The Data Migration Odyssey: A Journey Across Platforms
As a database engineer, I thought I'd seen it all—until our company decided to migrate our entire database system to a new platform. What followed was an epic adventure filled with unexpected challenges, learning experiences, and a dash of heroism.
It all started on a typical Monday morning when my boss, the same stern woman with a flair for the dramatic, called me into her office. "Rookie," she began (despite my years of experience, the nickname had stuck), "we're moving to a new database platform. I need you to lead the migration."
I blinked. Migrating a database wasn't just about copying data from one place to another; it was like moving an entire city across the ocean. But I was ready for the challenge.
Phase 1: Planning the Expedition
First, I gathered my team and we started planning. We needed to understand the differences between the old and new systems, identify potential pitfalls, and develop a detailed migration strategy. It was like preparing for an expedition into uncharted territory.
We started by conducting a thorough audit of our existing database. This involved cataloging all tables, relationships, stored procedures, and triggers. We also reviewed performance metrics to identify any existing bottlenecks that could be addressed during the migration.
Phase 2: Mapping the Terrain
Next, we designed the new database design schema using schema builder online from dynobird. This was more than a simple translation; we took the opportunity to optimize our data structures and improve performance. It was like drafting a new map for our city, making sure every street and building was perfectly placed.
For example, our old database had a massive "orders" table that was a frequent source of slow queries. In the new schema, we split this table into more manageable segments, each optimized for specific types of queries.
Phase 3: The Great Migration
With our map in hand, it was time to start the migration. We wrote scripts to transfer data in batches, ensuring that we could monitor progress and handle any issues that arose. This step felt like loading up our ships and setting sail.
Of course, no epic journey is without its storms. We encountered data inconsistencies, unexpected compatibility issues, and performance hiccups. One particularly memorable moment was when we discovered a legacy system that had been quietly duplicating records for years. Fixing that felt like battling a sea monster, but we prevailed.
Phase 4: Settling the New Land
Once the data was successfully transferred, we focused on testing. We ran extensive queries, stress tests, and performance benchmarks to ensure everything was running smoothly. This was our version of exploring the new land and making sure it was fit for habitation.
We also trained our users on the new system, helping them adapt to the changes and take full advantage of the new features. Seeing their excitement and relief was like watching settlers build their new homes.
Phase 5: Celebrating the Journey
After weeks of hard work, the migration was complete. The new database was faster, more reliable, and easier to maintain. My boss, who had been closely following our progress, finally cracked a smile. "Excellent job, rookie," she said. "You've done it again."
To celebrate, she took the team out for a well-deserved dinner. As we clinked our glasses, I felt a deep sense of accomplishment. We had navigated a complex migration, overcome countless challenges, and emerged victorious.
Lessons Learned
Looking back, I realized that successful data migration requires careful planning, a deep understanding of both the old and new systems, and a willingness to tackle unexpected challenges head-on. It's a journey that tests your skills and resilience, but the rewards are well worth it.
So, if you ever find yourself leading a database migration, remember: plan meticulously, adapt to the challenges, and trust in your team's expertise. And don't forget to celebrate your successes along the way. You've earned it!

What happens when doing it iteratively has completely failed? Sometimes databases and political systems alike are built from scratch. Sometimes they have to be built from scratch (for example, a new company or country). Sometimes, in both cases, they even work in their 1.0 version without significant problems. That's not to say there won't be a 1.1 or even a 2.0 - but that happens either way. (It's harder, but iterative construction has different pre-requisites, and if those aren't being met and the status quo is failing hard enough, then non-iterative change is inevitable, chosen or otherwise…)
I think a lot about how, if the glorious violent revolution happens, every kid with significant medical needs in a hospital where power gets cut will die.
You can decide you're willing to sacrifice your own life, but you don't get to tell everybody else on the planet that they're acceptable collateral damage.
#change#politics#database design#computers#governments#iterative design#new-build design#in case you are wondering the context is seeing the British government try and fail to iterate Brexit#despite nearly all the work having already been done for it#and despite getting a huge amount of leniency from the EU#this is why one of the fastest-growing economies is on the brink of bankruptcy at the same time#because it would probably have been quicker easier and less harmful to start from scratch if Brexit was going to be done#Brexit should not have been done but that's another story

hyperfixated on this game so hard i tried to recreate ac syndicate's animus database using html css and js👍
i will make this responsive though, i've only started doing the frontend but i'll also start doing the backend as soon as i finish this
basically this is gonna be a website that will allow you to create a database of your assassin's creed OCs (btw this was inspired by @gwen-the-assassin's idea <33) and help you with worldbuilding and making AUs (i know the ac fanon wiki already exists for that but i wanted to make the experience of keeping a database more immersive u know....)
this might take a while to be completed, but I'll try to post updates on it as much as possible! if there are any programmers/web developers in the ac fandom that want to contribute to this project plsplspls DM me!!
actual pic of the database for comparison:
ik it's not entirely accurate but this is the simplest database in the game that i could recreate lmao
also code snippets just cuz (+ me crashing out)
#u know what#i might just pass this for my database systems class#assassin's creed#assassin's creed syndicate#ac syndicate#animus#video games#gaming#programming#coding#codeblr#web development#ui ux design#html css#javascript

Dreamed about OgCale and Rok Soo being roommates besties in a modern fantasy Earth AU—
Except the whole dream was OgCale swinging and humming in the kitchen, preparing a dessert as breakfast. Then he opened Rok Soo's door and threw a pillow at him, saying "WAKE UP, BITCH. THERE'S BREAKFAST"
Then the two of them had a quiet "Rok Soo's birthday" breakfast and fed a cat while recalling how they met.
Apparently Rok Soo was sitting in a bank outside a house/apartment complex? And OgCale came and told him no one sits there because the woman living in the store above likes to water her plants too much. Cue Rok Soo getting a whole bucket of water rain over him. OgCale then got him to come over to his apartment, which was nearby, to get him dry. I don't remember what he said exactly but we know the real reason is he's kind when he doesn't have to put an act.
Anyways, Rok Soo ended up staying for the night. Later they became roommates because OgCale's cat kinda adopted him, so OgCale decided he was fine. OgCale jokes about that a lot. So does Rok Soo, just most people don't notice he's joking. He calls the cat "Milky-nim".
#I'm pretty sure the apartment was at both their names#ogcale changed it to be that way after some time living together#bc he didn't want roksoo to feel like he could take away his home at anytime#it might had been his first but it wasn't really a home until he got used to feel someone else there#before that he felt like he could take his dog and milky and walk away at anytime and don't come back#rok soo is his bestie and kinda like having a sibling but without complicated external factors#—so he decided the best way was to make it so he legally owned the apartment as much as ogCale#can't remember why rok soo was sitting there. i think it had to do with his uncle doing something that put Rok Soo in trouble#despite not having seen the guy in ages. (ノ ̄皿 ̄)ノ ⌒== ┫#rok soo was working part-time in some place that I'm sure was the company but in a less screwed world#but he was doing a sort of paid-intern/walking database job that had started as just damage control#and ogcale had a design company and was getting a title bc he likes to do stuff he enjoys#rok soo thinks he's a weirdo bc he only gets lazy about things he considers a bother (some people) or boring#and og cale thinks rok soo is the strange one bc he can go hours without doing anything and consider it the most fun “activity”#og cale#original cale henituse#og cale henituse#kim rok soo#lcf#lout of the count’s family#trash of the count's family#tcf#milky is short for milky way and he has white-stained black fur#he's really small and probably abnormal bc they both had seen him glow in the dark at some moment#the dog is a big girl and is called Balto bc she was really stubborn about being calle that

#misc polls#I tried to avoid animals that already exist or could easily be made with existing bases#like no owls bc blathers and celeste#no donkeys bc we already have horses#I know tortimer is a tortoise but think of the potential a shell has for designs#plus tortimer is very old I think a villager turtle would look substantially different#and lyle is an otter not a weasel#I also had long haired cat pointy eared dog and floppy eared rabbit on here but replaced them with more unique animals#had to really comb through littelest pet shop databases to think of some of these lmao

data-riku if he was awesome (dont kill me data-yaoi fans)
jokes aside its always bothered me that the personification of jiminy’s journal was just a lazily reused model of re:chain cloaked riku as a cheap way to not only save money but to get people attached to what is essentially just a book. like be honest data-riku fans you would not have cared about him if he didn’t look like riku. which is why i know data-riku fans will hate my for fun design.
aaand, because i know someone is gonna probably say something about this: the reason why repliku works is that their entire struggle is formed around the fact that they look like riku, for data-riku there is no point that he looks like riku besides being lazy.
#beep boop you want fries with that#jiminy's journal#kingdom hearts#before no one asks. no this guy is not appearing in database recovered . i just drew this design for fun#and uh yeah. idk why i drew the they put bugs in him guy but i felt silly#i honestly really love this design and am sad that it wont be used in anything related to my rewrites#maybe i will find SOME use…#but yuuup i went super toony with this one ehehe.

Help choose the Navigation button style for the Amare Games Database!
I've been revamping some of the visual elements of the website and making sure everything is WCAG compliant for web accessibility. While doing that I thought it would be fun to do a poll to see which style of buttons folks like better for the website. I've added some images of what the 2 options look like in both dark and light mode.
So do you prefer rounded corners of pill-style buttons? * Also I'm not sure why but Tumblr decided to destroy the image quality of the examples. But you folks get the idea.

The RFP asks for some relevant projects, and please include the following information, including budget and "actual cost."
The information I have for a project includes:
Pre-bid cost estimate
Construction contract award amount
Final construction contract amount
Our company's fee
Construction cost
. . . none of which look like "budget," but one or two might, maybe? count as "actual cost." (We'll probably use one of those! Because people are very bad about recording every. last. type. of cost. for the fucking projects.)
#UGH#angst and woe#work bullshit#i hate it here#and - bonus round! - the project principals magically expect us to always have all the numbers!#because they provided them in the past of course!#sometimes they did; or perhaps they have lost track of which of the dozen or types of cost/fee/etc they HAVE provided us#but of course it's -marketing's- fault if we don't have allllllllll the fucking numbers#not the design team's fault for never filling out the big comprehensive company database :) :) :)

getting like a month's worth of emails done today and realizing why people think i'm so busy all the time. if you count all the sub-areas i'm responsible for like they should, as entire categories unto themselves, i think i have easily double the # of my coworkers. and i'm BORED
#work woes#website design. database redesign. reporting crosswalk. other reporting crosswalk. strategic development. training 1. training 2. training#four top level categories. six subcategories that are sometimes an entire health plan. and they dont even know abt the minecraft addiction

the head of secondary at my school (i THINK that's what he is??) was walking into the school as i was walking out and he decided to start small talk with me???
"how have exams been going?"
"...they've been alright"
"alright?" *makes so-so hand motion*
"yeah"
"have any more left?"
"classics"
"so next week? well good luck!"
"thanks—..."
this post isn't supposed to mean anything i'm just a bit confused lmao
#in other news my computing exam went just about as well as i thought it would#databases was pretty easy besides one question that was worded in a way i couldn't really understand#software dev/computer systems? not so much.#i spent like. 30 minutes (maybe more) trying to figure out an answer that would work for question 6c but NOTHING STUCK#tried every sort of design method i could think of. yes even pseudocode (which i hate).#in the end i just gave up. so the page for 6c is just. a mess of scribbles and misery#also my classics exam has been postponed to wednesday. oh goodie! /s#misia has a stupid thought#ignoreable post

Lately, I've realized how much I consider fashion design when I'm doing character designs. It only struck me when I was doodling those Pokemon redesigns, how I care about the outfits characters wear and how it coordinates and the details and what it SAYS about the character wearing it!
...got too detailed, gotta add a cut
Hideyoshi's fit is about him being sloppy, careless, but still a legitimate professor (somehow). He's got the labcoat but it's slipping off his shoulder, slacks but a tropical shirt (collar unbuttoned, half untucked). His hair is pulled back but not properly; he's got a bit of stubble! His slacks are baggy on him... A size too big? Or an old-fashioned style? His shoes are worn converse--not an athletic shoe, but he gets up and moves, he's a bit active! Despite it all, there's still touches to point towards legitimacy, though. A clean coat, pen in the shirt pocket, a proper belt... He's making an attempt, just not succeeding! I think when it's time to draw the actual professor, I'll mirror a lot of it... Make it clear what he's aiming for.
Mayumi, on the other hand, is aiming for "office worker who doesn't want to stay at her desk." Her look is fundamentally a nice pantsuit... Well tailored and coordinated in business appropriate colors, with some fashionable touches that wouldn't be out of place in the office. She's not wearing a blazer but her vest and shirt are both classy and tailored, and she's coordinated her tie with the rest of her outfit (I drew small but I imagine the pin on her tie to be a symbol of the Pokemon League). And for all that, she's still active! Wide legged pants highlight movement, a chunky heeled boot is easier to move in than high heels, and she's rolled up her sleeves! I wanted to convey a woman who looks ready to throw down but still clearly fits an office setting.
I worked out Kaori's outfit yesterday, trying to keep elements from her original look (kimono styled neckline and sleeves, bandana and hair pin) while adding some feminine touches... I'm going with a skort-like pair of overalls, long socks and Mary Janes for a very girly look that I want to evoke Pokemon protagonist outfits. I'm giving her some kind of pokegear and a Pokemon Protagonist bag, too. I want to keep her vibes, but I also want her to feel like a proper trainer...
Wakana and Defiant are next on my list, and here I find myself stumped a bit. I could draw THEM, but I'm trying to figure out what they WEAR.
Wakana's tricky in two ways: first, her initial design is maybe one of the best I've ever designed and second, she's got a certain detachment from her clothing! She cares for textures and how some clothing fits, and she wants to have elements of traditional Japanese clothing, but otherwise I conceive of her as someone who typically wears what other people buy for her. There's a reason her DA3 outfit is primarily her uniform and her initial FFD look was supposed to be "just clothing she owns". It's harder thinking about what she would want to wear in this setting... And I think I also have to decide where she is in her life and how she relates to her family. I've got some ideas, but nothing solid yet.
Defiant is also a bit hard bc... She's a game character. Most of her outfits are based directly off clothing in game, so I'm picking from limited options rather than choosing my own. And when I do draw her in other clothes, I've done a lot of VERY cutesie or sexy looks, neither of which feels right for what I'm hoping to do. It's such a different setting from FFXIV, too, so there's a lot to revise and reimagine.
I know most of this is... Like. It's only me who is thinking this deeply! But it means a LOT to me to put the thought in, and I want to have it just right. My little hill to die on.
#rambling about design choices wheee!#this is one part of my distaste for generative art: there's no INTENTIONALITY in the clothing#the AI databases can only grab what fits your tags... it can't make any decisions that convey meaning#there is MEANING in CLOTHING!!
