David R. Ellis - The Final Destination (Final Destination 4) (2009) Oh my. The worst film in the Final Destination franchise, produced during the 3D craze this is just an unmitigated pile of crap. If there was one cool thing about previous Final Destination films it wasn't their plot or the acting but the complex set pieces and practical effects that went with them. In this case an overuse of CGI and 3D service really screws the pooch. 3D service is the way in which so many of the scenes here just have stuff jumping towards the viewer so that they would look cool in 3D. These things are often made of the worst CGI which I imagine might work in a cinema as you are wearing those crap glasses that make everything look darker and the surprise of the 3D effect might make you overlook the bad quality of the effect. Not so watching the film at home on your regular TV. The plot is again non-existent but the set pieces rely heavily on CGI effects that look really bad. The opening sequence, set in a Nascar race track, is just awful, but it does at least make you laugh. More dated and with worse effects than any other entry in the series, it's also the worst acted of the bunch. So bad. David R. Ellis - Final Destination 2 (2003) More of the same as the first one, but maybe slightly improved. This is a direct sequel so a couple of characters from the previous installment continue their story here, only now Death is trying to kill those who were saved by those who were supposed to have died at the start of the first film. If this makes little sense, it doesn't really matter. As in other installments of the series you are not watching this for plot, you are watching for overly complex and brutal death scenes that take on an even more comedic aspect in this film than in the previous one. Some of the deaths here are downright silly in their complexity or in the chaotic nature of their occurrence and I can't help but laugh out loud at some of them. One of the problems with these films is a necessary outgrowth from their intention to be gore-fests. These films can never really flesh out characters that well, it openly avoids making the viewer have any empathy for the characters. This is light entertainment after all, and if you relate to the characters you can't guffaw when they get smashed to bits. It would be tragic rather than amusing. If Roger Ebert defined cinema as a machine for empathy, these films fall somewhere outside that definition and so do most slashers frankly. So it plays kind of like a compilation of youtube fails, with the fails replaced for elaborate deaths, and it has about the same artistic value, but hey, it's still amusing.
