Design Corner: "Classic Disney Films Starring Samuel L. Jackson And Directed By Quentin Tarantino (DJ Storm's Blog)" & 21 more news
Design Corner /////////////////////////////////////////// Classic Disney Films Starring Samuel L. Jackson And Directed By Quentin Tarantino (DJ Storm's Blog) Posted: 16 Dec 2013 04:00 AM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/5HIbacGyelM/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email In 2011, Samuel L. Jackson was named the highest gross actor of all time. While we were a bit taken back at first, when you really think about, hes been in so many films that it was bound to happen. Now we get to see what the world of Disney would be like if Samuel Jackson played the main character in some of our favorite films. This hilarious movie poster series was written by Alex J. Mann and designed by Jennifer Sanders. /////////////////////////////////////////// gone rural (Trend Tablet) Posted: 15 Dec 2013 11:14 PM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/io2J0CJLfyA/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email The rural Swazi reality isnt as bright as the colorful pieces crafted by them. Finding themselves having to pay for transport to clinics, school fees and support an average of 7 children, Swazi women found their way to overcome the challenges and empower themselves financially. Gone Rural is a holistically sustainable company that enabled the craft of over 760 Swazi women to reach 32 countries, establishing a respectful relationship between the world and the Swazi cultural heritage and community. The company, creatively directed by Philippa Thorne, a Central Saint Martins graduate, was very successful with their use of local resources and keeping Swazi traditions - the invasive weed, sisal fibre, used as one of the materials for the products, grows the year-through and doesnt threaten the biodiversity; the lutindzi grass, which in Swazi means "Flora of Swaziland" is another fibre used for the fabrication, harvested once every 12 months without damaging the roots, is enough for the whole year. The community work enables generations to work together and share skills and precious moments with their families and friends. The women naturally developed their own network and side jobs, trading food or clothes amongst each other. All the new designs or skills introduced to the production are studied and passed onto every woman, who then add their own creative touches to it. A complementary non-profit company was then founded, in 2007, by Philippa, in order to provide the community with access to education, guarantying it for 360 children annually through School Fees Bursary Fund, Motivational Training and Early Childhood Development; health through Mobile Wellness clinic, Peer Education and access to holistic homeopathic care; community development through clean water, food and shelters; and womens empowerment, through teaching artisans how to read and write, save and invest money and learning about their basic human rights. Mixing traditional techniques and aesthetics with contemporary ethical designs, the psychedelic homewear and accessories pieces are handmade and unique, and a true example of what design can change lives. (You the Designer - Graphic Design Blog) Posted: 15 Dec 2013 06:35 PM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/4OcHewbA-z4/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email Its that season again wherein a jolly round man goes through chimneys to deliver warm gifts to the nice and a cold nothing for the naughty. What if Santa, this round and jolly man is a brand? What would it be like? We used to wonder about it too until the nice folks from Quietroom made this brand book. Everyone knows who Santa Claus is, not to mention the whole story around him. The problem is that his story or rather his interpretation varies from different countries. Now, in order to perfectly tie all these loose ideas about Santa, UK based agency, Quiteroom made this amazing and not to mention hilarious brand book about Santa. The *Santa* Brand Book (yes, it has to have asterisks as the brand book suggests) pokes fun at many branding strategies that are used by many companies all over the world. The brand book is aimed to educate everyone how to "live to the brand" of *Santa*. The book discusses about the typeface and what should be the correct Pantone color to use, and why should we use *Santa* with asterisk. Designers who often work with brand books are sure to find this hilarious. While some of the branding strategies told by the brand book might come across as silly, some of the things done and shown in the brand book are done by companies in real life. One example is the silly and obnoxious use of brand names like Sony PLAYSTATION 3 which was mentioned in Fast Company. The brand book is perfect for this season specially for those who are deeply into branding and marketing. For those who have a Grinch of a friend whos into marketing, this might be a good share to spread the holiday cheer! So live the brand! Snap it! Clap it Wrap it* What do you guys think? Passing by a child visibly dealing with treatment for an illness or living with a disability, many thoughts can come rushing to your head. You wonder what is the "right" thing to do. Youre not a bad person, but you dont know how your actions will be received. I know. Ive been on both sides. I was a disabled child myself, battling juvenile rheumatoid arthritis (JRA). Thankful that my own children are healthy, my passion today is to make a difference in the lives of others. Over the last 10 years, many children have inspired me in this pursuit. We started with a trip to Copenhagen, and last week it was time for our second stop; four days in Berlin. I will write more about a few chosen stops on our trip, but let's start with a general summary of the fun we had in the first two days! The picture above is from our favourite corner of the lobby in super cool design hotel Michelberger, where I also stayed a few days this Spring, and I was so happy to be back there. The atmosphere is layed back, the service great, the interior design totally stylish and relaxed at the same time, and we all loved the bar and lobby area to hang out after long days trotting around this huge city. My only complaint: ONE small mirror in a room for nine people?? No wonder it took us so long to get ready every day! All photos are by Riikka Kantinkoski, or perhaps you know her as Weekday Carnival. It's such a luxury to have a professional photographer in the group, as we are always guaranteed to have nice pictures for our blogs from all of our experiences! We started our Berlin blog tour with a visit to Cookies Cream, a top notch vegetarian restaurant that took us all by surprise when we were lead through dark alleys by our hosts at VisitBerlin, and then through a mysterious hidden club space full of dark nooks, strange interior details (think ostrich lamps, chains, a wedding booth and flickering fluorescent lights), to finally end up in a big white room, full of long communal tables and huge modern art paintings. Unfortunately, they had a "no pictures" policy, but you can take 360 tour here. And no, none of us (to my knowledge at least) tried the bedroom or the viewing room behind it. The next morning started with breakfast and a styling challenge at Fashion4Home, where we were divided into two teams and created these settings from their big range of furniture and accessories. I teamed up with Igor, Anna and Desiree to make the second picture you see above. Quite relaxed and homey, and I think you can see pieces of all of us in there, while still managing to create a harmonious whole. Or what do you think? Next on the schedule: Lunch at Etsy! Their office buzzed with creativity, as is to be expected I suppose, but it was so nice to see this space irl after seeing it on instagram and on blogs so many times. Lots of interesting details everywhere, and some examples of the products you can find on their site had also made it into the loft studio/office. You can find a few more pics from there on my Instagram, or check out our hashtag for snapshots by all of us from the whole trip. After a short shopping trip we went over to visit the headquarters of Fantastic Frank Berlin, who I am sure you have heard of already. If not, it's a Swedish real estate agency, focusing on perfectly (and sometimes very creatively) styled apartments with pictures that would fit in any international deco magazine, and they just opened their German branch this summer. I don't have any pics to share from their office, but above is one from their latest apartment for sale, to give you an idea of what they are all about. Our last stop for the day, and one of my absolute favourites from my last Berlin trip, was Supergrau. This design brand has such a great shop/showroom, filled with minimalist products. Exclusive materials, beautiful lines and clever ideas are mixed into wonderful items, of which you can see a select few above. And below, two details from their shop, just to give you an idea of the atmosphere. It's this great mix of raw and clean that I love so much. /////////////////////////////////////////// Placebo Pharmacy by klab Architecture (CONTEMPORIST) Posted: 15 Dec 2013 12:30 PM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/1LF-WvW-4i0/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email klab Architecture designed a pharmacy in Athens, Greece, that looks like a spiraling cylinder. . Description from the architects The design process for this large (600m2) supralocal pharmacy forced us to shift our viewpoint and come up with a virtual building-a placebo pharmacy. The octagonal shape of the existing structure was re-formed into a cylinder in order to create a spiral which seeks to converse with the rapid motion on Vouliagmenis Avenue, the urban artery on which the building stands. The panels of the faade are perforated using Braille, which both alludes to the systems use on pharmaceutical packaging and boosts visibility by allowing the light to find its way into the interior. The new facade also protects the interior while acting as a lure for passers-by. Inside, the product display mirrors the circular frontage, while a ramp up to the upper level extends the dynamism of the exterior spiral into the interior space. ((title unknown)) Posted: 15 Dec 2013 11:41 AM PST http://feedproxy.google.com/&;r/DesignCorner_feed/&;3/HATuh8TDlU4/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email Moritz Lehner replaces the old plexiglass sheet with the Depot Basel logo Today was the last official day of the exhibition CHANGES - CHANCES. (you can still visit it by appointment until mid January 2014 - drop us a line at [email protected]) It is our 19th self-initiated occasion around a design-related topic that we initiated. Over 2,5 years ago we found Depot Basel, an independent, dynamic place that aims to be a part of the ongoing discussion of design. After several temporary locations we signed a lease for a former Bureau de Change at Voltaplatz in Basel. It was a decision we had to make. Our intentions were gradually requesting a permanent location. For the opening we decided to present an exhibition that opens up a discussion about the future, past and present development of design and the relation between transitions and change, focusing on Switzerland. It is a format that hopefully opens up the discussion outside of the country, too. Both, The process of the exhibition and the process of finding the location, took us some time. Eventually it now feels like we found what we were looking for in a location. As Claude Lichtenstein says in the discussion for the exhibition: "The most important changes come about slowly and silently, but once they impact, they move us all the more." At least thats what we hope for. Moritz Walther and our friend Christoph Sagel carry the first elements of the scenography into the freshly refurbished 70m2 space that will serve as main location for the upcoming three years The talented Moritz Lehner welded and constructed all elements of the system that will serve us for the next 3 years We were truly happy that all our work came slowly together 3 days before the opening Laura Pregger and Moritz Walther, Team Depot Basel The refurbished space got a new lawyer of light grey paint. This job that took us many days of work and left marks of paint on our hands. Next time we will invest in some decent pairs of rubber gloves. Depot Aufbau - Zeitraffer / Timelapse from Depot Basel on Vimeo. For the development of the scenography we teamed up with Basel-based studio EMYL. This image is symbolic for the tender loving care the studio put into the project. This is Raphael Hglhammer of EMYL. The space has now 2 rails on the ceiling that provide hanging and lighting possibilities Like a still from a documentary - Laura Pregger exhausted but content. This was in the middle of the night, two days before the official opening The exhibition view of CHANGES - CHANCES when you enter the location On the occasion of CHANGES-CHANCES we launched a publication that consists of two booklets. Its a collection of the multiple layers of the exhibition including photographs by f.e. Gina Folly and Gregor Brndli statements of f.e Tido von Oppeln, Birgit S.Bauer, Hand Meier Aaichen, Adam Stech etc. and a summary of the discussion. It can be purchased for 25 Euro exkl. postage via [email protected] First visitors enjoying a beer and the publication The starting point was an invite to our location (before the refurbishment) where Verena Huber, Claude Lichtenstein, Jrg Boner, Stefan Rechtsteiner und Meret Probst came together to discuss their perception of Switzerland as design country. Moderation. The encounter and the conversation was moderated by Claudia Mareis. Depot Basel: 19 - CHANGES - CHANCES from Depot Basel on Vimeo. In total the discussion took around 2 hours. We edited and released a 50 minute version that you can watch on our vimeo account. Within the last years we collaborated and worked with various people like graphic designers Deutsche & Japaner, textile designer Fabia Zindel, creative Studio Okolo, among others that we offer for sale at Depot Basel Outside view of our new location Guests, friends, contributors and collaborators Felix Lehner from Sitterwerk and his wife Sibylle Stoeckli This reads: Place for Change as opportunity? In the holiday season, with a good part of society taking part in excess shopping, people are becoming increasingly conscious of what we discard. Our relationship to the accumulation of stuff and the level of waste humans produce seems to be collectively shifting. The artists whose work is shared here: David Ellis, Vik Muniz, Gabriel Kuri, Song Dong, Tim Noble and Sue Webster demonstrate the way individual artistic voices arise from this consciousness and the beautiful and often magical work that is informed by our accumulated or discarded stuff. Tim Noble and Sue Webster Time Noble and Sue Webster are masters in the art of transformation. As demonstrated here, the collaborative artist pair tend to work in scraps of wood that have been thrown away and use the element of light as a critical component in the rendering of their imagery. The presence of light as the catalyst for the tableau to unfold theoretically sheds light on a sort of "eye of the beholder" thematic. "The process of transformation, from discarded waste, scrap metal or even taxidermy creatures to a recognizable image, echoes the idea of perceptual psychology a form of evaluation used for psychological patients," explains the pairs artist statement. Using the detritus of life as an artistic Rorschach test seemingly on themselves, Noble and Websters work yields captivating results. Tim Noble and Sue Webster David Ellis The work of David Ellis when seen in photographs may just look like a regular old pile of garbage, but witnessing this kinetic work in action quickly reveals its genius. Ellis is a highly diverse artist with work ranging from street art to painted installations- all of it being highly dynamic and with a clear vision. His works referred to as "Trash Talk," entitled with a delicious double entendre, moves and makes rhythmic beats, reminiscent of Stomp, or street musicians. His work is best viewed in video format to properly witness the sound and movement. Vik Muniz Vik Muniz Vik Muniz immersed himself in the world of garbage- literally. His photographs in the series titled "Pictures of Garbage"explore on many levels the lives of catadores- pickers of recyclable garbage- in the worlds largest landfill outside Rio de Janeiro. Muniz worked with conviction and compassion on this project which deeply involved the catadores whose lives are spent entirely amidst the rubble of the worlds refuse. By photographing his subjects, then enlisting the help of the catadores to recreate the image from an ariel view using the wasted objects they interact with on a daily basis, Muniz captured his subjects on both an individual and collective level. The photographic works were sold for an incredibly high price, and the Muniz gave the money back to the people that participated in the work. The whole project culminated in a documentary entitled Wasteland, which won multiple awards and accolades, telling the story of Munizs journey and shedding light onto the inspiring people he worked with. Vik Muniz Gabriel Kuri Gabriel Kuri Gabriel Kuri uses discardable objects as a sort of consumeristic paper trail, albeit in a poetic and minimalistic sensibility. Often incorporating receipts from absurdly mundane purchases and objects like drug store cosmetics, Kuri renders his work in clean contemporary lines and presentation- elevating his everyday purchase paper trail to a reverential high art status. The receipts are often rendered into woven tapestries. Historically, personally woven tapestries have been objects possessed only by higher class aristocratic peoples, therefore the everyday inexpensive purchase that Kuri selects for transcription on his receipt tapestries bears a subversive subtext. Also fascinating is the architectural simplicity to Kuris granite slab pieces. Using the slabs as shelves for cheap mass produced objects imbeds a certain irony and idiosyncrasy into otherwise minimalist stone sculpture. Gabriel Kuri Song Dong The work "Waste Not" by Song Dong enlists a more personal level of attachment to objects. This huge installation which I experienced at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco, and was also installed on the mezzanine of the MOMA. The installation includes all of the objects that Song Dongs mother collected over the years, accumulating and nearly hoarding due to her familys experience with poverty earlier in her life. The household possessions are organized and lovingly laid out in a grid formation around the hut-like structure in a manner that seems to individually present each object and categorization of objects up for the viewers consideration. The installation was structured in such a way that a path was carved out amidst all the shoes, cooking utensils, yarns, etc, that guided your experience of the things Song Dongs mother clung to throughout the years. The sculptures can be found throughout China Green, a new high quality mixed use inner city re-development on the site of the former Australian Fine China Company in Subiaco, Western Australia. From the artist The Australian Fine China company that previously existed on the site created just that; commercial fine tableware ceramics and china. As part of the manufacture of ceramics, key processes, such as rotation, spinning and moulding were used. As this was a large production facility there was also a strong element of repetition, with units being produced over and over in a series of streamlined manufacture. The predominant colour was white and off white, as white clay and white plaster moulds were ever present. Waste followed the same process line and repetition; stacking up into mounds of misshapen and cracked units. The circle and quadrants or part circles were the repeated motif of both the waste, the fabrication moulds and the finished products. This motif of spinning, repetition, mould fragments, white circles and quadrants became the inspiration for the artworks, together with the overlayed decoration and decals that detailed such items as plates and bowls previously made at the site. The butterfly in particular refers to decorative china butterflies made at the site as part of the Wembley Ware range. I have been a big fan of his works since late last year because of his "childish" illustration style. For this article, he has illustrated a very nice Dolce & Gabbana F/W 2013 illustration and it is an extension of the F/W 2013 illustration project I did for Swide back in September. Please visit Swide to read the article and Draw A Dot. for my personal remarks. /////////////////////////////////////////// "We also did a lot of play-testing with people who dont regularly play games. We looked for people who dont play games at all. And we couldnt find them. That was very interesting for me. If we look for people who have never played games in their lives, which was our initial request for play-testers, they were extraordinarily hard to find. They would maybe have played games during the PlayStation One generation, maybe they played games on smartphones today, but its a testament to just how broad the appeal of games is that its very hard to find somebody who has never picked up a game. We found people who claimed never to have played games. They would play a little bit, and they would do surprisingly well. I would say to them, hit the start button and pause the game so we can talk, and they would know where the start button was. Thats a clue that they had played games." - In conversation with Mark Cerny

Design Berlin - Magnum
What makes the "Magnum" series special is its striking shape. The pipes are larger than conventional models and are characterised by powerful lines.
