Steve grit his teeth as Tony carefully, casually prodded his thigh with the toe of his left foot again. They were fighting, and he couldn't tell if this was an olive branch or a deliberate attempt to make him lose his cool.

They didn't fight often. They argued a lot, of course. He and Tony both had very strong personalities, and they also had very strong opinions. More difficult still, Steve was from a different time, and while he'd made great strides in acclimating himself to the time (and while Tony had been very patient as he learned) some things he said and believed still had them butting heads sometimes.

Tony prodded his thigh again, and Steve sucked in a deep breath and closed his eyes, exhaling slowly. He would not give Tony the satisfaction of reacting.

"I'm not going to stop poking you until you give me some attention," Tony finally declared, prodding him again.

"We are fighting and I'm still mad at you," Steve answered curtly, looking back down at his book. He figured that was attention enough, with the mood he was in and their fight still hovering at the edges of their conversations.

The ball of Tony's foot stayed pressed to his thigh a moment longer before he slowly drew it back. "Oh. Sorry."

Steve slanted his gaze over at that, brows furrowing together at the tone of Tony's voice. It was the one he used when he knew he'd misstepped but didn't understand why. He looked genuinely upset before his emotional shutters came back down as he returned his gaze to his tablet. He pulled his feet in closer, tucking himself tighter into the corner of the couch.

Steve watched him, considering, then carefully asked, "We... are still fighting, aren't we?"

"Of course. Obviously," Tony scoffed, prodding at his screen a little harder than he usually might.

Steve waited a beat, but Tony didn't plow on like he usually did when he was angry. He'd had no problem shouting for hours yesterday, but Steve had no doubt he'd come up with new things to shout if he was still very upset. He cast around his mind for what Tony's sudden change in heart and remembered, frowning, that Colonel Rhodes had huffed out a frustrated, 'well, his parents never apologized to each other, at least not in front of him, so he thinks fights just stop eventually and you carry on as usual.'

Tony must have just been... ready for things to carry on as usual. Steve set his book in his lap and sighed again, tipping his head against the back of the couch. He'd been the second one to sit down on the couch. Tony must have thought that was an olive branch. And maybe it had been, he realized, turning to look at Tony again. Maybe, unconsciously, he'd been ready to end the fight, too. But not like Tony wanted, where they simply stopped talking about it and returned to life as normal.

"I'm sorry," Steve said, because he was. His ma always said it took two people to fight, after all.

Tony prodded at his tablet a couple more times, then turned his head a little, peering at him out of the corner of his eye. "...For what?" he finally asked, skeptical.

"For fighting," Steve answered simply. He'd learned early on that if he said too much, Tony would have more to read into.

Tony turned his head away, then looked back at him, eyes narrowed. "...I'm... sorry... too," he finally said, slowly, like he was waiting for Steve to spring some sort of trap after each word.

It hurt a little, Steve could admit to himself. But luckily, he'd learned that it wasn't his own shortcomings as a boyfriend that caused Tony to be suspicious of something he thought was a good thing; the lists of people who had hurt Tony in the past were all available online, after all. Not necessarily under that label, but Steve was pretty good at reading between the lines.

And it was a step in the right direction, Steve figured. Acknowledging their wrongs to each other was certainly better than just letting them go unsaid. They could have a discussion about it later, when the hurt wasn't so fresh and they had time to decompress.

Until then, Steve reached out to grab Tony's ankle and drag his leg back out, and Tony squawked as he was pulled across the cushions. "C'mere."

"Brute!" Tony howled, trying to claw his way back across the couch, but Steve's grip on his leg was immovable. "Stop fucking dragging me everywhere you want me, you neanderthal, I--"

"You what?" Steve asked, flipping him easily, and immediately dug his thumbs into Tony's arch, exactly where he knew Tony got sorest. Tony let out a moan, and Steve knew he had won, at least for the moment.

It had taken a few drinks to get them to this point, but Hob rarely got a chance to be open about his longer than expected history and eventually the talk came around to his centennial meetings.  And what had happened at the last one in 1889.

“Wait a moment, let me get this straight- some powerful entity makes you immortal, meets back up with you century after century, and then on your sixth date you tell him he is lonely and say you are just friends?  Geesh, no wonder the guy stormed off.”

“What- no- it wasn’t like that!”  Hob sputtered as his drink came down hard on the table.

“Uh huh, sure- and in the 1500s you didn’t shove your wife and kid in his face only to get upset when he then went off with someone else?”

“...”

His friend just raised his eyebrow at him and went back to sipping his beer while thoughts chased themselves across the immortal’s face.  When put like that…..

“Honestly I’m just impressed whatever he was just stormed off and you didn’t end up cursed or something.  Powerful enough to give immortality without a noticeable drawback?  Definitely powerful enough that breakups tend to spawn legends.”

Who is Hob drinking with? No clue, but someone who is supernatural or at least involved in the supernatural. Honestly was kinda thinking of making it be John Constantine and having it be a relative of Johanna, but decided to leave it up to the imagination- feel free to insert your favorite character/crossover.

He spent too much time thinking about all the bits of him that he kept gluing back together to pretend he was a person anyone would want to keep. He spent even more time picking at the cracks, pointing the flaws out to himself. Only thing he did more than that was make sure no one else noticed how far he was from human.

So, James Buchanan Barnes, who didn’t know what to call himself, who didn’t know how to go forwards, agreed, and moved back into the tower where his best friend lived with a husband orphaned by the Winter Soldier.

Falling in love can be hard enough to deal with on its own. Falling in love when you are a recently-reintegrated superhero, who spent the past 70 years as a brainwashed HYDRA assassin, is a bit tricky. But Bucky's handling things fine. He's fine.

1. The book ends I use for my cookbooks are made from old vinyl records. Motown, baby!

2. I have more books than I do space. Literally every flat surface in my living room has stacks of books on them. The entire bottom half of my entertainment center has been filled with books. I have a bookcase in the guest room closet that I’ve doubled up on and same with the one in the actual room part of the guest room. My own bedroom has books on both dresser and chest of drawers and I also keep some of my books at my parents’ house on my mom’s bookcase (because, well, she offered). Despite this, I’m absolutely that person who will continue to buy more books when I find one that sounds interesting.

3. While I will pretty happily watch a horror movie now, I was terrified as a kid and the two that stick out the most still get to me today: if I’m not expecting and I see even a picture of Chucky from Child’s Play, I will startle/jump/probably blurt out “Oh God!” (Remind me to tell you the time I had my back to the TV then suddenly heard that damn doll talking. Hahaha, thanks for that AMC.) When I was 4, my uncle, brother, and my two older cousins (by a year or two, lol) convinced me to watch that and I ran out of the room at one point and after my brother convinced me to go back in, I spent most of the rest of the movie hiding behind my grandparents’ coffee table whenever Chucky was onscreen. The second thing that gets me to this day? I hate clowns because when I was about 6, one of the previously mentioned cousins (he was 7) and I decided we’d be super cool and watch the original IT after everyone went to bed. We ended up back in his room and we barricaded his door with his chest of drawers.

4. I only have one tattoo but I’m planning on touching that one up and possibly coloring it in and then I have plans for about 3 or 4 more. Eventually!

5. If I had the means, I’d quit my job in a heartbeat and open a bookstore. Possibly with a little bakery attached. Because then I think I’d really love that and books and baking are two of my favorite things in life. (I may or may not have spent time debating on where said bookstore/bakery would be if I stayed where I live or if I moved and then tried coming up with names and logos for this.)

So I saw your post about supporting your kid and using their pronouns and I just wanted to tell you how happy that makes me? It gives me hope to see parents supporting their kids like that, to see them trying and putting effort into using the pronouns their kids have chosen. Especially as someone who hasn't actually outright come out to their own parents. So, you know, thank you

Aw, thank you, honey. I can’t speak for other parents, but I look at it like this:

A lot of people’s reactions to kids saying they’re not heterosexual or cis is basically, “it’s just a phase.” And my response to that is: SO WHAT???

Look, I was married for fourteen years, but I’m not anymore. So apparently, my marriage turned out to be just a phase for me. But let me damn well tell you, if you tried to tell me that it wasn’t a valid marriage just because it ended later, I would have some words for you, and they would not be nice words. And if you had told me while I was still married that it didn’t count because you were pretty sure it was going to end soon, I don’t even have words to tell you how pissed I’d have been about that.

If Thing1 decides a few months or years or decades from now that they'd rather go back to identifying as female, then that doesn’t invalidate their feelings on the subject now. Same for their sexuality. It costs me literally nothing (aside from the effort of remembering it) to give my kid the pronouns they want when we’re in spaces where they’re out as genderqueer (like Tumblr, and at home). 

There are some hills I’m willing to die on, as a parent, like making a solid effort at school. Bathing regularly, that’s a thing I’ll fight about if I have to. Sneaking food, especially upstairs where I really do not want ants or other bugs.

Pronouns? I literally have no idea why I would waste effort being upset about that. They’re just words. They don’t change who Thing1 is.
