyn, with Faeblades as primary and chakrams as secondary].

I like the Fate system, though I think I've only used it once (in the tutorial, lol). I like the mechanic of having weapons and armor degrade over time, and having to repair them. The lockpicking is interesting, but I have a feeling I'll get tired of doing the mini-game with time. I miss having companions, I think DA has got me spoiled for that. I still don't know entirely what I'm doing as far as the skills are concerned, I don't know what's the best one to pick - I suck at dispelling and I've been cursed twice on easy levels! There's such a wide variety of potions, it's a bit overwhelming? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong somewhere because I never seem to have enough gold for training (and like... I'll make ~200 gold on a quest but it'll cost me four times that to repair my gear after the quest??)

I haven't a clue about any of the lore and it's really interesting to learn about it along the way. (Fun fact: for the first few hours I was playing I was so confused who "the Fae" were, because I thought Dokkalfar and Ljosalfar were Fae lol). I can see touches from different RL cultures and it's quite interesting.

Gameplay has some issues, mainly with camera controls, it goes crazy at the worst moments (coughwhenfightingspiderscough) but nothing awful. Graphics kinda remind me of DA2, which... I guess I expected more from a remaster?

Sorry, this got really long, haha. Basically, hell yeah chakrams! And it's scratching the rpg itch quite well. I can see myself replaying it (though maybe not ALL the side quests...). If you have any tips, that would be great!

No, a mage amputee could absolutely still perform magic! In fact I kind of wonder if they could even use their magic like Julian Keller pre prosthesis.

WoTv1 has a whole section on magic. It explains that while sure, mages are capable of using their magic for simple things, they generally don’t, just for the same reason you wouldn’t chop vegetables with a greatsword. They are taught to only use magic when necessary–But what is necessary would be different from person to person, yeah? So like, while it wouldn’t be necessary for a mage who is perfectly capable of say, carrying a heavy box of something on their own, perhaps a mage with back issues for example might use magic to help with that?Also I have a hard time believing that there aren’t some mages who are like, psh, screw that anyway here’s my latest beauty tutorial on how to perm your hair with magic like Jon Bon Jovi.

There is a part in DA:2′s quest Wayward Son, where two slavers will comment that they heard mages can’t do magic if you bind their hands, but this is entirely false. While a mage may use their hands or a staff in performing magic, it is not necessary, and we have seen that mages can cast spells without any hand movements at all. 

Magic doesn’t come from a mage’s hands, it is in their blood. Like, literally. Mages draw on their personal reservoir of mana to cast spells.

Basically, all magic comes from the Fade, and a mage’s mana levels measure that mage’s connection to the Fade. While every living creature has mana to a degree, it is only those with high enough levels that are able to cast spells.Mages themselves have different degrees of mana. There are very powerful mages like Dreamers, who’s connection to the Fade is so strong they can enter it at will without lyrium or blood magic, and there are not so powerful mages, who might choose to instead use their abilities to augment physical ones, i.e. Arcane Warriors.(This is also detailed in Ch5 of the RPG book.)

EDIT: Okay, I just realized a simple comparison to explain this - Think of magic as the Force in Star Wars. It’s everywhere, in everything, but only jedi can use it to do cool shit, just like mages.
