Advertising has been abolished forever after french brand Groupe Danone's failed attempt at developing a mascot for their iconic health food product. "The Activia Shooter"—a menacing humanized form of the well-known yogurt, clad in military surplus attire and bearing an AR-15 rifle—has forever forsaken the brand's image and brought about an indefinite moratorium on all forms of commercial advertising. Critics and former supporters alike agreed the depiction of digestive issues as cowering civilians being taunted then executed by the new mascot was "tasteless and confusing". All members of the advertising department of Danone have denied responsibility for the concept, claiming they were driven by a dark force that compelled the creation of the Activia Shooter character. Some suspect this is a cover out of fear of assassination by Groupe Danone's cartel ties. The Coca-Cola company's former advertising representative spoke yesterday on the decision from all companies worldwide to cease all forms of advertising: "I think we're all just done here now."

Hey! I've been seeing your posts about Hello From the Magic Tavern, and I am intrigued. Would you recommend listening to seasons one and two, or even just specific episodes of those, before jumping on?

Hm, this is a tricky question! 

I think it depends on what you’re interested in. If you’re just interested in a funny podcast, then starting at any point is fine.  Season 3 is supposed to be more plot-focused and an easy jumping on point for new listeners, so I can recommend just starting there if you want to try the podcast out and see if you like it before investing more time in it. 

There’s about 100 episodes per season, and most of them do not forward the plot a lot. Early episodes are fine, but still suffer from that familiar show/podcast problem where they’re not a good reflection of what the show has become. They’re very short, and have a couple of repetitive jokes. 

HftMT was conceived as mostly a comedy improv show with a fantasy twist, and for the majority of the episodes they interview guests about their ridiculous Foon characters. ‘Plot’ was something that only slowly started building over the course of 200 episodes, the majority of which never see the cast leaving the Vermilion Minotour (the aforementioned ‘magic tavern’ where they record the podcast). 

There’s a couple of plot heavy-episodes that are fun in the previous seasons, but I feel like it’s hard to jump in on those because there’s a lot of character-building that is missing if you’re a new listener (specifically character backgrounds of returning guests who turn out to be pivotal to the plot).

I don’t think there’s a guide out there for important episodes, but if you don’t want to listen to 200 episodes, but do want backstory on important side-characters and plot, I would suggest the following episodes:

(Note: This only focuses on Foon plot, not on the Space Bunker plot and the Mysterious Man, Craig and Tricia). 

Season 1: 

Episode 1 - Introduces the premise of the podcast, introduces the three central characters, and the general flavour of the podcast. (Warning: There’s a lot of bestiality talk. I mean, Chunt’s a shapeshifter. It’s a natural topic of conversation. Also, the Wizard State.) 

Episode 16 - Spintax the Green - Introduces Spintax, Usidore’s rival and a returning character. 

Episode 18 - Blemish - Blemish is introduced. He’s gross and weird. 

Episode 51 - Baron Ragoon - Introduces Baron Ragoon, one of the Dark Lord minions. He’s a frequently returning character. 

Episode 59 - Dr. Ward - This episode is different than all the other episodes, and I’m not going to spoil it, but the boys say this is one of the episodes they’re most proud of and just… give it a listen.

Episode 77 - The Baron and the Frog - The Baron returns! And reveals his connections to the Dark Lord and some of the Dark Lord’s motivations.

Epsidoe 93 - Goblin General - Just a ‘normal’ episode, there’s some light plot stuff about the Dark Lord and goblins, and a murder plot on Arnie’s life - but the end of the episode is important to give context to the next episode. 

Episode 94 - Sarah for Real - Arnie’s wife makes an appearance in Foon. Also, this episode made me really sad for Arnie. 

Episode 95 - Tom the Spy - Prince Tomblain Belaroth infiltrates Shrike to spy on the Baron and the Dark Lord. 

Episode 100 - Usidore’s Quest - Season 1 finale episode. Things go down in the Vermilion Minotaur and the town of Hogsface.

Season 2:

Season 2, Episode 1 - The Podcast - The aftermath of the battle of Hogsface.

S2, Episode 4 - Not the Sheriff - Some insight into what is going on in Hogsface.

S2, Episode 16 - Tom the Girlfriend - Tom returns! …With the Baron. 

S2, Episode 17 - Crazy Jared - The Baron and Blemish in one episode. There’s some light plot in regards to the secrets of the Vermilion Minatour. 

S2, Episode 18 - The Basement - Several murders happen at the Vermilion Minotaur. 

S2, Episode 32 - Dark Lord’s Birthday Party - The boys mingle with evil party guests and make plans on how to kill the Dark Lord. Everyone gets drunk. There’s murder orgy’s. The Dark Lord shows up.

i kno this blog has been no activia for the past week or so but i was Thinking lately abt why loomis is considered such a contentious character by fandom here -- not only being a filter for carpenter’s ableist inspiration for michael (a man he saw in an asylum with a ‘schizophrenic stare’) buuuuuut also that loomis’ character is another pillar in a pantheon of characters within classic horror that aligns with the trope of The Savant ( think van helsing, older priest in the exorcist, tangina in poltergeist etc.) many of these characters have a preternatural knowledge of ‘true evil’, especially if they come from a religiously christian motivated basis, therefore the evil they describe is aligned with the satanic / eg.  loomis: ‘the blackest eyes, the devil’s eyes’ 

          so, in halloween, on the one hand it is contemporary in its basis, it actively concerns itself with being a modern horror that wants to portray a terrifying and traumatic event in an everyday safe-as-houses town, but it still relies on age old formula of narratives throughout media history bc good vs. evil is timeless, however loomis is a therapist / doctor -- who is waxing near-shakespearean dramatics that u would hear from a priest. (sidenote: carpenter also cast donald pleasence as the priest in prince of darkness lmao)            this kind of Crusade against michael that loomis swears himself to inevitably creates tension when stressing the reality of his occupation and status as a doctor with a phd - especially when considering the long history of medical malpractise against ppl who are mentally ill .. but carpenter’s purpose is constantly trying to remind the audience that michael is an embodiment of a person who is evil  - michael is all at once a human and not, he is The Shape who wears a faceless man’s mask .. he is not based within the fantastical, he is not an unseen mist of a demonic force, he doesnt turn into a bat or possess a toy clown, he’s not a virus nor thunderstorm that can raise the dead, he’s an Evil Man           the objectivity of the metaphor loomis ‘prescribes’ michael with is obviously met with scrutiny in the film - the nurse in the car : ‘can’t we call ‘it’ ‘him’?’ carpenter is well aware of how hyperbolic loomis’ character is within his modern context but the modern context necessitates that the boy in the 1960s who kills his sister with no given purpose is sent to an asylum ... rather than some kind of Saint Samuel’s School for Demonic Boys which would be more befitting of loomis’ ‘diagnosis’. AND AGAIN, it is exactly the conflation here that creates conflict: an asylum that’s purpose is to psychologically rehabilitate so a patient can get better  --  with a doctor who is enforcing the savant trope of Knowing Evil - projecting that with a purpose to terrify an audience. .. the conflict of the modern reality with the ageless hyperbole is what is so divisive about loomis’ character....            whereas when we as an audience have laurie as the exemplarary Good that combats Evil there is much more evidential substance to what the horror of halloween is bc all the vague shit loomis has been saying for dramatic tension & build up is RIGHT THERE .. laurie is unquestionably right in her assumption of michael being evil, as a victim of his perpetration she evokes fear in the audience through empathy, whereas loomis is only an authoritative voice to michael’s perpetration -- trying to convince us to fear him through superstition.             idk .... i mainly wrote this all out to try and address / make some sort of sense of how loomis’ character is percieved ... like real talk in the end i dont think continuously calling him out for bein an ableist doctor achieves much bc the purpose of michael’s character is to traumatize and kill - and repetitive amounts of ‘well loomis OBVIOUSLY failed him’ has much progressive intent behind it bc all it is is criticism without a progressive conclusion -- bc he can never have a progressive conclusion (ie. michael’s treatment in smiths grove actually helps him) with what there is in canon being so genre and character defining........ obv it depends how someone sees michael and my interpreation leans for the most part towards ‘Evil Man is misogynistic and watches women before killing them apart from one who he still feels entitled to’ so u kno .......
