The cactus studied Peril without judgment. That was nice of it. It looked very stately sitting there, despite how fluffy it looked. The desert wasn't too bad, the texture of sand familiar and the sky so open she felt like she could fly forever.

"You aren't going to find me by talking to a plant."

Peril jumped, then yelped; her snout bumped into the cactus—it was not as fluffy as it looked—the spines caught fire—

The fire was gone as quickly as it arrived, the cactus unperturbed beyond a patch of missing fluff. Peril raised her head, feeling not nearly as as dignified. "I'm starting to think you have an unfair advantage."

Glory snorted, her voice towards the right, Peril came up empty as she scanned the dunes. "You did well when you were hiding!"

"Burrowing under sand is the worst experience I've had in my life."

The cactus suddenly seemed a lot more judgmental.

"After the murdering, I guess."

"After the murdering," Glory affirmed, but she broke down into giggles a moment later, a tremor that shook her frame just enough to mess up the camouflage. Peril spotted the fluctuating landscape immediately, triumphant.

"Aha! There you are."

Orange eyes blinked out of thin air at her, narrowed. "Oh you planned this."

Peril grinned. "I would never."

Winter wants to try a Sandwing delicacy, Qibli doubts he’ll like the crunchy spicy treat.

A setting desert sun casts a warm glow upon a soft blue Icewing and dusty yellow Sandwing. Qibli offers a sand-roasted fire toad to Winter who courageously moves to eat it.

“Again-if you don’t like it just spit it out.” Qibli says with an admiring smile.

Winter acts grumbly and uncaring, but really he wants to embrace Qibli’s traditions and foods as his own. Even if they’re bizarre or unfamiliar, he loves the smile Qibli gives him each time he does. Qibli realizes this, and a deep fondness fills his chest. Wings brush and smiles soften.

I think sandwings would be skilled at astronomy and shit bc iirc (correct me if I'm wrong bc i haven't read these books in a while) some of them seem to be nomadic, or at the very least there're large distances to travel in between oasis and towns, so using the stars and night sky for navigation would probably be a valuable skill in the desert

Cottonmouth and Thistle exploring the rainforest~.*•

Thistle grew up in the rainforest, so he knows whats up, Cotton though? They are here for the first time and are absolutely delighted by how much stuff there is in the jungle (especially compared to the desert where they grew up)

Another old sketch page - this time with Morticians' adopted kids, Crimson and Salamander. As I mentioned before, Crimson grew up with the team, but Sal joined them very resently, and the reason is... pretty similar, actually

Although the context seems to be way sinister when it comes to the gang's involvement with her "recruitment"

Also fun fact! The ring on Crimson's right horn is a little trinket from the time he spent with the Center

Something completely inconsequential but mildly annoying about arc 3 so far is glass being a Pantalan invention, like I can understand mass produced, cheap, high quality glass for like prescription lenses etc being a Pantalan thing, but like surely at some point some Sandwings accidentally breathed fire onto some sand and figured out a basic method of glass production

Weird thing that I just realized ticks me off about WOFs worldbuilding is that we don’t get an impression of what the biome and climate of the OG Nightwing kingdom. Like it’s detailed as having a lot “a lot of canyons and caves” and it seems like it is at least wet enough that trees can grow there, but its mentioned in the wiki that the forests are artificially planted. I had always assumed that the area was at least semi-arid because the rest of the western side of the continent is arid, but I know that mountains can change weather patterns by a lot and the kingdom seems to have a lot of them. Just something weird I have thought about

I've been in a mood for updating character refs and I knew I had to redesign Sunstone/Daybreak for a long while now, so I'm posting this ref dump with comparisons just to fun. Sunstone is Starlight's brother so I kinda wanted him to look more similar to her (at least in his sandwing form). His alter ego also got a slight redesign. Also I thought that Halcyon (design credit goes to the lovely @snaill-dragon of course) deserved a better ref, since the last one was a bit confusing.
