Decided to take a route down the physiological side of fears.

I wrote down notes on what i wanted to research and what sort of questions i wanted to ask on the information i wanted to gain.

These images are my notes and research i wanted to do and the research i done into a man named Mr Orval Hobart Mowrer, he created a theory in 1939, about the Phycology behind fears and phobias and how its based on overthinking {majority of the time}.

The next two images are images i got from a close friend whos studying Phycology and has done for 3 years now, she told me about an essay she had to write on fears and phobias and Mr Mowrer's theory was a often used as example and research basis and is known as as 'famous explanation' for fears/phobias {image 3} . and a grid created to categorize different thought process', Phobias being one of them.

His response interested me as he proved my point of fears being purley thought process based and not an actual 'event' happening to that person {although alot of fears can be produced from traumatic experiences}. 'its not whats about being alone in the dark its about not being alone in the dark, which can link to traumatic experience, some people may be afraid of the dark but only when they are outside their house, a safe place. Attacks do happen , its evil and it does happen more commonly at night, in the dark,Therefore inducing peoples fear of the dark, more so what COULD happen in the dark not the dark itself .

From poll 1 i found that 50% of people who took part in the poll where scared of the dark{nyctophobia} 33% where scared of going to the dentist{dentophobia} and 17% where scared of flying in and airplane {aerophobia}.

From poll 2 i found that, 55% of people who took part where scared of heights {acrophobia}, 36% of people where afraid of spiders {Arachnophobia} 10% where afraid of small spaces {claustrophobia}

Dr. Memnia Theodorou : First and only Cypriot to have sailed from the UK to Australia as part of Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

In need of a break from her career as a dentist and needing to go on an adventure, Memnia signed up to take part in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Memnia only had limited sailing knowledge prior to the race and had never been out at sea for more than a few hours. For that reason she had originally only signed up for the first leg of the race, crossing the Atlantic, travelling from London to Rio de Janeiro (28 day at sea). 

During the crossing, she fell in love with the sport and the sea, so she carried on signing up for more legs. She continued sailing through some of the most treacherous weather systems and isolated areas of the planet, facing not only the extremes of weather, from boiling to freezing temperatures, but also life threatening situations. She sailed to Cape Town, Albany, Sydney, Hobart, till she reached her final destination, Airlie Beach, Australia - 5 months later. She has covered more than 18,000 Nautical Miles in total, becoming the first and only Cypriot to have sailed from the UK to Australia on a racing sailing boat. 

Today, Memnia splits her time between England and Cyprus, combining dentistry with her love of adventurous activities, including sailing, scuba diving, trekking etc. She has been invited on various stages to share her story, including TEDxNicosia and has evolved as a motivational speaker and workshop trainer, inspiring others through her unique experience to go after their dreams and to reconsider their own lives. She has just completed an all-female expedition (Led by Felicity Aston) trekking on iced river in the remote Zanskar Valley, in Jammu and Kashmir.

Good to the Last Drop: NOVA’s Daily Grind

Tucked away in our collections is a small object that caused a lot of hype in the early 1900s. While the Merchant women did not write about their coffee acquisition (that we know of), they presumably enjoyed this newer tech as they could grind and enjoy a cup of coffee at home. Charter member Nancy West remembers Anne and Violet sitting on the porch talking and perhaps their fabulous coffee grinder was nearby.

The Merchant’s charming coffee grinder harkens back to the early origins of the coffee mill starting with Englishman Nicholas Book. His invention, specifically designed to grind coffee, appeared in the 17th century. Mortar and pestle along with spice grinders served this need before although not quite satisfactory. People immediately refined the early coffee mill and coffee grinders quickly evolved. Richard Dearman received a patent for his English grinder in 1789 with the first American patented coffee grinder going to Thomas Bruff, Sr. in 1798. This dentist and inventor even wrote to Thomas Jefferson regarding his numerous inventions, “Exclusive of the machine I am most anxious about, I have brought to perfection the patent tooth instruments, and others; a coffee mill, that grinds a pound in 4 & ½ minutes the spoon machine, that produces from a flat bar, a spoon, ready for the punch, in 12 seconds: fixings for bed steads, to superceed the necessity of screwing them and lacing the sacking: I have modeld here, a machine for treading wheat, cheap and simple, avoiding the fault of those lately patented…” Eventually, the American company Hobart manufactured the first electrical coffee grinder in the early 1900s, introducing a new design, which trended towards our modern grinders.

Coffee was already a popular drink by the time the Merchants grinded and brewed their daily fix. War helped boost its’ popularity in America, first during the Revolutionary War but more significantly during the Civil War when soldiers craved the taste and caffeine. While Union soldiers received 36 pounds of coffee per year as part of their rations, Confederate soldiers supply dwindled and became non-existent. Civil War folklore perpetuates a tale of Confederate soldiers sending small, crafted sailboats to Union soldiers across the Rappahannock River asking for an exchange of the precious beans with the Southern usual – tobacco. In 1864, John and Charles Arbuckle sold pre-roasted coffee in paper bags by the pound. In 1872, James Folger purchased The Pioneer Steam Coffee and Spice Mills renaming it J.A. Folger & Co. Another famous purveyor of coffee in the 20th century, started when Joel Cheek and Roger Smith created a new blend of coffee eventually selling it to The Maxwell House Hotel in Tennessee. Supposedly, Theodore Roosevelt stated, “Good to the Last Drop!” after drinking it at said hotel, and while the validity of this folklore is questionable, the slogan and promotional media seized and spread the famous line.

The Merchants could purchase coffee by the pound at different grocers and suppliers in Prince William County. While we do not have their store receipts (receipts are fantastic!), we can check to see what stores sold coffee during the years of Merchant ownership. In 1852, the Elias E. Conner General Store and Ordinary sold everything from ammo, corn meal, and farm implements to teas and coffee. This store boasted a variety of names including Kincheloe, French, and Davis, but was a popular place. Around 1911, Evans & Hensley in Buckland advertised Arbuckle coffee at 20 cents a pound along with the “best fat meat”. In 1932 in Manassas, Home Town Food Store advertised coffee at 21 cents a pound along with ice cream and popsicles (yummy). From 1890-1921, the Merchants could have purchased “selected teas & coffee” for daily use and special occasions at the Hulfish & Clarkson General Store in Haymarket. Loose coffee was 17 cents in 1917 at C.R. Kelly in Manassas with the unsettling claim, “The store you will eventually like. Come in and be convinced.” By 1951, Manassas boasted the Manassas Coffee Shop formerly a restaurant known as “The Grill”. Nokesville Supply Company sold Santos coffee at 22 cents a pound in 1938 along with John Deere Tractors. Ralph B. Berry owned Ralph’s Coffee Shop in 1949 in nearby Triangle. Of course, this is not an entire list of all suppliers and businesses, but it does show the numerous shops and services offered to the community. Depressing Fact: The average cost of coffee per pound in 2021 is $2.31 but can go much higher depending upon the supplier/provider.

Curious about what coffee pot accompanied the coffee grinder in the early 1900s? American James Nason filed a patent for a coffee percolator in 1865 with Hanson Goodrich refining it to a stovetop percolator in 1869. By the late 1800s, espresso machines came into existence and by 1908, German entrepreneur Melitta Bentz introduced the first coffee maker using blotting paper filters to help correct the overbrewing and often bitter coffee produced from the percolator. By 1954, the first electric drip maker appeared and in 1972, the electric drip maker became popular in America thanks to Mr. Coffee, effectively replacing the still used percolator.

Into the Wilderness: Tasmania on a Budget

Wondering what to do in Tasmania on a budget? Read on! If you’re like me, when you hear the word Tasmania, you probably had a mental image a beloved cartoon character pop into your mind’s eye. However, this island state off the coast of Australia is anything but looney! In fact, to many travelers, Tasmania remains a mysterious destination that is not often considered when making travel plans. For this reason, my wife and I decided to add this hidden treasure to our itinerary. What we discovered was an untamed wilderness filled with magnificent sights, wildlife, and adventure! Our travels started in Hobart, the small capital city of the Tasmanian state. While we stayed in the central part of town, it was easy enough to walk around to nearly all points of interest in town on the first day. However, our plan was to use the city as a base for exploring surrounding areas, such as Bruny Island, Port Arthur, Mt. Field, and Freycinet National Park. Staying in the center of town was also convenient to catch day tours to our selected destinations. Starting fresh on day two, we arranged a private tour of Bruny Island with Personalized Tours Tasmania. The owner/operator, Philip, knew all of the great spots for us to take scenic photos and enjoy the best tastes the island has to offer. We started off by going to the Neck, aptly named for its narrow division of two bodies of water, and home to a penguin rookery. Views from both the beach and the top viewing platform were stunning to say the least. We journeyed on to the lighthouse for sweeping views of dramatic cliffs and beaches before heading to a boutique winery for lunch. Bruny Island is well known for its boutique wineries, cheeses, seafood, and honey – the Bruny Island Premium Wines vineyard did not disappoint. We hit a few more stops around the island, including a chocolate shop (owned by a dentist!) and the Bruny Island Honey store. I should also note that many of the items sold at these boutiques are uniquely Tasmanian and cannot be found anywhere else.

After a leisurely day on Bruny Island, we were ready to dive into the wilderness! As such, we took a day tour to Mt. Field National Park, part of the UNESCO listed Tasmanian Wilderness. Here we started with an easy hiking trail through the Tall Trees to Horseshoe and Russell Falls. Throughout the hike, we were surrounded by trees measuring 50, 60, even 70+ meters in height, the largest of which was taller than a 10-story building! Though the scenery of the first trail was beautiful, the views on our second hike around Lake Dobson were beyond impressive. The area had a recent snowfall and roads up to the lake were just opened that same morning. Thus, we forged a trail through knee-deep snow to discover a silvery-white blanketed forest on a partially frozen lake – cold, but worth every minute!

Leaving Mt. Field to return to Hobart, we made one additional stop at Mt. Wellington, the monolithic backdrop towering over the city. Similar to Lake Dobson, heavy snowfall the week prior to our arrival was still clearly evident on the summit. With a lack of trees atop the mountain, strong chilly winds deterred many from exploring the sweeping views of the city – to their disadvantage. However, not being unnerved by the weather, we set off to capture excellent views of Hobart as sunset quickly approached. Starting fresh on day four, we sought slightly warmer weather at Port Arthur, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the first establishments on Tasmania. Like Sydney, Tasmania was established as an English penal colony during the late 18th century. Ahead of its time, Port Arthur was established as one of the world’s first high security penitentiaries. Surprisingly, at one point, the local government of Hobart (then Hobart Town) offered free passage to Port Arthur to local residents in an effort to show convicts the comforts they were missing. Essentially, the government aimed to have convicts “come to their senses” and repent to lighten their sentence as many convicts were political prisons. Today, the site is well preserved for visitors, sporting many of the ruins from the original buildings which can be toured independently or with a group. There are also two cafes on site – if you feel peckish, like seafood and want to try a Tasmanian dish, ask for a curried scallop pie.

Before heading back to Hobart, be sure to stop at the Tasmanian Conservation Park – the UnZoo – to check out native fauna. Here you can get firsthand experience feeding wallabies and pademelons, as well as spot the famous Tasmanian Devils. We chose to take a guided tour through the park to also learn about the conservation efforts of Tassie Devils currently endangered by a deadly cancer. While you’re roaming around, don’t forget that you are in the UnZoo – wild birds and other animals may be closer than you think! Continuing our journey the following day, we left Hobart for Launceston via Freycinet National Park. To reach the national park, we ventured along the Great Eastern Drive passing through picturesque farmland and coastal scenery. Once we entered the park, it was just a short drive to the trailhead for Wineglass Bay. However, the hike up to the lookout was a moderate one, but worth every step as sweeping views were around every bend. While the lookout provided excellent views of Wineglass Bay, we choose to take the road less traveled down to the beach itself – a challenging hike to say the least. However, once at the waterside, it was easy to see why Wineglass Bay is ranked as one of the world’s best beaches due to its untouched, natural beauty. After hiking back to the trailhead, and working up an appetite, we stopped at the Pondering Frog Café just a few minutes down the road from the park. Our final outing in Tassie was to Cradle Mountain from Launceston to see another section of the UNESCO-listed Tasmanian Wilderness. The roads were cleared of recent snowfall just days prior, but the abundance of snow was still clearly evidenced with some sections of the trail covered in ice. Coupled with the constantly changing weather patterns, the “easy” 1.5 hour trail around Dove Lake took just over 2 hours to complete. However, we had some great views around the lake, including a view of a full rainbow surrounded by ice covered mountains!

While heading out of the national park, we spotted a young wombat grazing where the snow had melted. These native Australian creatures have a keen sense of hearing and smell – and are extremely fast. With the ability to outrun an Olympic runner, the only way to approach wombats is from directly in front of them – slowly. After encountering this particular wombat and coming within a meter or so, we headed out of the national park towards the Ashgrove Cheese Farm for some of the best cheese in Tassie. Traveling through Tasmania, you can’t help but to appreciate the majestic beauty of nature. The raw, untouched wilderness was truly unique from many other parts of the world and absolutely worth a visit. If Tassie is on your travel wishlist, plan at least a week to discover its breathtaking scenery and unique flavors.
