Jake suggested that Randy go to a fair on one of the planets where they settled. To dispel the guy's clouded thoughts. He decided that going on fun rides would help him take his mind off things. And just when they decided that everything was going as smoothly as planned, Dark Danny met them. Honestly, this is my first time drawing Dark in a mobile app. Before this, I drew on a notebook a couple of times, and to be honest, it has very cool proportions.

Fanfic Recommendation: The Uplifted Series

It has been a while since I did a long-form fanfic rec, but this fic series deserves it: The Uplifted Series by DarkDanny currently standing at five fics, the series stands at over 700,000 words, so if you want a fic that will keep you busy for a long while, this is the one for you.

Uplifted is a series of Mass Effect Fanfics, beginning with Uplifted and roceeding through Intervention, Revolution, Last Days and Arrival and there are more fics to come, though at an unknown timetable.

The basic premise is this: the Quarians, fresh from being expelled from their home planet by the Geth (the Migrant Fleet is a few decades old at this point) hit on the idea of uplifting a pre-space race, trying to avoid the mistakes made with the Krogan, and in time, use them to help retake Rannoch. They find Earth in the 1930s and watch as WWII starts and after much consideration, and without knowing a rather key detail, they decide to back Germany - their plan is to help Germany win a secure peace and then begin the process from there.

So yes, this fic centers on the Quarians helping WWII Germany. The Quarians, at the start, do not know about the full extent of Nazi ideology nor do they know about the extermination camps, the Final Solution or just how fucking evil Nazi leadership is. They do find out those things, and realizing it's a little too late to change which human power they're backing, they back a cabal of Wehrmacht officers against the National Socialist Party, and so the main thrust of the series, of the five that form the sort of 'First Leg' of the author's planned overall story arcs, is the overthrow of the Nazis and the installation of a new government.

So, as you'd imagine, time for me to slap a big fat Warning - several of them - on the fic. This fic has Nazis. Lots of Nazis. Even the German characters who aren't Nazis are still the people who let the Nazis come to power for various reasons, and were okay with the racism and fascism and general badness, albeit not with Extermination or the full extent of Nazi insanity. There are almost no scenes from the POV of people like the White Rose or the kinds of people who were opposed to the Nazis from the start.

So yes, there will be a lot of racism and anti-Semitism, though at no point does the author ever stand behind those ideas. One of the main characters, Joachim Hoch, begins the series as a card-carrying member of the Waffen-SS, a proud believer in Nazi ideas - over the course of five fics, we see him, slowly at first but then faster, begin to shed Nazism, realize what is really happening in the camps (and reject the entire program of extermination) and reject nearly everything he once stood for. He doesn't come out of this redemption arc, which includes playing a pivotal role in overthrowing the Third Reich, perfect by any means.

By the end, he still holds onto a number of ideas that we would call racist and anti-Semitic, and to his credit, he's well aware he will never be able to escape the worldview he had drilled into his head for over a decade. He knows his redemption is a process, one he may never complete.

Additionally, the relationship between Hoch and Hana'Jarvia, a Quarian who serves as the female lead to the series, does not really begin very healthily - it is quite messed up at first (which makes it interesting) but probably not to everyone's taste. It too gets better, over time, but again, imperfect. And again, the author doesn't really flinch when showing that it is fucked up.

But experiencing Hoch's journey, watching the Nazis be overthrown, reading this excellently written series is still, in my mind, well worth it, if you can stomach the issues of the story itself. Hoch's story arc is especially compelling, and if nothing else, when you get to Arrival, you get to see Nazi leaders, the historical Commandants of various camps and other pillars of the Extermination be killed in all manner of entertainingly brutal ways.

It is an excellent read that explores both grey and grey morality and stark black and white morality, explores well the question of why so many let the Nazis take over and how they held onto power, and then let's us see them die, pathetic and beaten. Which is always fun.

The story is compelling, engaging and powerful. It will gutwrench you, but it will also be fun. It is just really fucking good, in my view.

Even if you aren't familiar with Mass Effect, I think that many of my followers will still enjoy this series - most of the essential details end up getting explained in the text by the Quarians to the humans, and some quick googling can usually answer the remaining questions one might have. It is a really good read, and one that I heartily Recommend.
