Visual Diary 2: Food Waste
A wicked problem that I see in my own community is food waste. It’s estimated that 2.3 million tons of food in Dallas is added to landfills from businesses and residents. Although there are programs that individuals can pay and sign up for to compost their food waste, it’s often expensive and requires a lot of work on the individual’s part (space to compost, driving the compost to a donation center, etc.). Also, the majority of Dallas residents live in apartments or small lots and don’t have the space for a large composting bin.
The first image is of my apartment’s recycling center and as you can see, there are only options for paper, plastic, bottles, and cans. The second image is an example of a small composting bin that clearly labels what foods can be donated. If a bin like this one was in my apartment's recycling center, I would definitely use it! This seems like a wicked design problem that is begging for an innovative way that local residents can easily recycle their food waste.

Another thing that I would like to take away from my project and use in my career is the ability to build on ideas and topics I am already knowledgable on. We oftentimes create better solutions due to us simply knowing more about the topic than the next person, leading us to add even more value to the lives of those we are trying to help.

Visual Diary 4 - Serving vs. Helping Designs Sometimes the best intentions can create more harm than good. The earlier models of products that donated one for one were all created with the intent to to help, to be a design intervention, by providing needed products into under-resourced communities. However with entities like Tom’s Shoes, the actual result was a displacement of local shoe vendors. To make it even more lopsided, this approach is an effective marketing tactic so people want to buy the shoes because they feel they’re doing good and helping when in actuality they’re exacerbating instability for the local economies they’re intending to support.

A complex design problem is making organic food accessible to everyone regardless of your status. Natural, healthy products are abundant and should be provided accordingly.

For Visual Diary #4, another service that helps the disabled are the inclusive playgrounds that Singapore has been establishing around their country. From a TedTalk on May 24th, 2018, "To design better tech, understand context (TEDGlobal2017),” it was emphasized that as designers, we need to engage ourselves and immerse ourselves in the environment of those in the audience in order to really understand what they need, and those who designed this playground and work with these kids have done so to understand how to make such a playground exist and work for these kids to use and play with. Additionally, in Nelson and Stolterman’s book, “The Design Way : Intentional Change in an Unpredictable World - Foundations and Fundamentals of Design Competence,” it states how “design ideally is about service on behalf of the other -- not merely about changing someone's behavior for their own good or convincing them to buy products and services” (page 41). I think this inclusive playground does a great job painting how the designer built this service on behalf of these disabled kids and now allows them to develop equal relationships with other kids and those who help them through such platform.

Visual Diary # 7
I saw this image a while back while shopping online at Target! When i saw this i immediately thought of this class and i just hadn’t been able to fit it into any of the prompts we’ve had! So since this week is a free for all topic, i felt it was the perfect time to share this photo! I LOVE THIS! Target has gotten a lot of attention for its children’s clothing line that is all inclusive for people with disabilities but i feel like i haven’t heard anything about the same for adults. But hello look at this beautiful model for target! I love that target is so inclusive by just using this one model! She is Africa America, plus size, and has the cutest artificial leg i have ever seen! This is some major design leadership shown by target and whatever model angency this woman is signed with! The world needs more of this type of body positivity!

Visual Diary 14: Project Highlight 3 - Stake in the Ground
Lastly, I enjoyed the portion of the project where I placed a “stake in the ground” towards my design solution. My stake in the ground is that “The Katy Trail will be the safest, most accessible, and inclusive area in Dallas.” This is the differentiating feature of my design solution and it must incorporate creative design solutions to make it possible. Creating a stake in the ground was challenging but also fun because it allowed me to reflect on the design solution as a whole and how best to set it apart from potential competitors. It also helped me narrow my focus to what is possible given my set parameters.
Learning how to think about and create a stake in the ground is an essential tool for a design leader. This allowed me to experience how design leaders think about their projects holistically and how to strategize toward potential solutions. This piece was slightly challenging but I look forward to having more experiences like this in the future as I work towards becoming a design leader.

For our third visual diary assignment, I also thought of a toothpaste tube squeezer, such as the one I took a photo of here in green. It’s simple, yet it takes the convenience out of squeezing the toothpaste out of the tube so cleanly. It also helps people save more money because it helps maximize the toothpaste in each and every tube. Although it may seem minor, this creation represents an example of an unexpected need that matters to the end users/customers and their long term convenience and needs.

Visual Diary #11 | Blockbuster
I think we can all remember the joy of going to Blockbuster to pick out the weekends movies to watch, and grabbing some candy while waiting in line. Or remember the crazed last-minute rush to return your movies on time. Blockbuster was such a staple in most everyone’s childhood because it’s how you got the latest movies to watch.  Blockbuster’s slogan was “never be without a movie” and while Blockbuster was at its prime this slogan was true. Their mission statement was stated as such, “ At Blockbuster, we are committed to supporting the communities that our members and employees call home.” This makes me believe that Blockbusters “stake in the ground” was supporting communities and providing jobs. Which is amazing don’t get me wrong, but this can also be seen as the beginning of the downfall of Blockbuster. Blockbuster was the leader of the movie rental market, so when the world started becoming more digital they saw no reason to adapt their business model to fit into the digital world around them. Blockbuster was said to be at its peak in 2004. What I found most interesting in doing research on Blockbuster is that the Netflix founder proposed a partnership with Blockbuster in the beginning. “ Netflix wanted Blockbuster to advertise their brand in the stores while Netflix would run Blockbuster online. The idea got turned down by Antioco because he thought it was ridiculous and that Netflix’s business model was “niche business.” Little did he know that Hasting’s idea would have saved Blockbuster.” Blockbuster believed in community, so to them going digital would get rid of jobs for people in the communities they were in. I believe Blockbuster thought this decision would help keep jobs and their business wouldn’t suffer from it. Ultimately though, Blockbuster suffered huge losses and filed for bankruptcy in 2010. While companies like Netflix and Hulu have taken over the movie viewing and streaming, what used to be renting, industry. Who knows what could’ve become of Blockbuster if they had decided to change their business model and partner with Netflix, instead of sticking to their stake in the ground.  A quote I found in the articles I read perfectly captures what happened to Blockbuster. “The Internet didn’t kill blockbuster, the company did it to itself.”

Visual Diary 14: Project Highlight 2 - Ethnographic Interviews
Another piece of my design leadership project that I enjoyed was organizing and conducting ethnographic interviews. This was essential to my project because my wicked problem is identifying how to increase safety and accessibility on the Katy Trail. With so many people using the Katy Trail every day, I needed to speak to its frequent users to better understand the problem. I enjoyed this piece of the project because I received many different perspectives on the problem and even heard some feedback that I was not expecting. Learning about how other people observe a wicked problem can validate and/or allow you to question your approach.
As a design leader, I think it is essential to be willing to hear from others outside your immediate leadership group. Being willing to speak and listen to other employees or clients allows for a more transparent approach as a leader. Also, being willing to go outside your comfort zone and hear different perspectives makes a strong design leader. Having the courage to incorporate others into my design solution is something I would like to take forward as a design leader.
