Headcanons: How TF2 Mercs act when they're crushing on Merc!Reader

Scout:

You thought this man was awkward before? Whoo boy, wait until you add a romantic interest into the mix.

Anytime Scout begins to crush on someone, he is absolutely clueless.

He'll say the weirdest things in a pitiful but sweet attempt to woo a possible love interest.

If you happen to catch his eye, be prepared for a lot of cheesy flirting and showing off.

Scout would do almost anything to get your attention, even if he ends up embarrassing himself.

When you start to laugh at all his antics, he'll throw a smile in your direction, feeling overjoyed that his plan to win your heart is starting to work.

Soldier:

Like anything else in his life, Soldier treats a crush like a military operation he must push through to get to his goal.

He won't change his personality much, but you can tell that he's gentler with you than he is with most other people.

Solider will offer his assistance with any task you might need help with, even if he's in the middle of helping one of the other mercs.

If you really wanted to, he'd let you try his rocket launcher, even if deep down he's extremely anxious about doing so.

He would put his helmet on you though, he doesn't want to see you get hurt.

Soldier is still kind of crazy around you, but it's a different kind of crazy, one that drives him to make you happy.

Spy:

As soon as Spy realizes he's caught feelings, he's turning the charm up to 11.

You'll find small gifts and trinkets for you sprinkled all over base, put in place by an invisible Spy.

And in front of the others, you can expect to find him close to you, flirting with you by subtly whispering compliments in you ear.

When he has to leave you, Spy will suavely grab you hand and leave a soft kiss on top.

He rarely, if ever, shows any outwardly sign of his actions affecting his own self at all.

But if you look very carefully, you can see a twinge of red hiding just behind his mask as he smirks at you.

Engineer:

Ever the picture of a southern gentleman, once Engie figures out he's got feelings for you, he feels obligated to properly court you.

He'll begin by asking you on a date- preparing a sweet picnic just outside of Teufort.

Once you arrive, he'll give you your favorite flowers in a cute little mason jar, along with a cute little card wrapped with a ribbon.

If the date goes well, he'll be at your humble service around the base.

Need something fixed? Engineer's on it! Lost something important to you? He's helping you search for it! Need a hug? His arms are wide open!

He just really likes you and wants to treat you with all of the love and respect you deserve.

Medic:

Medic can act one of two ways when he develops a crush on you.

The first is denial filled apathy. When he's around you, He'll act like he does around anyone else, albeit with the slight fluttering of butterflies deep in the pit of his stomach.

In this scenario, Medic would still be the same ol' mad doctor, but he is far softer with you than anyone else he encounters, even if it is subconciously.

But in the other case, he would be head over heels in love with you, in his own slightly obsessive special way.

He'd tell you all kinds of interesting medical facts and try find ways to show off his many accomplishments as a doctor.

And if you ever become lonely without him, he'd send Archimedes to keep you company. At the end of the day, Medic only wants to keep you happy and healthy.

Demoman:

If Demo ever develops a crush on you, he becomes much more clingy and affectionate than you've ever seen him be.

When he wants your attention, he'll trot over to wherever you are and start flirting with a smirk plastered on his face.

Despite his dislike for good ol' Nessie, he'd find you a cute little plush of her to keep in your bedroom to remind you of him.

If you're feeling up to it, Demo would offer to share his scotch with you, disguising it as a fun little drinking competition between the two of you.

He knows how loud he can be, so if you happen to be bothered by his volume, he's sure to quiet down a few notches when you're in his vicinity.

Demo might be abrasive at times, but deep down, he's got a soft spot for you in his heart.

Heavy:

Heavy is such a sweetheart when he's got a crush.

He'll keep an eye on you when on a mission, always prepared to use Sasha at any time so that he knows you're safe and sound.

And when you run out of energy, he's offering you part of his sandwich to help you regain some.

Heavy will sometimes go on friendly outings with you, intimidating anyone who may mean to do you harm by acting almost like a guard dog.

If he ever sees you struggling to reach something that's just too high, he's right there to lift you onto his shoulders so you can finally grab it.

Heavy can be a little much at times, but he really enjoys being able to help you just for a chance to see you smile in his direction.

Sniper:

Sniper is the same grump he always is when he's got feelings for someone, but he's still very visibly enamored with them.

If you happen to glance his way when he's admiring you from afar, his face will grow beet red and he'll cover his face with this hat.

Anytime you have a free day around Teufort, he's inviting you to play card games in his van while you two listen to soft music coming from the radio.

If Sniper notices that someone is following you while fighting the other team, he's sure to gun them down before they can reach you, much to your relief.

Although he has spent many days underneath the harsh rays of the sun, he's always sure to make sure you have some kind of protection from it.

He may act nonchalant when you ask him how to teach you how to shoot his rifle, but the proximity has him screaming on the inside. The man has no idea how to handle it, though he can't find it in himself to mind.

Pyro:

Pyro literally doesn't change when he's got a crush, but he's always been affectionate with you so it's no different than how he acts when he's in love.

A/N: Honestly, writing this brought me to tears, because it reminded me of my coworker whom I lost some time ago (his death was somewhat expected but still sudden). But I wanted to do it anyway, and it made me feel a little better :')

SCOUT

For someone who looks so headstrong, Jeremy seems like he handles grief very poorly (i.e. lashing out, acting and saying things without thinking, etc.)

This boy would probably be in one of the worst mental states of his life.

He may even ask Medic to try saving you, even if you're beyond help.

But he knows he has to prepare for life without you.

He'd still want to keep you with him at all times, even after your passing; if you decided to be cremated, he'd want your ashes in a special dog tag necklace.

He'd visit you every single day in the hospital/hospice, telling you silly jokes and bringing you snacks/plush toys. Hell, he'd still visit you, even after you've been laid to rest.

SOLDIER

With all of the time he's spent in the war(s), Jane has lost quite a lot of close comrades. He's desensitized himself to it all so he doesn't get overcome with grief.

He knows that death is an inevitable part of life, so he tries to live each day with no regrets.

And he'll try to instill that mindset in you as well.

Jane will do his best to make you as comfortable as possible, though it's extremely difficult given the circumstances.

Hand holding, soft forehead kisses or pretty much any kind of physical affection is a must.

But he'll finally break down once you actually pass, but his tears won't be of just grief. They're tears of relief, knowing you don't have to suffer anymore.

PYRO

It will take some time before they accept you'll be gone soon.

It's almost as if they're already experiencing that first stage of grief (denial).

Pyroland won't ever be the same once the dust settles.

They'll be clingy for sure, not leaving you out of their sight if they can help it.

You don't have the heart to tell Pyro you need a little space.

And it's better that you don't; they feel crushed already as it is, and you don't want to kick them while they're down.

Let Pyro smother you as much as they want, and give them all the attention you can.

DEMOMAN

This man's coping mechanisms vary.

On one hand, he'll spend as much time with you as he can, talking with you for hours.

But he may also seclude himself in his room and drink the stress away.

Random crying spells will occur on and off, in the weeks leading to your death.

He'd definitely go on drunken rants as well.

Tavish will initially want to avoid the reality, but the team will convince him otherwise.

Constant reassurance from you is the best thing you can do for him at this point.

HEAVY

Mikhail would have little to no reaction upon learning the news of your illness...at first.

He looks like he'd have it all together when with the rest of the team.

But once you're actually gone, he just breaks down and is inconsolable.

Quiet cries, burying his face in his hands, he just couldn't hold it together at your wake/funeral.

Mikhail will vent out his feelings to Medic, as he's the one person he respects the most. He may also try to ask him to bring you back.

But in the meantime, try to talk to him as often as you can.

As much as this guy likes his alone time, just try and break some of those walls down.

ENGINEER

Dell would have the same reaction as Heavy, though he wouldn't shed as many tears.

This man is one of the more sensible mercs on the team, so he'd try to be realistic about dealing with grief.

But that doesn't take the pain away.

He's obviously devastated, but chooses not to show it.

You know he's hurting, so just try to hold him and tell him everything will eventually be alright.

But don't ramble on; just you being next to him is more than enough.

MEDIC

Oh lord.

Where do I even start?

Herbert is practically the most emotionally unstable man on the team.

He'd definitely be stuck in denial, like brainwashing himself into believing you're not dying.

Despite how much everyone tries to get through to him, he acts very pigheaded and shuts down anyone.

He needs a serious reality check, and the only one who's capable of that is Heavy.

Once it finally sinks in, he just falls apart; sobbing, throwing equipment, etc.

Don't be shocked if he trashes his whole lab.

You're the only one who's able to calm him down.

Don't leave him alone for a second.

SNIPER

Mundy is almost as emotionless as they come.

...or at least that's how others perceive him.

Don't expect much of a reaction out of him, as disappointing as that sounds.

After everything passes, he'd try to go on with his daily life.

But once he's alone in his watchtower, his walls will finally crumble.

He can cry as much as he needs to in that space, because he knows no one can see him.

It's impressive how well he can hide his grief.

Just give him some time to be alone with his thoughts, and he'll come around on his own.

SPY

As the (unofficial) leader of the team, Spy feels as if he needs to set an example for everyone.

Death is a part of life, and time waits for no one.

He's pretty much in that final stage of grief almost immediately.

But just because he shows a lack of emotion, don't believe he doesn't care.

He's sad, don't get me wrong.

More than likely, he'd seclude himself in his smoking room.

Try to visit him whenever you're able to; it makes the situation less depressing for him.

I'm writing this as tiredness that is linked to stress because that's how I experience my chronic fatigue.(Think like: whenever under stress/having to experience a big emotions, I get tired and space out)

Support Classes With A Chronically Eepi Boyfriend!

Medic

This man has the SOFTEST TITS. They're PLUSH. They're GRABBABLE. Top tier pillow fr and he knows it. If you start to space out, he'll just move you gently to his chest to help you nap.

If you're spacing out or avoiding deadlines though, he'll try to snap you out of it with coffee, tea, or (hesitantly) an energy drink. He won't be mean about the way he talks to you, but he'd be sternly loving.

Loves finding you asleep in his bed. PLEASE.

Will 100% pick you up and put you somewhere comfortable. Like you fall asleep at his desk??? Boom. You're on the couch. Spacing out in the rec room??? Already in his bed and cuddling.

Spy

He gets a little annoyed that stress makes you disconnect, but that is more a stress management difference rather than contempt. (sleeping is a hell of a lot more healthy than smoking, he'll admit though.)

Likes kissing the top of your head when he finds you sleeping. It's a reward for finding you!

Doesn't like then the other mercs offer to help you that much because he's a bit too possessive. Yeah, they don't know you two are dating, but Demoman carrying you to the couch lights a flame on him he can't quite quench.

Acts annoyed when you wake up/zone back in but 100% takes care of you. Gets you water, headache meds, anything you could ever need.

Sniper

Just sorta goes along with it. Doesn't even realize there is an issue until you apologize for constantly spacing out or sleeping when stressed. Just like "Oh i thought you were done talking and just wanted to be silent."

10000% cuddles you and naps with you, enabler ass fr. He doesn't mind because a sleepy boyfriend is usually a warm and cuddly boyfriend. Also, if you pass out on a job, he can assure that you are safe.

Uses you as a hatrack I'm sorry-

Is a bit of a joker if you two are alone. If you're spaced our he'll mime out booting you back on, reloading you, ringing your brain to put you on the line, etc. When you come back to reality, you'll usually find him in mid-gesture.

Scout

Scout acts like he isn't afraid of needles himself and says they're not that bad, but in reality he has a fear of them too. So, he isn't too confused about his S/o's phobia.

Distracts his S/o by doing tricks and small stunts to get their mind off of the fact that they're getting a shot. Even if it rarely works or doesn't work at all, Scout doesn't give up on his S/o.

If they freak out, Scout freaks out too and there's not a chance either of them calm down. After a single appointment, Scout completely understands just how much his S/o is freaked out by needles. Also, they both go out to get something to eat to put the appointment behind them.

Soldier

Doesn't really understand why his S/o is so afraid of needles, like, not at all. He's seen and experienced way worse than a single, little prick to the skin and he doesn't understand what his S/o finds so scary in it.

Even if Soldier doesn't understand their fear, he still comes to appointments at their request. While he remains non-bothered, his S/o internally worries.

When Soldier actually sees how afraid his S/o is and how they cling to him for dear life, he goes wild and throws away and destroys all needles on sight.

Pyro

Is afraid of needles too, though not as much as their S/o. Pyro doesn't completely freak out, they're just a bit nervous. So when their S/o tells them they have a phobia of needles, they feel very sympathetic.

They try gifting their S/o a plush toy they can hold while getting a shot, maybe something to squeeze or pet while trying to stay calm. Sometimes that plush can be Pyro! They're more than happy to see their S/o overcome their anxiety even a little bit for the better good.

Pyro even tries to motivate their S/o by sucking up their own fear of getting shots and try to show that it's not so bad. Doesn't matter if it actually encourages their S/o or not, they're not forcing them to at all.

Demoman

Not a big fan of needles either. Though it's just a feeling of uneasy-ness and he shies away from the doctor if he needs to get a shot. So, he understands his S/o's fear of needles.

Demo might try to reason with the doctor if there's any way for him to hold his S/o still as they get their shot. It's all for their better health, even though he does feel a bit bad about restraining his S/o.

Demo praises his S/o and lets them know how proud he is of them after an appointment. All he wants to see is his S/o trying to live peacefully with their phobia and even overcome it a tiny bit, so he'll make sure he helps them in that journey.

Heavy

A big, tough man like him can't understand why his S/o is scared of needles which are just quick little pokes in their skin to make them feel better.

Heavy has to hold his S/o in a bear hug every time they go to a doctor's or Medic's office, mainly to catch them if they faint and to hold them still if a fight response gets triggered. They're clinging onto him like their life depends on it.

If his S/o freaks out, Heavy tries to keep them still with his strength, but secretly feels guilty about it. To try to calm them down to endure the prick to their skin, he speaks to them in Russian in a comforting voice to divert their attention.

Engineer

It takes a little while for Engineer to understand his S/o's fear of needles because he's a practical man, but he gets there.

He tries to reason with his S/o, trying to tell them that it's just to make them feel better but he eventually understands it's something more than just a fear.

If he's allowed, he'll hold his S/o's hand to keep them calm when they get a shot. Engie really only understands how bad his S/o's phobia is when he has to handle them as they're hyperventilating and panicking.

Medic

He doesn't know why his S/o freezes up and doesn't respond to him when they stumble into his lab. He stares at them in confusion before realizing what he has on a stool right next to him.

Medic scurries to hide them in a cabinet and welcomes his S/o in. If they've gone into a panicked state, he tries his best to calm them down

If his S/o wants to spend time with him but he's performing a surgery and needs to use a needle, he motions with his hand for his S/o to look away. Though they can still get a bit nervous.

Overall, it's made him dapper up his lab for his S/o to not freak out. Maybe he understands and doesn't understand his S/o's fear of needles at the same time because "It's just a little prick", but he tries, that's what matters.

Sniper

Sniper kind of understands his S/o's fear of needles because he's not the biggest fan of them either. Not to the point of being terrified but more like a slightly displeased feeling of when he needs a shot.

Will come to his S/o's appointments just to make them feel more safe. Sniper can only pull them closer to himself when they grip his forearm.

Awkwardly fumbles when his S/o actually freaks out and tries to calm them down by soothing them and petting their scalp. If he needs to, he will hold his S/o so they can get their shot.

Spy

Spy mostly understands why they're afraid, he's sort of the most understanding too, because he knows phobias can't easy to overcome and can't be controlled at times.

Promises his S/o to give them something nice like chocolates and stuff after an appointment. Basically, if his S/o tries to overcome their anxiety, even if it's just them shaking but not completely freaking out, he congratulates them and praises them that they tried to do something about their phobia.

If his S/o starts to panic because they've been exposed to needles, Spy will be quick to react and will try to calm them down the best way he can. He mainly talks French to them in a soothing voice to try to calm them down and reason with them.
