(Archive) Animated movie of the day: Atlantis The Lost Empire (2001)
Originally posted: January 7th, 2022 Ah, the Disney Renaissance. Their musicals absolutely dominated the 90's, but from Pocahontas(1995) to Tarzan(1999), their box office returns started to go down. So, the house of the mouse decided to try and shift gears, and took a gamble greenlighting some rather odball movies. None of them paid off, but this ended up giving us one of my childhood favorites and frankly an underrated film that, while flawed, still makes for a very interesting experiment.
Distancing itself from it's predecessors, this movie isn't a musical which presents a refreshing change of pace. Songs wouldn't fit in this film anyways, with it's darker tone, heavy action focus and even violent imagery. The body count is shockingly high for a Disney animated feature, and unlike a film like Mulan a lot of them happen on screen.
So, yeah, the film is more violent. And scarier too(Rourke's death is quite gruesome). It's also more visually interesting in some ways. With character designs from creator of the Hellboy comics Mike Mignola, the art direction has an edge to it that complements the action set pieces and adventurous narrative. The city of Atlantis, while decadent, is breathtaking.
What about the characters though? Well, they're really fun! While not having the most deep story arcs, all have a very strong charisma and bounce off each other humorously (my personal favorite is Vinny). Protagonist Milo may be the most plain of the bunch but he's still a likable dork. As out of focus as it is, his relationship with Kida is also charming, both of them understanding the importance of cultural exchange.
And that's the deal. This film is closer to Raider's of the Lost Ark than Beauty and the Beast. It's a death defying adventure with just enough plot and characterization to justify the action. There's still some compelling drama here, but the focus isn't the romance or the self discovery. It's the crazy, cool journey.

Absolutely love how the MASH fandom on here is just 100% in love with David Odgen Stiers as Charles Emerson Winchester III and just the actor himself, while I'm sitting here like "you are right but it took me so many episodes and some rewatches to really warm up to him"
Why you ask? Well long before I even heard about MASH, I watched North and South (1985) as a kid. And I watched it many times with my grandma (only season 1 and 2 of course) and once you know David Odgen Stiers as Representative Sam Greene it's VERY hard to not be disgusted by him the moment he steps on screen.

i hold off before on making a post about how i was convinced for some reason that frollo was a man of the church and not a judge and would you know it that reason is because he IS the archdeacon in the novel and that disney is gaslighting me by making frollo and the archdeacon of notre dame two different people + making the story make less sense because why would quasimodo live in notre dame if frollo who adopted him doesn't + now he's just insanely religious for no reason

Ive been on elsewhere but I missed posting in the one place that you think would matter most. My old Beast RP blog. I just want to honor the amazing mother of Disney’s BatB. Mrs. Pott’s aka Angela Lansbury.
She passed a few days ago.
And now all three friends of the enchanted trio are together across the rainbow bridge, now.

To me, concept Dracula looks like a 2D-animated DreamWorks character who'd have the voice of David Odgen Stiers

Kind of funny that two of the cast members in Beauty and the Beast went on to do detective shows (Angela Lansbury and Jerry Orbach). I don't think David Odgen Stiers had one (because I don't count MASH), but they all did musical theatre, I think. So they had connections.

1, 3, 4, and 10 for the MASH asks.
Hey! Sorry for not answering this sooner eep but thanks for asking!!
Favorite episode? Argh its so hard for me because there are so many good ones >< weirdly enough even though I'm a huge Charles fan both of my picks are Father Mulcahy centered. Its a dead tie between Blood Brothers and Quo Valdis, Captain Chandler
Most underrated character? So I already answered this once but I'll say in the context of the actual 4077, Klinger was really underrated and overlooked for what I thought made him truly special. When everyone thinks of Klinger they think of his dresses he wears to get his Section 8 but he really became the backbone of the 4077. As an orderly before he became company clerk, he was highly competent and never complained about his duties. His scam where he pretends to be in Toledo springs to mind- quickly coming up with a clever workaround to continue the scam while still helping those in need. He wheeled and dealed only for the benefit of others, which is where my favorite quality of his comes to play- his enormous amount of generosity! Getting that magazine for Hawkeye, bringing Christmas dinner to Charles, there are so many examples I can't even begin to count of times where Klinger puts the needs of others before his own with a smile on his face. (sorry this got rant-y but its loving Klinger hours!)
Bj or Trapper (for Hawkeye but also in general) This is actually quite simple for me. Bj for Hawkeye, Trapper in general.
Unpopular opinion? >:) I have quite a few hot takes lol. Klinger is a straight cis guy, he says on multiple occasions that the clothes are a front even when given the opportunity for a discharge on the basis that he's a transvestite. Furthermore I think the people who try to make him fit the labels of trans, gay, or genderfluid not only misunderstand his character but also has horseshoed around to just being sexist again. Men can like dresses and makeup and still be men! This is actually a common theme of my hot takes, like the fact that a lot of people headcannon Radar to be trans/ace/autistic and people hc Father Mulcahy to be ace (even though thats more of a basic misunderstanding of the vows of chastity but I digress.) I get that theres a large LGBT following of M*A*S*H and there are plenty of queer themes, but I also feel like people take their own 20th views and pre-conceived notions and apply it to characters without thinking of the consequences. I can talk wayy longer about this though so I have to cut myself of here lol.
Thanks again for the asks!!

David Odgen Stiers you’d probably recognize his voice before his face, he did a lot of voiceover work especially for Disney he was the voice of the clock in Beauty and The Beast, the villain in Pocahontas and many more. Recently I’ve started watching MASH and saw him for the first time in an onscreen role and I’m just baffled that this man wasn’t a in demand character actor in movies. He had a couple of onscreen roles in Doc Hollywood and The Accidental Tourist but that was it
Forgot to reply to this earlier but I actually do recognize his name yes and now googling him, shook! Very surprising
