Coronation Music at Westminster Abbey
The Royal Family | Published 18 February 2023
Twelve newly commissioned pieces of music will be performed at The Coronation of Their Majesties The King and The Queen Consort at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May 2023, showcasing musical talent from across the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth.
A range of musical styles and performers blend tradition, heritage and ceremony with new musical voices of today, reflecting The King’s life-long love and support of music and the arts.
His Majesty The King has personally commissioned the new music and shaped and selected the musical programme for the Service.
Andrew Nethsingha, Organist and Master of the Choristers, Westminster Abbey, will be overseeing all musical arrangements and directing the music during the Service.
Sir Antonio Pappano, Music Director for the Royal Opera House, will be conducting the Coronation Orchestra which comprises a bespoke collection of musicians drawn from orchestras of The former Prince of Wales’ Patronages including the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
Six orchestral commissions, five choral commissions and one organ commission, have been specially composed for the occasion by world-renowned British composers whose work includes Classical, Sacred, Film, Television and Musical Theatre. Commissioned works include a new Coronation Anthem by Andrew Lloyd Webber, a Coronation March by Patrick Doyle, a new commission for solo organ embracing musical themes from countries across the Commonwealth by Iain Farrington plus new works by Sarah Class, Nigel Hess, Paul Mealor, Tarik O'Regan, Roxanna Panufnik, Shirley J. Thompson, Judith Weir, Roderick Williams, and Debbie Wiseman.
Soloists will include bass-baritone, Sir Bryn Terfel; soprano, Pretty Yende and baritone, Roderick Williams. The organ will be played by Sub-Organist, Westminster Abbey, Peter Holder, and Assistant Organist, Westminster Abbey, Matthew Jorysz.
The official Royal Harpist Alis Huws will perform as part of the Coronation Orchestra in recognition of The King’s long-standing and deeply held relationship and affiliation with Wales. One of the liturgical sections of the ceremony will also be performed in Welsh.
At the request of His Majesty, in tribute to his late father His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, Greek Orthodox music will also feature in the Service performed by the Byzantine Chant Ensemble.
The Service will be sung by The Choir of Westminster Abbey and The Choir of His Majesty’s Chapel Royal, St James’s Palace, together with girl choristers from the Chapel Choir of Methodist College, Belfast and from Truro Cathedral Choir. The Ascension Choir, a handpicked gospel choir will also perform as part of the Service and The King’s Scholars of Westminster School will proclaim the traditional ‘Vivat’ acclamations.
Fanfares will be played by The State Trumpeters of the Household Cavalry and The Fanfare Trumpeters of the Royal Air Force.
Sir John Eliot Gardiner will conduct The Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque soloists in a pre-Service programme of choral music. A small group of singers from The Monteverdi Choir will also join the main choral forces for the Service.
Music by the likes of William Byrd (1543–1623), George Frideric Handel (1685–1759), Sir Edward Elgar (1857–1934), Sir Henry Walford Davies (1869–1941), Sir William Walton (1902–1983), Sir Hubert Parry (1848–1918) and Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) has historically featured in the Service over the past four centuries and will be included in the programme along with the music of one of Britain’s most loved and celebrated living composers, Sir Karl Jenkins.

“The World is a Little Darker:” Mojo Nixon Dies at 66
- Singer died following a “blazing show” aboard Outlaw Country Cruise
Mojo Nixon, the brash punkabilly singer who became known as “the loon in the afternoon” on his satellite radio programs, has died.
Nixon, 66, succumbed Feb. 7 to a “cardiac event” after performing a “blazing show” aboard the Outlaw Country Cruise, said a statement from the “Elvis Is Everywhere” singer’s camp.
“How you live is how you should die,” it said. “Mojo Nixon was full-tilt, wide-open, rock-hard, root-hog corner on two wheels and on fire. Passing after a blazing show, a raging night, closing the bar, taking no prisoners and a good breakfast with bandmates and friends … is about right and that’s just how he did it.”
“Heaven help us all,” it concluded.
With occasional gigs such as OCC still part of his itinerary, Nixon had in recent years devoted much of his time to hosting radio shows on SiriusXM, where he was known as “the Loon in the Afternoon.”
Elizabeth Cook, Nixon’s “partner in crime” on Outlaw Country, eulogized her fellow deejay and musician: “He was a total maniac, a complete pain in my ass and he will be missed,” she said.
A self-described “cult artist” who specialized in novelty songs such as “Debbie Gibson is Pregnant with My Two-Headed Love Child,” “Don Henley Must Die,” “Burn Down the Malls,” “Jesus at McDonald’s,” “Stuffin’ Martha’s Muffin” and others, Nixon once said music “kept me out of prison.”
But for all the irreverent bombast in public, there was another, private side to Nixon, said his friend and collaborator Jello Biafra.
“Beneath all the redneck-wildman veneer, the Mojo I knew was a real gentleman,” the former Dead Kennedy said. “Deep, loving and empathetic as it gets, a true son of Woody Guthrie.”
“The world is a little darker” in the wake of Nixon’s death, said Steve Poltz, who called the “wiseman (and) wiseass” Nixon “my buddy, my hero, my teacher, my spiritual advisor (and) my guru” in a lengthy online remembrance.
“Mojo was a fireball and every time I saw him I always felt better,” Poltz said. “… My God, I just can’t believe he’s passed on.”

whats your favorite band/musician.
Oh man hard question to answer!
At the moment?
I would say I’m going through a real big Nina Simone moment.
But, The Amazing Devil is a regular favourite, also Debbie Wiseman’s soundtrack for Wolf Hall, and Bruce Peninsula.
Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

🎧, ❌, and 💿, please?
🎧—What would the soundtrack be like?
(See previous, but have a bonus answer:) Opening titles composed by Debbie Wiseman? (I don't recommend this show, but I could imagine the feel being a bit like the theme from BBC's "Wolf Hall.")
youtube
❌—What’s the worst thing an adaption of your WIP could do? Your absolute worst nightmare?
(See previous, but have a bonus answer:) Mmm, any choices in the adaptation that clearly were made out of insecurity rather than confidence and reason. We don't make art from a place of fear.
💿—Free space for anything I didn’t mention! Talk about things you would add, things that are important to you, or even lay out the plot of every episode of your Netflix Original if it suits you!!
Since we're talking of opening titles, I'd love for them to do that thing where the opening has shots of lots of different items, the significance of which to the plot will become clear only as you watch (my love for 90's/00's period dramas is showing...) These might include an ornate bottle of absinthe, a noose, a tin coffee cup, etc. On the other hand, the titles might be shadow-puppetry based, fireworks based, or a montage hands doing various performance-ey things - playing music, dancing, juggling, tracing the lines of a script, etc.

It looks nice. I bet my mom will love this too. But in religious stories, if Mary is the mother, then the father would be Joseph. And Jesus would be the son. Like when making a nativity scene on Christmas, we have Bonn as Joseph, Rita as Mary and Spot as Jesus.
Debby 😺📱🖥️: That looks amazing, Bonn. You and your Wife make great religious stories. Especially once Christmas comes, we can have you and your wife in it. As well as for your kids. Even Spot can be Jesus and you can be Joseph and Rita as Mary. And maybe Riya or Vanilla can be the Angel. And most importantly, we can have Maxwell, Sam and Cude as the three Wiseman. I'm sure that can be fun for you guys.

HEADCANON MEME!
‣  🎶 - What is my muse’s theme song?
“Arsène Lupin” by Debbie Wiseman, the opening theme from the horrible, not recommended to watch 2004 Arsène Lupin movie ! It’s the track on my blog’s music player, found in the top left corner if you wish to listen to it :^)
There’s also “L’arsène” by Jacques Dutronc, the ending theme to the 1971 “Arsène Lupin” TV series, a track I am only mentioning for the hilarity of the lyrics:
... L'Arsene With his infallible flair, he is irresistible L'Arsene Irresistible and sometimes invisible The beautiful, the beautiful Arsene  He's a safe breaker He's a breaker of pretty hearts The righter of all wrongs, Arsene ...
A rough translation of a section of the song, you get the idea.
‣ 🎤 - Can my muse sing? If they can sing, can they sing well and what it’s like?
Yes!! I’d like to think he naturally has a decent vocal range, it makes disguising his voice on the job a lot easier. It was also mentioned in canon that he had even once been a tenor (the highest male singing range in an opera). So yes, he can sing, the man’s got hell of a vocal chord.
Also as a very excessively dramatic person, he sometimes sings a short tune in tense moments... for the theatrics.
