How obscure is demikids anyway actually?? Bought both of the English translated gba games and hadn’t played them.

Speaking of I found the first anime and downloaded it (shame on me for theft), but I can’t find the one that’s based off of the light and dark books, being the second set of games that were released. There’s an anime for that too and I can’t find it anywhere…or I thought there was at least…. Found the first ep on YouTube but can’t find the entire series for it…

And I thought I was good at digging around the internet to find stuff, lol.

The anime seems made for younger audiences, but it’s overall entertaining, I prefer it compared to the manga.

demikids toned down a lot of the designs for series staple demons but i cannot get over what they did to lucifer.

while above is the anime concept art this is pretty much how demon luci looks across all demikids media. i genuinely like this design but am surprised that they made it to this hard. does it beat the most commonly used demon luci design? kinda?

but he does look like some kid on deviantart’s edgy demon fanart. which is definitely a good thing because it’s just so fucking funny.

his human form also just fits that aesthetic so well. the embodiment of 2000s edgy ocs. and don’t get me started on tcg.

actually speaking of SMT let’s talk about the demikids (devil children) spin-offs. for starters demikids has always been interesting as a concept because it’s a mon taming game geared towards children released in 2000 (so it’s inspirations are pretty obvious) but what makes it interesting is that SMT as a series is literally the predecessor to the modern mon taming genre (with megami tensei for the famicom being regarded as the first game to include the mechanic of recruiting enemy monsters into the player’s party (i word it like that because for all i know there’s a secret game with that mechanic that came out before megami tensei but that probably didn’t happen)) BUT they still decided they wanted to make a more marketable one anyways.

anyways the only DemiKids titles to release internationally were the Light and Dark versions for GBA (2002). these ones are the kinds of split-versions where instead of being the same game twice but slightly different, they have completely different plots (that intertwine) and so forth. the two games also have completely different difficulties, with Dark being (very) significantly harder that Light. which is an interesting idea in a vacuum, but i imagine that the games’ marketing probably did not reflect this at all so i keep imagining tragic scenarios in which, like, a poor grandmother of the world gives some kids one of each version thinking it’s the same and the one with dark just cannot get past the games first area at all (<- happened to me). although thinking about it, at least in the US i can’t really imagine a grandma in 2002 seeing a game called “demikids” that’s all about demons jumping at the chance to buy it. anyways that’s just my demikids hypothetical scenario. also the tie-in anime for light & dark is partially lost media

@triplegirl1​ That’s fair, like my point isn’t that he’s drop dead gorgeous (bish/fem way) but he is DEF a lot better looking than the rag stain that the anime gave me. DX (P4MC/Souji is more of a handsome boy with a bit of pretty, he has a choice to go either way depending on the artist)

MM makes it work, the 3D model P5D did (predates MM) was......not so believable. The P5D model does a disservice to it his more pretty boy features:

Is it the longer hair? The outfit? The art style? Maybe it’s that his face is more round in the manga to appear more fem (aka the mangaka changed the chars face structure while they are crossdressing, not saying they did, it’s a possibility and I need to look at it later).

P3MC is also has a very pretty face, but......

What was the goal Atlus? Less than bare min? The only good thing is everything below the head tbh. Out of them all his outfit fits the best (game wise). But nothing with the hair (literally the other two MC’s wore wigs, but you’re too good???? You’re the only one not wearing a wig amongst your team!)? You know what they could’ve done, that would’ve been like....fun? Give him Hamu’s hair! Or a blue version or her hair! Hell, give him long hair I don’t care. Other chars had a wig and he doesn’t? He’s the only MC without a wig to boot!

Like, I like the maid outfit, P3′s maid outfit’s my fav (I don’t mind P4′s, P5D’s and P5R’s Sumi are ok but....I hate P5′s). But I ask......what’s the point? 

P4′s crossdressing costumes are my fav, partially because of the personality that comes from the references (Kanji for Marilyn Monroe, Yosuke for Natsuki from P3 (or at least a vague call back), P4MC for Saya from Blood (The Last Vampire ver irrc), and Teddie for Alice).... But what’s the point for P3/5?

P3: MC has the maid outfit the girl’s wear....ok?  Ken gets a Gekkou HS girl outfit, with hair reminiscent of Yukari and Toriumi....and that’s stretching is so like?? Junpei gets a cheer outfit that the girls got for P3D???? Why????? Aki’s the only one that makes sense cause at least he becomes a police officer. 

P5: MC has an outfit similar to ones that the girls got in that game (imo it fits the Last surprise MV), and Ryuji is kinda like Anne (the way they put the twin tails is just.......so bad....), but why reference Anne???? She’s in the damn game.....would’ve been more fun if it was a reference to Yukino or Lisa (or even Chie), Yusuke wins for at least referencing something of Goemon.

I think P5D did something better than P3D for once (3 to 2), but only cause I could make more sensible connections to the “why”. But even then it’s kinda....eh. 

Personally, I’d make....

P3: Makoto Y dress like Hamuko (unlike Anne, she’s not in the game, and it’d at least be tongue in cheek/a way to technically have her in the game), be it him dressed as her, or just have her be a whole ass skin (imo it should be both, the trade off is she obvie doesn’t get any alt outfits). Aki can stay as is, Junpei........I’d have him dress as Chidori or Ayase (be like the Yosuke of the group, I’m leaning towards Ayase for Magician parallels tho), Ken I’d have him dress as a demon (Alice is taken, so maybe Nekomata? Like a DemiKids/Devil Children version of a demon tho, keep it child friendly). 

P5: I’d keep Yusuke as is (he can be the Teddie, tho I’d make his outfit more like a Oni Jorou from SMT reference), I’d have Ren dress like someone from Cat’s Eye (or Catwoman, or another famous female thief, be like Yu and reference another (animated) medium), and Ryuji......man they REALLY wanted to slap pigtails on this poor bastard....either another famous person (like Marilyn Monroe, or if they REALLY want a school girl, then either Lisa/Chie/Yukino, Yukino would work with his short hair and delinquent appearance).

Does anyone have any weird video game traditions that you never really meant to be a tradition you kind of just did it and it stuck?

Here are some of mine:

I like to make snacks based on the theme of a game that I’m really hyped for (like Skyrim).

My first character in any TES game is always a female Breton. I also headcanon all my TES protags as being either related to or reincarnations of each other who keep ending up in jail for things they didn’t do.

I like to give said characters names beginning with Kyr (”Kyrael, Kyris”) yes I know what "kir” means, it’s unintentional and based off my True Name.

If an RPG has a charisma stat/something that gives me extra dialogue options I will pump points into it and get mad if it shows me a check I can’t pass.

My second characters in RPGs (especially Dragon Age and TES) tend to be white-haired pretty boys.

I almost always play a human in RPGs with different playable races with only two exceptions (I played a dokkalfar in KoA and a godlike in Pillars of Eternity).

I will almost always play a mage (or the closest thing to a mage) unless I hear that mages really, really suck or are difficult to control. Exceptions: Dragon’s Dogma (Strider), Pillars of Eternity (Cipher, sort of a roguish mage with psychic powers).

I give all my captains in Sunless Sea a name starting with “Myr” (Myriad, Myriam, Myrrh, Myrfaen).

I like to name male protagonists in JRPGs “Akira” not because of the anime, it’s the default name for the protagonist of DemiKids: Dark Version, and it just stuck with me.

I keep a mental “shit list” of enemies in open world games who have killed me in the past so I can come back and kill them when I’m twenty levels higher than them

Digital Devil Monogatari Megami Tensei (Alternate link if you wanna watch on youtube. This is an OVA for the the first Digital devil novel that the game series was based on. It precedes the games so it’s useful to watch before playing so you get a better idea of wtf is going on. Also the villain in this is Loki and, for you P4 fans, (or fans of japanese mythology) Izanagi and Izanami are a big part of the plot.)

Shin Megami Tensei: Tokyo Revelation Dub or Sub. (the dub is hilarious tho. Also youtube alternative links dub and sub) It’s an adaption of a manga and the manga itself is loosely based on SMT. Interestingly enough it has characters named Yosuke and Saki whom happen to be dating and.. well… what ends up happening with them is very similar to what happens with Yosuke and Saki in P4.

Persona 2: Innocent Sin & Eternal Punishment (This is a 5-ish minute long animated trailer for persona 2 that came as a bonus disk with the ps1 release of eternal punishment. there’s nothing more to it, just a trailer but I think it’s really neat so it’s going on here.)

Shin Megami Tensei: DeviChil (except I found an english dubbed clip ?? also the original op (op 2 is on dailymotion) and ed (and ed 2), episode 50 part 1 and 2 raw, and a clip of a scene from idk what episode but jack frost is there)

Shin Megami Tensei: Demikids (aka devil children) Light & Dark (only 1 ep is subbed. Here’s a few raw eps I found on youtube)

Persona: Trinity Soul (takes place 10 years after persona 3 in an alternate (non-canon) universe. A lot of people dislike it because it’s really different from most persona titles but I honestly think it’s quite interesting and worth the watch if you’re really into persona. It has a lot of interesting concepts, such as, the ability to summon your persona ebbing away as you grow older. Also personas being extracted from their users in a very forceful way (leading to a case of inside-out murders. as in the bodies were inside out. yeah.)

im loving persona 5 so far but i feel like it, along with p4, and many other new SMT games have set a sad trend that i hope changes some day.

under the cut, a bunch of whining about smt’s treatment of women and P5 spoilers.

why cant i play as a girl?

So far, in the entirety of the SMT series, there are three-ish games in which you do or can play as a female protag: Persona 2: EP, P3P, and SMT: IF..., and like... one of the demikids games but whatever.

I was very much hoping for this to change throughout the development of persona 5, but it didn’t. in a series so rooted in discussions of morality and social/personal issues (the persona series esp), why is it that we are so often locked into the same silent male vessel? 

why not just give us the option to change our pronouns while keeping the character model the same? the main characters are usually quite androgynous. look at Serph, Nanashi, or Aleph. games like ROM2064 and Shovel Knight are making these simple changes that make the game so much more inclusive. But putting in that little bit of extra work would go a long way. Though of course this would have to go into discussion between Japanese and American attitudes towards gender and sexual identity in media but that’s.. later. There’s also the issue of reducing the female characters to fanservice. Persona 5 has some decent commentary on how men shape the world negatively for women with Haru being forced into an arranged marriage, Makoto being pressured to work harder than necessary to have the same success as men, and especially the entire abuse story with Kamoshida, and all of these things being shown as horrid and unfair. but then there's stupid shit like the hot desert bus, and obligatory beach scene. there are also two horrendously homophobic characters, but I digress. Persona 3 and 4 also both had scenes where the boys tried to sneak a look at the girls during a hot spring trip. (Also not to mention that all of these girls im speaking of are under 18) it’s very very difficult to attempt to be any sort of socially progressive story when you’re also an anime game. not saying it hasnt been done, and i’m not saying the smt series hasnt had good commentary on many issues, but there is just.. a lot of room for improvement. this is all of course coming from my white, american background, so. grain of salt i guess. but im also a gay transwoman, and i dont think it’s asking too much to be able to express myself more in a game where the character is a blank slate. Atlus has done it before, why not do it more?

Film Idea for my screenwriting class, it's going to be an tokusatsu like Kamen Rider, ronin warrior animated action film about killer pocket monster like creatures escape from video games and it's up to a tokusatsu like knight to battle against the monsters that plaguing Japan. This is a statue like living armor like in Saint Seiya, Ronin Warriors, and Silent Knight Sho with a mixture of Kamen Rider. It's like a power up. Would pokemon ever allow fusion like there is in MegaTen?

Been playing a lot of Violet lately and remember only one instance of pokemon fusion; which was in Black 2 and White 2 with Kyurem becoming Black Kyurem or White Kyurem depending on which legendary he was fused with. But that was for the plot one time.

What would happen if you incorporated fusion in with pokemon games?

Fuse the same pokemon species together they get stronger? Could you fuse legendaries in that case?

Of course pokemon is its own thing but I think its fun to think about. Tho wasn't that what the Devil Children games were about actually? Not pokemon necessarily but getting kids into the Megami Tensei series?

Just thinking. Or like my shiny hunting in pokemon; do shiny demons in MegaTen exist? I mean probably not but it'd be cool, lol.

More imaginings, lol. what if all the MegaTen main characters were isekai'd to the pokemon world and had to make teams of pokemon instead of demons? What would they all use? Or would they all just try to get back to their own world?

Ditto for pokemon trainers suddenly isekai'd to some SMT universe. Could they get used to the demon negotiation? What teams of demons would the main characters of the pokemon games have?

This post was just about pokemon fusion but snowballed into potential AU territory. lol.

Thinking about it even though it's more science based than the occult, isn't ditto and mewtwo examples of pokemon fusion too to some degree? idk.

Seeing that tagged thumbs up Jack Frost makes me wonder when will Altus finally put the effect to create a model of the older King Frost design that I prefer much (I personally despise Demikids and any influence it brought to the rest of the series)? Also which King Frost do you personally prefer?

Oh, this guy is way better. But a whole torus of Jack clones to mesh/animate sounds like a nightmare. I'm sure it COULD be done with some workarounds and cuts to the Jack roster but would still err on the side of "unlikely."

King Frost is great regardless because he's early mid-level and is usually given decently high-tier skills that are easy to mutate into broken shit like Repels or top rank elemental magic.
