As an anime only watcher of dungeon meshi (I started reading the manga today and I'm a few chapters in) I have been shaken to my core by the newest episode. This episode felt like all of the characters we have met so far were transported to a different show the shift in mood became so serious.

Let's talk about the second half which was my favourite part (though the entire episode was amazing) The twist that the golden country continues to exist was not something I even considered. That on its own was something else and though I figured out the gist of what was going on farely quickly the set up for the reveal was so well built up in that second half.

The reality of the people of the golden cities lives gradually becoming more clear in such a sombering way. It has and atmosphere of things being "perfect" with something clearly being very wrong. How that was handled, Laios reaction to the prophecy and the introduction of the elves were my favourite parts of this episode.

Regarding Laios' reaction, I loved it, it felt very realistic, subverted common tropes and also felt in character for Laios. Laios says he was nervous but honestly he looked absolutely horrified at the boys request that he takes down the magician and become king it was like it was the first time he had ever truly considered that that could happen and the weight of the people's hopes weighed on him like a ton of bricks. He felt so incredibly human.

I just can't believe how perfectly both those episode parts were pulled off at least from the perspective of someone seeing it for the first time.

I'm watching Dungeon Meshi with my dad so I'm behind (but I already read the manga so I know what happens) and we just got to the chimera Falin fight

And I know everyone kept talking about the stripping scene but my favorite shot was always

I like that Marcielle didn’t get over her prejudice for Orcs during the episode. She gained perspective sure, but I prefer the idea that it’s a long term issue she needs to grow through.

Senshi and Parenthood

I’m obsessed with Senshi’s narrative role— or lack thereof actually. He’s not there to devote himself to a cause or further the plot, I actually don’t think he knows why he’s there for 90% of the story. He just. Saw a bunch of bumbling young looking people and went “well somebody’s got to feed them.”

And meanwhile there’s. Eldritch chaos and a complex narrative centered around life death and rebirth being intrinsically tied into the concept of hunger and appetite— and Senshi is standing there with his wok like, “okay sure you’re under the thrall of your own desires puppeted by an interdimensional being how bout I make you a pie and you calm down.” And it WORKS.

It works every time because surprise surprise people do need to be fed in order to work to their goals. It reminds me of how much we take our guardians for granted. How much it means to be a parent or caretaker making meal after meal for others. What it means to nurture people so they can get up each day and fulfill their dreams.

We so often take these loved ones in our lives for granted. They’re not there to save the day. They’re there to save us. They’ll think about our needs and inclinations when no one else will.

If you’re blessed enough to have a Senshi in your life, appreciate them!! They may not be slaying the demons, but they’re the ones who got you there.

(I was promised more time. Not enough, but more than this.)

Healing hurts. Magic weaving through meat and muscle and sinew, knitting together a wound before it's ready to let go. It's beautiful and necessary. The pain. Healing hurts. Living hurts. Loving hurts. Love beats in my heart my throat my hands my staff, bleeding like a gaping wound with every forbidden word spoken and ancient symbol sketched into stone.

If you need skin, blood, lungs, then you will have them. If you need flesh and meat and beating heart, I will build you them with my two bloodied hands. I will sculpt your bones a home from the carcass of a beast, breathe life into your hearth with dragonfire.

Healing hurts.

What if I didn't care who I hurt, if it meant having you again?

I think you can understand the sentiment.

And one day soon, when you look at me in the light above and give that gentle smile, I can't help but imagine hooking my fingers between the slats of your ribs and tugging you close enough to hear your heartbeat.
