Eyes
Dannymay!
It's been two years since I started posting fanfiction. Can you believe it?
.
.
.
Danny sucked the ghost into the thermos and landed, breathing heavily and clutching a shallow gash on his side. Fighting someone with sickles for fingernails was not fun, and it was even less fun when he first had to expel that someone from his principal's body. Luckily, however, he had left Mrs. Ishiyama back at the school and she wasn't here in this alley to see him become human again, bright transformation rings sweeping over him, changing his white hair and green eyes to black and blue respectively.
He groaned and rubbed the back of his eyes. The encounter with not-Ishiyama had begun while he was on his way to after school detention, Mr. Lancer was going to be... unhappy with him.
Shadows swept past the mouth of the alley as Sam and Tucker ran by and then backtracked. Danny waved at them, tiredly, with the hand that was holding the thermos.
"How did you know she was overshadowed?" asked Tucker, breathlessly while Sam bent to examine Danny's wound.
"How did I know? More like, how didn't you know? Her eyes were completely red. The whole thing!" He removed his hand from his wound to wave it in front of his face. Sam needed better access, anyway.
"What are you talking about?" asked Sam, pulling a first aid kit from her backpack. "Her eyes were normal."
"Yeah," said Tucker, taking the box from Sam so she could rummage through it without putting it on the alley ground. "She looked the same as she always does."
"What, really?" asked Danny, nonplussed. "Wait, hold up. You've seen other people overshadowed before, right?"
"Yeah? Of course we have," said Sam.
"You've overshadowed me enough," said Tucker.
"And you've never, I don't know, noticed that a person's eye color changes when they're overshadowed? That they glow?"
"No," said Tucker, slowly. "Because it doesn't. It stays the same. Otherwise it would be really easy to tell when someone was overshadowed. You'd just have to look at their eyes."
"I guess it's a power that you didn't notice was a power," said Sam. "Do Vlad's eyes look red to you all the time?"
"No," said Danny. "He looks normal. Wait, you guys can see when my eyes glow, right? When I get angry, or when I use my powers in human form?"
"Yeah," said Tucker. "We see that."
"I think this is good for now," said Sam, patting the bandages. "Fly to my place and we can finish it up, there. Unless you have something I haven't noticed?"
"No," said Danny. "You're good. And we really have to test the eye thing."
.
The wound didn't need much cleaning, and his ghostly healing factor had already started to work on it by the time he met back up with Sam and Tucker, so the bandaging was light, unnoticeable under his clothing. Which was good, because obvious bandaging tended to get his parents' attention in a bad way.
"Mom?" he called. "Dad? I'm home!"
"Hey, Danny!" called his Dad, his voice echoing up from the open door down to the lab. "Come down and see what we're working on!"
Well, that was enough to trigger a full-body cringe. Danny did not like going down into the lab while his parents were actively working on something. All too often the thing in question would attack him.
Still, he didn't like to disappoint them if he could help it, so he set his backpack down by the door and slouched tensely down the stairs. "What is it?" he asked, as he neared the foot of the stairs.
"A possession detector!" said Jack, waving a screwdriver. "We haven't come up with a name yet!"
"We only started to work on it today," said Maddie.
In theory, a device that could detect overshadowing and keep people from being taken advantage of that way would be great... unless it could also detect half-ghosts in their human form. Then it would be not so great. It would also render his newly-discovered ability and advantage rather moot, so he wasn't sure how he felt about it overall.
"That's cool," said Danny, neutrally. He flexed his hands. "How does it work?"
"We'll show you!" said Jack, pulling the half finished thing off the table as Maddie tsked in disapproval. He dropped the thing over Danny's head like a helmet, and he stumbled under the unexpected weight, a squeak of distress escaping from his lips. Something bright shone into his eyes and he flinched back before being steadied by his father. "You see?"
"Um," said Danny. "No."
He heard Maddie sigh. "After examining some volunteers who claimed to have been possessed recently, we noticed that they had a much higher level of ectoplasm in their eyes than normal, even for people living in a high-ectoplasm environment. Working backward from that, we realized that the ghosts possessing them must have been physically manifesting their eyes to some degree while doing so, probably to retain their visual acuity. Ghosts generally have better eyesight than humans."
"Uh huh," said Danny. He had noticed that, actually. Being half ghost and all.
He was also really hoping the machine was non-functional. Maybe it had been long enough for him to take it off without being remarked on?
"The thing is, we think we should be able to detect that layering," said Maddie. "We're trying out different wavelengths of light. The problem is, we don't want to accidentally accuse people like us, who just have relatively high levels of ectocontamination, of being possessed willy-nilly."
"Or Vladdy!" said Jack. "He's had high levels of ectoplasm in his system since college! It's why he kept having that ectoacne!"
Danny felt his eye twitch.
"You can see how that kind of thing could evolve into a witch hunt," said Maddie. She lifted the machine off of Danny's head. "See? You're getting readings like the ones we took from the people who had just been possessed, but we know you haven't been." She showed a receipt-like piece of paper to Danny, and he nodded, even though he couldn't read it. "Ours are like that, too," she finished.
"Well, it would be cool if you could get it to work," said Danny, relieved not to have to deal with his parents deciding he was possessed but also disturbed that his parents' eyes apparently contained a similar amount of ectoplasm to his. "I should probably go upstairs and work on my homework."
"Okay, Danno!" said Jack, ruffling Danny's hair. "Go knock it out!"
Danny smiled, already retreating. "I don't think you can do that with homework, Dad. It isn't like our hot dogs. It's not animate."
"Speaking of food," said Maddie, we're ordering out, tonight. "Is there anything you'd like in particular?"
"Chinese?" asked Danny, hopefully, his foot on the stair. "From the place that makes it really spicy?"
"Alright, but we're only getting one that hot. The rest of us can't handle it."
"Okay!" said Danny, jogging the rest of the way up the stairs. "I love you! Bye!"
He did go upstairs, but first went to the bathroom, not his bedroom. He stared into the mirror, and let a tiny bit of ectoplasm seep into them, a thread of glowing green circling his iris. Were his eyes really all that different than everyone else's?
He shook his head. He had homework to get to. Maybe if he did everything for English Mr. Lancer wouldn't give him another detention.

Doctor
This follows the story of Eyes and Flowers
Danny couldn’t understand how he managed to get a cold in the Ghost Zone. The area they were in was a little cooler than what he was used to, but he spent most of his time in the artificial sunlight of Pandora’s garden, which was a perfect temperature for him. Plus, he hadn’t thought he could even get human viruses here.
He guessed ghosts could get it too, his week and a half spent here had taught him ghosts had a biology just as complicated as humans. Though they were different, and even differed between the ghosts, he figured if some ghosts could breathe, then they could get colds too.
The lack in proper nutrition had probably lowered his immune system too. Pandora had first developed her garden when the human world was still open to them, and it was more for decoration than purpose. It’s not like they could have guessed they’d have a human trapped here for an unknown amount of time and made sure to have plants with all the nutrients one needed.
It would work short term, and Danny thought that would be fine. He’d just hoped his parents would have figured out a way to reopen the portal by now. This was his ninth day in the Zone and still nothing. Pandora had let him join the scouts to go to the area a couple times when he asked, but she didn’t want to risk the rest of the Ghost Zone finding out about the human in their midst, so he wasn’t allowed to stay for long.
He knew it was for his own safety, but he got so bored waiting around all the time. He just wanted to go home, hug his family and eat a pizza or two.
‘At least my cooking skills have gotten better.’ Danny thought as he sat down with his fresh bowl of warm soup. It lacked a lot of flavour with his limited ingredients, but he was eternally glad that Pandora had garlic in her garden.
He’d only had a few spoonfuls before the door to the private kitchen opened and revealed two of the ghosts he’d gotten close to in his time here. Phantom and Ember were arguing loudly about something, but Danny’s head was pounding too much from their volume to pay attention to the words.
“Guys, not so loud. I have a headache.” He murmured with his head in his hands.
“A headache?” Phantom’s worried, but thankfully quieter, voice spoke up as he shifted closer to Danny. “What happened? Are you okay?”
He waved a hand in Phantom’s general direction, “I’m fine. It’s just a cold.”
“What’s up with your voice, dipstick?” Ember asked, floating a little bit behind Phantom.
Danny looked at them, squinting a little at their bright glow in the darkish room. “Do ghosts even get colds?” He figured he may as well ask.
Ember frowned and spoke unsurely. “Uh… Some ghosts can get cold if they don’t have a temperature core?”
Danny shook his head, “No, I mean like, sick colds.” He didn’t have much time to dwell on the notion that ghosts apparently did not get colds before Phantom was reaching out to him worriedly. Just like he did back in the garden over a week ago, but this time they were comfortable enough with each other that he felt it okay to touch his shoulder.
“You’re sick!?” The sudden shout made him wince, which made Phantom draw back apologetically. “Sorry.” He continued quietly. “Is it the sunlight? Do you need to go back to the garden? How do you feel?”
Danny started laughing at the ghost’s worry over him. Phantom had been particularly worried about his health ever since Pandora mentioned that humans needed sunlight or they got sick, and though it got a little overbearing at times, it was kind of cute that he fretted so much. And the laughter turning into a small coughing fit didn’t help matters either. Danny held up a hand to placate the ghost while he drank his water and listened to the him and Ember frantically discuss if having a cold meant he was cold and if they should make him warmer.
“Guys, it’s not that big of a deal.” He said when he put the glass down and picked up his soup again. The warmer liquid was much more soothing on his throat.
“Yes, it’s a big deal! You’re sick!” Danny watched, amused as Phantom ran a hand through his hair. He probably would have shared one of those teasing looks with Ember about Phantom’s overprotectiveness if it weren’t for the ghost looking similarly worried. “I have no idea how to help a sick human. We’re going to need a doctor.”
He stood from his crouch and probably would have bolted for the door if Ember hadn’t spoken up. “But ghost doctors wouldn’t know how to help a sick human either.”
“Then we need Pandora. She knows the most about humans than anyone here.”
“I think I know more about humans than anyone here.” Danny mumbled, but went unheard as Ember told Phantom stay and watch him while she went to get the older ghost.
Danny rolled his eyes, “You don’t need to bother Pandora with this. I’m fine!”
As Phantom started questioning him on what a cold was and if he could do anything to help Danny, the human sighed fondly and continued to eat his soup in between answers. As over the top as this all was, he was glad Phantom cared enough to worry like this. It reminded him to add another thing to his mental checklist of things to do when he got home.
Tell his parents that ghosts are not the evil beings they told him they were.

the sacrifices of children
Danny Phantom drabble. This is set early on in season 1, in which Danny deals with the emotional sacrifices of getting shot at by his parents.
Me? A fanfic writer projecting onto this kid? Never.
-
The first time she swung the barrel end of her gun at him, his joints locked up, his mouth went dry, and the ectoblasts in his palms sizzled and popped into nothing.
“Mom.”
The wind in the distance between them ripped his word away, and the blast ripped through his stomach.
He didn’t know if it was his stomach for sure – maybe it was his diaphragm, or his kidneys; he was a physics-lover and knew jack shit about physiology – but it rendered him unable to fly. So, he heaved himself out of her line of fire, running for the fall-painted trees rimming the park. The oranges and reds of the foliage burned bright like the afterimage of the white noon sun, superimposed before his vision as he ducked beneath the dark cover of the leaves.
As he trampled further past the branches and twigs that bit at the skin beneath his jumpsuit, this niggled at the back of his mind: he was a ghost, he could turn intangible; he should try. But the thought felt distant compared to the loud crumple of leaves – bled dry, ripped open by the force of their boots against them – and the head-pounding need to get away – from Mom – that he shoved it aside and twisted his head about, praying for a place to hide.
Nothing was making sense. All the trees looked featureless, smears of vibrant autumn color against harsh, dry bark, towering over him. The canopy let in smatterings of light, and his gaze leapt from sunlit patch to sunlit patch, until as if God had given him an answer, a low-hanging tree swollen with leaves lay just out of reach of the light.
White-gloved fingers dug into the bark, and he pulled himself up, biting hard into his lip as he glanced down and strained not to stain the trunk with his ghostly blood. It would be evidence. He couldn’t leave evidence.
The tree was almost twice his height, and up he scrambled, feeling as though he were reliving his childhood, how Mom had encouraged him to climb up trees with Jazz in another spot in this very park, hands braced at his back in case he fell. He couldn’t not think about it as he made his way up, but when his hand reached for the leaves he grit his teeth and willed himself intangible.
It worked. He crumpled into the indent atop the trunk, feeling his breaths coming in quick.
And then, oh and then, did the pain set in.
It struck him like a snake in waiting, coldness slithering into his extremities, tears and sweat stinging his eyes. But he didn’t dare close them; he let his vision swim and stay on the crisscrossing of branches and leaves above him. He pressed his lips together, didn’t dare breathe, and strained his hearing for the crunch of footsteps below.
Leaves crackled.
Was that her? Or was that the wind above?
He wondered, then, if he should turn back human. His mother might have brought along his father’s ghost detection device; she had shown it to him over toast and orange juice that morning. Little hand-held devices with indicators that glowed red in response to ectoplasmic activity within a kilometer’s radius.
But a tiny, wild voice pounded this thought into his head: if he released his hold over his ghost, the ectoplasm would transform into blood, and the blood would sink into the fabric of his white shirt. How could he return to his mother, whom he had abandoned in the park in search of the ghost? How could he look her in the eyes and stammer a lie about why flakes of blood clung to his skin, why its metallic whiff permeated his clothes?
Whose blood is this? He imagined her crying. Who hurt you, Danny?
No. It wasn’t worth a little ectoplasm lost, not when his body could now easily make more.
With the comfort of a decision made, he relaxed into the rough bark against his shoulders, let the branches surround him like the bars of a cage, and prayed he would not be found.

Eyes
For Dannymay 2020
Also in AO3 and FF
Danny was tired, it didn't matter if he has school the next day, the he hasn't sleep for two days and here he was, at 3 am in his room with two the Observants rambling on and on about him being a king cause he won against the last one and bla bla bla...
Looking bored out of his mind at the ghosts floating in front of him, Danny tried to kill his boredom by thinking of ways to avoid this responsibility that he doesn't want anything to do with.
“… in an event of law making there needs to be at least five meeting with the council to decide if the law will be considered to bring to discus in the next meeting…” Observant 1 was saying in a monotone voice that was making a better job of making him sleep than Mr. Lancer was when droning in poems, about poems.
“Alright! That’s enough! This is nice and all, but because I won’t be the king you don’t need to tell me any of this, so if you could get out of my room before I force you it would be great!” Danny interrupted them with a fasle cheering voice, he was falling asleep with his eyes open.
“We need a king Phantom and you are the best choice we have…” Observant 2 started to say.
“Is all your head a giant eye?” Danny interrupted what would be the fourth time they said that same speech with the first thing that came to his mind.
“...What?” Observant 1 said perplexed.
“That if your head is a giant eye, how is that you can speak without a mouth?” Danny asked.
“Uh… well... we…” Observant 2 mumbled.
“And if you don’t have a mouth do you even have a body? Is your body just your eyeballs and the rest is just a very long tail?” Danny continued.
“Well… that..” Observant 2 tried to said before getting interrupted again.
“And do your eyes ever get irritated? They are way to big for things to not get in there, how do you clean them? Do you have to clean them all the time or you go intangible?” Danny keep talking trying to make the most quantity of questions, not that he wanted answers he just wanted to annoy the ones annoying him.
“Uh… well, we’ll come back later Phantom. We’ll… just leave” Observant 1 said floating slowly towards the door looking very uncomfortable, his partner followed behind him.
“Ok by! Don’t come back!” Danny waved cheerfully, happy to finally getting rid of them.
After waiting for a few seconds making sure that they wouldn’t come back Danny went to sleep hoping that no other ghost interrupted his rest in the night.

Danny Phantom drabble.
-
Sam's brush curved a cool, damp streak under Danny’s left eye, and her even breaths warmed his cheeks. That soothed him, so he dared not blink or ask her what she was creating.
She pulled away. The air-conditioner blew its gentle gush into his face and goosebumps prickled along his arms, bare in the black singlet she had picked for him. She reached out, placing fingers under his chin and tilting his face to meet her own.
A hum passed her lips. “What do you think?” Stepping away, she gestured towards the mirror before him. “Operation Spooky a success?”
He turned towards his reflection. On the left side of his head, Sam’s thin purple pins flattened his silver hair against his skull. Red ink cut a mask of roses next to his ectoplasmic green eye, blossoming across his cheekbone.
He huffed a laugh. The being in the mirror followed, unpainted lips stretching to reveal rows of white teeth, and his gaze slid towards the satisfied smile on Sam’s face.
“If you mean, did you successfully turn me into a voodoo doll?" he asked. "Then yes."
She jabbed her brush in his face, its tip shiny with red. “Not voodoo doll. Art. And you agreed to this, so no backing out now.”
He rolled his eyes. His half-mask of roses shifted with the motion. “Y’know, they asked specifically for Phantom.”
“Where’s the fun in that?” she argued. “It’s Halloween. We gotta up the creepiness.”
“You mean ghostliness.”
“Same difference.” A palm smacked the crown of his head, digging into the mop of hair and turning his startled eyes back towards their reflection. She leaned her face close, so they were cheek to cheek, an inch apart. In the mirror, he watched the gleam in her purple eyes, the wicked smile across her lips.
“Now,” she murmured. “Don’t move. Let me do the other half.”
Her hand against his scalp held him in place. He acquiesced.
