(I'd say... spacer, Roche the spacer)
ooooh you even have your own show?
how many of you are there, seeing everyone I gotta know seems fun!
[easy enough to break out of an unfamiliar shell, Roche looks ready to blast off! or forgetting that gravity is in play, given he had to stop himself faceplanting immediately.]
...uh, if I had a clue where they'd even be. is it okay if you help me familiarise with the place? I'll help on a fossil hunt after!
REALLY!? OKAY YEAH, C'MON LET'S GO!!

Ancestral Chapter 20
A shorter chapter today. Written for ectober 2023 day 26: cult.
“What–  How?  How could you possibly do that?” asked Danny.  “How could you even be sure it’d show up on a– In a ghost’s clothing?”
“What?” asked Matthew.  “The Key?”
“Yes, the Key,” said Danny.  “It’s supposed to do that?”
“Yes,” said Gwensyvyr.  “I helped create the enchantment myself.  It isn’t the only one on the key.”
“The compass part?” guessed Danny.
Gwensyvyr nodded.  “There is already a construct of magic in it, and that makes it so that it stays with the one who carries it, if they should become a ghost, until it is touched by a syvyr of our line.”  She shrugged.  “I could show you the schematic, but I fear it would not mean much to you.”
“I mean…”  Danny trailed off.  “Probably not.  I guess.  But… why?  And is it a new key, or–?”
“Oh, we could have done that.  In some ways it would have been easier.  But, no.  This is the same key, brought from a distance.”
“But… why?”
“Because it is in the nature of those who fight to die, and sometimes far from home,” said Gwensyvyr.  It would be… ill advised to leave any Key in the hands of the enemy.”
“Danny,” said Jazz.  “What are they saying?”
“Oh,” said Danny.  “Oops.”  He quickly summarized the conversation from the point where he’d stopped acting as a go-between.
“What did they mean by the ‘last Key?’” asked Jazz.  She seemed to be the only one put together enough to really ask questions.  “Vivian, do you know?”
Vivian shrugged and shook her head.  “That’s just what they said.”
“I don’t like that,” said Matthew.  “There are other Great Gate Keys, but they should be… they aren’t out and about where anyone could get them.”  He bit down on his lip then started typing on his phone.
“So,” said Eugene.  “Who were they?  The people who…”
“I don’t know,” said Vivian.  “Evil bastards.”  She blinked tears from her eyes that vanished as they fell.
“I have a thought of who they might be,” said Gwensyvyr.  “Or who they might originally have been.  It is suspicion, only, mind, and to understand you must learn a history that has been forgotten.”
Everyone leaned in again, as if that would make them hear better, faster.  Danny saw hands on knife hilts and fists bunched in clothing.
“You remember, Dannyl, Yazmyn, what I have said before: all kinds of people leave ghosts.  The House of Dyrys has old enemies.  Enemies as old as I am.”
“The viking kings,” said Lewis.  “The ones who killed your husband.”
Gwensyvyr raised a finger.  “A little too fast, grandson, but, yes.”  She let her finger fall back to the surface of the table with a tap.  One that, by the flinches, everyone heard, not just Danny.  “It is difficult to speak of even now, and there are rites older even than myself which I have tried to follow, though the years flow like sand in a glass.  Needs must.
“You know some of my story.  I was born on Myz, near what is now Sy Roch.  Then I was called only Gwenn, for my hair was as white then as it is now.”  She touched one of her braids, pulling it back behind her ear.  “We were not one country, then.  Nor were we even nine countries.  There were few raiders in those days, and no one desired to be beholden to another.  Yet even so, there were things we had in common.  Language, names, rites, knowledge, and the knowledge that is beyond knowledge.  So when a priestess of the sacred pool came from Myrgyn to seek a successor for one who had passed, it was considered a blessing and an honor.
“There were nine of us.  Three for the pool itself.  Three for the spring that fed it.  Three for the apple tree that grew on its banks.  They were wondrous things.  Their magic was apparent by sight alone.  They glowed with it.  Some days, when the stars were right and the correct sacrifices were made, the surface of the pool would glow green, and become a door to the beyond.  A drop of the water of the spring in the mouth of the living might cause one to see spirits.  A drop in the mouth of a dead body might cause it to seem to live again for a time.  A drop in the mouth of a spirit - or mere proximity - might cause them to be seen and heard and other things besides.”
Definitely a portal, then.
“The tree bore red apples and green, as you might see on any tree, but it also grew apples of gold and silver.  The silver apples could heal any ailment.  The gold granted power.”
Gwensyvyr paused.  “It was a matter of great importance that the pool and its gifts be guarded.  Some few could be granted to any who asked.  But even something as small a bird or a fly that fell into the pool, or a worm that ate of an apple, could become a horror.  Evil, vile things would come from the pool as often as the good, or they traveled from elsewhere to seek it out for their own ends.”
“You were doing what I do in Amity,” said Danny, before he could stop himself.  “You were guarding a portal.”
“I’m not altogether sure what you are doing in Amity,” said Gwensyvyr, “but it would not surprise me if it were so.”
Danny ducked his head, feeling eyes on the back of it.  Everyone was looking at him.  He knew it. He was going to have to explain that in more depth before too long.
“But when I was not much older than you, the vikings came.  They came with great ships, with weapons, and with their own magic-weavers.  And, of course, we fought back.  We had our own weapons, we had our magic, and the sacred pool at our backs.  For some years, this was enough.  And yet even these things could not stall our enemy forever.  Not when he had been eying the riches of Myrgyn and the bounty of the sacred pool.  One by one, my sister-priestesses were killed, and I ran to the only escape I had available.”
“The portal,” said Danny, starting to see where this was going.  He swallowed back nausea.
“Yes.  The pool.  I was not fast enough.  With one foot in the pool and one on the shore, I was felled by an ax.  But I fell forward, and that was sacrifice enough.  The pool granted me its gifts, and by extension, life.  But I was so very weak, and when I crawled from the pool, the raiders were still there.
“They did not recognize me as one they had slain - who would?  They had not even truly seen my face.  Instead, they took me as a slave for themselves, and took me to the one who had led them.  The one who, in those days, thought to make himself a king.”
“He called himself Erik the Dark in those days, though I learned enough of him later to know that had not always been his name.  But Erik was a name for kings, and so he took it.  In this age, you might know him by another.
“Pariah Dark.”

AS WE KNOW IT - Review
DISTRIBUTOR: Buffalo 8
Tumblr media
SYNOPSIS: “Set in Los Angeles in the late 1990s, struggling writer James Bishop grapples with the emotional shrapnel of a recent breakup with his longtime girlfriend, Emily. As James holds up in his Hollywood Hills home with writer's block, his eccentric best friend Bruce shows up with bad news. The city has plunged into chaos by an unusual zombie outbreak, courtesy of tainted soy milk, wreaking havoc on James' semi-charmed kinda life. With the streets of Los Angeles swarming with the undead, James, Bruce, and Emily come together to barricade themselves in the house while reconciling their personal struggles. And occasionally, letting in the only food delivery service still operating, Abracadabra.” -Press Release
REVIEW: Josh Monkarsh’s film feels like a play as James’ home is the main setting and much of the story unfolds in the living room, kitchen and bedroom. The limited locations add to the feel of a 90’s sitcom, from “Seinfeld,” to “Friends” and the late 90’s “Freaks & Geeks.” Clearly these characters are in their mid to late 20’s but their lack of maturity make them seem much younger.
Monkarsh, DePaolo and Francis’s script is jam packed with 90’s references and bits and gags that rely on period as well. One of the jokes between James and Bruce is their love of “Waterworld,” which they watch on a laserdisc (yes, I still have a player and a collection of laserdiscs). It is clearly a love letter to that period of time when life was simpler and complicated in different ways before the advent of the smartphone, tablets and laptops. The absurdity of the zombie plague being caused by tainted soy milk takes a back seat to the relationship between the three characters, and Rory, the delivery person who happens to be an old acquaintance of Bruce, makes for a nice distraction.
The film has a rather dry pacing, and even Bruce’s chaotic moments come at a slower pace. There is an overall malaise that you would expect from the zombies. Somehow it all works and becomes engaging. Each actor brings elements to their performances that make for likable and sympathetic characters, even Bruce. It’s a great ensemble cast, but I have to say actor Danny Mondello creates this memorable character that could have easily been cliched but comes off fresh and memorable, like an early Joe Pesci performance. Actor Chris Parnell received a nice amount of screen time, with an additional scene during the credits, and it would have been nice to see a bit more of Pam Grier.
I enjoyed the cinematography, costumes and production designs that captured the period. The editing sustained my viewing engagement. The zombie make up and designs are simple and effective, as well as the special effects, with nothing too gorey. I liked Michl Britsch’s score. It enhanced the comedic tones of the film and added slightly more energy to the film.
AS WE KNOW IT is a relationship comedy set against the backdrop of a zombie outbreak taking place in Los Angeles. The film is kind of a 90’s American slacker reworking of “Shaun of the Dead,” with a tone similar to Jim Jarmusch’s “The Dead Don't Die,” but without some of the film’s more bizarre moments. A fun and mildly funny trip down memory lane with some likable characters who take center stage over the zombies. Monkarsh does a nice job with the material but given his film credits to date I’m not sure when and if will see Monkarsh venturing into the horror genre again soon.

“Soap” 65 (1980)
Tumblr media
A significant episode.
Burt's new storyline starts. He decides to run for Sheriff. This will be a big part of the series from here on in.
The lengthy scene that opens the episode, with Burt and Danny practicing to be lawman and villain, is hilarious.
Eugene Roche returns to the show to play Mr. Mallou for 5 more episodes.
Spring 1980: ABC aired Soap in the middle hour of Thursday prime time after Barney Miller and before 20/20. Against it, CBS had Barnaby Jones while NBC aired Quincy, M.E.

Me and my friends Ernest Rhoads and Danny Kopelson had a night on the town! Got to hang with Will Rollins who's running for Congress. A good egg who has our backs. Also went to QUADZ Palm Springs to see my pal Craig Chester for the The Filmmakers' Gallery evening of the film "Swoon" which Craig was nominated for the Spirit Award for #bestactor! Craig was the first out actor I met one year before I came out on TV. His truth really gave me space to come out as an #actor and #comedian. Produced Paul Belsito and Steven Roche

"SUICIDES END A PRISON RIOT," The Mercury (Manhattan, Kansas). October 4, 1929. Page 1. ---- COLORADO UPRISING ONE OF BLOODIEST IN THE NATION'S HISTORY ---- RINGLEADERS SUICIDE ---- Revolt Leases in Its Wake a List of 12 Known Dead and Many Wounded Some of Whom May Die Guards Killed in Cold Blood ---- Canon City, Colo, Oct. 1 (AP) - Due of the bloodiest prison mutinies in the nation's history came to an end at dawn this morning with the suicide of four leaders of the rebellion in the Colorado stare penitentiary.
The mutiny left in its wake list of 12 known dead and many wounded, some of who may die.
Four ringleaders of the mutiny barricaded with more than 150 other convicts in cell house No. 3, surrounded by troops, police and prison guards, and hopelessly outmumbered, first killed a wounded comrade and then fired bullets into their own brain.
The other convicts then surrendered and were marched out of the cell house just at sunrise. Four of the dead were prison guards, disarmed and slaughtered in cold blood inside the cell house, to emphasize the convicts' demand for unmolested freedom. Warden, Crawford, who declined all offer in parley with the embattled prisoners was himself wounded during one of the attacks on the cell block.
Dynamite Used National guard troops and police details from four Colorado cities fired more than 7.000 rounds of ammunition into the convict stronghold during the night. The battle was marked be the attempt to dynamite the cell house wall, one blast breaking all the windows but failing to effect a breach in the masonry.
The hero of the dynamiting attempts was a Catholic priest Father Patrick O'Neill, who carried the bombs to the foot of the cell house wall, under cover of machine gun fire from the prison walls.
In all seven prison guards were killed, three al the outbreak of rioting Thursday morning and four more during the night.
Those killed in the early rioting were Roy Brown, Walter Rinker and Elmer G. Erwin.
Those slaughtered in the cell house were John J. Ettes. Robert A. Wiggins, Charles Shepherd and John W. McClelland.
The convicts dead included Danny Daniels, who led the rioting, and acted as executioner of the guards; Charles Davis. A. Η Davis, George (Red) Riley and James Pardue.
Killed by Comrade Pardue was wounded in the abdomen during the early rioting.
He was removed to cell house No. 3 by the other convicts. He was found this morning with a bullet through his head, fired by one of the other convicts to end his suffering.
Three of the other ring leaders were found dead in the same cell, powder burns on their temples bearing mute testimony to shots fired at close range. The body of Daniels was in the doorway crawled half in and half out of the cell.
The floor of the cell house, which host night served as the execution chamber of four unarmed guards, was slippery with blood. The bodies of Charles Shepherd and John W. Clelland, two of the slain guards were found in the cell house, found hand and foot. Both had been shot through the head.
Close estimates is the time of the suicides the riot leaders at 4 a. m. but was not until an hour and a half later, at daybreak when O. E. Karl, one of the surviving guards, made his way to the prison yard, that the attacking forces learned of the fact, entered the cell house and rounded up the prisoners.
Afraid to Leave Earl said he was afraid to leave the cell house until daylight, for fear of being mistaken for a convict and shot by the watchers on the walls. With him in the cell house were John Pease and Lawrence Roche, who escaped the fury of the convicts, Roche's sister Josephine, secretary Crawford, had to remained at the prison all night, fearing each to see her brother's bullet body tossed out of a window the cell house, as the bodies Elles and Wiggins were tossed out.
Giving her brother up for she had left the prison shortly before daylight. When she learned that he was alive, she collapsed.
Gutted by fire, which destroyed the dining room and chapel and two of the cell houses and scarred by machine gun bullets and dynamite, the prison yard this morning was utter ruin.
One of Guards Mad Marvin Duncan, one of the guards in the cell house, was carried to a hospital this morning stark mad from terror. He was found locked in a cell and it was necessary to take off the door to get him out. He was at first thought to he dead, but examination revealed he was not even wounded. He saw Elles, prison hangman, shot down and saw his body tossed out of the cell house window.
He stood by while "Danty" Daniels asked Abe Wiggins, another guard if he had said his prayers.
"Yes," Wiggins replied without of emotion. "Where do you want me to stand"
He heard Daniels say "right where you are." and saw a bullet fired through Wiggins' head.
He heard Daniels tell John Shea, another guard, to take Wiggins body out to the warden, and fell him that Marvin Duncan would be the next guard to die.
That was at 9:30 o'clock. From then until he lost his mind, he expected each moment to be his last. Prison physicians said his condition resembled shell shock.
Warden Crawford today estimated the damage to the penitentiary at between $300,000 and $400,000. All the cell blocks except No. 3, in which the mutinous convicts were barricaded, were destroyed by fire, and number three is badly damaged, he said.
