Moonflower Murders — first look pictures and casting for sequel adaptation
Moonflower Murders — first look pictures and casting for sequel adaptation
The BBC has revealed casting and first look pictures for Moonflower Murders, sequel to Magpie Murders, both based on Anthony Horowitz novels. I did try Magpie Murders, but didn’t connect with the story — no reflection on anything except me! Returning in the lead roles are Academy Award-nominee Lesley Manville as book editor turned sleuth Susan Ryeland and Timothy McMullan as famous literary…

Silicon Valley Tech Moguls Want to Build a New City in California
When rich people start buying up land, it’s always fairly disturbing. If and when those same people start telling you that they’re going to use the land to make the world a better place, it’d only be natural to feel certifiably creeped out. Unfortunately, this is what’s been happening in northern California, where some of Silicon Valley’s most prominent bigwigs have snatched up a huge amount of…

'Christopher Nolan is one of the most acclaimed and commercially successful directors of the 21st century. In addition to his outstanding work on Batman with his Dark Knight trilogy, Nolan has delivered numerous inventive and original blockbusters, such as Inception, Interstellar and Tenet, that have gotten audiences excited about going out to the theater. His latest film, Oppenheimer, is currently making a massive crater at the box office alongside Greta Gerwig’s Barbie.
Throughout his career, Nolan has continued to build momentum and keep a consistent and clear desire to advance the art of cinema whenever and wherever he can, whether it be with smaller films like Memento and The Prestige or the major blockbusters that have made him a household name.
Recently, in an interview with Josh Horowitz on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the concept of Nolan taking on a film in the iconic James Bond franchise was raised. This isn’t the first time Nolan’s name has been thrown in the ring for Bond. In fact, it’s an idea that has tossed around on many occasions for over a decade now. While Nolan would undoubtedly deliver an incredible Bond film, that doesn’t necessarily mean that he should do it. At this point, it would almost be disappointing to see Nolan attach himself to one of the longest-running franchises in Hollywood’s history. Here is why:
The Confines of Existing IP
One of the key reasons that we don’t believe Nolan should direct Bond is because we do not want to see him handcuffed by the creative constraints of working within a franchise like that. With any major IP, whether it be Bond, Batman, or Barbie, there are always going to be boundaries that a creative team needs to work within. In some cases, these boundaries can be a benefit. They provide a defined creative sandbox to work within, which in turn can foster innovative and exciting ideas and stories. This is very much the case with Gerwig’s Barbie.
However, Nolan has proven time and time again that he is a director that works best without constraints. While he has worked within confines like this before to great success with Batman, his work beyond the DC universe has been what has cemented him as one of the most popular directors of his generation. The immense creativity, ingenuity, and originality of films like The Prestige, Inception, and Interstellar have proven that Nolan is a filmmaker unlike any other working today. His newest films have further solidified that reputation, and the release of Oppenheimer has shown that he is continuing to sharpen his skills with each new film.
Taking that creative spirit and then confining it inside the boundaries of a long-running IP would be a disservice to both Bond and Nolan. The director himself seemed to acknowledge this in his interview with Horowitz. He stated that, “when you take on a character like that or a work like that, you’re working within a particular set of constraints, and so you have to have the right attitude toward that. It has to be the right moment in your creative life where you can express what you want to express and really burrow into something within the appropriate constraints, because you would never want to take on something like that and do it wrong.”
A New Creative Direction for Bond
Another reason Bond should seek out a different voice for the franchise’s newest era post-Daniel Craig is that the series is in desperate need of a refresh. Craig starred in five films over the course of 15 years between 2006 and 2021. Those films, especially the latter entries, were very transparently influenced by the works of Nolan. 2012’s Skyfall took a similar tonal and stylistic approach to that of Nolan’s The Dark Knight, and this approach continued to carry into both 2015’s Spectre and 2021’s No Time to Die.
This approach to the Bond franchise has undeniably been a successful one, as Skyfall and No Time to Die in particular were some of the best films in the series. However, the franchise needs a new creative voice if it wants to continue finding success with whomever its newest star will be. Every actor who has portrayed Bond has brought their own style to the character, and the films they were in reflected that individuality. If Nolan were to come aboard Bond at this point, then it’s likely that the new Bond movies would essentially be the exact same as Craig’s, just with a different actor in his place.
Nolan Needs to Keep Moving Forward
Most of all, Nolan taking on a Bond film at this point in his career would almost certainly feel like creative regression, rather than continuing to push and develop him as a filmmaker. In the aforementioned interview, he acknowledges that “the influence of those movies on my filmography is embarrassingly apparent.” While it may not be something to be embarrassed of, he’s not wrong. Many of Nolan’s previous films have already had a very strong aura of Bond to them. It’s clear to see in his Dark Knight trilogy, and it’s even more obvious in other films like Inception and Tenet in particular.
If Nolan were to direct a new Bond at this point, it wouldn’t feel all that standout within his career. It would feel like him returning to the same kind of story that he’s told on several occasions before, only this time it would be without the sci-fi twists that separated Inception and Tenet from everything else. It would risk turning his Bond into a watered down version of films he has already made.
Would Nolan make a great Bond movie? Yes, almost certainly he would. However, if there were ever a time for him to do so, it was ten years ago. As his career currently stands, his talents are better spent taking on newer stories that have yet to be told. Nolan is consistently one of the most engaging and electrifying filmmakers working today, and his consistent dedication to embracing non-franchise stories has shaped him into one of the few true auteurs of modern cinema. While tackling Bond would by no means lose him that reputation, it would fail to strengthen or add to it.
There's no new challenge in Bond that would grow Nolan as a filmmaker. After delivering a film as powerful and challenging as Oppenheimer, Nolan is arguably at a high point in his career. He could do anything, and directing a Bond movie now would feel a bit like a squandered opportunity. That’s because Bond is an obvious choice for him, and Nolan’s success has largely been built on his ability to avoid the obvious and easy.'

‘The Twist of a Knife’ by Anthony Horowitz
Genre: Adult Fiction – Crime / Mystery Published: 2022 Format: Audiobook Rating: ★★★ I have so enjoyed the previous three books but for some reason I didn’t find this one quite as engaging. I mean, it was nice to listen to it while I was working, and it certainly helped pass the time, but the characters didn’t come across as well in this one and I can’t put my finger on why. The first maybe…

⋆。𖦹°‧ PUSHIN’ N PULLIN’ kim minji x reader
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
౨ৎ warnings: idol!au, 6th member reader, minji and yn argue like it’s their 9-6 job, yn is lost and minji is confused, swearing
from the moment minji and yn crossed paths during training, their connection was more like a collision. there was an instant clash of personalities that made it clear they weren't destined to be friends.
yn just didn’t like minji, there was no specific reason, there was just something about the older girl the worked her up, she was a person who never let people get to her but there was just something about minji that made her want to pull her hair down
minji didn’t like yn for the way she held herself, she was a witch dressed like cher horowitz, she was mean but somehow could manipulate her words into sounding so sweet and caring while she’s practically tearing someone apart.
but even with her sickly personality, she was still the most popular member, it was like everyone was just blinded by her face, including the other girls that they couldn’t see her for what she really is, or at least in minji’s eyes what she really is a-
“bitch,” minji said angrily to the girl who stood in front of mirror adjusting her pink polo shirt with the matching tennis skirt, “you’re such a bitch.”
“how many times do we have to do through this minji,” the younger girl states and she looks at the older through the mirror who scrunches up her face at the girl’s informality, “I know I’m a bitch, that doesn’t insult me.”
minji groaned and threw her head back at the girls words, it was like yn lived to annoy her, “can you just hurry up so I can use the washroom before we leave?”
“just one second,” yn whined before turning to face minji, “how do I look?”
minji gave her a deadpanned expression, “horrible.”
“I guess that means I look good because you have zero taste,” yn smiled at minji, “I would immediately go change if you said I looked good.” and like that she walks out the washroom leaving a raged minji.
as minji finished up in the washroom she headed out, the only thing on her mind being a good comeback for what yn said a couple minutes ago, she turns the corner to see the rest of the girls at the door.
“finally!” yn says as she links her arm with haerin, they were pretty close, something minji could never understand, it was like yn talked haerin’s ear off and haerin just entertained the girls useless thoughts, “you took forever!” minji looks at yn like she said the most diabolical thing in the word, “you were the one who took the longest!”
“was I? I don’t remember that.”
just as minji was about the launch herself at yn danielle cut in, “let’s not argue right now please, our managers are waiting for us in the car.”
minji gave yn a glare before pushing through them to open the door, “let’s go.”
as they made their way to the van, hanni, hyein, and danielle darted ahead, eagerly claiming their favorite seats in the back leaving the last three seats for yn, haerin and minji.
minji took the window seat, yn took the middle and haerin took the other window seat, minji couldn’t help but roll her eyes at the fact that the van had barely driven off and she was already talking about herself.
“so, he said that I was his ideal type on a variety show right? he said that it was because I fit his standards, that’s a compliment right?” yn immediately started rambling to haerin who raised her brows at the information yn just told her.
“it depends on what his standard is.” the cat like girl responds going on her phone to search up the male idols name, “it could be a bad thing…”
“but if I fit his standards and I am me that means that it has to be a compliment,” yn says, “I mean hello?! it’s me.”
this felt like the a hundredth time minji had rolled her eyes today because of any, she will never understand why yn entertains these male idols they never come to her for good intention, as soon as they realize how intelligent yn is they bail.
did she just call yn intelligent?
she did the mistake of telling yn her opinion on yn’s relationships, but it only led to yn saying this.
“you’re just jealous, that I get attention from cute boys.”
her jealous?! that was the most insane thing she’s ever heard come out of the mouth since she met the girl.
she tried to tune out yn’s boys problems and looked at the time, just a couple more minutes until they get to the shoot.
Tumblr media
minji watched as yn had her phone stuck in her face as the stylist touched up her pink nike outfit for the shoot, “you’ve had your face in the phone all day, is this boy that you’re so interested that important?”
yn quietly thanked the stylist before walking past minji down the hall to get to the set, minji following closely behind her, “you do know that he’s just gonna end up like every other one right?”
yn stopped in her tracks at minji’s words at turned to face the girl, “can you not be up my ass for one second.” she snapped, walking closer to the older girl until she hit the wall.
“you don’t even know him,” she adds flashing minji a cold glare and stepping back.
“I know what he wants,” minji responds immediately, “and it’s not you, it’s your looks.” she says giving yn and even cooler glare, pushing her self off the wall and closer to yn.
“you’re just-”
“jealous?” minji cuts yn, stepping closer if that was been possible, “why would I be jealous of a boy that knows nothing about you and only wants one thing, are they really right about you not being smart?”
yn stared at minji’s face for a good second, it was like she was getting lost in the girls closeness before gently pushing minji away from her, “fuck off.”
“I’ll fuck off when you stop entertaining those idiotic boys, I already have to deal with all your other flaws.”
“so me liking boys is idiotic?” yn said defensively causing minji to look at the girl confused.
“when did I ever say you liking boys is idiotic?”
yn tried to stutter out a response, before just turning away from minji and walking down the hallway, “just don’t talk to me for the rest of week!”
minji’s confused expression melted into an annoyed one, “that’s the best thing you’ve said all day!” she yells back.
she huffs watching yn walk to the set, as much as she loved to cuss the girl off in her head, she couldn’t help but think about how weird yn acted towards the end of their argument.
it’s probably nothing.

I saw again another post implying that J.K. Rowling "invented" the idea of a "school for wizards/school for witches" in fiction... *sigh*. Again, while Hogwarts definitively marked the cultural landscape and changed our modern vision of what a "school of sorcery/magic school" is supposed to be... Rowling invented nothing, and there were many, MANY, magic schools in fiction long before the first Harry Potter book was released. As much in fiction for adults as fiction for children. Let me recap some big points:
The Invisible College, from Diana Wynne Jones' The Tough Guide to Fantasy Land, one year before Harry Potter - AND which forms a parody/reference to most of the schools listed below.
Wizard's Hall, from the titular Wizard's Hall book by Jane Yolen - six years before Harry Potter.
Groosham Grange, from the novel of the same name by Anthony Horowitz, nine years before Harry Potter.
The Unseen University, from Terry Pratchett's Discworld - 14 years before Harry Potter.
Miss Cackle's Academy for Witches, from Jill Murphy's The Worst Witch, 23 years before Harry Potter
The island of Roke, from the Earthsea series by Ursula K. Le Guin - 29 years before Harry Potter.
We can even go back to Dom Daniel, from T.H. White's original version of The Once and Future King, 58 years before Harry Potter.
And I am not even counting the various "magic colleges" and "sorcery academies" that appeared in role-playing games such as Dungeons and Dragons long before Harry Potter came out...
Conclusion: Hogwarts is interesting and influential... But not inventive.

Daminette December 2023: 1-Mystery Theatre
"Welcome back to 'The Mystery Box'." Marinette declared, "I'm Ladybug."
"Robin." Damian stated.
"Now, last week we were going over The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Afterwards, there was a list of recommended books posted.
1.)The Puzzle Master by Danielle Trussoni
2.)The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
3.)Bullet Train and 4.)Three Assassins, both written by Kotaro Isaka and translated by Sam Malissa
5.)The Word is Murder by Anthony Horowitz
And for the more adventurous, 6.)Helter Skelter: the True Story of the Mason Murders by Vincent Bugliosi, Curt Gentry
You were also free to recommend your own favorite tastes for mysteries and crime. Today, we have special case in 'The Mystery Box' and I have a feeling everyone will like this one." she smiled.
Robin sighed, "That's what I'm afraid of."
"We know that many people have already left or are heading home for the holidays." Ladybug began, "So we thought of something-"
Robin sneered, "You thought of something."
"Don't get your feather's in a twist, Bird Boy." Ladybug cooed, "We wanted something everyone could enjoy; no matter how far. Today the mystery is: Ladybug and Robin! You are allowed to send in your questions, but if we feel something is too personal or close to giving away who we are, the question will be thrown out."
"Let the questions flow in." Robin commented.
Question one: Is there anyone you don't want to see during the holidays? There's always that one family member.
Ladybug smiled, "From the comments, I can see that lots of people agree with you; whether an uncle or aunt, a parent or a sibling. I'm afraid there's no one in my family I want to avoid, but there are old friends who turned out to be assholes. Those people I could go without."
"My family." Robin stated, "There was a reason I moved out, but I'm expected to be home because of my grandfather. I'm....excited to see my pets, though."
Question two: Are you going home for the holidays?
"Unfortunately." Robin sighed, "The show will be on hold until the break is over."
"No." Ladybug spoke.
"You're staying?" Robin shouted, "Why is this the first I'm hearing it?"
"My parents will be out of the country." Ladybug replied, ignoring her partner, "A relative is sick and they're leaving soon to help I've been looking up single holiday recipes to try this year."
"Lucky." Robin pouted.
"Robin, you can't cook." Ladybug retorted, "You'd end up burning the school down."
Robin should stay!
Robin, don't leave us!
Robin, what are you making for dinner tonight?
Robin, I'll teach you how to cook!
We can go out to eat!
Shut up! Let the bad bird burn down the school!
Birb
"Should we be concerned how many people want you to burn the school down?" Marinette questioned.
"I assume it has to due with finals." Damian smirked, "Also, I'm not doing it. I don't want to move back. I like my dorm."
Boooooo!
No!
Stay with us!
I got a C-, okay!
I failed -_-'
I don't want to retake that stupid class next year!!!
Need the evidence gone!!!!
Ladybug giggled, "Well, I can certainly say, it's no mystery how much our followers have faith in your cooking skills."
"Ha-ha." Robin spoke, rolling his eyes, "Besides, I can always order out."
"That would require you talking to people." Ladybug rebuffed.
"Not if I do it online." Damian answered, "Like you're one to talk; you're more introverted than I am. I know you have classes in person because there was no other option."
Question three: Are you dating? If so, why not invite her over?
"Not dating." Robin stated.
Ladybug declares, "Robin is my friend and he respects my boundaries."
"I'm Bi and lean more towards guys." he responds, "Girls are too clingy."
Ladybug scoffs, "Chat Noir was clingy."
"No." Robin declares, "Your mental ex-partner was obsessive and should be given a restraining order, should he ever find out who you are."
"Not arguing with you there." Ladybug replied.
Question four: You know each other? What makes Robin different from Chat Noir?
Ladybug rolls her eyes, "Yes; Robin and I know each other, personally. As many of you know, Chat Noir and I did not. To the people who aren't aware, I use to have my own podcast. Chat Noir is someone who reached out to me for a collab. We became known as the 'Bug and Cat Team'. We mostly spoke about the problems at school and social events surrounding the area."
"You don't have to say anything you don't want to." Robin spoke.
"I've talked about it before and several times after the incident; I'm fine talking about it now." Ladybug replied, "A topic came up during a podcast. Someone felt pestered by another individual; they claimed the person wanted to date them and had already rejected them. The person got more insistent and 'tried hard to win them over'."
"They harassed them." Robin sneered, "Just say it like it is."
Ladybug cleared her throat, "During that podcast, Chat Noir sided with the harasser and I didn't. I shouted at him and declared that I couldn't work with someone who thought harassing people was the right way to form a relationship. I shut down my side of the cast and blocked him. Suffice to say, the collab failed and I quit speaking my mind for awhile. Many people blamed me for the way the podcast ended. Some said Chat Noir was only joking. Others declared me the 'School's Voice of Reason'. Robin was the one to figure out who I was and reach out to me. He is the reason I'm back."
Question five: Do you think you two ever will date?
"I don't know." Robin explained, "I'd have to test her, first, if we ever got feelings for each other."
Ladybug smiled, "Oh, you're gonna test me? Is this part of the test, right now?"
"I prefer to get cheap food on the first few dates." Robin declared.
"Oh Kwami!" She laughed, "That reminds me of that stupid list we found: 'List of restaurants/places women refuse to go on a first date. Have you seen that list?"
Yes!
No!
What is it?
Who doesn't like pancakes?
Someone doesn't like pancakes?
They must live under a rock!
Tumblr media
"I saved that list. It is now my go-to list for dates." Robin spoke, "Again, bye Ladies."
Ladybug laughs, "That list was so stupid! I would eat at any of them! The mystery is what ladies did that person talk to and why do they hate those places so much?"
"It was probably written by the same people who wants a six-figure working guy." Robin shrugged, "Sugar Daddies and Mommies."
"People!" Ladybug cried, "College people are broke! We are still broke when we finish! We got to pay back those stupid loans!"
"We don't have the money for some five-star Michelin resturant because you got a $2000 dress on clearance for $300 and you want to feel special!" Robin declared.
"You don't want fast food or some homecooked meal someone spent the day on? You don't want a family resturant? Guess what? You're gone! We don't want you either!" Ladybug shouted, "I don't know who told you that's the only way you're getting someone good for the rest of your life. Why do you think so many are invested in celebrity gossip? There's always someone cheating or divorcing; some scandal. Being rich doesn't mean you're happy and you're life is perfect!"
"I agree with Ladybug." he spoke, "If I desperately wanted a homecooked meal, I could just ask Ladybug to make me dinner and I would owe her a favor."
"How about a two star resturant in return?" she commented.
"Deal." Robin responded.
They both laughed.
"You can bring your boyfriend, if he wants to come; a friendly dinner." Ladybug continued.
Robin nodded, "I'll let him know."
Question six: I hear clicking sometimes. What is that?
"Oops!" Ladybug spoke, "Sorry; that's me! ADHD kicks in and I'm usually messing with a pen or a figit toy. I didn't realize the noise was getting picked up."
Relatable
Pen clicker here
I tap my nails on my desk
Leg bouncer!
They have tiny figit cubes!
Marinette smiled, "I'm so glad you all understand. I see a lot of links to....what look like toys. I'll look through them over the holiday."
Question seven: major?
"Uh, that's too personal." Ladybug commented.
"Agreed." Robin added.
Question eight: what made you start a podcast?
"I was bullied a lot." Ladybug answered, "Not everyone listened to me, even when I was right. Slowly, I stopped trying to speak up and just watched and waited for everything to fail. I decided I wanted my voice heard, even if a single person was listening."
"I prefer the illusion." Robin declared, "There's too many people in my life and sometimes, I'm not heard."
Question nine: Who is taller?
Robin began to snicker, causing Ladybug to glare.
"I am!" Robin stated, "Ladybug is....what is that term?"
"Don't you-" she began to scream.
"Fun-sized!" he finished.
"Fuck you!" Ladybug shouted, making him laugh.
"I'm not that short!" Ladybug yelled, "You're just taller and like to pick on me!"
How cute!
Tiny bug?
Tall bug?
Robin lying?
Smol
Sibling vibes
Question ten: Ladybug, what recipes are you looking at for the holidays?
"Oh, a bit of everything!" she commented, "I saw a charcuterie board and some chips and dip. Maybe some soup? I don't want to make anything to complicated. Honestly, it all sounds good. Cookies are definetly being made on Christmas Eve. Usually, I would make chocolate chip or shortbread, but I want to try something different this year. Any recommendations?"
Peppermint Mocha
Hot Chocolate
Snowballs
Lemon Cups
Christmas Kitchen Sink
Peanut Butter Blossoms
Gingerbread
White chocolate with candycane pieces
Red velvet
Pinwheels
"I'm sure Ladybug will look through all of your recommendations and will let you know which ones she chose, when we return after the holidays." Robin spoke, "I will try and come back earlier, but don't hold your breath. We don't need a campus mystery."
"Remember to think out of the box" Ladybug cheered, "and Happy Holidays!"
"Ugh, " Marinette groaned, "I can't believe my knitting needles were being picked up but the mic."
"I'll see if Barbara or Drake are free to look over the audio and maybe find a way to tweak it." Damian stated, "I'll walk you to your dorm, Miss Staying-For-the-Holidays."
"Well, Mr.-No-Five-Star." Mari teased, earning an eye roll, "Want me to cook you dinner?"
"Only if you promise to come over for Christmas." he answered.
"Think Jon's jealous?" Marinette questioned.
"Of me eating your cooking?" he spoke, "Always. He told me if it wasn't for my martial arts training and swordsmanship, he'd be fighting me to date you."
Marinette rolled her eyes and kissed her boyfriend on the cheek.
"You know." Mari spoke, as she cuddled into her boyfriend's arm, "You could have just said I think my girlfriend should meet my family. I would have said yes."
"Still think it was better to keep our lives separate?" Damian asked.
"You mean our personas on the box away from who we really are?" she questioned.
He nodded in return.
"Yes; I do." she answered, confidently, "To many people, I'm soft-spoke or clumsy. I'm not someone people listened to. I don't regret starting my podcast on the side. I am glad you found me. You didn't let one person ruin me and who I was turning into."
"Well, I'd like to see Ladybug come more into play." Damian whispered, "I know she's in there and I like her just as much as I do Marinette Dupain-Cheng."

I don’t want to lose you again
Alex gets a phone call from the hospital saying that his uncle was in a bad accident. Except, Ian Rider died four years ago...

Alex was already running late to his university class when his cell phone started to ring.
He reached into his pocket intending to turn off the phone's ringer, assuming that the incoming call was from Jack, Sabina or Tom. They were the only people who kept in contact with him regularly.
It was an unknown number, with a 115 area code, Nottingham if Alex remembered correctly. It was likely a spam call; someone trying to sell him something or waste his time. Ian always said to never answer them, plus if it was really that important whoever was calling could just leave a message.
And- Alex stole a glance at the time, if he did not get out of here in the next minute he would miss his train.
There was just something odd nagging at him. Alex pulled the slightly burnt piece of toast out of his mouth and pressed down on the answer button.
“Hello, May I speak with Alex Rider?” The female voice on the other end of the line spoke. Whoever this unknown number was…well, they knew who he was.
“Who is asking?”
“I’m Sarah, a nurse at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham. I am calling for Alex Rider?
“What?” Alex responded rather confused. Why would a nurse from a hospital miles away call him on this dreary weekday morning. Heck, why at all? It’s not like he had an appointment up there. “Uh… This is him.”
Alex slid himself onto one of the high stools. He did not know anyone in Nottingham. Jack and Sab were both in America, Tom was or should be in his Uni classes. None of them were anywhere near Nottingham. His mind briefly flashed to Ben Daniels. It had been months, almost a year now, since he had spoken to Ben. Ben might have been from Birmingham or Manchester. But if it was Ben…. Alex would have expected Wolf or Crawley to pass the news on to him.
“Well Alex.  I’m calling regarding your loved one, Ian Rider. And, I wanted to inform you that they have been admitted to our hospital.”
“What the fuc-“ Alex started to respond before catching himself, “Sorry. I just am really not expecting this. You said my uncle, Ian Rider, is in the hospital?”
“Yes. I know the news can come as a bit of a shock,” She continued, “He was involved in a serious accident when his motorbike collided with oncoming traffic. He listed your name and phone number to the medical personnel at the scene, before being med flown to Queen’s Medical center. He is currently in the Intensive Burn unit at the hospital. I am calling firstly to inform you of his condition but also because you are listed as Ian’s medical proxy, and legally are able to make decisions on his behalf for treatment.”
Alex ran a hand through his hair. It was unbelievable. There is no way Ian is still alive? Or was there? It was a closed casket at the funeral. Ian or even Alan Blunt could have faked his death. Four years…
It was a long time. And, if Ian was alive why didn’t he try to make contact with Alex before that? Why would he just abandon him? Especially if he knew Blunt and Jones would take advantage?  Alex felt just a bit angry.
“Alright,” Alex repeated, turning his focus back to the phone call,  “What happened? And what do I have to do?”
“Firstly, Ian has suffered from second and third degree burns on his right side. The third degree burns extend through the entire thickness of his skin, are more challenging to treat and may require skin grafts.  He also sustained a head injury. We’ve conducted relevant diagnostic tests which showed swelling. Our main concern here is increased pressure on his brain from his skull. But, we need consent in order to do surgery.”
“My consent, right?” Alex asked
“Correct. We also want to make sure that you know the procedure, the risks and the benefits, along with answering any questions you might have.”
“That is the best thing to do, right? That’s what the doctors are recommending?”
“The sooner we reduce the swelling and pressure on the skull the better.”
“Alright, yeah do that. I’m definitely not going to make it to my class today…. You said Nottingham?”
“Yes, that is correct.” The nurse responded.
“Good. I’ll be on the next train up.”  With that Alex ended the phone call, and pondered what had just happened. He felt nauseous, like the room was spinning way too fast around him.
On one hand, Ian could be dead. There was always a chance that there are two Ian Riders with the same birthdays in the UK- maybe the other Ian had a nephew named Alex. Alex was a common enough name. So was Rider.  On the other hand, Ian could be very much alive. Which brought Alex full of emotions. If he was alive why did he wait four years to contact Alex, why was he in Nottingham, and why didn’t anyone tell him? A thought dawned on Alex. Maybe they did not even know Ian was still alive.
