I'm so tired of people, on and off this website, saying "I can't understand it myself, but I support aplatonics." What's not to get? You know that feeling you have about friends or people you want to be friends with? Cool. Imagine not having it. Bam! You understand aplatonicism. Sure, the feeling is important to you, but that doesn't make "some people don't feel it" a difficult concept. It's actually really, really simple.
I'm not some alien. I am not a foreign species. I'm really not that hard to understand. If you think the idea of not having any platonic attraction to people, you need to work on your platonormativity. Big time. Not so you can be better about aplatonics and stop saying that you support us while actually treating us as alien and incomprehensible, but because odds are, one day, you'll find yourself without friends. It happens to most people sooner or later. Maybe you move to a different place where you don't know anyone. Maybe you have kids and you just don't have time to see your friends anymore. Maybe there's a falling out. Maybe you go through some transition in life and you and your friends just end up in different stages of life and don't have anything in common anymore.
Either way, one day, whether it's for a week or years, you're probably going to find yourself without any friends. It's going to be a hell of a lot easier to get through that if you've already come to understand that you have worth outside of your relationships with others, that being friendless is actually not a negative trait and doesn't mean you're a bad person, and that you can enjoy your own company and be perfectly happy by yourself.
I already know that. I'm an aplatonic who likes having social connections, even if I don't like calling them friendships anymore, but I have been in that part of life before. Yeah, talking to people is fun, but I know how to exist without it. It's like a hobby to me. Just as I love dancing but I'm doing just fine now that I don't have the opportunity to do it, I was fine without interacting with friends. The question, dear alloplatonic, is whether you'll be fine. If you truly cannot wrap your head around not having an innate desire for friends, I don't you will be. I think it's about time you buckle down and learn to understand living that way.

On some background level I am always going crazy over the fact that Flint is - somehow - both Billy's emotionally unavailable stepdad and his bastard (in every sense) brother as well as his toxic boss. Nobody ever talks about or acknowledges this (perhaps even internally). I'm not saying that doing so would've fixed anything between them but I do marvel at the batshittery of it all

These kids are not ok (Percy Jackson)
I started reading Percy Jackson because I never got to in school, and by started I mean I’m done the first five books.
Man all these kids need therapy why did no one think to get a therapist on hand for them💀 like this camp is just full of teenagers with parental issues who have also gone to WAR?! I need a fanfic but the main character is like therapist of the camp.
“So Percy about your mom, how does it make you feel?”
“Sad :(“
“I see…”

"Shadowheart," Rakha mutters. "You will take the lead."
"You said that last time," Shadowheart says, a touch coldly. "Do you mean it now?"
Rakha does not look at her, but examines the mosaic tilework on the floor with a deep scowl. "I was foolish," she says in a low voice. "I thought-- I do not know what I thought. I should not have spoken to her."
Shadowheart frowns. "No, you should not," she says. Her eyes flash. "Have you forgotten why we're here? My parents? My memory, everything they did to me? We're not here to make friends!"
"Yes," Rakha says hollowly. "I'm sorry."
Shadowheart stares at her for a second, and then her shoulders slump and she hisses a weary breath out. "Well, it's too late now. The thing's done. And I'm not sure you liked the answer, anyway."
A pause. Rakha shrugs. "I should have known it without asking," she mutters.
Wyll frowns. "What that woman said--"
Rakha rounds on him with sudden intensity. "You heard exactly what she said," she snaps. "And you know it to be true. I have a violent heart. With or without the beast."
Wyll looks back at her steadily. "I don't think I would ever describe you with just one word," he says.
This seems to give Rakha some pause, and she looks away, and her voice sounds a tad less certain when she speaks again. "I am broken--"
"You are healing," Jaheira says, the quietness of her tone not lessening its strength. "The two do not always look as different as we would wish."
"I do not want to be healing," Rakha mutters, and is somewhat ashamed to hear how petulant the words sound. "I want to be healed."
Jaheira releases a sharp bark of a laugh. "Would that it were so easy," she says, with a heavy irony that reflects a century of pain. "But no - you shall walk the same road as the rest of us, and pick out the pieces of yourself you wish to keep." Her eyes flick briefly to Wyll. "And you are one of the lucky ones, for you shall not do it alone."
Wyll nods. "Damned right," he mutters fiercely.
A long silence. Rakha says nothing, and does not move, just stares at the floor and lets the words sink through her for a long time. Then she lifts her head and looks at Shadowheart. "Let us go find your family," she says quietly. "That is what matters now."
And then she refuses to say anything else at all until Shadowheart walks ahead of her down the stairs.

Not the original anon but I really do think that a modern TSP has interesting and salient implications. I think about how Leslie Howard pushed for the making of "Pimpernel Smith" in the face of WWII. I'm not trying to start anything more than an excited conversation about how wonderfully the characters can slot into historical periods of international crisis. It's heartbreaking, but still a wonderfully timeless aspect of the story and characters: a man with means rescues political refugees while his wife is plagued with guilt for something she's done wrong in relation to those people and they are being hounded by a government official who is just trying to do his job as it quickly becomes more and more personal. It's got good bones!
Ah, now this is something I have also thought about before in passing (but very vague). Anyway, it is quite interesting to see how these characters and the roles they play fit wherever you put them in history.

Zhalia: I wasn’t created in that lab, I’m not even from that country!
Sophie: you grew up in a laboratory, therefore you are lab grown. What are the features you feel define who you are now?
Zhalia: I’m a seeker? A spy? A bit sarcastic?
Sophie: and where did those start?
Zhalia: when I-
Zhalia: oh no

me: i feel like at every library i've worked out, there's been a patron or two that are clearly struggling with alcohol but aren't quite seeking help. do you have any suggestions for that situation? speaker: well the program is voluntary. me: yeah, but i mean...what do we do in these situations? speaker: if they aren't reaching out, nothing.
#'the program is voluntary' who is suggesting i just call the cops on them omg. i'm saying.#libraries regularly have an issue where someone is spiraling out specifically due to substance use. you are HERE#to help us deal with people spiraling out due to substance use. GIVE ME SOME ACTIONABLE THINGS.#i think what's frustrating is that the professionals know just as much or even less than someone who just Has A Sick Family Member#work tag#'you can't call us just bc someone is in pyschosis' then like. what is the point of you. no genuinely.#if there is no one i can ask for help when a patron - true story - is muttering about conspiracies and picking up books that have#trigger words in the title (like angel demon gods zion etc) and keeps lifting his shirt at random patrons#to explain to them that 'she is biting him here here and here' and keeps fixating on staff and getting too close.#CLEARLY is struggling thorugh an episode but also CLEARLY isn't dangerous. i'm just supposed to let him sit there.#there's nothing to do. okay got it. so you're useless is what you're telling me#and the skills i learned growing up to handle my uncle's triggers and my own triggers are the only things you can offer.#not to be like 'i hate social workers almost as much as cops' but jfc.#sorry omg i'm just so annoyed by this whole thing. we've had two very serious mental health crises happen at work the last like six months#and the answer when i've been like 'what i'm just supposed to like stare at him the whole time?" has been 'yes.'#well that doesn't feel safe for the patron or me!#j is passing out drunk regularly!!!!!! he's not doing good!!!!!!!!!!

if youre TME and you genuinely want to be an ally to and support and protect transfems, whether theyre your loved ones or not, you have got, GOT to start being willing to recognize when someone is not engaging with a particular piece of discourse in good faith. sometimes posts about a particular topic (often sexually pathologizing in nature) will show up on your dash seemingly unprompted and while in a vacuum you may agree with it, you have to be willing to start thinking about whether this person is responding to something in the moment.
a Lot of discussions around sexual paraphilia and whether certain ideas around sexuality and kink are Morally Objectionable Or Not do not start innocuously. sometimes, if you go back enough, you will find that it is because someone discovered that a trans woman had a sexual thought that they thought was gross or bad, and decided to Ruin Her Fucking Life. and the discourse just trickled out from there until people were responding to other posts in a vacuum with no idea that they were engaging with a conversation that was started on the most bad faith of arguments
its not just discourse about sex of course. we have all GOT to be vigilant about what were putting out there and where were getting our concepts of morality and who is allowed to do what. its just that a Lot of arguments around sexual morality and kink morality are started because of transmisogyny and that is always fuel to mark trans women as Other and Deviant and Predatory.
youve got to be willing to recognize when youve fucked up. when people you care about or usually agree with have fucked up, and to hold them accountable. and you have to start trying to tell a bad faith argument apart from a good one, and know when engaging with something is just going to make things worth for some vulnerable
as many much smarter people have said before me, Disgust and Fear are not constructive emotions to be basing morality and especially Legality on. if youre immediate reaction to something you see other people engaging with positively is disgust, you have to be willing to interrogate Why you think its disgusting and whether that reaction is coming from a personal distaste or an ingrained societal idea. and you have to be willing to recognize whether something you personally dislike is harmful to outsiders or not, and if it isnt, to Walk Away.
