“Why are you torturing her with this movie?” Walter said as he sat down next to you. Davids jaw was tightened as he sat and watched Laurence of Arabia for the umpteenth time.

“David she’s practically half asleep” he said before pulling you into his lap. He wasn’t wrong, you were struggling to keep your eyes open but you give David a small smile anyway and try to stay awake.

Walter makes it hard for you though as he secures his arm around your waist and starts rubbing your back. Your head rests on his shoulder and his head rests against the top of yours.

“That’s completely unfair, you getting her to sleep faster” David says annoyed at what the synthetic was doing. “I have no idea what you’re talking about” Walter replied as he threw a throw blanket over your body.

You fell asleep soon after with Walter watching you and David watching the movie. When the movie ended Walter carried you off to bed, David in tow. Once you were under the covers David sat down and pressed a kiss to your forehead.

He watched you for a bit before leaving with Walter. “Since you watched your movie I’m going to watch a documentary” Walter said and David smiled and said “I’ll join you”.

Today's poll includes multiple songs off the soundtrack for the movie, Flashdance. We've seen songs from soundtracks featured on these polls, with You Light Up My Life and Evergreen coming to mind (plus songs from actual musicals). But instead of just diegetic ballads and showtunes, now we're seeing more songs marketing themselves around their connection to the films they were written for. As music videos are being shot more like movies and movies are being shot more like music videos, the meeting of these two worlds makes sense. Especially when music videos start to include actual clips from the movies, MTV was the place to get a wide audience for your music.

But not everyone could see the benefits right away. While MTV kicked off with a bang, their initial video rotation infamously featured no Black acts. The network's explanation was to insist that the exclusion wasn't based on race, but rather MTV's status as a "rock station".

1983 also marks the 25th anniversary of Motown Records and a television special (Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever) was broadcasted to mark the occasion. While the night is marked by more legends than I can list off, the notable performance for this blurb was Michael Jackson. After performing with the Jackson 5 for the first time since the 70's, Michael Jackson performed his new solo hit, Billie Jean. This number marks the public debut of the moonwalk, the musician's signature dance move that arguably cemented his status as a pop culture icon.

In hindsight, it feels ludicrous that an artist like Michael Jackson was initially unable to get on MTV. Fortunately, people at the time thought it was ludicrous as well. Both Rick James and David Bowie called out the network years before (with James being especially vocal in critiquing MTV for its exclusion of Black artists). But allegedly, Michael Jackson's record company found a way to get Billie Jean on the channel. To quote Walter Yetnikoff, the president of CBS Records at the time:

“I said to MTV, ‘I’m pulling everything we have off the air, all our product. I’m not going to give you any more videos. And I’m going to go public and fucking tell them about the fact you don’t want to play music by a black guy.’” (x)

Whether in response to Yetnikoff or not, Billie Jean aired on MTV March 10th, 1983, making it the first music video by a Black artist to be featured in heavy rotation on the channel. Later this year, the cinematic possibilities of the music video would be pushed further with the 13 minute video for Thriller. Michael was already a star without the push from MTV, and with how popular his videos were, it could be argued that MTV needed Michael as much if not more than he needed them. But while MTV's problems with race and representation were far from over, this moment helped pave the way for many other Black artists who will become iconic figures on the channel.

Articles of a Treaty concluded at the Cherokee Agency

within the Cherokee Nation, between Major Genl. Andrew

Jackson, Joseph M[c]Minn Governor of the State of

[crossed out] the state of [/] Tennessee and Genl. David Meriwether, com

missoners Plenipotentiary of the United States of America

of the one part & the chiefs, head men & warriors of

the Cherokee Nation east of the Mississippi river & the

chiefs head men & warriors of the Cherokee on the

Arkansas river, and their deputies John D Chisholm

and James Rogers, duly authorized by the chiefs of

the Cherokee on the Arkansas River in open council

by written power of attorney duly signed and executed

in  presence of Joseph Sevier and William Ware

     Where as in the autumn of the year 1808 a

deportation from the upper and lower Cherokee Town,

July authorized by their Nation, went on to the city of

Washington, the first named to declare to the President

of the United States their anxious desire to engage in

the pursuits of Agriculture and civilized life in the

country they then occupied and to make known to the

* Sometimes he will hide them before you go to bed and make a silly excuse. “I guess they ran away, at least you have me”

* He figures out a way where you both get your way. He takes them while you sleep and replaces them with himself. He loves when you nuzzle your head into his chest while you sleep.

* At the end of the day David concludes that he can coexist with these stuffed creatures that can bring you comfort as long as he also gets love and attention too.

* He is neutral about them, he actually thinks they’re kind of funny to look at.

* Sometimes when you’re getting ready for bed he just stares at them.

* He knows the benefits of having stuffed animals or objects of comfort.

* He talks about all the important benefits that holding a stuffed animal has.

* He encourages you to have them around if you’re feeling anxious m or upset.

* It’s like the devil and the angel with the two of them

The year was 2017. I had just seen Alien: Covenant and decided Michael Fassbender as David 8/Walter was possibly the single hottest thing on earth since that time a volcano ate Pompeii. Me, a greysexual, feeling attraction for maybe the third time in my life: This is my fate. I must consume this man’s career.

Thus began the tumultuous summer of Michael Fassbender. There were the “I’m doing this for the paycheck” blockbusters like X-Men, the hidden gems like McQueen’s Shame and Hunger, the nigh unwatchables like Assassin’s Creed, and mostly, the totally unforgettables, which are not even worth looking up on IMDb to name here. 

Among this buffet of mediocrity, I found what would become one of my favorite movies of all time: Fish Tank. I won’t lie, the first time I watched it I nearly turned it off at the 20 minute mark. It was clearly about British classism in the early 2000s, and I, an American, was watching it in Ohio over a decade later. Not only that, there was a very sad horse that was upsetting me.

But then:

So, I stayed. And I’m glad I did. The story is: the main character, Mia (Katie Jarvis), struggles with tension in her family while escaping to various emptied-out places to practice dancing. Enter her mother’s new boyfriend, Conor (Michael Fassbender), an oft-shirtless presence in their crowded flat. While Mia is hesitant toward Conor at first, his kindness (and by that I mean sleazy, inappropriate interest which she perceives as kindness) wins her over, and she becomes increasingly obsessed with him. And he doesn’t seem to mind it…until she goes way too far.

If you, like me, marvel at Michael Fassbender’s itty bitty waist paired with his persistent typecasting as a morally complicated bad guy, and enjoy movies that make you feel like you’re watching a slow, sexy trainwreck, then you too will love Fish Tank.

What made you ship it?

I started watching the x-files with my parents when I was a kid. It was post-original run, but my parents 1st and 2nd rewatches after the original air. Mulder and Scully physically look just like my parents. They had the same height difference and are the same age. That and also David and Gillian are incredibly beautiful people with intense chemistry on screen so it was really hard for me not to ship it.

What are your favorite things about the ship?

I love how many possibilities there are about the ship. Thanks to the longevity of the show, there are so many opportunities to think of what ifs and fill in all the blanks. 

Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?

I’m not sure if I know enough popular opinion to decide what is unpopular but I personally do not hate the season 8/9 abduction arc. I’m not a huge fan of Requiem and some of the other “classic” or popular MSR episodes. I actually kind of wish Mulder were in fewer episodes in the later seasons. I also did/do not like MSR post original run, (IWTB, s10,s11).

Scully/Skinner - Don’t Ship It

Why don’t you ship it?

I am MSR endgame. I will read scully/skinner fanfic but usually if it is eventual msr. I am put off by Skinner’s infatuation with Scully and don’t find it reciprocal. However, I could be convinced into post original run Scully/Skinner now that I’m thinking about it.

What would have made you like it?

We have to get rid of the power play issue here. Skinner is a Good Man and Dana Scully needs to break her bad habits. I would totally be down for Scully/Skinner if a. Mulder wasn't in the picture. B. scully didn’t work for the fbi and he did or vice versa. C. IF Dana scully/Sharron Skinner OR d. Maggie scully/Walter Skinner (sometimes)

Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?

I do love Walter Skinner oh so very much. He and Scully could totally be happy together. He would be so good to her and scully needs some of that in her life.
