how would rafe and or jj treat his daughter?
rafe would be extremely protective. he would have his daughter’s location on his phone and check where she is when he hasn’t seen her. very strict when she starts dating boys, warning them that they better not hurt her or they will have a big problem. he wants to have her as close to him as possible, constantly keeping an eye on her. when she went to school for the first time, he was anxious all day long, the worst possible scenarios wandering through his head. he also spoils her rotten, buying her whatever she wants ‘cause he hates seeing his princess upset.
jj would be such a fun dad. he’d teach his daughter surfing and all the other activities he used to do as a kid/teen. he also takes her with him when he hangs out with the pogues because they love her like a family. jj and your daughter have a lot of inside jokes together, secretly making fun of you behind your back. he would do anything to see his daughter smile, it never fails to distract him from all his problems. he wants to protect his sweet little girl from all the evil in the world, including his own dad, and makes sure she grows up in a healthy and fun environment.

JJ’s first child is a boy, and his whole world falls apart. From the moment you talked about kids, JJ knew he would the best father to a little girl, he was confident that it would be easier and it would click for him. So when you find out that your first baby is a boy, he spirals. Not only is he terrified that the kid will be like him, but hes terrified that he’ll end up like his dad. But when he holds your son for the first time, everything changes, as your son curls his hand around JJ’s finger, he realizes that he could never, in any situation, do anything to hurt this child. At first, it makes him emotional, wondering what it was about him that allowed his father to treat him the way he did, because he couldn’t even imagine scolding the little baby in his arms.
Of course, your son is so obviously JJ’s son, the blonde hair and tan skin is a telltale indication of that, but he is JJ’s personality embodied in a 5 year old. The mischievous giggles that come from his room before he emerges with all of his toy cars somehow attached to each other, or the proud smile he gives you both after bringing mud into the house.
He’s a gentleman, JJ makes sure that he is. You’re both often complimented on his perfect manners, saying thank you at 4 years old without being reminded or prompted. And when you have your first girl of many, little maybank is the perfect gentleman and big brother. Holding their hands when they’re still learning to walk, wiping milk off of their chins, fixing their little hats and clothes. Though, again he is a carbon copy of JJ, and though it’s not often, there are times that JJ Junior will come running with to you and JJ with a naughty smile and taking you into the playroom, just to see your daughter covered in truck stickers and washable markers. He’ll put worms on your daughters leg or hand and giggle until her lip began to wobble, quickly taking them away before a meltdown ensued. And of course, JJ junior is just as much responsible as you and JJ for spoiling your daughter. Of course he’s spoiled just as much as your daughter, but it’s adorable to see him split his ice cream because she’s already finished hers, or let her pick the show or movie every night without a second thought.
JJ takes him fishing, and your favorite picture in the i tire world is baby maybank holding up a small fish while sitting on JJ’s lap, especially because they look so incredibly similar in that photo. JJ is the person baby maybank comes running to first thing in the morning, and the first person he calls for when he’s had a nightmare.

thinking about co-parenting with JJ and how you and JJ were dating for about a year when you found out you were pregnant at 19. you and JJ were dumbfounded (as if you two were using protection) but since you and JJ were just so young when you got pregnant and you both couldn’t get your shit together, constantly arguing over stupid shit your whole relationship, you eventually decided co-parenting would be the best thing for your baby. JJ wasn’t thrilled with the whole co-parenting thing because he never wanted his kids to grow up in a broken home, but he also knew it was better for the baby to not have to grow up around the constant arguing. fast forward to when the baby is about a year old and you and JJ are still going strong (kind of) with the co-parenting. JJ gets the baby on the weekends due to his busy work schedule but of course he’s stopping by your house every night after work to tell his baby goodnight. when the baby is all good and settled, tucked in tight and snoozing away.. JJ is absolutely trying to get into your pants. he still wants you. he still wants his baby mama. he doesn’t want any of the other women that constantly throw themselves at him. he wants you. so he’ll take you in any way he can. and you’ll let him because of course you still care about him and miss him. then when you end up pregnant again (even tho you guys were only supposed to be co-parenting) everyone is confused likeeee huh??
ultimately you and him end up getting back together to see if you can leave the toxicity behind and do it right this time.

jj who has to leave for work every morning with his pregnant girlfriend that hates him leaving for work every morning yet always gets up to help him get ready and gives him a kiss and let’s him say by to the baby all while groaning abt how much she wants him to stay home
she's so me
"Don't gooo," you drag out, holding onto JJ with your arms wrapped around him. Every step he makes, you make one too, following him closely and refusing to let go.
"I don't wanna leave you, baby, but I have too," he says. He turns around in your arms, his hands finding your face. "Y'know I hate being away from my girls."
He presses a chaste kiss to your forehead, and when he pulls away, he's met with your sorrowful eyes. A whine emits from his lips and he leans his forehead against yours.
"Don't give me that face, I won't be able to walk out of here."
"So my plan's working? Good to know," you smirk. JJ shakes his head, laughing softly. You both know it's killing him to deny you and your wishes, but bills have to be paid, and food needs to be put on the table. Not to mention the rapid-growing fetus inside you that will need to be taken care of.
"I'll be home before you know it. Just stay in bed, get all cozy for me and relax. Need my queen and princess safe 'n sound."
You deflate, your lips curling back into their pout from earlier. "You're mean."
"You're beautiful," he counters. He drops down to his knees, his hands finding your round belly. He kisses it, muttering something to your baby about being nice to her mama. Then he rises back onto his feet and kisses you once, twice, and then three times. "I love you. 'N I can't believe I'm the one sayin' this, but please behave."
His warning, although teasing, is solely to make sure you don't run around the house all day doing errands that he can very well complete himself.
"Fine. I'll lay in our bed and waste my life away," you joke. "And I love you too. Now get your ass out of here before I throw it back in our bed."
He gives you a look. "Well now you're just torturing me."

The Maybank Zoo
Word Count: 941
Pairing: Dad!JJ
JJ Maybank never thought he’d see the day his daughter toddled inside with a toad in her hands. He never cared for the creatures, and you were absolutely terrified of them. So you couldn’t help but shriek when she came inside with a large frog cradled in her small hands.
“Daddy, look!” She beamed, pushing her hands up toward him.
“What do you have there, bug?”
“A froggie! Uncle B saw it on the boat: he’s hungry, daddy; we have ta’ feed him!”
“Yeah?” He smiled as he pushed her sweaty hair away from her forehead, and she nodded. “What does he eat? Should we get him… pizza?” The laugh his sweet girl let out made his heart squeeze as he tried to commit this moment to memory.
“Daddy! Froggies don’t eat pizza! You’re so silly!” She giggled as she placed the wriggling frog on the dining room table.
You let out a shiver as the small amphibian wiped its eyes clean. “Jesse James, get that frog off of my
table!”
“No mama! He’s so hungry,” Florence whined.
“You can feed him outside, bug. He doesn’t need to dirty my table,.” you frowned.
“He can’t eat outside, mama! Where is he supposed to sit?”
Yeah, mama, where is he supposed to sit?” JJ smirked as he nudged your arm with his elbow, eyebrows raised.
“On the floor, where he lives!”
C'mon, daddy, we have to find him some crickets!” She smiles and takes his hand before leading him back outside, leaving you alone with the slimy frog.
“Woah!” Florence gasped as John B hauled a huge fish into the boat.
“See that Flo-Flo?” He grins.
“Yup! He’s just so big—he’s huge! Daddy, he’s bigger than my hand!”
JJ can’t help but laugh at her comparison, considering almost everything is bigger than her tiny hand.
“I see that! You wanna name him?”
“Oh! I’m gonna name him Nemo!”
“Nah, this is my dinner, bug.” John B. clarified as he tossed the fish into the ice bucket.
Her face drops into one of absolute horror, turning to JJ.
“But he’s my friend, Uncle B. I named him! I was gonna take him home,” she frowned
and crossed her chubby little arms over her chest.
“What about the other two fish at home? Your two Nemos?”
“They need a friend!”
“Baby, this fish will eat your Nemos,” JJ explains.
Her eyes widen, and she turns to John B. “Eat him, Uncle B!”
As her uncles and dad continued to fish, Florence sat cross-legged with her cute little bucket hat as she named each and every worm in the bucket.
“An’ you’re Mrs. Stretch, ‘cause you’re so long!” She squealed to herself as she placed it to the side. She wiped her hands on her little shorts before she swiped her hand over her sweaty forehead. She stood and wobbled over to where Pope sat with a beer. As she plopped herself into his lap, she raised the hand still holding the fascinatingly large worm up for him to see.
“I named her Mrs. Stretch cause she’s huge! Uncle Pope she’s as long as my foot - yet another laughable comparison.
“I think she’s longer than that, babe! That’s a Whipworm,” he said as he let her place the creature in his hands.
“You playin’ with my bait, bug?” JJ teased.
“‘M not playing, daddy! I’m takin’ care of ‘em,” she said matter-of-factly.
The name bug dates back to Florence’s very first word. Sitting against JJ in the garden, Florence sat in your lap, facing away, as she admired all the new and interesting sights. An ant had crawled up her little leg, and instead of shrieking in horror like most babies would, she smiled, looked back at her parents, and pointed.
“What’s that, Flo?” JJ cooed.
She all but cackled at the insect that tickled her delicate skin as it walked.
“Is that a little bug, Flo-Flo?” You smiled and said, “Is it so funny, baby?”
“Bug!” She exclaimed.
Wha-?” You gasped.
“Did she? That’s her first word? Baby, she said her first word!”
“Oh my god! She said bug! Did you hear it, J?”
“What’s that, baby?” He asked as he took her tiny hand.
“Bug! Ba!” Florence squealed.
“Are you our little bug, huh, baby? Our sweet little bug?” You giggled as you held her up to litter kisses all over her cheeks.
Although you and JJ didn't care for the slimy creatures Florence loved to bring home, you couldn’t help but feel your heart melt at the absolute tenderness she showed each and every animal she found. How could you say no to her beautiful heart?
That’s how you ended up with two cats, a Betta fish, a small minnow, and an endless amount of animal friends needing to spend the night. It’s all worth it to see the way she tucked her hands behind her back and leaned down to press a kiss to your eldest cat’s head as gently as possible. Before whispering goodnight wishes to him. She moved on to climb onto a dining chair to bid your other cat goodnight with a light pet. It was a routine, really; your cats were always first, then she would turn off the lights in the fish tank and smile at her scaly friends before moving onto whatever animal was seeking refuge in your home that night. She’d attempt to tuck the temporary Maybank in and whisper promises of good dreams and being returned home in the morning. You and JJ would watch on with full, proud hearts as she showed such care and respect to the animals in your home.

JJ's got a little family and they're just having a day on the town. CWs:Mean old ladies, protective dad jj, mom reader, preschooler daughter, taking a pregnancy test, implied smut, I think he calls her momma once or twice, no grammar, I avoided y/n but I don't know if I did it well; let me know if I missed anything Wc:3.9k
Well this was an incredibly self indulgent fic because the scenario was brewing in my lil noggin for at least two months and then I was like well it's doing no good in there and the only reason I even watched obx was for this man, and this man alone. And so here you go. I haven't read this since I wrote it I just wanted to post something before I start posting my long fic.
"Babe, are you even listening?" JJ finally caught his wife's attention from the ring on her left hand.
"Yes, but look." She held her hand up to let the diamond catch the light, sending rainbows flying across the ceiling of the car as she shifted it back and forth. "It's so shiny."
"I know, love." He took her hand and kissed her fingers. "That's why I picked it, but enough of that we have things to do! A list to check off! You ready Tiny?" He called to the back seat.
"Mhm, all ready," his 4 year old daughter, Iris, giggled from the back seat.
"Let's go then. I'll get her, you get a cart, ok?"
"Sounds good to me," JJ answered, then left on his assigned mission with a salute.
Iris laughed with her mom, "Daddy's so silly."
"Yes he is baby, you have no idea." She finally got all the clips undone just as JJ was bringing the cart over, so all she had to do was lift her up and into the cart.
"Weeeee," Iris cheered as she landed in the seat. "Again, again."
"We can do it again when we get back, we gotta get the stuff first, silly." JJ made a face at her while the three of them walked into the store.
He went through all the pockets in his shorts until he found the list. "Divide and conquer?" he suggested
"Absolutely not, I'm not leaving you two alone together and I'm definitely not letting you off on your own. Let's go." She led them down the produce aisle and took the list from JJ. "You got a pen?"
JJ handed her one and she crossed the first item off the list putting a bag of grapes in the cart. Iris made grabby hands towards it and she gave in, setting the bag in her lap.
***
Halfway down the list and a third of the way through the store JJ and Iris started tossing grapes in each other's mouths.
"You want one, baby?" He asked, offering her a grape while she scanned the shelves for the right brand of flour.
"No, I'm ok." She looked around like she was trying to remember something. "Ummm, I'm gonna go grab something. I forgot it when we were over there 'cause it's not on the list. I'll be right back. Don't eat them all!" She pecked JJ on the cheek before disappearing down the aisle.
Iris crossed her arms on the handle bar and laid her forehead on it, "I'm booored."
"Me too but we gotta stay here till your mama gets back, ok kid?" He copied her posture and tilted his head so he could look at her better. She had his hair and eyes but besides that she looked exactly like her mother.
"Fine," she groaned and he offered his fist out for her.
"Ready?" he asked and she nodded.
"Rock, paper, scissors," they both said at the same time. JJ put up scissors and she put up rocks. "Awww you got me, again?"
"Yeah." They played for a few more rounds until JJ saw his wife coming back down the aisle with her hands behind her back. She was walking quickly with her hair swishing behind her. He furrowed his eyebrows in confusion at what she could be rushing from. He worried something had happened in the 5 minutes she was away.
She threw the small boxes in the cart behind the other bags and nodded her head behind her at an old lady giving them dirty looks. "Don't say anything, just keep walking ok?" she whispered to him while trying to act natural. She wasn't quiet enough because Iris still heard and asked what was wrong. "Nothing baby, don't worry about it." She stroked her daughter's golden hair back from her face and kissed her forehead, taking control of the cart. JJ put a comforting hand on her back as they passed the old lady still giving them the stink eye.
She said something under her breath. "Excuse me?" JJ said defensively.
"I just think irresponsible children like you can't make responsible parents."
"And what makes you say that?" He put his hands on his hips and stared the old woman down.
"JJ please." She rubbed her thumb over Iris's hand.
"No, I'd like to know, what makes you think my wife and I are irresponsible parents?"
She squared up to him, "You're far too young, too young to be married. You don't know what real life is yet how can you raise a child?"
"And you know all this after what? Following my wife for however many aisles?!" Iris took the phone with her favorite game offered to her, her mother knowing JJ wouldn't let up once he started.
"From the way she looked at the ! I knew she was unfit just after one look!" JJ looked back at his wife with a look of surprised confusion. She only replied with a shrug and nodded from Iris to the end of the aisle. He nodded yes back and she took the cart back up the aisle, not wanting to involve her daughter in this argument. She stopped a quarter of the way up when the man that was with the old woman before walked down to where she and JJ were arguing. "Just look at that outfit what kind of mother would walk around like that?!" The 'unfit' mother in question looked at her outfit, cutoff shorts of a reasonable length and one of JJ's faded old shirts cut into a crop top, and cocked an eyebrow. Not her most fashionable look but she just thought she was going to the grocery store with her family, not being ambushed by an impromptu episode of What Not to Wear. "Then I come here and find her already with a child. And you? So disrespectful!"
The man walked past their cart and nodded to Iris and her mother, before stopping in front of the woman and JJ. He was taller than JJ and much bigger. Despite his overbearing stature he put a hand on the woman's arm and sternly said, "Let's go, leave this nice family alone."
"No! I was just doing my shopping when I saw this- this hussy walk past." JJ's nostrils flared once and he dug his nails into his palms. The other man put a hand on her shoulder and stopped her right there.
"What is wrong with you? What have these people ever done to you to speak to her that way?"
She sputtered for an answer and JJ just shook his head and said, "It doesn't matter. Never speak to any one like that again, especially my wife." He turned back to his family and he took his wife's hand. "Let's go momma."
She blushed hard, "What did I say about calling me that when we're out?" she said with a glare.
"Nothing? I always call you that when Tiny's around." He shrugged, not knowing what she was referring to.
"Not that, you know how I feel when you call me your wife."
He finally understood her message. "Oh, but you are my wife, I just want everyone to know it." He kissed her jaw before turning to the freezers filled with ice cream. He noticed she went right for the ice cream she ate nonstop just under five years ago. "Hm, haven't had that one in a while." She shrugged with a nod. "You needa tell me something?"
She looked at him and he half expected her to look like a deer in headlights but she just calmly smiled. "When we get home."
"She's getting tired, why don't you take her to the car and I'll finish here?" She handed the empty bag of grapes to the cashier and quickly explained they ate them all but she's not going to leave without paying. There was still a bit in the cart, including the second bag of grapes.
"Are you sure? We can stay and help."
"Jay, she's falling asleep. I'll be fine, you go ahead."
"I don't know, that cart looks pretty heavy." He put his hands in his pockets and rocked up on his feet. Her only answer was to raise her eyebrows.
"You're a mess," She kissed Iris's head, "You're gonna go to the car with daddy, baby ok?"
Iris nodded a little and when JJ picked her up she whispered the tiredest little "weeee" she could muster.
She and the cashier both smiled at the little girl half way asleep in her father's arms.
He put her down in her car seat then went to the trunk to look for a blanket when he heard a painfully nasal voice behind him. He tried his best to ignore it and give Iris her blanket even though a part of him was just itching to ask her who she thinks she is that she can speak to his wife that way. He brushed Iris's hair out of her face and made sure her blanket was tucked in. He shut the door and walked just ahead of the car to see if his wife made it out of the store yet.
2 seconds later she stepped out with the cart full of brown paper bags. He watched her look both ways, and the way her hair moved with her long strides and the soft breeze. He was too focused on her to notice the old woman make her way over and intercept the cart on his way over to her.
"My son finally left so I can say whatever I want now! You aren't fit to be a mother at your age! Look at what you're feeding your poor daughter! You children don't understand how to properly raise children. Letting her pick out everything she wants, shoving the phone in her face as soon as it gets too hard. I bet you're some of those "gentle parents" too, aren't you?" The young woman just looked bored out of her mind, which looking back probably only encouraged the old woman.
JJ was worried he'd have to intervene but he didn't want to leave their daughter alone in the car, so he stood at the car but out far enough so he could watch. He knew how she gets with confrontation like this, especially with getting yelled at and strangers. But she held her own.
"Is that all, I'd really like to just get home with my family if you don't mind." She kept eye contact and spoke calmly. "I honestly don't know what you think gives you the right to yell at me and my husband, especially right in front of our daughter, when you've only see us do what? Make her a respectful, happy kid? Buy some lube? Swear? Fuckin' Christ lady leave me and my family alone." The old woman was obviously shell shocked so she just pushed the cart right past and started loading the trunk with JJ's help.
He noticed her shaky hands and unsteady breathing. "Hey, hey, hey, I got this, ok? You go wait with her inside ok?" He quickly wiped underneath her eyes and she nodded her head.
Once he finished and got into the drivers seat, she'd had a chance to calm down. "I'm so proud of you," when she finally looked at him he swiped the sparkles lining her water line away. "I love you, so much. Tiny loves you way more than I can even describe. You did so good baby, so good." He stroked the side of her head as he spoke and kissed her head, "You ready to go?"
She swallowed the shrinking lump in her throat, "Yeah," she breathed out with a nod.
***
They laughed the whole ride home but were careful not to wake Iris. JJ did whatever he could to brighten the mood and he wasn't sure if she was laughing at his dumb jokes to stroke his ego or fake-it-till-you-make-it, or she actually thought he was funny. Any way, it worked for him.
"Should I wake her up?" JJ asked.
"No, I'll just bring her in."
"No you will not!"
"What? Why?" She cocked an eyebrow at him.
"Because, I have a sneaking suspicion at what your little..." he wiggled his finger in the air. "surprise is, and so, I will be taking care of everything you will let me take care of." He said with a pointed finger wagging at her.
"You're ridiculous," she laughed while getting the smallest two bags and walking up to unlock the door so JJ could bring Iris in.
"But I'm right!"
"Shhhhhh," she giggled while setting the bags on the counter. "Maybe, maybe not. We shall see, very soon."
"How soon?"
"How soon can you take care of all the groceries?"
"So fuckin' soon." He kissed the side of her head before speed walking Iris into her room and tucking her in. He made sure all the curtains were all the way shut before he ran down the hall and out to the car, taking as many bags as he could carry at a time. She thought he was like the Flash with how fast he put everything away. When he put the last bottle in the door of the refrigerator and rushed to stand right in front of her.
"Is it soon yet?" He was excited as a little puppy and she nodded while her lips were still on her water bottle. He pulled it away and put it on the counter.
"What the fuck Jay?!" She stared at him wide eyed and he just looked right at her before walking down the hall.
"Chop chop!"
"You're the worst," she mumbled under her breath while grabbing the three rectangular boxes off the counter.
***
She set the timer on her phone and they both sat with their backs against the bathtub. She lazily slung her head to face him, he did the same.
"I'm not even sure, I just think maybe."
He grabbed her hand and rested them on the small, soft rug. "Whatever it says, I'll be happy. It doesn't have to happen right now, there's loooads of time. No matter what it says, I won't be dissapointed, ok?" He kissed the back of her hand still connected to his and she nodded.
They sat like that for a few more minutes until the timer went off. "Ready?" he asked when he set her phone back down.
"Mhm, I'll flip one, you flip the other and we both flip the last?"
"Mhm." They counted down together "3,2,1" clack.
Two lines.
Two lines.
Pregnant.
They both stared at each other for a few moments before he lifted her in a tight hug. She kicked her feet behind herself before wrapping her legs around his waist. They stayed like that for a few more minutes, just being near each other, feeling each other, breathing each other in.
"I want ice cream," she said through a wet whisper into his neck.
"Allow me, m'darlin'." He carried her into the kitchen while she giggled the whole way. He sat her on the counter top while he got the ice cream out for her.
"You're not gonna let me do anythin, are you?"
"No, I will not. For the next 9-odd months you won't have to lift a finger."
"But what if I want to?"
"As long as it's less than Tiny."
Her face dropped as she stuck the spoon back in the ice cream. "I can't hold my baby?" She pouted.
"She's gonna have to be promoted from baby." He laughed.
"But she's my baby."
"You'll have a new baby."
"Why can't they both be my babies?" She laid down on the counter, holding the ice cream on her stomach, savoring the final few weeks of not having a mound in the way.
"Hmm, I don't see why not."
"Yayyy." She smiled around the spoon.
"When can we tell her?" He sat with his chin laying on his arms next to her head.
"I think after the first scan and all that, so she can have a picture."
"Yay," he cheered and held his tongue out so she would give him some ice cream.
He gagged and ran to the sink to spit it out the second the spoon touched his tongue. She just shrugged and licked it off herself.
"I forgot how disgusting that is. How can you eat that?"
"I can't, unless I'm pregnant." She sat up on her elbows and set the ice cream down next to her. "You remember I tried it after Tiny was born and we had some left over and I almost threw up. Fuckin' revolting. I don't even know."
***
2 weeks later
"Hey Tiny! Where you at?" JJ yelled through the Chateau.
"Daddy!" Iris yelled back, running into the kitchen to meet her parents. Sarah and John B watched her but they spent most of the time outside since most of the interior was being renovated before the wedding.
Sarah walked inside and made her way over to the other young woman, "Sooo? How was it? Any fun and exciting news?"
"It went very very well, but unfortunately I am sworn to secrecy at the moment. At the request of JJ, he wants to wait until we're all together to avoid any favoritism."
""Cause you don't want it to go like last time?"
"Exactly, what a disaster that was." She slapped a hand over her mouth at what she just admitted and pushed Sarah into the other room. She shut the door and held Sarah by her shoulders. "You cannot tell anyone. JJ will have a fit," she whisper yelled.
"You have my word," Sarah crossed her heart and they pinky promised. "If I can have yours that I get exclusive godmother rights."
"I can't promise anything yet but I will see what I can do."
"How's the forecast look though?"
"I will say, pretty good, but you didn't hear it from me. And you cannot tell John B. JJ has to or we'll have to keep having more until he finally gets the chance. And I personally would like to keep it at a solid 2 because I don't think I could handle being outnumbered by more mini JJs."
***
When they finally got home they sat Iris down at the kitchen table and they sat across from her.
"We have some news for you, Tiny," JJ started.
"A surprise?" She stood on her chair.
"Yes baby, a surprise. But you have to sit down to get it." Her mom said, soft at first but the second in her sweet mom voice. Gentle but laced with authority, like hidden vegetables.
JJ pulled out the row of ultrasound pictures and slid them across the table to her.
"What is it?"
"What do you think it is?" She asked while JJ just watched his daughter try to piece everything together.
"A bean...in a dark room. A bean x-ray?"
"That's actually pretty close, but it's not quite an x-ray. It's an ultrasound, and that's what the doctor used to look in my belly."
"Why?"
"To look at that."
"What's that then?" She pointed to the little blob in the center.
They both looked at JJ so he could answer. He was caught a little off guard but composed himself quickly. "Uh it's a baby, or well it will be soon, eventually."
"You're having a baby?" She looked at her mother who was beaming back at her.
"Yeah."
"Where?" Not a very specific question but she's known her daughter long enough to know what she means so she pointed to her lower abdomen.
"Here, and this is where you used to be."
"Can I touch?" She nodded and Iris came over and stood between her legs. She lifted her mother's shirt and put her hand on her stomach.
"A little lower baby," She moved her hand down to the right spot. "Right there." She looked from her daughter back to JJ who was almost crying. She took his hand while their daughter spoke to the baby.
"Hi baby," she used the same tone her mother used with her. "I'm Iris, you're inside momma right now, that's why it's so dark. You're a little bean." She giggled but her head whipped around at the sound of JJ's sniffle. "Bye baby, I have to go talk to daddy now." She kissed the spot where her hand was and climbed up JJ's chair to hug him properly.
She was only 4 but she knew better than to ask why he was crying, her mom explained it once. Sometimes people just cry, there doesn't have to be a reason, but sometimes they feel so much it just overflows. She explained it with a glass of water after Iris had a bad day and had to get picked up early. She sat her on the counter and got a glass from the cabinet,  "Sometimes when we feel a lot of things, or a lot of one thing it's just too much and we cry to let it out." The water started spilling over the sides. "Then we feel better." She dumped out the extra and handed her the glass while whipping the glossy streaks off her blotchy face.
She was proud of her daughter and rubbed her back before clearing the table. When she finished she stood behind JJ and kissed the top of his head. "Let's go lay down baby."
"I'm not tired," he laughed while making fun of Iris a little.
"Then we'll watch a movie," She rubbed his shoulder and they all went into their room, the bed was big enough and Iris was small enough so they all fit comfortably. They turned on Iris's favorite movie and snuggled together with Iris laying on him and his wife's head on his chest, cuddled into his side. He had an arm around each of them and Iris dozed off quickly. He smiled down at both of them, so blissfully content at the life he built for himself he never even thought possible.
"My two best girls," he whispered and leaned down to kiss both of their heads.
"You're forgetting one." A voice groggily whispered into his chest.
"I thought you were sleeping and we don't know that yet."
"I was. And yes we do, it's definitely a girl. I feel it."
"You do?"
"You don't?" she asked cockily and he sat with it for a moment.
"I do," he whispered back and she giggled before burying herself deeper into him and the blankets.
"Goodnight, I love you, and our family, so much." She kissed him goodnight before adjusting the blankets over all three (four) of them.
"I love you, and Tiny, and Teeny Tiny, so much."

baby girl in the little restaurant high chair and she’s smiling so huge you see her gums and dimples and jjs like “my sweet baby… you still need to eat”
she definitely ends up wearing a lot of her food and probably "sharing" with JJ, which only makes him laugh harder. He's so utterly besotted by his little girl and anyone in the vicinity can see how much he cares, even when she gets fussy or tired he never falters and just rolls with it, trying his best to meet her needs!
even if he and reader aren't even really together at that point, there's definitely a similar moment that she witnesses that makes her want to consider trying a relationship with him!

JJ MAYBANK AS A DAD!
headcanons:
honestly, at first, he was really nervous in being a father. he wanted nothing less than to become his own dad.
but once baby maybank was welcomed into the world, everything changed. it was like he had something to live for again
he became an amazing father. he slept with them most nights when mommy was too tired to get up with them.
he dresses the baby most days. i imagine he’d making matching outfits with him or momma and the baby.
living on the cut means this baby is going to grow up by the water, learning how to surf like it’s walking
specifically if the baby is a girl, he exclusively refers to her and momma as “my queen,” and “our princess”
he and the baby are like best friends. jj is a big kid at heart, and he really lets it shine with his baby.
along with all of this, he works harder than ever before. the pogues help out, babysitting whatever days possible, so that jj and momma can work
there’s gotta be a lactation kink in there somewhere
overall, jj is an amazing dad. of course he makes mistakes, but instead of dwelling on them, he focusses on the lesson made from them.

JJ goes from eating everything but the raisins in trail mix to only eating the raisins because his daughter doesn’t like them. He stops putting the bags of Chex mix back in the cupboard with only the pretzels remaining, now he makes sure to eat all of the pretzels so his baby doesn’t accidentally eat one while she’s not paying attention. He takes the red m&ms and skittles out of the bags because he knows she hates them. She likes to peel her own tangerines, but he always secretly starts it for her because he doesn’t want her to struggle. He eats the crusts off of her sandwiches takes the extra crispy fries off her plate because she doesn’t like them.
He loves her more than anything in the world, and he’s her best friend that she can’t go anywhere without. Of course, she’ll never realize the extent to which his love for her is until she’s much older, but in his eyes, it’s totally worth it.

baby maybank coming a little early, and jj is like trying to calm you (and himself) down and he’s like “just wanted to meet his mama earlier because of how amazing you are to him already”
SHUT UP THIS IS SO DAMN SWEET :'(((((
"okay. stay calm. stay calm," jj breathes, rolling his shoulders back a few times and shaking it out. "i'm trying," you speak through gritted teeth. your eyes squeeze shut as your contraction waves through you, strong and unapologetic. jj's head shoots over to you. "huh? i'm not talking to you. i'm talking to me." you roll your eyes, and though you can't tell if it's due to your pain, you burn to smack him. too bad he's too far away for you to do that. "nice, j." he gives you an uneasy smile. "'m sorry. don't be scared, baby. you got this. you're already such a great mom. i just wanna make sure i'm ready to give my babies everything they need." babies meaning you and the fetus trying to escape the warmth of your womb. and it doesn't do much for you pain-wise, but it does soften you up a little bit. "you're gonna do great. now get me to the hospital before i give birth in our bathroom." he scratches his brow, nodding. "right. yeah. let's do that."

Twenty Six Letters || JJ Maybank
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Warnings and authors note: This is sad, like so sad, my friends say it rips their hearts out. I’m sorry. Title credit to black butterflies and deja vu by the maine (the lyric is “there’s only twenty six letters I can use just to tell you I won’t let go”)
This specific story is an alternate ending to another fic I wrote, but I haven’t got that one transferred here yet, I am in the process of moving all of my works to this blog from my main.
Word Count: 2,350
July 17
Y/N,
The doctors came out and told me they tried everything, but they couldn’t save you. They’re transferring Charlie to the mainland where they have a NICU, they’re life lining her. The amount of police that had to hold me back from hurting that doctor, I’m embarrassed. This was supposed to be our dream, our family. I needed to write my thoughts down, I know you can’t read this, it’s ridiculous. I can’t lose both of you. I love you so much.
JJ
July 19
Y/N,
Charlie weighs a whopping 1 pound, 2 ounces. She’s the tiniest thing I have ever laid eyes on. I’m staying on the mainland until she gets to come home, thanks to the community, really. Sarah started a fundraiser for Charlie’s medical care, your funeral, and the community really showed their support. No word on who did this to you, but I will find out. Charlotte Rose Maybank is a fighter, just like her mother. I love you.
JJ
July 21
Y/N,
Today we laid you to rest. Even though your parents didn’t like me that well, they both put that aside today. John B and Pope had to practically hold me up at the cemetery. We were supposed to grow old and gray together, but today I had to put you six feet under at twenty three. It hit me that I am a widower at twenty-five. I am a single father of a four day old “micro preemie”. I’m at the hospital now. I’m not supposed to be in the NICU this late, but the night nurse knows what happened and can understand my need to be close to the last thing I have of you. I love you more than you will ever know,
JJ
PS: I did as you wished and made JB and Sarah her godparents. They’re coming tomorrow to see her for the first time.
July 25
Y/N,
I spent the night in jail last night. You see, they finally figured out who the pick up belonged to. I hadn’t seen him since we got married two years ago, but I was so pissed off when I went into the jail to talk to Shoupe. I asked him for five minutes with him, which was granted. I was yelling, and I’m not embarrassed about that actually. I told him I was going to make sure he went away for a very long time. That he killed the love of my life, that because of him his fucking granddaughter is fighting for her life right now all because he felt like it was okay to drive drunk. That motherfucker showed no remorse whatsoever. He fucking smirked at me Y/N, so I punched him. Square in the jaw. Of course, I was promptly booked for it, but I was told this morning that they weren’t going to actually press charges because in Shoupe’s eyes he deserved it. They put it on the books as a purely cooling down period. I came back to the hospital, and Charlie is stable. They said if she keeps improving like she is, I might get to hold her for the first time soon. I’m trying to be strong for her, for you, but I miss you so much. You should still be here, she should still be safe and growing inside you. But it wasn’t meant to be. I love you more than the moon and stars,
JJ
August 9
Y/N,
So I haven’t written in a while and that’s because we have a pretty rocking kid, you know? I got to hold her for the first time last week. It was an emotional affair, I was sobbing the moment they placed her on my chest. She’s still so tiny, but she’s gaining weight and is starting to look more like an actual human instead of an alien. I made sure the nurse took a picture when I held her because I want to remember how small she was the first time I held her, even with all the wires and tubes.  I may be writing less frequently but I’m gonna keep writing. It makes me feel better. Like, I’m still close to you with this notebook. I love you, I love you, I love you.
JJ
September 17
Y/N,
Happy two months Lottie Rose. I know we were going to call her Charlie, but the new night nurse started calling her Lottie, and I’ve kind of fallen in love with it. It just fits her. She’s almost three pounds now! I’m so proud of her. It’s wild to me that she would be due in almost six weeks. The doctor expects her to be home by her due date, and I promptly will be taking her to your grave. She’s always going to know how much you loved her, Y/N. I made sure your mom put “Mother of Charlotte” on your headstone. When she’s older I’m gonna take her to our favorite spots. I want her to know who you were, because I know that the person you were, is why she’s here. I love you more than I can count.
JJ
October 31st
Y/N,
Happy Due Date Lottie Rose Maybank! We’re going home today, Y/N. Lottie weighs a whopping 6 pounds now. I’m so proud of her. She is tiny, but she’s gonna catch up fast. She passed her car seat test with flying colors. She can eat from a bottle, but the nurse noticed that she wasn’t as responsive to sound as most of the other babies when they’re ready to go home. She suggested she might just be desensitized to the noise of the hospital, but they wanted to recheck her hearing before we leave, so I am writing this while I wait for them to finish that. I just signed all of her release paperwork. Last night, I was contacted by the local news to do an interview about how Lottie is, and how everything has affected me. I think I should do it, John B and Sarah said they would watch Lottie while I go to the station.
Okay so they brought Lottie back, she didn’t pass her hearing test so we have to set up an appointment for a hearing specialist. Honestly,  if she needs hearing aids it isn’t the biggest deal in the world. I’m not going to love her any less. She’s our kid, she can handle anything that's thrown in her way. I love you bunches,
JJ
December 24
Y/N,
This single dad thing is hard. Tomorrow is Lottie’s first Christmas, and we are going to church with your parents. I know you always liked to go on Christmas and Easter at least, so I thought that could be one tradition I kept with Lottie. I’m also keeping the tradition of buying a personalized ornament every year for the Christmas tree. It’s wild to think that at this time last year, we had just agreed to try for a baby, and this year everything is different. You’re not here, we have a five month old daughter who is the size of a three month old.  I’ve got to tell you, losing your wife brings things into perspective. I want Lottie to have a set of grandparents that love her unconditionally. I’ve spent a lot of time with your mom and sister the last month or so, and I know your mom will love her no matter what. No matter how we get along, Lottie comes first. She’s our priority. Merry Christmas, Baby, I love you.
JJ

Y/N,
One year. You have been gone one long year. This time one year ago, I was working on Pope’s dad’s truck. It seemed like every single siren in the town went out, and I remember thinking “That must be a bad accident.” If only I knew then. If only I knew that in an hour, you would be gone, that I’d be standing in the waiting room of the hospital while they worked on you until they couldn’t anymore. I remember the anger, Shoupe and another officer holding me back before I just buckled in my own grief. I remember your mom and dad coming, having rushed over from the mainland. Your mom knew, as soon she walked in the waiting room where I was a mess on the floor, JB on one side of me, Pope on the other, she knew.  We sobbed together, we became numb together. I vaguely remember telling her they were lifelining Lottie to Raleigh. I remember her looking at me and telling me, “John James, you listen to me. You get to Raleigh, your daughter needs you. Do you hear me? She needs you.” It was the only time in my life I didn’t mind hearing my full name. I didn’t get to see her until she was already two days old. Today we have a happy, healthy, one year old. She’s catching up with kids her age, which kind of shocks the doctors. She’s growing on track, she’s hitting milestones. She just started crawling, but she can already get wherever her little heart desires. I’ve made a conscious effort to not be sad in front of her today. We are having a big party for her, she’s going to love it. I miss you, sweetheart. I love you
JJ

Y/N
Time flies, you know? It seems like yesterday I was bringing Lottie home from the hospital. Where has five years gone? Today, I dropped her off for her first day of kindergarten. We had a long conversation about how if anyone was mean about her hearing aids, to tell her teacher and how it wasn’t a bad thing to ask for help. I want her to have a better school experience than I had, I want her to like school. That didn’t stop me from sobbing like a baby the whole way to work. Of course, my boss knew I’d been crying and just patted my shoulder and told me “if you think this is the only first day that you’ll cry, I have news for you.” I told him Lottie is an only child, I’m probably going to cry at every first day of school. It’s strange to think that if you were still here we’d probably have another little Maybank running around. It’s okay though, your sister had twins two years ago and JB and Sarah are having their first soon, so she’s got cousins to play with. I love you sweetheart.
JJ

Y/N.
Uh, we have a teenager? Like a full ass practically fully grown human in our house. Thirteen years and it still feels like yesterday. We got the news yesterday that Luke Maybank died in jail over the weekend. Y/N, I have to tell you, our daughter cracks me up. I told her that her grandfather passed away, and she told me she hopes you take a trip down to hell and kick the shit out of him. I told her that I beat the shit out of him thirteen years ago when she was barely a week old. She found the news articles about the accident, and asked me to talk to her about it. I did, but it was hard. I’ve never shut up about you so she knew who you were. She also asked me why I never remarried. It’s simple, really. Half my heart was buried with you 13 years ago, and the other half divided to recover and love our daughter just as fiercely as we loved each other. I love you honey.
JJ
May 31
Y/N,
Okay, we’re old. It’s fine. Charlotte Rose Maybank, you know our pretty rockin’ kid? Yeah, she graduated high school today, as valedictorian. She’ll be 18 in July, Y/N, and then in August she’s going to the mainland for college. She wants to be a doctor. Watching her walk across that stage, in her cap and gown, I was sobbing. I was an absolute mess. JB had to take pictures for me because I couldn’t stop shaking. You’d be so proud of her. I know I sure am. I love you more than I can breathe,
JJ
October 25
Y/N,
Our baby girl got married today. Of course, I could go my entire life without knowing that JB and I are going share grandkids someday, but really Alexander is a great kid, and he loves Lottie. I know that someday, she’s going to find all these notebooks and read them and I hope she laughs that I shared every milestone with you like you could read these. She’s got one more semester of school left, then she will officially be Charlotte Rose Maybank-Routledge, MD. I personally think the hyphenating of her last name is really complicated, but that’s what she wants. She looks absolutely stunning in her dress, I hope you can see her. I love you, gorgeous,
JJ
November 13
Y/N,
We became grandparents today. It’s wild to think that 27 years ago, I was holding our daughter in the same hospital where Carter Jonathan Maybank-Routledge arrived early this morning. The Maybank genes are still strong in this one, Carter looks so much like Lottie it’s not funny. I told JB maybe the next one will look like his side, ha. Okay sweetheart, I love you. JJ
March 6
Mom,
I had absolutely no idea that Dad wrote you a letter every week, sometimes every day, for 36 years. He fought the cancer for a very long time, Mom, because he simply didn’t want to leave me and the boys.  I found the notebooks, I’ve spent the last week reading them. He loved you so much, he loved me so much. He wrote to you up until the last day. That’s beautiful. I know you are back together now. You’ve got 36 years to catch up on. Tell him we’ll be fine.
I love you both,
Lottie.

tilly coming home with a boy and uncle b and dad are like omg😟
okay so tilly definitely dates a boy who drives a truck. and, of course, tilly knows how protective everybody is so she gave her parents a little white lie as to where she was going and who she was with.
so, after their date tilly and the boy (we'll call him hunter) pull up at her house and hunter is being a gentleman in making sure that tilly gets home and wants to walk her up to the front door. and he does, and they're hand in hand, and hunter is so smooth like he tucks tilly's hair behind her ear and cups her face with his hand and moves in for the kiss.
so tilly and hunter are having a good night kiss (and maybe he's getting a little handsy) when uh oh jj gets the ring doorbell notification... and he sees it and is like "what the fuck??" and because him and john b are playing with axel in the backyard john b's like "what?" and so he shows him. then jj's immediately on the speaker like "you've got five seconds to get your hands off my daughter before me and her uncle come out there with our bat!" and oh my god... tilly is DYING of embarrassment and hunter is scared and is like "uh, sorry, sir" and makes the quickest exit you have ever seen.
as soon as tilly's through the door she's like "mooooom! dad just threatened my maybe boyfriend with a bat!" and running off up the stairs to basically grass jj up to indie about what he said. and to avoid the police interrogation she knew she would get about hunter and where they've been and what they were doing, etc. miss girl is still dying of embarrassment
