y'all, the internet is wild. now people do fic recs through tiktok! and here's a real person talking about while the iron's hot for two minutes! that's very sweet and very nice and it made me feel good. so. tiana asked for additional recs, and i've been revisiting some old favorites recently gearing up for daredevil: born again.

here are a few absolutely enrapturing stories that i always return to, that i haven't been able to stop thinking about, even years later:

my breath is for holding by @the-restless-brook: karen is placed in a men's prison with none other than the punisher. i was hooked as soon as i heard the premise, and it turned out to be everything that i hoped and more. frank's personal code shines brilliantly in this fic, and it's a cornerstone of kastle fandom for a reason. in death's dream kingdom by @the-restless-brook: frank and karen get the hell out of nyc following the snap. yeah, this author deserves every shred of praise she's ever received. there's deep exploration of humanity and love in every corner of this fic. i've got the mic (if you've got the mosh pit) by @sonnywortzik and @academicpunk: frank's in a hardcore punk band and karen's a music journalist. this fic lives by ideals. this fic is like grit under my fingernails. the writing is exceptional. i will be holding a torch for this fic until my body fizzles into stardust. not the same by @fortysevenswrites: maria's ghost appears to frank and gives him a piece of her mind. it's delightful and painful in the best ways, it fits these people perfectly and always packs a punch. a poignant, quick, lovely read. all hopeless with old coffee by @onebatch2batch: karen's asshole father dies, and frank goes with her to help deal with it. honestly, after we finally received her backstory in dds3, this is all i wanted to receive from canon. pining, awkward domesticity, time capsules, matt and foggy being the best versions of themselves. when you need me (call my name) by @adverbedly: lisa survives the carousel. years later, frank sees her in public, covered in scars, adopted by someone else, going by a different name. this fic makes me absolutely lose my mind. frank's longing to be her dad is so palpable, all the implications so carefully laid out. i'm obsessed.

thank you all for producing quality, thought-provoking stories that matter to you and that i get to read and return to for free. you're all really fucking talented. i love all of your franks.

Karen and Matt | DDs3

Posts like this make me sick. 🤢 Will they ever stop infantilizing Beth?She was an adult, he treated her like an equal, he also looked at her like a woman. She was his rock when he broke down. Plus there’s the whole Norman admitting Daryl had feelings for her thing. DDS3 can’t come soon enough, people like this are going to have a meltdown when they finally make it clear as day for them.

I feel it in my bones, if it was flashbacks or hallucinations, they would have alluded to it already.

They could point out that Comics Matt loves to dream and hallucinate dead loved ones, he does it all the gd time. Or even better, point to the flashbacks from DDS1 or the flashbacks and ghosts/hallucinations in DDS3. All of these are precedent for dead characters being a valuable presence in Matt Murdock's life.

The haven't done that at all. The closest was Frank asking Matt if he hears Foggy which they proceeded to do nothing with. Instead it's "without going into spoiler territory" and "gotta watch for the snipers" and "it's too much fun to spoil" and "will someone return from the dead? anything is possible".

I just don't see the benefit of jerking us around when they could manipulate us into giving them that sweet sweet OG Daredevil praise they obviously crave instead.

So I guess the Born Again writers are maintaining the Daredevil tradition of "Timeline? We don't need no steenking timeline!" Since Marvel says DDBA happens 5-7 years after DDS3 and the best timeline I can figure out puts that either square in the middle or about ten seconds after the end of the blip. However, the diner scene references events from Hawkeye, which is set firmly after the blip, and Fisk spent time recovering from that. Plus, obviously his character arc includes the events of Echo. So I guess we can assume that DDBA is at least a couple of years post-blip and is gonna pretend like it never happened. The Echo series strongly implies that neither Fisk nor Matt were blipped, but we don't know anything about the other characters.

Would it make Matt's actions in Born Again more or less believable if Foggy had just gotten back from being blipped?

When I did my 25 Days of Daredevil Countdown, there were quite a few characters it was hard to just make 2-9 gifs of. So here, have some of Dex that didn't make the final cut. He wasn't the only one, more coming soon!

Another wardrobe connection that has fascinated me: Karen wears the same blue flowered blouse in DDS2 when she tells Frank he is not a monster and in DDS3 when she confesses to Foggy that she killed James Wesley. She wants him to tell her she is a bad person, since she shot Wesley seven times because she wanted him dead.

I can’t think of another time Karen repeats an outfit, so I feel like this is an intentional choice in the show.

Karen fights for Frank to retain his humanity, always seeing him for who he is, despite what he has done, because if even he has a chance of doing some good in this world, with any hope for redemption, then maybe she can too. Otherwise, she must concede—she is a monster too.

It is endlessly frustrating as a viewer Frank never knows any of this about Karen when their connection is woven into the very fabric of her character.

I really wish it had been Frank to be the first person with whom she could talk about Wesley with. It would have made for such a powerful scene. (But shout out to Foggy for being the best goddamn friend ever and caring so much about our girl.)

Dex & Terrance’s journeys intersect at the perfect time 🩷

Terrance is a case manager in Hell’s Kitchen and best friends with the vigilante Starlet during the events of DDS3. When Dia (Starlet) admits she killed Fisk’s bestie, Dex is sent to kill Terrance but doesn’t succeed. When Fisk slams Dex into a wall and breaks his spine, Terrance is the only one willing to work with his care team to make sure he’s taken care of. He provides free case management services for Dex from afar for 3 years until he has a relapse with his schizoaffective disorder and drops the ball, allowing the opportunity for Vanessa to manipulate Dex into killing Foggy. One year later, Terrance apologizes to Dex, Dex breaks out of prison, and goes into hiding after trying to kill Fisk.

2 months later, Terrance is threatened by a Task Force member when Dex (who has been stalking him) saves him and offers to walk him home. Terrance, who thought he was dead, is overjoyed to see him again and very willingly offers to be his friend if he keeps him safe.

Terrance becomes just as obsessed with Dex as Dex is with him. It quickly develops into more than friendship but they have to keep it secret … for now 🤫

I need someone to explain how m@ttk@ren are supposedly soulmates when they have had YEARS to get together without any other love interests being in the way. Somehow they're the love of each other's life but they never once tried to be together in the gap between dds3 and ddba? The scene with Frank genuinely makes it look like Karen is only trying it with Matt because she can't have the man she really wants. Matt himself has never once seemed interested in pursuing anything romantic with Karen. Never forget that when they broke up in s2 he said he didn't regret losing her 😂 Mans was completely down bad for Elektra and Elektra only.

It's wild how these show runners continue to push their relationship as being Oh So Pure, but this is never reflected in the actual writing of the shows.

Genuinely the second they started flirting in the first episode I was like, ".......But, you've had years upon years to get together and you're... not. So, let's move on??" I don't think it gave she's only trying with Matt, because she can't have Frank -- because, they set up the flirting in the first episode. But, it definitely gives bored and settling.

I think Matt had a genuine interest in her for a flash, before they went on their date. But, the second Elektra showed up, afterwards, he was phoning in all of his interactions with Karen. Like, they're kissing and going straight to 'I guess we're telling people we're dating.' (Which was bizarre, honestly. That's your employee and you went on one date and now you're kissing her openly in front of your business partner.) But, his mind has already strayed from her and building something with her, to focus back on his feelings for Elektra. And once he strayed that focus, I simply do not buy it ever coming back? It's been 5-7 years since the end of DD and they've been in each others' lives for that entire time. So, if they'd not gotten together, by now, I simply do not buy that there's any real feelings or desires to do so.

Any push from Matt, from this point, feels like a direct response to irritation that Frank's heart started racing when he saw Karen and hers did the same when she saw, in return. It's like Matt's a dog peeing on her, to stake his claim against his frenemy, Frank.
